Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 18

With seven goals in as many league outings, it would be no surprise to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.3) claiming the top spot in our latest Captain Poll.

The Manchester United forward, who has been acquired by 154,000+ Fantasy Premier League managers since a weekend brace at West Brom on Saturday, also has the fixture to warrant attention when Sunderland pay visit; David Moyes’ troops have shipped 13 goals and failed to keep a clean sheet in their eight league road trips.

His team-mate Paul Pogba (8.3) is another who may garner attention, with only Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen (8.6) managing more shots on target among midfielders over the last four Gameweeks.

Interest in 15.2% owned Eriksen, as well as for Spurs striker Harry Kane (11.3), will surely be muted this week after the pair both blanked in yesterday’s 2-1 home victory over Burnley.

For the 19.5% owned Kane, that failure to find the net could be terminal for his long-term armband prospects after he also disappointed at home to Hull City in midweek.

Dele Alli (8.1) offers an alternative Spurs option after scoring against the Clarets, although this was his first league goal since Gameweek 8.

Spurs travel to a Southampton side that has conceded a mere five goals at St Mary’s this term – only Chelsea can boast a better defensive record in front of their own supporters.

Players from Arsenal should fare better in our latest poll.

Even though they were beaten 2-1 away to Manchester City yesterday, Theo Walcott (7.8)’s goal, assisted by Alexis Sanchez (11.8), bodes well for their chances of success when West Brom visit on Boxing Day.

The 36.5% owned Chilean has now either assisted or scored in five successive Gameweeks, while the 15% owned Walcott has three goals over the same period.

Fellow Gunner Mesut Ozil (9.6) is also likely to attract votes, after scoring three goals in seven league starts at the Emirates Stadium.

Diego Costa’s fifth booking of the season, ahead of his winning goal in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory away to Crystal Palace on Saturday, has deprived the poll of one of its most consistent captaincy candidates. This leaves Eden Hazard (10.4) as the strongest route among the Blues assets when Bournemouth drop by on Boxing Day.

Away from home, Eddie Howe’s backline has been breached 16 times and managed just one clean sheet. Meanwhile, Hazard is joint top of the home goals table for midfielders alongside Walcott.

Another team treated to an obliging tie in Gameweek 18 are Manchester City, who travel to one of the league’s long-suffering home sides, Hull City.

The Tigers are yet to keep a clean sheet at home and have conceded 15 times in front of their own fans, the second-worst tally behind Swansea City.

But in the continued absence of Sergio Aguero, selecting which of City’s assets will offer the strongest returns remains tricky.

Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) looks likely to offer the most favourable prospect. Over the last four Gameweeks, the 9.3% owned Belgian has registered more attempts and chances created than any of this team-mates, assisting twice.

Raheem Sterling (7.9), who scored his first goal since Gameweek 5 against Arsenal on Sunday, offers an alternative.

Liverpool’s assets also have the fixture to merit attention when Stoke City visit Anfield on December 27. The Potters have conceded in six of their eight away trips, while no side has recorded more attempts on goal at home than Jurgen Klopp’s men.

As with City, selecting the best option will be tough, as points are spread across the Liverpool team.

Adam Lallana (7.4) and 8.7% owned Divock Origi (6.8) have the better chance on form. The pair have scored three times and have an assist each over the last four Gameweeks, ahead of tonight’s Merseyside derby.

Sadio Mane (9.4)’s two assists and a goal over that period may also entice votes, although with no attacking returns since Gameweek 11 Roberto Firmino (8.6)’s suitors are likely to be few and far between.

Among this week’s key differential armband options are Christian Benteke (7.7) and Wilfried Zaha (5.7), who have form and fixture on their side when Crystal Palace travel to Watford.

The 10.2% owned Belgian will be looking for his ninth goal of the campaign during this fixture, while only De Bruyne can match Zaha’s four away assists this term. It is worth noting that the 11% owned Zaha has also scored three times on the road. Watford have just one clean sheet in eight matches at Vicarage Road this season.

