The Stock Check – Gameweek 19 – Friday

The set-piece prowess of Robert Snodgrass comes to the fore but fails to earn Hull City victory as Ross Barkley stoops to head a first goal since Gameweek 10. Here’s the Stock Check following Friday’s fixture.

On the Rise

Robert Snodgrass
Snodgrass produced two stunning free-kicks, one striking the woodwork, the other finding the top corner of Everton’s net.

His sixth goal of the season, a fourth from a dead-ball scenario, elevated him once more in our thinking as a low-to-mid price midfield asset.

The Scot’s record is therefore maintained: he has either scored or assisted 50% of Hull City’s goals this season.

That ensures that Snodgrass must remain on our radar as a fourth midfielder to allow heavy investment up front, or a fifth option in a 3-5-2.

However, Hull City’s fixtures continue to provide a major barrier.

While they next face a trip to West Brom and a vital home clash with Bournemouth, following that, the Tigers are cursed with an evil run that will likely limit Snodgrass’ output.

Mike Phelan’s side must endure visits to Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, with a home fixture with Liverpool also scheduled for the following four Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines
A beautifully flighted cross served up Ross Barkley’s equaliser and saw Baines record just a third assist of the season.

It represented the left-back’s third attacking return in six Gameweeks and came packaged with the maximum bonus points, taking him to eight over that spell.

Ronald Koeman’s decision to revert from a three-man backline, shifting Baines from wing-back to a traditional full-back role was disappointing. But that tactical tweak may be revisited and, with Everton’s schedule improving markedly, it seems wise to monitor Baines’ underlying numbers in the coming weeks.

The jury is still out on the preferred Toffees full-back option, with Seamus Coleman’s energy arguably offering a greater level of goal threat. However, Baines left-foot supply and spot-kick duties are factors in his favour, with current form suggesting that he is the go-to option.

Ross Barkley
Dare we consider Barkley?

A source of much frustration for his manager and Fantasy managers alike, he has the talent to deliver but has once again disappointed in this campaign.

Perhaps the goal on Humberside, just his third of the season, will provide the catalyst for greater contributions, though we’re unlikely to jump the gun.

Everton’s fixtures promote further attacking returns, but Barkley has never provided that consistent source we crave and expect from a player with such ability.

In Decline

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian upped his goal threat, mustering four attempts on the night, one of which struck an upright.
But ultimately, Lukaku failed to follow up on his superb Gameweek 18 goal at Leicester City and allowed another plum fixture to drift by without profit.

In truth, this is typical of Lukaku as a Fantasy asset.

He can rarely be relied upon to deliver according to fixture; his points arrive in bouts, with his form remaining devilishly difficult to predict.

Everton are scoring goals, and the schedule remains favourable, but this is not necessarily a signpost for sustained returns from Lukaku.

Mason Holgate
Part of a three-man backline in the 2-0 win at Leicester City, the 4.0 valued defender claimed more than 35,000 new owners ahead of the trip to the KCOM Stadium, also earning a place on our Scout Picks bench.

But Koeman’s decision to depart from a winning formation and revert back to a 4-2-3-1 relegated Holgate to the bench, rendering his future as a Fantasy asset uncertain once more.

Koeman hinted that he will change personnel again for the visit of Southampton to Goodison Park on Monday.; it remains to be seen if that finds Holgate recalled and revived.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Morning.

    Cech Pick
    Alonso Lovren Holebas Pieters Chambers
    Sanchez Siggy Lallana Pedro Carrick
    Ibra Kane Defoe

    2 FT 0 ITB

    Kane/Defoe/Pedro => Agüero/Rondon/Phillips -4?

Kun (BUR) Rondon and Phillips (HUL)
    vs.
Kane (CHE) Defoe (LIV) Pedro (tot)

Could potentially make up the -4 in the first week already.

But does it make sense to you also longer term??

Thanks. I'll obviously wait and see the games first but this is definitely a likely option for me now.

Only thing is doubling up on WBA attack...

Looks good short term but long term I'd want to keep Pedro with that team and downgrade siggy and I don't think Phillips will be good enough long term either.

In terms of assetts your giving away 3 good ones for 1 good and 2 average, and also loading up on WBA players.
It could cost you points cumulatively but you will probably end up doing it anyway.

Disagree - never captain Lukaku - too unpredictable.

99 points for a player initially priced at 9.0m. He is outscoring Ozil, Payet, KDB, Silva, Kane, Coutinho, Alli, Benteke etc.

Accept there are a few gems this season (Lallana, Defoe, Chelsea defence), but actually he would be alright if choosing between a 3rd midfielder / 3rd striker.

It's probably not fair to compare him to the Mids as you have to take the format of the game into account, comparing him to the forwards in terms of ppg (5.5) he's really where he should be in terms of his value just behind KOBRA but level with Kane (5.4), Defoe (5.2) and ahead of Tekkers (4.1) who all have penos.
Defoe looks the forget and fire option here really possibly Tekkers with those fixtures.
I like the guy but I think there's room for improvement, I think I was just highlighting what the article was 'shouting'.

