Dugout Discussion – Germany vs Italy

The third quarter-final of Euro 2016 gets underway at 8pm this evening as Germany and Italy go head-to-head in Bordeaux.

Having won three and drawn one of their four fixtures, Joachim Low’s side are the favourites for tonight’s encounter and warmed up for this one with a 3-0 hammering of Slovakia last time out.

Delving into the data, Germany certainly carry the greatest threat. The World Champions lead their opponents for attempts on goal by a massive 83 to 36, though have scored just one more time than Antonio Conte’s troops and netted a mere 7.2% of their scoring opportunities. Italy, on the other hand, have been far less wasteful and boast a 13.9% conversion rat,e which is the third highest in the tournament.

At the back, both sides have been hugely impressive. Indeed, Germany are the only side yet to concede and have allowed their opponents a mere seven shots inside the penalty box so far.

The Azzurri, though, have been breached on just one occasion – a 1-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland where Conte made eight changes to his XI.

Having sent defending champions Spain crashing out in the previous round, a buoyant Italy are more than capable of causing another upset and clinching a place in the last four alongside Portugal and Wales.

That's pretty good going, currently I am ranked 1493. I'm enjoying it, taking a few more risks than I would with fpl

Are we expecting an upset with an Iceland win ? Surely they have had their final when they beat England?

Personally I would love to see them get to the final ... but I have 4 French players in my team

Would love to say Wales v Iceland final though 🙂

No - the French will be too good for them. Need the French to win as they have the ability to stop the Germans.

I think Germany are better suited to Portugal/Wales than Fance, they defend with quite a high flat back line defence and can be counter attacked ... if you can get the ball

I was referring to France beating the Icies and then being able to take on the Germans.

My Welsh lads will take some beating now. 🙂

Much rather beat the Germans in the final - seems more fitting 😉

Love the fact Wales have got so far. The have the attitude that England really lacked. How do you think they will do without Ramsey?

They will be fine, the team know their roles. I expect Joe Allen to play a bit more of a Ramsey role with maybe Andy King coming in, or Jon Williams coming in.

Either way I think Joe Allen could be a good differential with Ramsey out

Definitely both on my shopping list for the coming fixtures then. At least you'll have Ramsey fresh for a final 😉

Mind me asking which Welsh members will be making it into your team against Portugal next?

Same as Belgium with James Collins and either Williams/King coming in for Ramsey - guy feel it may be King because Coleman likes to spring the odd surprise

    Stick to Hector on captain?

Or twist to either Griezmann, Payet or Umtiti?

      Stick

Stick. 6 points is as good as you'll get now.

Hector only has 5, well 10 with the armband

Still stick. The game is hard enough as it is.

Are you playing to win or playing for a mediocre position?

If the former, twisting is obvious, you stand to lose 3 points at worst unless your (c) gets a card.

Personally I had Hector as captain too and have twisted to Griezmann. Although I'd like to see Iceland win tonight, I still have my wildcard and a France & Belgium exit would be ideal for me really.

He certainly won't tell us lot if he did. Imagine what Daniel would be like. Unbearable.

It'll be between the 10th-20th July if the past is anything to go by.
