Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 9

Two more players toppled off the Suspension Tightrope at the weekend after collecting their fifth cautions of the domestic campaign.

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson and West Brom defensive midfielder Claudio Yacob were the guilty parties after both were booked in Saturday evening’s late clash at Anfield.

Henderson, rather conveniently, will serve out a one-match suspension when the Reds take on Spurs in Tuesday’s EFL Cup fourth round tie, meaning he is available for Gameweek 10’s trip to Palace.

Yacob, however, will miss this weekend’s visit of Man City to the Hawthorns as the Baggies have already been eliminated from the EFL Cup in earlier rounds.

Four new players will be living life on the disciplinary edge after picking up their fourth yellow cards in Gameweek 9.

Everton midfielders Idrissa Gueye and Gareth Barry are amongst the latest recruits.

The former made it three yellows in his last four starts, while veteran bad boy Barry has seen more cautions than a health and safety poster designer – his latest, at Burnley, was his 113th, extending his own Premier League record once again.

James McClean hit an unwanted hat-trick at Liverpool. His third consecutive card in the league, when added to another in the EFL Cup against Northampton, leaves him teetering.

Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen made it two cautions in a row at Bournemouth to go with the consecutive cards he was shown in September.

The 7.9%-owned centre-half will need to tread carefully – at least until Toby Alderweireld returns from a leg injury – if Tottenham want to avoid stretching their resources even thinner.

Vertonghen is one of three players currently sitting on four yellows who also have an EFL Cup fixture in midweek.

Essentially, then, he could still be banned for the Gameweek 10 visit of Leicester City if he plays and is cautioned at Anfield tomorrow night.

Diego Costa and Marouane Fellaini are the two other names.

Sitting in 35% of Fantasy Premier League squads, Costa is clearly the biggest concern.

Chelsea’s frontman continues to defy his dark side with a third straight card-free match. The Blues’ EFL Cup trip to West Ham on Wednesday would have been an ideal time to serve a ban, but Diego is clearly above such cold calculations.

If he’s booked against the Hammers, though, Costa would miss the Gameweek 10 trip to Southampton next Sunday.

Yet over 38,000 FPL managers have already drafted him in this week, with the Spain international’s price rising overnight to 10.3.

Six other players remain precariously balanced after a guilt-free Gameweek – Robert Huth, Gaston Ramirez, Marouane Fellaini, Jose Holebas and the Stoke pair of Ryan Shawcross and Marko Arnautovic.

Holebas is the second most transferred in defender ahead of Gameweek 10, having served up a goal, assist and two clean sheets in three outings.

A trio of players will be back in the fold for this weekend after serving their respective suspensions.

Defenders Aaron Cresswell and Jonny Evans have completed their one-match bans, while Burnley striker Andre Gray’s four-match punishment for unsavoury tweets from back in the day is finally over.

Sam Vokes has scored back-to-back goals in his absence, so Gray’s status as a changed man might include another novelty – sitting on the bench – after starting all five matches prior to his suspension.

Outwith Yacob, Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka is the only player who will definitely miss Gameweek 10 at this point. He sits out the Gunners’ EFL Cup tie with Reading in midweek and the upcoming trip to Sunderland.

Finally, Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko could be in for a three-match ban after he was charged with violent conduct following his touchline spat with Harry Arter. Sissoko claims he didn’t know his Arter from his elbow and the Bournemouth midfielder has accepted his claim that it was a mistake.

The FA might not be so magnanimous, however. If found guilty, Sissoko would miss this week’s EFL Cup tie at Liverpool as well as the next two crucial Gameweeks – Leicester at White Hart Lane and then the North London derby.

He has until 6pm tomorrow to respond.

Shifting to the referees, surprisingly, we were without a single penalty award all weekend. That’s the first spot-kick blank of the season.

We’re still averaging 3.44 penalties per Gamewweek after 10 fixtures which still outstrips the 2.95 of the last campaign.

The Michaels, Dean and Oliver (both 6 in 8), still lead the way in terms of penalty awards, ranking alongside Roger East (3 in 4) who was without a Premier League assignment in Gameweek 9.

The yellow card average is now sitting at 3.87 per game, just six men in black sit above that average (out of the 17 used to date), with Kevin Friend topping the list on 5.60 per game.