Swansea City players also have a strong fixture to raise their captaincy credentials, as West Ham make their way to South Wales.

Slaven Bilic’s men boast just one clean sheet all season and have allowed 17 goals away from home, which offers hope of returns from Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.5) and 5.1% owned Fernando Llorente (6.3) in particular.

The Swans’ Spanish striker has notched four times over his last two Liberty Stadium league games, while the 10.2% owned Sigurdsson has scored or assisted in his last four appearances on home turf.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What is the elusive secret of success this season?

I’ve read a few posts over the last few days about FPL needing to change its rules or alter how prices change. A lot of this I think has come from a search for this season’s elusive secret of success.

So when seeking changes to FPL I think many Fantasy managers are simply trying to work out how to do well in season where the usual tried and tested strategies are often not working.

Here's a few common strategies that have failed to convince this season.

    Fixtures

This week is a classic example – many top managers planned well by bringing in and then captaining Kane for the last two home games, against Burnley and Hull. He failed to deliver, showing that fixtures can perhaps no longer be trusted.

There are of course examples where fixtures can help a team to success but incidents like the Kane © can live long in the memory.

    Form

But what of form? Eriksen came into Gameweek 17 in great form. Those that drafted him in for the Burnley game were left disappointed with Alli and the Spurs full backs doing well.

    Underlying Stats

They don’t get better than Eriksen’s up to GWK 17 but we know what happened next. But also perhaps the best example was Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had the best attacking stats of any striker ahead of and during his long barren run. His owners are being rewarded now but its been a long wait. How can we detect when good underlying stats will result in a barren run or a goal glut?

    Patience

That leads to patience as a strategy that has failed this season for many. Those that stuck with Ibrahimovic endured many weeks of failed captaincy punts and 2 pt returns from the big Swede. But those that stuck with Costa were rewarded every week. Patience with Sanchez ensured they kept him 23 point haul to counter the argument. But is that a way we want to play the game – to make few changes, go through successive average and low weeks only to grab a premium players occasional stellar haul? Maybe for some that is how it should be played and will ultimately be the secret of success?

    Moving quickly

Another strategy that has been questionable has been to act swiftly to the market, to leap on bandwagons. But since his 23 pt haul Sanchez’s returns have been minimal. And then there’s Kane since his 13 pt haul against Swansea. Moving onto the latest top gwk scorer has hardly been successful this season. As F Society so excellently put it a while back - its all about chasing tails.

    Your Thoughts...

Of course there are stories and arguments of success and failure for each of these strategies but I wanted to present some quick thoughts on each here to get a discussion going on what is the secret of success this season.

With underlying stats, form, fixture, patience and moving quickly all presenting mixed results what kind of manager can prevail this season when at whatever rank you are the Gameweeks feel like one step forward, one step back.

What strategy have you had most success with? What strategy do you think this season will be remembered by?

Is it any different to others and will luck ultimately and frustratingly prove to be the master of 16/17?

Last season after all FPL was won by a manager in his first season who didn’t follow any strategy, who stuck with the same one or two captains and admitted his own driving force behind decisions was to act on “his gut” ...whatever that means.

Taking lots and lots of hits due to no patience .I've done 33 transfers (18 hits) so far and i'm on 15k...and i'm gonna blow my WC on the first day again.

4 or 8 or 12 points can move up or down tens of thousands of places. I'm very cautious about the hits.

My game plan for the past three years has been ending up with a hit a week. I always play that way.

Have you gone over them at the end of the season to see how much your hits earned you back?

Or is it more complicated than that in that your hits also enabled you to achieve as significantly higher TV which over the course of the season enabled you to climb higher due to a squad which had more high value players?

Nah. I do most of my transfers due to playing mind games with my little family league. They get Kane I sell Kane...they sell Aguero I get Aguero. I've been doing it for years. That accounts for at least half my transfers.

