The Stock Check – Gameweek 19 – Friday

The set-piece prowess of Robert Snodgrass comes to the fore but fails to earn Hull City victory as Ross Barkley stoops to head a first goal since Gameweek 10. Here’s the Stock Check following Friday’s fixture.

On the Rise

Robert Snodgrass
Snodgrass produced two stunning free-kicks, one striking the woodwork, the other finding the top corner of Everton’s net.

His sixth goal of the season, a fourth from a dead-ball scenario, elevated him once more in our thinking as a low-to-mid price midfield asset.

The Scot’s record is therefore maintained: he has either scored or assisted 50% of Hull City’s goals this season.

That ensures that Snodgrass must remain on our radar as a fourth midfielder to allow heavy investment up front, or a fifth option in a 3-5-2.

However, Hull City’s fixtures continue to provide a major barrier.

While they next face a trip to West Brom and a vital home clash with Bournemouth, following that, the Tigers are cursed with an evil run that will likely limit Snodgrass’ output.

Mike Phelan’s side must endure visits to Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, with a home fixture with Liverpool also scheduled for the following four Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines
A beautifully flighted cross served up Ross Barkley’s equaliser and saw Baines record just a third assist of the season.

It represented the left-back’s third attacking return in six Gameweeks and came packaged with the maximum bonus points, taking him to eight over that spell.

Ronald Koeman’s decision to revert from a three-man backline, shifting Baines from wing-back to a traditional full-back role was disappointing. But that tactical tweak may be revisited and, with Everton’s schedule improving markedly, it seems wise to monitor Baines’ underlying numbers in the coming weeks.

The jury is still out on the preferred Toffees full-back option, with Seamus Coleman’s energy arguably offering a greater level of goal threat. However, Baines left-foot supply and spot-kick duties are factors in his favour, with current form suggesting that he is the go-to option.

Ross Barkley
Dare we consider Barkley?

A source of much frustration for his manager and Fantasy managers alike, he has the talent to deliver but has once again disappointed in this campaign.

Perhaps the goal on Humberside, just his third of the season, will provide the catalyst for greater contributions, though we’re unlikely to jump the gun.

Everton’s fixtures promote further attacking returns, but Barkley has never provided that consistent source we crave and expect from a player with such ability.

In Decline

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian upped his goal threat, mustering four attempts on the night, one of which struck an upright.
But ultimately, Lukaku failed to follow up on his superb Gameweek 18 goal at Leicester City and allowed another plum fixture to drift by without profit.

In truth, this is typical of Lukaku as a Fantasy asset.

He can rarely be relied upon to deliver according to fixture; his points arrive in bouts, with his form remaining devilishly difficult to predict.

Everton are scoring goals, and the schedule remains favourable, but this is not necessarily a signpost for sustained returns from Lukaku.

Mason Holgate
Part of a three-man backline in the 2-0 win at Leicester City, the 4.0 valued defender claimed more than 35,000 new owners ahead of the trip to the KCOM Stadium, also earning a place on our Scout Picks bench.

But Koeman’s decision to depart from a winning formation and revert back to a 4-2-3-1 relegated Holgate to the bench, rendering his future as a Fantasy asset uncertain once more.

Koeman hinted that he will change personnel again for the visit of Southampton to Goodison Park on Monday.; it remains to be seen if that finds Holgate recalled and revived.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is Zaha definitely playing for Ivory Coast or can he still make a U turn and commit to England? When will Ivory Coast's 23 man squad be announced?

Am I the only one feeling disappointed by the amount of discussions focusing on "what's wrong with the game", instead of a focus on "how to play the game according to the current rules"?

As a loyal follower of FFS both on site and on Twitter I always expect interesting discussions when a new hot topic has been raised. But for the past month or so I feel many of the discussion topics (not including factual ones, like the famous Özil press conference list) are based on price changes, "aggressive" players, and/or other sides of the game portrayed in a negative manner from disgruntled managers. Perhaps also some of the podcasts are influenced by the same focus. Not saying that these people are disgruntled, but that is how they look to me as a random reader. I view myself as both risk-taking (a much better word for the group, as "aggressive" feels demeaning) and patient, changing from week to week, depending on what is needed in my team and how many uncertainties the week ahead brings.

