The Stock Check – Gameweek 20 – Wednesday

Dele Alli scores twice for the third successive Gameweek as Spurs extinguish Chelsea’s 13-match winning streak. Christian Eriksen supplies both assists as Eden Hazard’s form on the road continues to cause concern.

On the Rise

Dele Alli
It’s seven goals in the last four Gameweeks for the Spurs midfielder after scoring twice in the 2-0 win over Chelsea – his third successive brace.

Serving up points in six of his last eight outings, Alli has soared to third in the Fantasy Premier League midfield standings and has now scored 10 goals this term – matching his tally for the 2015/16 campaign.

Number one for transfers in this Gameweek with a massive 166,000+ new owners, Spurs’ upcoming schedule suggests that Alli could keep on delivering as the bandwagon picks up pace – the north London side host West Brom and Middlesbrough and travel to Sunderland in the next four.

Christian Eriksen
While Alli claimed top billing at the Lane, Eriksen kept his tally ticking over by supplying the assists for both the starlet’s goals.

The Dane’s 11-point haul – a fifth double-figure return in eight appearances – took him to fifth amongst FPL midfielders, highlighting his points potential ahead of those aforementioned fixtures.

Indeed, with the 10.9-priced Harry Kane failing to get amongst the goals, the prospect of doubling up on Eriksen (8.6) and Alli (8.4) may prove more appealing for those looking to invest in Mauricio Pochettino’s attack.

The Spurs Defence
With their first-choice defensive regulars all fit and free from suspension, Spurs chalked up an eighth clean sheet of the season last night – second only to Chelsea’s 11.

Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to roll out a 3-4-2-1 set-up bodes well for the prospects of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, who were both utilised as wing-backs against the Blues.

Indeed, Rose has now produced attacking or defensive returns in each of his last five appearances – an average of 5.1 points per match is second only to Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso (5.5) amongst defenders. He did, however, pick up an eigth yellow card and is now just two cautions from a two-match ban.

The return of Toby Alderweireld in recent matches also looks key. Spurs have chalked up six shutouts in 12 matches with the Belgian on board, compared to two clean sheets in eight without him.

With the schedule now in their favour, investment in Pochettino’s main men at both ends of the pitch looks likely.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s struggles on the road continued last night – he’s scored just twice away from Stamford Bridge this season.

More worryingly for his 34.7% owners, Hazard’s blank means he’s found the net only twice in his previous eight league outings – a far cry from the performances that served up seven goals and three assists in the first 11 Gameweeks.

Should he fail to pick up the points away to Leicester City next time out, Hazard – who also faces Arsenal and Liverpool in the next four Gameweeks – could see the exodus pick up pace as we look for better value in the premium bracket.

Harry Kane
With Alli and Eriksen bringing in the points again, the Spurs striker left his 13% ownership disappointed by failing to score at home for the third successive fixture.

Although Kane’s 16-point haul away to Watford last time out reminded us of his goal-getting talents, at a price of 10.9, there’s no doubt his appeal is lessened by the more budget-friendly alternatives in the Spurs midfield.

Given that the battle for premium-priced forwards has intensified recently, Kane needs to step up his consistency in order to prevent further sales as we look to Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Diego Costa up front.

Willian
A run of four straight starts came to an end last night as Pedro returned from suspension to oust the Brazilian from Antonio Conte’s first XI.

Willian’s brace against Stoke City in the previous Gameweek had suggested he would retain a starting berth at White Hart Lane, offering us a viable mid-price alternative to Hazard.

Yet a 26-minute cameo appearance off the bench confirmed that his acquisition clearly still comes with a major risk, with Conte still somewhat uncertain over that role on the right of the Chelsea front three.

Wenger regarding FA Cup : "I will rest Koscielny [vs. Preston], he came off with two problems in his thigh. Ospina will play. Sanchez I will rest certainly."

So missing the deadline this week by a wile day ended fairly badly this week. Didn't make my transfers, armband was left on Costa and Pieters was left last on the bench with Pieters coming on. Also lost my long term position at the top of my ML.

I missed it on GW1. Since then I set up the my team page in the first hour of the GW after the game updates before the fixtures even start. Gives me a rough idea where I may need strengthening after the GW ends and at least makes sure I have my captain choice somewhat right.