So for example. I've had Benteke all season since signed for Palace. I love the big fella but my brother got him two weeks ago....Benteke > Rondon for me now...no more complicated than that.

              And keep my fingers crossed

I think one of the main routes to success is not constantly taking hits... Its a theory not liked too much on here which its been said that hits make it fun which is fair enough... i have really clamped down on my hits this season and my rank has never been as good but id agree lack of hits takes fun away.. So its fun or success in my book.. pick one..

i largely agree with this. i've only taken four -4s this season and currently have my highest rank ever. (every GW i've taken a hit has been followed by a red arrow as well)

Though I have rolled less FTs over this year as I generally would have rather two FTS every other week (where a -4 feels almost like a mini WC) than a FT a week.

These next few GWs will severely test hit-averse managers though...

Seriously though, a combination. I took Kane out last week because it was plain to see he was playing kak, I also took Hazard out due to kakness and Zaha due to Chelsea.

Meanwhile Zlatan has been playing really well, as have United and that's where the fixtures are.

That's an excellent example. Taking Kane out ahead of Burnley at home when you also know many others will captain him and that Dembele was likely to return. That to me goes against almost all known fantasy football strategies of success.

But crucially you used the 'eye test there. You saw Kane wasn't playing well and had little prospects of getting better. You saw Zlatan was in great form and ManU too.

Great example. I think lessons learned from that are - to truly go your own way and watch games.

Speaking of which, Jonty, did you see Kane play yesterday? You were hoping that Burnley sitting deep would mean Kane wouldn't need to drop back for the ball ... was that the case, did he stay up front?

Yet Kane had more penalty box touches. So while it looked like Eriksen was more advanced during play...when Spurs had the ball he wasn't. It was Kane who was the main man.

It went exactly as I predicted.

Kane had more pen box touches than any player

Heaton did well - with 7 saves - which made Kane's life hard.

Eriksen was indeed restricted to long range efforts.

Because they concede alot of shots in the box but also have a good keeper it meant anyone can score - which happened. Alli was able to move in and Rose too.

Kane to me didn't actually seem too bad - which sounds odd - but he had the chances and was in the right position but it was always going to be a game where the scorers would be random.

I still captained Kane as I thought he out of anyone would have a chance to score due to be in the box more than anyone else. So is a good example of being half right about using stats but half wrong in having faith that Kane would be the one to ultimately prosper.

My gut actually said go Costa or Sanchez as they are more consistent...but that would have only earned me 3-4 pts more.

My gut in GWK 19 says Ibrahimovic as Chelsea without Costa is an unknown. Hazard could do well - but luck will have to play a part.

Has to be Zlatan this week or Alexis. Hazard isn't even on my radar for captaincy.

I did the same in GW10.
I watched City and it was plain to see that Aguero was playing kak, I also watched United and saw that Ibra was playing well despite going through a barren run. Then I looked at the fixtures and saw that Ibra has BUR while Aguero has wba. So, I sold Aguero for Zlatan and captained the latter.
Taking captaincy into account I lost 30 points in one single move.

I would say that success this season has been for those who hit regularly, and have been lucky enough to take the right hits. The template-following strategy with no hits that has been a fairly safe option in the past has led to low TV and, in many cases, low scoring.

No correct formula for success imo, different things works for different managers.

A proper balance between playing with numbers, patience and luck might get us close to top ranks.

Not taking out players unless there is a seriously valid reason for it such as:

      - Injury
      - Suspended
      - Terribly fixtures coming up for at least 4 gameweeks or more

Form always comes and goes over a season no matter how good a player you are very rarely do we see a player score well all season - Mahrez last season granted but nobody else.

With Costa/Ibra/Alexis fixtures(not to mention Coutinho returning) for GW 21-> being excellent they ain't leaving my team.

Personally though I'm sure nobody will agree I'd rather have Hazard than Costa.

I currently have Costa but haven't and prob never will captain him as I don't think his points ceiling is high enough.

Hazard's on the other hand is & that is what makes me ditch a big hitter.