Robert Madley (5.33), Jonathan Moss (5.14), Neil Swarbrick (4.40), Mark Clattenburg (4.40) and Mike Dean (4.13) make up the six.

Quick question lads, have 1FT (0.5m ITB) with no pressing issues apart from GKs. Pick/Jaku combo.
    Should I -
    A) Save FT and play Pick home to Arsenal
    Or
    B) use FT on Pick to another GK up to 4.6m - maybe Boruc

    Aguero

    26th Oct (A) Manchester United - EFL
    29th Oct (A) West Brom - PL
    1st Nov (H) Barcelona - CL
    5th Nov (H) Middlesbrough - PL
    10th Nov (A) Brazil - WCQ
    15th Nov (H) Colombia - WCQ
    19th Nov (A) Crystal Palace - PL
    23rd Nov (A) Monchengladbach - CL
    26 Nov (A) Burnley - PL
    3rd Dec (H) Chelsea - PL

And then the Christmas fixture pileup kicks in, with trips to Leicester, Celtic, Arsenal and Liverpool.

With Iheanacho on form, and Pep willing to play with a false 9 in some games, I'm personally abandoning ship. I have a 13.1m player who 1) I can't captain, 2) who is dwindling in form, 3) is subject to rotation.

Yes his PL fixtures look nice but look at the other fixtures around that. Is Pep going to want Kun for "wba" and "MID" or United and Barcelona? Too much risk over what should be a simple answer.

Wonder how this applies to the other City assets? With Sane, Nolito and Iheanacho Guardiola has strong options. De Bruyne and Sterling under threat surely in the coming weeks? Perhaps De Bruyne is the safest bet going forward at the moment?

Also, there is nobody really who can replace him.

Ibrahimovic - Clearly a punt as has not scored in 5 games, United look poor, he's missing big chances left and right.

      Kane - Injured

Costa - 4 YC's. If you've got backup on the bench, he'de be the obvious replacement

Lukaku - If you don't already have him, get him ASAP

All that's left are the cheapies like Austin/Wilson/etc.
I wouldn't get rid of Aguero for the sake of doing a transfer, I'de only get rid if you have a plan with how you want your team to end up.

If we have learned anything from last year, it's that large sums of money ITB makes no difference to a GW score.

I don't see why people have to replace Aguero with one of Ibra, Costa, Kane, Lukaku or another premium striker. But I understand the teams with the fixtures at the moment like Hull, Stoke and Liverpool haven't got a striker worth investing in.

So far he has played a false 9 once against Barca. Plenty of teams have experimented with formations and tactics when trying to beat Barca in the past and Aguero started the next game in the league . He played Aguero against United who were playing very well at the time so I am not going to worry about it till he tried it in the Prem . Kelchi will definitely get a start at some point he definitely deserves it but I don't think the threat of rotation is much greater than when Pelle was in charge . Pep was talking about rotating for the United game instead of the West Brom game in the press . Most of the doubt has been created on here imo .

      1) Why can't you captain him?
      2) I agree he's not in a great form but he's still the best striker in the league. He will find form.
      3) I don't think he's subject to rotation. The Barcelona game was a one off imo.

I'm also considering this "bold" move. I say "bold" because it could really hurt me because it's Aguero we are talking about, but I think your arguments make it a very reasonable decision. Rotation is a real threat, as is his prospects because of Pep tactics.

Problem is which replacement is good enough? Maybe it's wise to get a form player from a form team like Costa, and then play someone like Allen when he gets banned. Ideally I would want United to show improving signs in attack, because Ibra home to Burnley this GW could be huge! But it could also be another Stoke game with Heaton pulling of zillions of saves...

Another option for Aguero replacements could be the "Hull-hunting". Deeney this GW and then Austin the next one. It could be a shrewd move, but short term moves like these often end up in tears according to my experience.

          Hey Gilbert!

That's absolutely what I was considering and also the reason why I'm not going to do it. Kind of feel Kun needs a couple more games yet before making the drastic move; am going to take him until the next international break, then use my 2FT there if it's no longer worth it!

          Such a pain, though!

    9. @SirAustinDangerPowers
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

      Definitely considering this.
Will give him the next 2 games till International break and will reassess then.
Got him back in at 12.9 so can make 0.1 now but willing to give him 2 more games.

The real issue here is even if we cover City with KdB and get Wilson or Austin in as 3rd forward still that doesn't leave much funds to improve the team massively.

