Captain Sensible – Gameweek 7

This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Boasting 33% of the vote, Anthony Martial is a new entry at the summit of the Captain’s Poll. The former Monaco frontman emerged from the bench in midweek to round off Manchester United’s League Cup win over Swindon Town, bringing his tally to four goals in three domestic outings. Martial has netted with three of his four strikes in the league and now enjoys a home tie against a Sunderland outfit that ranks top for goals conceded (13) this term. By virtue of his good form (two goals and assists in five starts) and the Red Devils’ favourable match-up, Juan Mata joins the Frenchman in the top 10. Mata has recorded just one blank since Gameweek 2 and ranks top among Man United’s midfielders for shots on target (five) this term.

Sergio Aguero slips to the silver-medal position this Gameweek, with just 19% of voters willing to hand him the captain’s armband. After netting against Sunderland in the cup in midweek, last year’s Golden Boot winner will be relishing the opportunity to pit his wits against Spurs at White Hart Lane this Saturday, having racked up eight goals in his previous four starts against the North London outfit. Aguero’s new team-mate Kevin De Bruyne lies in seventh spot, with 2% of voters eyeing up the 10.0-priced midfielder. The Belgium international netted his second goal in as many starts on Wednesday and placed in the top five among his counterparts for attempts (four) last Gameweek.

Dimitri Payet (9%) and Riyad Mahrez (6%) sit third and fourth, respectively, on the leaderboard. The former has tallied two goals and one assist in his last two outings and faces a home tie against Norwich’s generous defence – only Sunderland (13) and Chelsea (12) have conceded more goals than the Canaries (10). The latter, meanwhile, is 12 points clear of any player in the league, having bagged five goals and three assists already this season. Mahrez ranks joint-top among midfielders for shots on target (10) ahead of Arsenal’s visit to the King Power Stadium.

Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard are neck-and-neck at the 5% mark. Sanchez chalked up three more attempts (31) and eight more shots inside the box (14) than any midfielder through the first six Gameweeks but is still yet to open his account. Nonetheless, the fact that the Foxes have conceded in every match-up so far will serve as encouragement for the Chile international. Conversely, Hazard broke his duck last time out against the Gunners but has recorded just 10 attempts this term. The Belgian winger is afforded a chance to build momentum on t as the Blues gear up for a trip to Newcastle United.

Pedro, Harry Kane and Callum Wilson all look differential picks with a mere 1% backing. Since making his debut in Gameweek 3, Pedro has bettered team-mate Hazard for shots (14 to eight) and efforts in the box (eight to five), with the Spaniard continuing his fine form with a goal in the midweek cup win over Walsall.

Kane ranks second in the forward charts for attempts (21) but has tested the keeper with just four of these strikes. A visit from a Man City outfit that’s registered five clean sheets in six matches could prolong the Spurs striker’s barren spell. Wilson, on the other hand, sits joint-top in the scoring charts with five goals. The 6.0-priced forward will certainly fancy his chances when Bournemouth travel to face a Stoke City side that’s conceded five more big chances (20) than any other team.

i'm amazed that so many think chelsea will smash newcastle! newcastle have been decent at back! they've conceded less than chelsea, their struggles have been in front of goal! at best, maybe a 2-0 win for chelsea!

Can't decide between Payet or Pedro this week. Payet's got the form but Chelsea's fixtures look good and going without any Chelsea attackers could hurt me. Thoughts?

Worth it to take a -4 to do Sterling -> KDB?

Don't see the goal threat in Sterling.

Demi...you're a sensible chap. Based on stats (and not your interpretation of them!) and fixtures this week only, would you bring in Pedro or KDB for Silva?

Already have Aguero and Kolorov. KDB or Silva would come in next week (for Coutinho) if i went with Pedro

    Cheers

Coutinho has probably the best stats among midfielders and pool have been rather unlucky (Bournemouth match aside). KDB I reckon

    Captain choice is tough..

    A) Martial

    B) Aguero

    C) Payet

    D) Sanchez

    Cheers

Martial from that list. Since I'm not a martial owner I'm going with Mahrez

Mahrez is still my captain choice. Even if his stats aren't the best, he's still riding the form train, involved in everything Leicester do, playing at home where he has done well and Arsenal are going to be playing without Coq and possibly Gabriel.

Any really compelling reason to go with Kun/Sanchez instead, other than last season's points?

Wait, his stats aren't the best? I'm questioning the validity of these 'stats' you members go on about

You see, when anybody in his full senses talks about 'underlying stats' determining the results, he does not refer to the results. So the stats does not mean Mahrez's goals + assists, but the things he does that generally tend to lead to goals and assists.

Payet has a more favorable matchup. But yes everything Leiscester does goes through Mahrez. Payet is a major player centrally for WHU but I'm torn between pure form vs form+fixture.

    Team for this gw:

    Begovic
    Kolarov Evans Prodl
    Sanchez Pedro Sterling Mahrez
    Aguero Wilson Gomis

    McCarthy Westwood Francis Naughton

I have two FT but no idea what to do. Dont fancy Gomis this week so thinking of getting in someone like Sakho or Ighalo. Thoughts? Cheers

So far, with Martial, there have been 'imagine the scenes' posts if:

      - he scores
      - he gets injured
      - he gets dropped
      - he gets benched
      - he gets substituted
      - he blanks
      - he gets booked
      - he gets sent off
      - he gets his 4th price rise of the week

By my reckoning, we're going to get 'scenes' whatever happens.

If only. Arguments for aguero- surely he's due, i hate spurs, i hate chelsea, hazards less effective without costa. Arguments for hazard- they're the late kick off so keeps it exciting, surely he's due, loads of people have got rid of him.

Surely you can see my predicament?

I've got Martial too but don't want to captain him as he annoys me. I think aguero is probably the way forward. I've captained him for like the last 4 weeks so my perseverance deserves to be rewarded.

Kun purely because I'm worried of missing his incoming haul but Martial surely must return v Sunderland?

    Hi,

I have 2m in the bank. Martial, Kane & Benteke up front .

Do I leave as is and let Wayanma come in for Bentek?

Or should I get some one in, and if so, who?

    Thanks

Wilson, Ighalo? Pelle? Also you haven't stated if for a hit or for free. If free then yes, if for -4 then no.

Currently have Targett, Muniesa and Gomez along with Kompany and Azpi.

At this late stage I'm now thinking I may just save my free transfer and take the 0 if all 3 of Targett, Muniesa and Gomez don't play.

    Any thoughts?

No alternative captaincy picks article from me this week I'm afraid as my picks all feature highly in the poll and are discussed in this article.

I think Payet and Pedro are a great shout for your armbands this week and Marital owners could take a punt on him.