I think you have to compare to the midfielders because I need to get the best return for my money. If I spend £9m on Lukaku I can't spend £9m or more on Ozil, KDB, Silva etc. I am now looking at a front 8 of the below because it looks good value given current form (all top 8 PL teams) and future fixtures for the next 8 or so GWs:

Sanchez - Eriksen - Lallana - Phillips - (De Roon)
          Costa - Ibra - Lukaku

          1. HVT
            • 13 Years

Personally I'd upgrade Phillips and downgrade Lukaku maybe even claw back some value from a def
And get someone like Wally/Sterling/Siggy/Antonio and have Defoe/Tekkers up top.
I think that having him in your case makes your Mids more awkward if you need to get to a Bandwagon, say someone like Mhicki gets going-you can't get him in 1 move without dropping Sanchez.

Fwiw here's my front 8, I'm not saying it's perfect but bar the 3rd striker I'm quite flexible.
            Sanchez/Hazard/Erik/Siggy/Fletch
            Ibra/Costa/Origi

            1ft/1m itb.

Could be an interesting one. Depends on how BFS plans to get goals from open play. Benteke needs more service than someone like Defoe at Sunderland. BFS had the workmanlike Borini at Sunderland on the wing and not sure Townsend works that hard without the ball, otherwise he would probably still be at Spurs. Maybe they could play him behind Benteke?

Personally think Townsend is best as an impact player off the bench.

Very tough games next GW for this lot.

Considering moving for Aguero.. A great fixture at least but does it come at too great a cost?

    Heaton (mci),
    Alonso(tot), Walker (CHE).
    Eriksen(CHE), Lallana(sun), Sanchez(bou), Siggy(cry).
    Ibra(whu), Negredo(LEI), Costa(tot),
    Pickford(out), Holebas(sto), Whelan (WAT), Amat(cry).

    1ft, 0.7m in bank.

    1. Cabaye (or Phillips)- Siggy + Aguero - Costa (-4)
    2. Wally- Eriksen + Aguero- Ibra (-4)
    3. Cabaye/Phillips- Siggy.

Hazard owners and Costa owners, what are your thougths on Hazard?

Hazard has been pretty poor value over last few GWs and he has escaped a lot or ridicule purely on his past reputation.

For someone who has no European football his FPL performances have been poor and stats suggest so too. Yeah he's good for the team but always seem to be the assist to the assister.

Last game was different because he had a different role and today Pedro is out and again he faces a team leaking goals.

Despite the tone of this post, I'm still 50-50 and I was a very early Hazard buyer, but this is a season where you can't really carry passengers for too long.

I own both along with Ibra/Sanchez.
I see him as the disposable one of those 4 based on the lack of returns you speak of and a few tough away fixtures on the way where he seems to struggle in terms of FPL points.

Agree. There is better value at the price IMO. I am looking at a front 8 of the following now which includes dumping Hazard. Costa will get the goals IMO:

Sanchez - Eriksen - Lallana - Phillips - (De Roon)
      Ibra - Costa - Lukaku

If I want Aguero, then one of them will go.

I've had Hazard in my team literally all season, it's been very frustrating. Decided to get rid last night (but after the deadline as Stoke should be good). Too many assists for the assisters, as you said.

      Still have Costa though.

Strongly considering losing Hazard to fund Aguero. I'm happy with Costa, and Ibra and Sachez, so Hazard would be the one to make way.

I have 2 FT's but fearing a rotation nightmare next GW. Have always had bad luck with injuries FA Cup week so am I better off saving one and having two then when Coutinho returns?

Current team for next GW is:
    Randolph (Jaku)
    McAuley, Cedric, Azpi (Smith, Amat)
    Hazard, Sánchez, Siggy, Zaha, Amrabat
    Costa, Ibrahimovic (Defoe)

Not sure. Might bring in Phillips or Stanislas for Amrabat

    It's not inconceivable that the fantasy Gods may 'act' over the weekend in terms of showing a pathway to gain a certain 'heavy hitter';
You have been warned-save those transfers...I feel a tremor on the horizon....

I'm already on 2 FTs available, I actually kept them for this transition period (Aguero, Man Utd/West Brom fixture turns) and also because of the massive gap with the gameweeks with the FA Cup weekend in the middle.

This happens every week or couple of weeks. Dump Ibra then he goes on a run. Dump Sanchez and he scores a hatful against West Ham. Dump Hazard he then scores and assists. Patience is key - all good players, but no one delivers every week - if they did they would be priced at £15m and everyone would have them in their team.

He has one bad fixture in the horizon, no need to rotate. If he doesn't produce just get someone else.

A Costa or Ibra 4 match suspension now would make it quite simple to get kun in

Funnt you say that, I'm sure Mourinho was quoted as saying Ibra getting injured would be a disaster almost as if he expects it....

Currently have Origi and Hazard, just looking at transfers and can do those two to Costa and Lallana, or even bit more work probably upgrade Lallana to Coutinho.

    What looks best?

What would you do with my team for next gameweek?

2 free transfers & 0.2m in the bank.

    Heaton
    Alonso Brunt Evans
    Sanchez Hazard Mane Eriksen
    Ibrahimovic Benteke Anichebe

    Pickford Fletcher Lovren Amat

Not bothered about taking Pickford out its waste of a transfer.

    Best Siggy replacement?

I currently have Firmino (planning on getting rid of him after GW20), Zaha (planning on getting rid of him after GW20), Sanchez, Capoue and Siggy.

    1.6 ITB and 2 FTs.