Is this dsigruntling a focus for them because these people are doing less well this year and are searching for a rational reason for the poor results, grasping at straws and just need a place to let the steam out? If so, could they do it somewhere else, as their mood is infectious, and some of us are trying to make the best of the situation without using so much energy on aspects we cannot change.

Trying to refrain from sounding disgruntled here myself, not sure if I succeeded. Just wanted to put this out there. And I really think that the FPL makers always try to make the game as fun as possible for most users. However, one simply cannot please them all.

Happy New Year to all fans of the game!

You do sound disgruntled. Fair points but then some of the reasons for moaning are justified, I've adapted my game rather than moan about it but not convinced it's for the better. I used to like to mull my transfers over for a while during the week, now I have to thinking of them the week before, in some ways can help the hardcore by planning ahead.

Ah, shoot. Difficult not to complain when not being a native speaker of the tongue 🙂 Good that you adapted, I guess I did the same. Used to do more transfers on Fridays in the previous seasons, but more Sunday transfers this year. More risk-taking, but still not gung-ho crazy.

Fair point that perhaps the guys who were used to always transferring just before the deadline now have to follow the situation much more thoroughly throughout the week. So the hardcore players who have an above average interest in the game benefits the most. Which might leave me without the pity towards the ones who are hurt the most by the changes. Oh well, one simply cannot please them all 🙂

Don't really have time for all the negative type talk, its just healthy debate...pointless healthy debate because its not gonna lead to anything! We all have to play using the same system, some just play it differently to others, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Its not gonna stop me from investing time and effort into the game and quite frankly regarding prices one of my guilty pleasure is seeing a player who drops in price perform well. And I don't mind the speedy price changes this season, keeps you on your toes.

On wards and upwards and Happy New Year to you too!

I feel the same. People fail to adept to changes and suddenly the game is not fun anymore. There are multiple reasons why the transfer market is as it is and one of them is a large number of mid priced midfielders that can score double digits very often. For me this season is actually more fun then the last one because I'm challenged in a different way and need to take difficult decisions.

Sorry for reposting. Posted the same comment on a wrong place.

        You are forgiven, my son.

Jokes aside, the mid priced midfielder galore might be one of the reasons for it.

However, for me, it seems like people do not understand the market mechanisms, and the risk of transferring early means that you can either get pay-off or you can fail miserably. That there are random circumstances this year where fewer players get injured between the gameweeks, and hence giving the risk-takers some advantages. That doesn't mean it won't change in 2017, and we might see injuries to major players every month, making risk-taking and early transfers a less attractive option. Adaptation is key.

The people (myself included) that are highlighting (better word than being disgruntled as this feels demeaning) the negative aspects of the way the game has moved over the past number of years are only doing it so that fpl towers might take notice before the game eventually dies due to lack of proper football strategy game play.

I've been addicted to the game since I found it 9 or 10 years ago and my OR has never had much of an influence over this addiction. I have found myself over the last 4 seasons or so becoming less and less addicted falling almost to a state of apathy with the game due to the over influence on value and the fact that this causes luck to play more and more part in how our seasons go. Add in the chips and you are not playing the game as a football strategy game but a pot luck gambling game where you make blind bids on potential points with very little information.

If we all stayed quiet and let the game die then I don't think we'd be doing anyone any favours.

      1. Stat Sloth
        • 8 Years

You are less addicted. However, you also become older and your life changes through the years. I do not believe for one minute that changes within the game are the only reasons you are less addicted now compared to nine years ago.

I have played for four seasons, and my motivation changes all the time, according to how I cope in real life outside the FFS forums (yes, there is a world out there).

I guess that FPL admins are more interested in the number of gamers, as it collects ad money. It wouldn't be half as interesting for me without a lot of my friends also taking part in the cash leagues. So perhaps the discussion here would be better off focusing on "should the hardcore players who miss the old days start their own manager game seeing that they are a minority among the three million players in FPL?"

I have wondered if this is the reason too but I really don't think that's it. The number of my mates playing the game had drastically fallen also and the number of new guys that take it up only to drift away after a season or two is huge in my mini leagues.

The game used to be about football strategy primarily and people who love football loved it, it is not primarily about football strategy anymore. After deliberating about it for quite some time now I'm sure this is the problem. If they can only hold the attention of new players for a season or two then eventually the game will die same as championship manager and other fantasy football games imo.

