Scout Notes – Gameweek 38 – Tuesday

Wayne Rooney serves up a goal and assist as United beat Bournemouth 3-1 in the final match of the season. A late Chris Smalling own goal proves costly, however, and denies the Red Devils a thirteenth shut-out in front of their own supporters.

Rooney in the points

Louis van Gaal named a strong starting line-up as Man United clinched fifth place in the Premier League thanks to a 3-1 home win over Bournemouth in the final fixture of 2015/16.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring with his first effort in eight league appearances and also bagged an assist and maximum bonus points from a central midfield berth to earn a 12-point haul in the Gameweek.

Marcus Rashford’s strike took his tally to five in 11 league appearances and Ashley Young also found the net against Eddie Howe’s side. Anthony Martial and Antonio Valencia, meanwhile, provided an assist apiece to finish the season in fine form. The Frenchman racked up 26 points in his final three league appearances, whilst Valencia – who started the final six matches under Van Gaal – registered an impressive 40 points from a right-back berth over that period.

Smalling error scuppers another shut-out

Whilst the United attackers brought home the points, it was a disappointing evening for those holding United defensive regulars David de Gea and Chris Smalling. De Gea’s chances of earning an 18th clean sheet of the season and sharing the Golden Glove award with Petr Cech were denied after Smalling converted a Max Gradel attempt into his own net in stoppage time.

Adding salt to the wound for the Red Devils defence, Bournemouth failed to register a single attempt on target over the 90 minutes. De Gea was left with two points to take home, then, whilst Smalling’s gaffe saw him produce zero points last night.

Nonetheless, the result still means that Van Gaal’s outfit were joint-first for both clean sheets (18, along with Arsenal) and goals against (35, along with Spurs) highlighting the resilience of their defence at Old Trafford. Despite last night’s disappointment, a tally of 12 shut-outs and nine goals against in front of their own fans was superior to any side across the 2015/16 season.

What OR is considered good? What is great?

Is top 10k good? top 5k great? Whats top 2k?

Never cared about this in the past because ive always been outside the top 50k, now im well inside i want to know how i did!

Smarty - an idea for FPL discovery. You show the distribution for average points for all players - but the first cut-off point is at the 5th percentile, so approx 190k teams. As most of us on here are safely inside that (apologies to those who aren't) would it be possible to ad a chart for the top 100k only broken down by each 5% (so 5k at a time)? I'd find that very interesting.

What should you get caught up in? It's not roulette, you make hundreds of decisions over 9 months and more often than not you get the rank you deserve.

What's the point playing if you think this way?

A good standing in your mini-leagues is good.

If you finish in the top 30k you're in the top 1% of teams. That's fantastic.

Hah, I was playing PS4 with andy85wsm and every couple of minutes I was begging for Bournemouth to score...

For Smalling to get an OG in the final seconds to keep the Scout title in it's rightful place, and out of the hands of Evs, was very pleasing.

I've seen a few Euro fantasy teams on here include Milik. Just want to warn people that whilst it appears that he had a good season this year, he only scored 6 goals against teams in the top half of the league. Also look at this international goals, he got 1 against Germany in a competitive game but very little apart from that.

Oh no. That's got to be frustrating. It's a beautiful city as well. How confident of the win are you? Seems like you're attacking and Sevilla are defensive and hit on the break. Should be very interesting.

I think Liverpool have the better chance of winning but anything can happen.

Liverpool have more quality but Seville are masters of Europa with the most wins of any team.

Europa League doesn't get much buzz in the US, so I'm wondering how big a deal winning is. I always thought of the final as the competition to be the 33rd best team in Europe. But it seems like maybe it's a little bigger deal than that.

Well it's the runner up competition no doubt but a final is a final and since they added CL qualifying to it, there is more riding on it. A lot of other countries have teams that are CL qualifiers every year (Spain, Germany, France etc) and so for the teams under them Europa becomes their main option. I would say it's like winning the league cup.

It's important for clubs from smaller leagues and small football nations. But UEFA made it more competitive recent years, and now a winner has a direct spot for CL so it's growing

    3. pompeyfan
      • 14 Years

It always used to be a big deal when it was known as the Uefa cup, and has to a certain extent remained a big deal throughout most of Europe since it changed name/format, except in England where it has only started again being a big deal due to the CL place for the winner now. There it seems that the money of the CL was more important than a trophy.

The UEFA cup used to be awesome. 2nd, 3rd and maybe 4th in the league in a cup competition. I think it used to be harder to win then the champions cup. Agreed, the CL is a wh*res trophy, always has been and always will be.

It is a European trophy which every non-English team wants to win. Teams are generally proud to represent their country amongst Europes elite.

This season has brought in an additional element whereby the winner gets CL football the following season. This has made the English media consider the tournement worthwhile.

    5. djenzio

It is a European Trophy and a very big deal, for some reason in England it is looked down upon but with the CL spot now up for grabs I imagine it will become a bigger deal, also if Liverpool win tonight I think other teams in England will take more notice of it.

As mentioned below when it was the UEFA cup it was a lot more prestigious in England.

Also the win gets you straight to CL group stages, so it's like finishing 2nd/3rd in BPL

I wouldn't say 33rd when UCL 3rd place finishers go in to the tournament. So more like 17th.

I still wouldn't say 17th best in Europe.

Winning the Europa is much greater feat than getting knocked out of the CL in the second round.