For the same reason I would only ever own Aguero not KDB, although KDB's points ceiling is high why would you captain him over Aguero if you had them both...you simply wouldn't so if you want to fit in as many big hitters as possible KDB is not an option.

Most people seem to be going for max 4 big hitters & I think the 4 to go for long term are:

              - Aguero
              - Ibrahimovic
              - Hazard
              - Sanchez

I've found acting swiftly has been the key to it this season, was slow towards the start but changed my strategy around GW9 and seen a rank increase from 1.9m to c 750k this week. Not great still but 7 green arrows out of 8.

Gut and luck is a lot of it.

I've also found you can't plan ahead that much this season, due to injuries/form etc. Everyone seems to be jumping on the same bandwagons at the same time, because there's only one bandwagon at a time, if that makes sense.

Interestingly the guy who won last year kept backing Kane who everyone hates on here now (I'm keeping).

I think there's a lot to be said about following your gut. My worse transfer decisions have been because I ignored what I felt and gave into the opinions of the swaying masses and hopped onboard what they were doing.

I'm currently trying to be patient, even after a disastrous GW. I'm hoping good players will come good. I'm hoping that as people swarm to the latest FPL must-have (Ibra this week), I'll be left behind to do well.

        +1

Fuchs over Alonso(the week Scmeichel got inj) was the final nail in my FPL coffin this season. I was scared since all on here went Fuchs and he was the most trsfred in def that week.

Alonso had stats and the eye test backing him up. I ended up paying 0.5m more for him and missed his hauls.

          That's another good example.

I too made that move - knowing full well that Zieler was rubbish. I know Lei conceded twice v Stoke but watching the highlights showed how good Schmeichel is. I learned a lesson there as you did.

This week I have gone for Ibra - but because I back the masses reasoning there as he has form, fixtures, stats and there is no dramatic change in ManU personnel to suggest he'll regress.

I remember that Friday when the Kasper news broke and how everyone was going on about how bad Zeiler was vs ManU(4-1). I still bought him.

            😥

PS: based on the above, and after not backing my gut/stats on Eriksen/Pva/Alonso I'm getting KdB. i reckon he's the next bandwagon.

KDB's really stepping up and proving consistent. I could do with him being priced a little lower - sort of Ozil territory - that's his sort of potential while Aguero is out.

Hull next and they really are poor at home. ....but I thought Kane would do well against them and look what happened there.

Rotation also worries me over Christmas re Pep.

Keeping the hits to a minimum has always worked well for me, that's because whenever I take a hit it's never planned it's always based on how frustrated I am by the current week. I think that's my first tip to myself, have some detachment rather than acting on emotion.

Second thing is not relying too heavily on the consensus on here. That led me to take a hit to get Son, who was seen as the new Ronaldo here, who then got successive blanks.

Yes, normally me to, but not this season.

If you take a 4pts hit taking out a player who's isn't going to play anyway, it's only a 2pt hit, and they might get more?

I usually play for point and takes lots of hits and happy with my ranking at the end of the season.
However, this year, I started with a No-hit reasoning, but ended up in decline.
I dropped from 30K OR to 220K OR in the last 5 weeks.. Since the last 3 weeks, I've been taking hits every week and for the 1st time this week, saw a green arrow. Hopefully it stays green after tonight game, since I don't have any LIV cover.

Clearly in light of the fact that patience doesn't work, moving quickly onto bandwagons at least has the guaranteed result of raising your team value so that as the season moves on, your whole team becomes stronger.

Don't get players just by one good game. That's how I got Sanchez and Kane although I was always saying I don't need them and think they are not worth it. But after their hauls I just had to get it because of fear that they will do it again with higher ownership and I don't own them.

I am in my sixth(?) season playing this game. I have always been a maverick kind of manager and in the last two seasons was beaten in our annual mini-league by my Lithuanian girlfriend, who, before she met me, had never watched a game of football, let alone considered playing a fantasy game based on the Premier League. Anyway, you get the picture - my past results have been less than stellar, usually around the 100k mark OR.