Fair point. I am aware of the links between FFS and FPL. However, I would rather enjoy a larger focus on this in the end of the season, instead of halfway through. Seeing that many of the arguments might change or lose value in five months I do not see the need of doing it in December. The time of year when most FPL players are reading articles and comments even more, and are hoping for juicy and reflective articles on players and teams.

I believe the game is evolving - or to be more accurate the players are evolving. I don't believe that there should be any changes to rule or game structure to combat this - it should be allowed to happen.

We all have our different ideas of how we would like the game to change, for example I didn't qualify for the cup this season which made me think maybe they should change it so the top 1m overall ranks automatically qualify at the end of GW17 and then the rest are based on performance in that week (similar to how the prem and. Championship do now). But that doesn't mean the game doesn't work well already as it is, think we all need to accept that it does change and we need to change with it. At the end if the day, it's just a game (even if it doesn't always seem that way), and is meant to be fun however we play.

      Well said that man.

That said hasn't prove changes and value always been part of the game, I don't get why this is now a big deal?

I've not changed the way I play as I've always been aggressive, no skin off my nose and we've always had early risers and 0.3 risers in a week. Always.

In fact I don't think there have been as many price rises this season as in others, my team value is normally way higher than it currently is.

Basically, a load of hot air.

Last year it was blaming casuals and then when people didn't get the points they were expecting in the DGWs it was blame the chips.

More people do seem to be using this site from what I can see from my ML so it's not as easy for people to just copy trends on here and walk their MLs.

Just need to accept each year is slightly different. This year there are more big priced players performing and there aren't any obvious bargains like last year. Personally I've enjoyed this season as fitting players in and gambling on early transfers has been fun rather than worrying about some FFS template.

For a good few years all it seemed you had to do to get a top 10k rank was frequent this site or one similar. You would then simply follow the template and sail away with your ML's. It's not that easy now, with far more people using these sites.

Honestly believe that it's peoples lack of easy success that is leading to these disgruntled comments. The game is allowed to change. Change with it or pack in. A few k of ardent players leaving from FFS,, will not make a jot of difference in the wider scheme of things. The game is flourishing with or without FFS, over 4mil+ players, and increasing year on year.

Well ask a stupid question, get a stupid reply.

You've been posting lhere ong enough to know when line ups come out. And I am fully aware the Liverpool line up is often 'leaked' buts its a quiet all over and still many hours before kick off as its a late game.

I keep seeing stuff on here about Chris Brunt being a great option (whether OOP or back in defence), am I missing something here? His scores since coming back into the squad are:
    1, 1, 0, 1, 7, 2, 14, 1, 10, 0, 2
Bringing in a total of 1 clean sheet, 1 goal, 3 assists, 13 goals conceded, over 11 matches (the first two admittedly just looking like short run-arounds).
And for 0.1m more, Winston Reid (of leaky west ham defence) over his last 11 games on the pitch has 61points compared to Brunt's 39 (including 3 goals and 4 assists).

There's very likely the most boring stat attack of the day haha 😉 Make of that what you will!

He's only £5m though - cheap enough that you don't have to play him every week.

      I've played him for - 7, 14, 10, 0 since owning. Benched the rest.

Plus there's been some tough fixtures there - United and City at home. A lot of away fixtures too.

Home fixtures are about to get very good and the away ones (except Spurs) aren't too bad either.

true. Owning him looks bright long term. Plus he is on set pieces and occasionally plays further up the pitch

Yeah true, I did think that 11 fixtures would be a decent comparison between the two though - West Ham must had a few stinkers in that amount of time too right?

How did you choose which games to play/rest him for? Got a rotation going or something like that? Nice hauls there!

Team for those with low TVs (around 100m):

    Grant - Hennessey
    Chambers - Jones - Ake - Mee - Evans
Sanchez - Lallana - De Roon - Sterling - Eriksen
    Ibra - Costa - Rondon

What to do? I plan to play 3-5-2 for the foreseeable, so Can and Pickford look the key issues.

      Pick Grant
      Alonso Brunt Cedric Ward Amat
      Sanch Haz Siggy Erik Can
      Ibra Costa Anichebe
      2FT, £0.3m bank

      A) Cedric & Can > Chambers & Philips (allows Pick > Randolph next GW)
      B) Cedric & Can > Nyom & Philips (risk of AFCON but allows Pick>Valdes)
      C) Siggy & Can > Cabaye & Philips (allows Pick > Heaton next GW)
      D) any other suggestion
