Dugout Discussion – England vs Iceland

England and Iceland go head-to-head at 8pm as the Euro 2016 Round of 16 comes to an end.

Both sides were runners-up in their respective groups on the back of a win and two draws apiece, though there’s no question that the underlying stats are in favour of the Three Lions.

Given that Iceland have averaged just 28.3% possession so far, it’s fair to say that their opponents will be expected to dominate proceedings as the Scandinavians sit deep. As we saw against Slovakia, though, Roy Hodson’s side have toiled to break down obstinate opponents – they registered 29 unsuccessful attempts in their goalless draw against Slovakia.

England produced almost three times the number of attempts on goal (64 to 23) than their opponents over the group stages, though despite a wealth of options in the final third, currently lack a cutting edge and have scored just three times so far.

Iceland have found the net on more occasions (four) but given they’ve managed just nine shots on target, it remains to be seen if they can maintain a lofty 17.4% goal conversion rate – the highest in the tournament.

At the back, England again have reason for optimism. Hodgson’s men allowed a single big chance against in the group stages – less than any other side – and conceded just 11 efforts inside the box.

Iceland, on the other hand, have afforded the opposition 25 efforts in the penalty area, which bodes well for the Three Lions’ chances of grabbing the win that would see them square up to tournament favourites France in the quarter-final stage next time out.

      Bonucci - Giaccherini - Glik - Hector - Naylor
      Hazard - Kroos - Ramsey
      Pelle - Bale

Hmm. Not sure on this one.

Schurrle has doen nothing so far so I would stick on Drax there. I am not sure that Wales will be worth the offensive double up next week either.

        Have you considered Gomez Addams?

Interesting shout there.. Likely to keep his spot up front?

I'm not sure about German options at all tbh, fancy Italy's defence and Spain were impressing me as much as Germany.. Couldn't rule out a Gomez tap in though!

I have 4 players out - De Gea, Walker, Rami and Perisic.

I'm thinking about trying to go without wildcarding and perhaps wildcarding during the semi finals instead.

Only problem is Rami, Walker and Perisic are fairly cheap - going to be tough to get 4 replacements I actually want for quarter finals.

Also not convinced by having 3 Welsh players right now.

Dier, Walker, Alli & Perisic for me. (Plus Rami as well).

Andy, this is where it starts becoming tricky doesn't it. I remember playing the World Cup game two years ago and having a couple of Algerian enablers just so I could get a better first 11 out.

I think this may be what it comes to.

There are a lot of things wrong with the England team, set up etc but I'm starting to think that people's perceptions of how players are doing is another thing to add to the list. For example some people seem to think that Rooney has been ok the last couple of games. Last night and against Slovakia were some of the worst performances I've ever seen from an elite England player. Against Slovakia he constantly butchered all the attacking moves by running aimlessly with the ball and losing it, and last night, my god, he couldn't trap a ball, pick a pass. Every sideways pass was laboured. He has been washed up for ages and nowhere near worth a place in the squad.

I think he was good vs Russia and Wales. But I agree, he was abysmal last night and vs Slovakia.

I thought he was average in the first 2 matches, but those were very limited teams. In fact England didn't come up against a quality team and yet they won just 1 game.

Hart is hugely overrated too. He should spend some time watching the Spain vs Italy game again, that's how top keepers should perform

So, this is me, wildcard still unused. 😕

    Hennessey
    Meunier Chester Hector Jędrzejczyk
    Ramsey KDB Draxler
    Müller Milik Ronaldo (c)

    Lloris Sagna Payet Matuidi

Might as well stick with my under-performing selections, I won't catch up any ground getting the same players as everyone else. 🙂

If I were wildcarding I'd take a punt on Italy beating Germany and would have no German players at all, just a couple of Italy defenders and maybe Parolo. I'd go heavy on Belgium and France as well.

I see Belgium/France winning and I've a feeling the Italians may get the better of this German team, I think at this stage I'm pinning my colours to Belgium V Fra/Italy and back that from a fantasy perspective but I've been wrong before!

I think Italy could well do Germany 1-0, they have a very good tournament record against Germany and are defensively very solid indeed. So I agree with you there and if I were wildcarding I'd remove all my German players.

I would also back Poland over Portugal and France over Iceland.

For the last game I do think Belgium are capable of thrashing Wales. But I'd probably bet on Wales for the differential effect. Basically I need to catch up some ground in my cash ML and have nothing to lose by taking some risks. 🙂

I tried to use my WC in the round before last. Pressed it through my phone and it didn't work. Had -44 for that round and the Uefa fantasy admin wouldn't rectify.....

So basically I had a -44 deduction which removed me from first by miles in my ML to 5th. Although back up near the top (10 points adrift)

Such a pain in the arse!

      Yes. Two things.

First, I would rather bet on Poland beating Portugal than the other way around. So I'd replace Patricio, Cedric, Fonte and Ronaldo with Fabianski, Jędrzejczyk, Glik (or Pazdan) and Lewandowski.

Second, I'd bet on Italy doing Germany 1-0. So I'd replace Kroos with Matuidi and Gomez with Giroud/Pelle/Lukaku. Something like that. Or if you believe Germany will win get rid of Giaccherini and Parolo.

Basically you are playing both sides of that game and shouldn't be unless you want a safe average outcome.

    Neuer - Henn
    Hector - Meunier - *Rami(i)* - *Dier* - *Walker*
    Ozil - Hazard - Payet - *Perisic* - *Alli*
    Bale - Muller - Milik

Thanks to III for potential tip - i'm now thinking about keeping Alli in and switching Rami out, thoughts???

Peter Schmeichel thinks Alan Shearer is a no brainer for the England job.

Jog on. His testomonial stint of management on tyneside was abject.

Just general thoughts on taking a point hit in euros fantasy ?

Ironic how taking a hit for a defender on FPL is seen as an awful tactic but in this euros it maybe worthwhile

While this is ridiculously funny. I fear that an England implossion will significantly impact our chances of qualifying for the WC 🙁

Now we're leaving Europe, are we going back to a home-nations tournament method of qualifying?

No, the home nations championship will be held every 4 years instead of participating in the Euros. After all, we don't want to be in anything run by European bureaucrats. 😕

and the winners qualify for the next world cup? Excellent.

I guess as Wales have gone furthest in this European Championship we should declare them the 2016 winners by proxy. I'm getting excited for the 2020 tournament already.

The 4 home nations are quite evenly matched these days 😉

Might only be 2 or 3 home nations in the near future anyway!