This season tho, things are different. I am maybe taking slightly less hits than usual, but I've still played it my way and its resulted in me being in or around the top 10k OR the last seven gws. This week I took -16 to replace non-starters/doubts in my squad, and my gw rank is currently 200k with two players still to come (Lallana and Can). It really has been about picking the right players to come in at the right time, rather than sticking to the template, and that is, I'm told, one of my strengths.

One thing I would say is that whilst I greatly value this site for information and general opinions I very rarely ask specific questions about moves, because I find there is too much of a 'groupthink' mentality and often moves that would/have paid off, have been discouraged by the community at large.

I stuck to my philosophy and avoided sanchez as his stats were terrible (5 goals from 6 shots inside the box in 4 gws). I wasn't rewarded though as hazard and firmino did nothing either (although keeping Walcott had paid off despite everyone writing him off even though he had better shots in the box stats than sanchez).

Yeah I think Costa had been key this season and those that got hazard and sanchez hauls at the right times.

I'm not doing great but I am actually enjoying the game this season. I did have had to take myself aside and have a word to stop chasing all the latest must haves as it's a sure way to run your team into a horrible place. Now just focusing on my own strategy for teams I think we'll do well and bringing in their players regardless of price or form and hoping it works like earlier this season.

Skill (combining quantitative stats with qualitative footballing eye) and luck. Captaining Kane the last two weeks in the long term was undoubtedly the right move, it just didn't happen. Often plum fixtures disappoint as a resolute away day defence can frustrate. Tottenham will probably surprise and score a few at Saints this week with the help of Harry Kane.

Time to wipe the dust off and reassess. Has got me top 5k last few seasons and there again now.

Not following the fundamentally popular system and players but trusting your own instincts - particularly from watching games. Of course fixtures, history, form, rotation etc. also needs to be taken into account.

Kun has been the classic example for me in this vein this season. New manager, different role, frustrated on field appearance, questionable finishing form - all contributing to the key question: is he value for that price? And these were all observations before his current suspension! So why do many still think he is essential?

The other key for me is to have the kahunas to make transfers ahead of the curve and not wait for players to get hauls. How often do we read on here "I'm giving him another week to show his upturn in form isn't just a fluke." Often this is when the hauls have been missed and then the counter productive affect of chasing those points occurs.

Maybe it's the flipping between strategies too often that holds us back. Not an experienced hit taker myself (ie. bandwagon jumper) and it's sometimes cost me dearly. My head was been turned by TV with little success & I feel I'm constantly just a few xfers away from a good team, but without actually getting there.
      That, plus Iheanacho.

This is my 6th season playing FPL and I don't remember doing lots of mistakes like this year. Just as you fellow managers mentioned earlier, getting Fuchs instead of a Chelsea defender, transferring out Sanchez and Hazard and missing their hauls, keeping faith with Kun, trying to get on late bandwagons, etc.

On the other hand some decisions were obvious to make even though the result is crap. Captaining Kane these past 2 GWs was one of them. Luck also has to be take in consideration. This week I got Toby for Evans. Toby misses out with a back problem. 6 (possibly 7) consecutive red arrows. Time to step up.

Genuinely don't know what the right answer is this season.

Keep looking at my side before each gameweek and thinking I'll be alright this week.
Dropped from 270k to 900k in last 6 GWs.
Had a "conversation" on here with Jonty a few weeks back who said with the players I had it would turn itself around.

Took one big hit a couple of weeks ago to remove some players and get Sanchez in.
Fuchs, Firmino, Austin, Walcott out Sanchez, Cedric, Nacho, Can in. -12. Cedric & Can got injured/ill before playing a game. Nacho didn't start. Still don't think they were necessarily the wrong transfers at the time.
Austin was injured, Fuchs & Firmino were doing nothing (still aren't really). Cedric had good form and fixtures were good, Can had good form for a 4th mid. Nacho a bit punty but last time Kun was out he came in and well. Sanchez for Walcott should still be a decent move.