Liverpool beat Dortmund, one of the top teams in Europe, and Villarreal, 4th/5th best defensive team in Europe this season in order to progress to the final and they still have a very tough challenge ahead of them with Seville tonight.

Winning the Uefa Cup was a big deal up until the last decade . I think there were two reasons while it is being seen as such 1) Due to the reformatting of the Champions League it is very difficult for the big clubs to be knocked out in the group stages and get into the Europa League 2) Teams get far more money for qualifying for the Champions League and many English teams have seen it as a distraction as a result

the agreement with BT was 1 game per tournament (Europa/CL) would be aired for free so they have decided to air the final of both Europa and CL for free on YouTube. Very decent if you ask me.

Annoying end to the season with only owning Smalling in the United-game. My first team ends up at around 7-8k OR and my second team (used less seriously, just going for punts and such) ends up at around 10-11k OR.

Did not reach my OR goal set before the season, but at least I have done pretty well in MLs.

I played a similar game that is hosted by a Norwegian channel (TV2, they own the rights for PL here). I was closing in on 1st place (wins a 55'' TV), but their servers broke down when I was doing my changes before DGW37 ruining all my work. Ended up at 8th OR because of it...

I was frustrated for days when that happened... 🙁

Not a huge success story by FFS standards, but checking my final OR and it stands at 27k. Happy with that, my next highest FPL finish was around 120k, first time taking it seriously this year. Aimed to finish under 100k this year, maybe 10k next...?

Thanks to all on here for the advice, think I may have to invest in a membership for next season come June or whenever it is!

Second that. I took -32 between GW 34-38, resulted in going from 12k to 1,2k.

      64. I went up in 7 weeks when I took hits and down in 5. Marginally better.

Do we think Götze will be in the german starting line up in euro 2016?

I mean Gotze *may* start but is a rotation risk as he will compete with Brandt/Sane for his spot in the team

I think it is really hard to predict the lineups in the Euros. Very tricky to find the hidden gems in the fantasy teams.

Reus, Ozil and Muller are nailed. One spot up for grabs in the attacking quartet. Gotze and Bellarabi fighting for it imo.

Muller was the first name on my team sheet.

One spot is up for grabs. There's a list of players who could occupy it, and it depends on who is cut from Joachim Löw's final squad.

Wouldn't just dismiss Brandt if he makes the final cut though, he's been one of the form youngsters in Europe this past 6 months.

What you guys think, how much will Mahrez, Vardy, Rashford, Hazard, Payet, Ali cost next season?

I think Mahrez will cost at least 11M. Vardy around 9.5. Rashford maybe 8M. Hazard max 9M. Payet 9.5M. Ali around 10. I also think that Martial and Rooney should be moved to midfield category. Martial is sometimes winger, sometimes inside forward, never striker.

      Mahrez 10.5
      Vardy 10.0
      Rashford 8.0
      Hazard 10.5
      Payet 9.5
      Alli 9.0

Mahrez will not cost £11m. Not at Leicester.

We have had the most amazing year of my life but he's not going to be priced at Frank Lampard levels.

Agreed. What a year eh Andy? Never in my woldest dreams did I think that I'd ever see my team win the premier league - especially so convincingly.

Do you see us keeping Mahrez and Kante?

Mahrez will never be 11M I think. I think he will be more like 9.5

Please clarify this question (I know answer may seem a bit obvious). Thank you.

Who wins a h2h league with a knockout stage, the team in first place prior to the knockout stage or the team that wins the knockout stage final?

    thanks again!

Thank you, to be sure, do you mean... unless that the league agreed before the season stated that the winner would be the team at the top of standings?

Yes but I suppose some may not realise it'll end up a KO. Depends how many are in the ml. I had a shock first time it happened to me.

What's the point in a knockout stage if not to declare the winner?

Do the league standings act as a guide for who plays who? Then the knockouts are more important 🙂

I hear you, IM. Yes, the top 4 teams in the league standings after gw 36 played a knockout round in gw37 and gw38, with 1st playing 4th and 2nd playing 3rd in gw37 sem-final, and the winners of the semis playing a final in gw38.

    Hazard 9.5
    Payet 9
    Alli 8.5 or 9

Given all the points I left on my bench this season, I think I'm going to run a 2nd team next year as an experiment. It'll have exactly the same squad and will mirror my transfers 100%, but all the line-up and captain choices will be made by random number generator.

    1. Irish Madridista ⭐
      • 13 Years

That's just asking for disappointment.. Either the random numbers generator will beat you, or the experiment will fail massively 😉

Well, that's the glass half-empty way of looking at it... Another way would be either the experiment succeeds, or logic trumps blind luck!

Hi all. Bad end gw 33 -4 drops me to 56k overall. Best finish so far tho. 2nd in one league. 1St in another. 370 euro in winnings. Good season all round but disappointed with this gw coz was in 37k roughly.

Wen is opening day if nxt season anyone know yet?? Il be watching my team (villa) play b4 that this season unfortunately.

Gone from last seasons top 63k to a top 15k finish.

Pleased with that, though convinced I can do better. Need to make less decisions on fixtures and more on form, I think.

    Good afternoon everyone.

I have a question in rules. Was there a time when a WC was played, the FT of that week was carried to the following week (you have 2 FT the week after the WC) ? I remember this being the case at some point of time but I don't remember when. Certainly wasn't the case with my last WC in GW 33.

    Hi!

Anybody found any midfielders for 4.5 or defenders for 4.0 in the Euro game that we think actually will play?
