The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Klopp’s Liverpool

Our series of members’ articles, which review the statistics behind the previous season, now focuses on Liverpool.

First up, we cast an eye over the Reds’ team statistics under new manager Jurgen Klopp and compare them to the rest of Premier League over his period in charge, before delving into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects for the upcoming campaign.

After steering Liverpool to sixth spot in 2014/15, Brendan Rodgers lasted just eight matches of the following season before parting company with the Merseyside club. The Reds had started brightly enough, winning both their opening fixtures before a run of one victory in the subsequent six – at home to Villa – saw the Irishman replaced by Jurgen Klopp at the helm.

The Reds’ progress to both the Capital One Cup and Europa League finals ultimately proved fruitless and with the German keen to rotate, Liverpool could only manage an eighth-place finish, ending the campaign 21 points behind champions Leicester.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Anyone going for the specialist GW1 AOA team, followed by a GW2 WC?

Start the season full speed down the freeway only to jump out of the car GW2..?

I'm hoping for a more sensible drive myself. 😉

It could easily be a wasted chip, given the uncertainty over GW1 lineups.

I don't see the attraction of the AOA chip tbh. Most seemed to lose points on it last season, myself included.

Yeah I used it GW38, simply because it was still there, and it was a dud root (as the Aussie's say..)

Wouldn't have thought so necessarily. The promoted teams will be at their strongest given their limited squads and are usually harder to beat.

Traditionally yes but sometimes overridden by promoted sides enthusiasm. Someone will have the stats here I am sure.

For me, GW1 is like GW38, with so much incertainty. Best to build a team around the first 4/5 GW's and hope that lady luck smiles on you

Yeah 1-0. Then it was like 2 more wins all season. 😕

I brought in Richards after that game and was continually kicked in the nuts till I got rid about GW10.

Bournmouth signed Jordan Ibe for 15m.

"top prospects" is even a huge underestimation, particularly for Cazorla who was arriving to his peak age, had been ripping it in Spain for years, and was an established Spanish international.

Sure, there's a good margin of progress for him, so he can well have the value. But on the other hand it is also that there are players who are 26 and proven to be worth the £15M or whatever, and imo they're paying the money worth of a player that Ibe may become but only get that prospect of him maybe becoming that good.

That said, I fully understand, with the home grown rule becoming possibly even stricter in future and the ridiculous money PL clubs have, if you find a young English player who can actually be good enough to compete in PL, the price is going to be high. Let's put it this way: Liverpool must also, in the future as well as now, have a decent amount of English players in their team, and the question is how much it costs them to sign a decent English squad player, who has 10 good career years ahead and some potential to _possibly_ develop into a starter in future. That £15M could be a fair estimation.

Off the top of my head - All but Brentford, Brighton, Rotherham, Huddersfield, Burton in the Championship, I'd say. So that's 39 for now. Coventry, Wolves, Bradford, Bolton in L1 - Blackpool & Portsmouth from League 2. That's 45 at least and I'm pretty sure I'll still be 5 or so short.

What are your thoughts on the premium defenders?
I am thinking of going with two of the following:

Man Utd: As of now, it looks that Shaw maybe the best attacking option from the back four. Jose has one wing back to be more attacking and the other full back to give defensive stability like Ivanovic that more attacking and Azpi giving cover.

Man City: Think one of Guardiola's full back(maybe the LB) will be key from fantasy prospective. He uses the full back's in a very attacking way in some games. Take Alba or Alaba for example. They were practically playing as midfielders in some of the matches. Maybe watch out for Bruno Peres or Fabinho if city can land one/both of them.

Arsenal: I think Bellerin will again be the most attacking but he won't come cheap due to his last year's performance. Maybe Gabriel could nail down a place and he'll be a little cheaper.

Spurs: Alderweireld. But they'll have champions league this time around.

Chelsea: I liked Conte's defensive tactics in Italian colors but it was with Italy and they are always defensively strong. Feel Chelsea are going to keep a lot of cleanies but not sure who the best pick could be.

Liverpool: Having no Europe to worry about is surely good for their prospects and many believe Klopp will bring the best out of the squad. I feel they will be a good side in front of the goal but not to sure if we can trust their defensive strength as of now. For me their defence will be wait and watch.

At the moment I am contemplating of going with:
    Shaw, City/Chelsea, Cheap 3-way rotation

But it would be great if you guys could share your thoughts. 🙂

I doubt I'll bother with rotation. I'll probably try and get 3 in that can stick around for 5 or 6 games and play them.