Only "high point" was mention on Scout Cast as a rough week.

Brought in Toby (for Mustafi injury) 6 pts then injured.

Don't remember having to do so many transfers in such a short space of time for injuries.

Like my team for this week if Toby is fit but who knows.

Bit like buying a lottery ticket at the moment and just hoping I find a formula that works.

Reason, just as it is the key to success in everything else. Most people who play this game are so damn emotional, after week 3/4 it was "nooo I can't possibly sell Ibrahimovic EVEN MORE PEOPLE OWN HIM THAN KANTE and what! For Lukaku! Are you mad? don't you know he only performs when I don't have him in my side. Who cares if it means I could upgrade a player -- (sterling) who is a rotation risk and the least threatening of of 4/5 attacking players when he does start -- to the most proven goal scoring midfielder in the game who has the additional advantage of being featured up front?"

Then when it comes to fixtures demanding lukaku being droped they all refuse to go back to the obvious best option (ibrahimovic) because kane who is lucky if he gets 1 sib per game has had a few penalties in the preceeding weeks and they feel burned because they kept ibra for 4 weeks too long.

Ignoring the obvious is great advice...we can get caught up with certain narratives - but miss the plot twist right in front of us.

Ibrahimovic is indeed a Scando-noir protagonist in this particular metaphor.

      Patience,
with your core players, the ones you believe will be pay off over the season. Many people sell Walcott for eriksen or Sanchez to Hazard and then the next week it's going the other way, stop that.
      Moving quickly,
with the punts and bandwagons, as soon as they don't work out, I'm looking at you Capoue, can't believe how many still have him.
      Eye test,
Seeing kane in any of his matches would have told you he wasn't great.
      3-5-2
The big hitter value is in midfield this season, Kane and Costa have been favorites here for the last 6 weeks. I haven't had either and I'm in the top 500.

The trick is to get the 50/50 decisions right, whether it's through luck or skill. Picking the wrong one from Hazard/Sanchez, Kane/Ibrahimovic, and Firmino/Lallana has been ruining my rank for a while.

The key to success to me is to watch as many games or at least highlights as you can. Trust your eye and don't follow the masses. Example: Coutinho and Mane vs Firmino.

Also spend less on defence. This is the season when no team gets clean sheets persistently (except Chelsea).

Last is to bring as many heavy hitters as possible. 6 is ideal.

I still believe fixtures are important specially with mid priced players. Like Benteke starting GW20

          Totally agree!

Lets calculate with 10 weeks of 50/50 captaincy desicions:

Good Captain A scores 10 points and bad Captain B scores 2 points.

Normally you get 5 out of 10 weeks right.
          10+10+2 (x5) +10+2+2 (x5) =180pts (Captain and Vice Captain)

If you are lucky to pick all of them right.
          10+10+2 x10 =220 pts.

If you are unlucky and get none of them right. 160 points
          10+2+2 x10 =140 pts

Now we have played almost 20 gameweeks.
Among all active managers a few of them have picked the right captain every time.
At the same time a few of them have picked the wrong captain every time.

This means that for just captaincy pick it could differ 150 points in just bad luck for captain desicions.
Then you have to add all other desicions too, like transfers, who to bench etc.¨

But with great knowledge and research you have luck more often.. 😉

I'm up to 11,000 after this week. I've been doing -4 every week nearly sometimes -8. I'm not following bandwagons as such I noticed early that players who have gotten good point s have done so for 3-4 Gws I saw a pattern froming over x number of weeks so I took gambles on transfers and got on these players early which paid off on TV too as people would buy them after. It's all about underlying stats for me mostly though.

The whole fixtures thing which i used to base my game around is long gone these days. The prem league is so competitive now

Using underlying stats frequently, looking at fixtures swings, patience, form, & taking hits. Have done all of that to good success & have been in the top 10k ever since GW3.