Aguero out will work much better for those still holding their WCs as they can properly reinvest in areas of squad rather than those of us who will only likely be able to do Aguero plus 4th mid to KdB plus Austin/Wilson.

Let us know what you got to replace Aguero and how did it change your setup.

To me, this isn't really about Kun but about tactics.

I don't own Kun but if I did then there is absolutely no way I would ditch him now.

Given his high price and recent low point scores I would suggest that if you still have Kun then your team is all likelyhood probably struggling in the middle ranks.

In which case if you ditch him all you do is become a clone of the many teams already ranked above you without Kun.

Quite simply, the best differential you have to climb the ranks is to keep, captain and hope for the best.

lose Aguero at your peril, At some point Pep will realise that he will have to play to Kuns strong points, its getting tight at the top of the league now and he wont want to risk "too" much.

          Pep can be very stubborn.

He is not prepared to admit that he may have made a bad mistake in loaning out Joe Hart, bringing in Bravo to replace him and insisting on his goalkeeper and defenders playing risky passes instead of clearing the ball quickly and safely when facing a high press.

And he also points to the number of trophies he has won by playing with a false nine and insisting on his strikers tracking back.

He will be hoping he can train his players to play according to his strategy, and if he can't then he will probably replace them with new signings, but I think it unlikely that he will abandon his principles and start playing to Kun's strong points instead.

It is not really stubborn it is single minded. He has a belief in what he thinks is the best way to win trophies and he is not going to stray from that.

City were nowhere near winning the champions league before he took over and he wants to push them on to that level and the only way he thinks that can happen is if he can instil his ideas in the team.

Take a look at my team as an example of what you can do without Aguero:

      Cech
Walker Valencia Holebas Pieters A. Smith
      Sanchez Walcott Mane Firmino Arnautovic
      Lukaku Benteke Rashford

      ------------------------------------------------------

I have multiple captaincy options each week. More importantly, I have a lot of players that are playing 1 game a week, being rested in other comps (Cech, Walker), etc.

I feel like my team is positioned to really make a big climb in the rankings. I have great matchups and great balance. Yeah I might bench the odd goal or assist, but I'm fine with that.

People need to take a step back and realize Aguero is a waste of money at the moment.

The one thing I would point out about this logic is their poor run has come at same time as kun rest and false nine. Surely pep won't continue with a tactic that his team as a whole aren't capable of performing.

I agree with all that....except you missed

      4) City look every bit as good with Iheanacho and no Aguero when they've had to. That makes rotation easier for Pep.

I've calculated he plays in EFL and a possible rest/reduced mins against WBA and then plays against Barca (being as they got thumped without him last time). He then plays against Boro and rested again against Palace after his travels.

We'll see...but the key to it is that this season they have Iheanacho, who slots in with no problem now, and the daft strikerless formation in the background. Aguero simply will not play all those games that you've listed imo...

I have the exact amount to do Aguero + Capoue -> Coutinho + Costa (for a -4)

I see the logic behind Aguero not being worth the price this season, but its Aguero - the very idea of removing him from the team sounds absurd when i say it out loud.

Though getting 2 in-form players in return is enticing at this stage

      Any thoughts?

      I'm keeping for the moment.

Aguero imo will start the next couple prem games. City are on a poor run at the moment and Pep will know he needs to start his best players. They're joint top with Arsenal and Us and I'm fairly sure he will want to stay in the race if not lead it!

This is coming from a non costa / lukaku owner, (was going to get bolasie as lukaku cover but opted for Shaqiri this week)

Aguero will hit form in the next few games, in fact he's 'due'. I don't want to miss it when he does, especially with people getting rid.

      Pickford (Jaku)

      Holebas Bellerin Lovren (McAuley Amat)

      Mane Coutinho Walcott Sanchez Shaqiri

      Benteke Aguero (Diomande)

Getting Lukaku for Aguero allows me to bring in Alonso for Lovren, improve my keeper and third striker / shaqiri to a better striker / mid.

But I really think that Aguero will fire! When he does he'll fire big.

That's what's so dificult. Hazard looking very good again and I think he will be up there at the end of the season. De Bruyne has also shown class though and I think he is more explosive plus has the fixtures. It's the schedule and Guardiola's current tinkering that is putting me off...

Yes, all the more reason to go Hazard then.