(re Zlatan is the true outlier of this as a predictive measure, he's not the rule imo. Underlying stats will tell you he was still playing well & getting into good positions to receive the ball & take good shots. Which is the one of the important aspects for any good striker. The goals were coming either way, but no one can pinpoint when. Zlatan said all this himself in an interview as well btw. I don't think this outlier suddenly rules out underlying stats this season as unreliable)

The best tactic is to be lucky, beats all other methods hands down.
You'll always get someone from the top 100 coming on and saying it's because they haven't taken hits when what they mean is they're top 100 becuase enough of their picks have worked out thus negating the need for hits.
You'll also always get the "I've taken 100 hits and I'm top 5k" post but what you won't get is the hundreds of thousands of people who have taken a similar number of hits and are ranked 2m plus.
Long as you are flexible in your approach and have fun with it the game should pay you back over the season.

Have fun, take hits, get the team you want in a particular game week or long term.

I put in Kane even though I was unimpressed by him on TV the other week. Now rectifying it by swapping for Ibra for a hit.

I'm about 30k, I'm not going to win FPL, I may get close to the top of my ML, but for me it's about having fun.

Personally this year has been about consistant captain picks and keeping board position in the long run.

In a season where so many of the expensive players have been performing well, it's likely that the majority of players will get something from their captain every week. For example, those who've been captaining Firmino recently in the hope of a 14-18 point haul are risking much more than people captaining Hazard, who, even if he only gets a clean sheet and an assist, is likely to get at least 7 points. In an unpredictable season I think it's important to play safe with the captaincy to try and get some secure points.

In terms of board position, I have no sympathy for those bringing in Kane for two weeks (that said, had I had him in my team I would definitely have captained him). In my mind recent transfers would've been much better spent getting in Valencia or Jones who have a nice run of 8 games, or freeing up funds for Zlatan, who's been in good form for a while now.

I've been trying to follow this pattern since a terrible wildcard in week 4 which included Cech, Collins, Stones, Ozil and Hernandez. Since then my OR has gone from 1.7m to 250k, although admittedly I had Sanchez as my captain for his hauls, which helped.

My biggest takeaway after reading this HT and all the replies so far is I need to watch more football (preferably live over highlights, which I usually rely on) and trusting the 'eye test'.

Who is playing well, but just not getting the points and then having the courage to jump on them and have faith. When selling Aguero after his red card I had a tough choice between Costa and Ibra. The formers ownership and consistency thus far scarred me, but Ibra was playing well, had good fixtures coming up and good stats. 'Risked' going for Ibra and got goal and assist, brace and now hisnprice is ridding whilst everyone jumps aboard the Swedish bandwagon.

Now I just need to watch more games and see who is playing well, but are yet to deliver the points. (Easier said then done I know)

I've taken 3 hits this season and still top 1k overall. I only believe in taking hits to make an imperative move happen not to just get the players I'd like in. They have to score very well to make it worthwhile.
There's always 3 players each GW you'd like in but sometimes you just have to prioritise.

In my opinion, all Managers have a natural style of play. Some are more adaptable to different types of seasons than others, normally due to the type of style they have.

I don't believe there is a secret, as I think your overall rank will be a combination of how well your style fits the type of season, and the luck you have on the way. If you try and deviate away from your natural style too much, you may cause yourself problems, and scratch your head at why it has all gone so wrong.

So my keys to success would be to understand you have a style and stick with it, try and adapt it a little, and be as opened minded as possible about any player in the game. I think many of us can say that we continued to ignore Ibra for too long, and suddenly he becomes the 2nd highest scoring forward from nowhere.

I think one reason people are "struggling" this season in terms of rank is simply because there's more active players than before. This means it has less meaning to compare your OR with earlier seasons.

A top10k finish will be much harder to attein this season.

Had forcing people into using a wc pre Xmas made it more competitive pre xmas? I think this coupled with chips definitely which artificially deflate ranks are two reasons why we probably shouldn't worry too much about early season tanks as there are more points available in the second half of the season than the first.

      Sanchez, Hazard, Walcott, Siggy
      Ibra, Origi, Defoe

      Pickford, Phillips, Francis, Stones

What to do with my third defender spot? Currently on Amat but anything would be a -4? Rose a slight doubt too

Any suggestions? Obviously Stones would go 5.9 total to replace him

Can anyone clarify whether Benteke is on 3 yellows or 4 yellows?

He's not in the Suspension Tightrope list but I've heard people say he is on 4 yellows.

Had Payet in the last 3 GWs and he delivered only one goal from a set piece. If he were on penalties it could have been 3 (+ bonus points). West Ham still no form and Payet has often to go deep to deliver the ball to the other box.
But it's Swansea, so could easy work out...

Mou rarely changes his defence once he finds a stable defence..look at how Smalling, Shaw, and Blind has fallen out of favour due to form and injuries...Jones and Rojo will be the pairing barring injuries

Sold Costa last night. I have a fairly decent TV of 107 and really good SV of 104.5 so i'm gonna take my chances with a Zlatan Aguero Rondon front line from WC onwards....also bringing back Coutinho...plus a few other changes.

How does everyone self-rank their gameweeks? I.E whether it was good or not?

I tend to go purely based on score (to begin with)

< 20 - Give up Greg (Unless half the games are postponed)
20 to 29 - Oh dear, Wildcard time?
30 to 39 - Oh dear, a hit to sort this out?
40 to 49 - Ok, lets hope my GW rank isn't too bad.
        50 to 59 - Half-Decent, happy with that
60 to 69 - Good week, good week - Wish I got my captaincy right though
70 to 79 - Great week - I hope I gained ground in my ML
        80+ - Excellent week

depends on the rest of people. Some weeks are low scoring. There's been times this year where rivals have score 30-40 and I got 50-60 and thats quite a few points gained on them.

A lucky cleanie, a goal from the back or a decent captain is the difference them weeks

Surely it's relative. I had a red arrow in gw2 with 72 points, and a green arrow in gw7 with 49. It doesn't matter if you got 80 points every week if everyone else got 100. I look at net point difference with the top end of my money league, then OR

Who's been the player you've been most disappointed in this season? You don't necessarily have to have owned him for long periods

I would say Mahrez, although i'm aware it would've been a huge ask to replicate or even go near last season's performances. He just made FPL fun because he was getting points and was also a joy to watch.

This season, the likes of Matic, Fer, Redmond, McArthur, Milner, Allen and Etienne bloody Capoue have all outscored him

He is lazy but to be fair they all were yesterday except Alexis. At 2-1 down with 15 mins to go the midfield were all walking around

Is Jones nailed with players returning?

Anyone else thinking of Captaining Siggy this week? Home to West Ham!

Do you think Jones is nailed with players returning?

Apparently Mourinho doesn't like to rotate CB partnerships and then Baily has AfCon... so nailed until he's injured is the current thinking

I see your logic. Great at home. I watched him live on Saturday and he's such a class act. Sanchez, Haz and Ibra stand outs tho

Yeah, but I don't have Ibra and don't plan to get him. I'm swapping out Kane for Benteke and then Anichebe for Aguero for Burnley.

I don't think I'm going to Captain Hazard after his recent performances so that leaves Sanchez. That's definitely a good option, but West Brom are playing well and I think Arsenal might struggle to score many.... Sanchez could easily blank in a low scoring game.

For the coming GW, would you play De Roon over any of these defenders?

        a) Stones (hul)

        b) Holebas (CRY)

        c) Barragan (bur)

Maybe over Stones because he may won't start.

De Roon first sub, in that case. Selling Stones after this GW regardless, but surely have to start him vs. Hull on the off chance he does start!

Looks decent to be fair. Maybe downgrade Can and use the funds somewhere else.

          Risky going without Sanchez, though.