On Wildcard and this is doing my head. Please help me choose:

    A) Kane & Walker/Rose (Have Alli)

    B) Lukaku & Bellerin

ML Leader is 11 points ahead of me and he has Lukaku. If I get Lukaku we will have 4 or even 5 attackers same if he gets Alli for Mane which seems the obvious transfer for a lot of people.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

This is exactly how we overthink things here at FFS. I'm doing the same thing right now in getting Alli last night but regretting it and thinking I should have gone for Girhoo.

The idea of Walcott instead of Alli is ridiculous though: Oh, Theo is fast, and often plays in advance of the striker...but he is still injured!

Dele is banging them in for fun in a team that looks strong (just whooped the league leaders), and Dele is playing up top with Hurrikane.

Don't overthink it based upon what Theo CAN do...I'm fine with chasing points in a player & team that looks strong.
          Cheers.

Will he score 2 every game? No.
I wouldn't worry too much about goal conversion stats. He tends to time his runs in a way that gives himself good opportunities.

Oh sure, I'm not suggesting he's done for the season but I also don't think he's become 'essential' when he's still the same player most were ignoring for the first half of the season.

There is certainly lots of value at his price or cheaper. It is also an almost certainty that he won't maintain his output.
Conversion stats can be extremely misleading though. They throw a blanket over all chances, disregarding the quality of the attempt.
Better players find spaces in the right areas.

Agreed, but Alli's normal conversion rate based on that last 2 seasons is below 20%

If his shot accuracy and goal conversion were at his normal rates over the last 4 weeks he'd have 2 goals instead of 7 and people wouldn't be nearly so excited. I guess it's how much we consider real life form/confidence a factor. Will he carry this over until the next gameweek after a potential week off?

Fair points. Something else to factor in is Spurs form. They look far more fluid than earlier on in the season.
In addition, Alli was more advanced than Kane on a number of occasions last night.

Alli isn't essential if you have Eriksen. Otherwise, i'd trade him for any midfielder except Sanchez.

People giving way too much credit to players like Hazard and Aguero, missing out on tons of points due to the fear of a Kun or Eden explosion.

I'm selling Hazard after the Hull game no matter how he performs.

Ownership of other Tottenham assets doesn't come into my thinking (as it happens I have none). I try to weigh up each player independently. I'm not disagreeing with your other points though, Hazard hasn't done enough to justify me keeping and yet...

      Buy Ali because:
      - Let say he only scores once a week instead of twice, will you feel better to get him in as the conversion rate is more sustainable?
      - Best value in Spurs attack. Kane good value only if captain him. Eriksen is $0.2 more, and only an assist machine
      - If compare with others: Lallana plays deeper. Pedro/Sterling not that nail. Walcott not that nail + injury histroy. Pogba more expensive and less clinical
      - Coutinho and Firmino are the only competitors here

        - Scoring once a week isn't sustainable!
        - He probably is best value (or arguably Rose) but the others run him close. Happy to go without Spurs attack if other individual options are better though.
        - I think Walcott is still nailed although the injuries are a valid concern. I don't necessarily need anyone in this specific price bracket though.
        - Will definitely be interesting if Coutinho/Firmino start racking up the points again 🙂

        1. Kenneth Tang
          • 11 Years

          - How about once bi-weekly? I think this is still good enough, 19 goals a season 🙂
          - Spurs attacker is not a must, but both Alli and Eriksen is in top 10 of both the value/form table and the value/season table
          - $7 to $9 midfielders are not a must to own, but I find it very efficient (in terms of value) to have two slots reserved for this bracket this season. In such sense, Alli/Eriksen/Coutinho/Firmino/Lallana/Walcott/Pedro/Pogba are very ownable
          - Yes, Coutinho down to $8.2 is superb value. Now we know Klopp loves his team to keep scoring even after leading in a match. He recently also declared that he would love to see Coutinho keeps shooting a lot in any match. Plus Coutinho has improved his own game from last season, he is definitely undervalued by pricing him at $8 at start

I joined the Alli party in GW 14... did some dancing, had a few drinks, overall had a great time.

But then in GW 19 I heard about another party across the road. The Lallana party it was called, and the booze was cheaper! So I left the party and went there instead.

Unfortunately, the party was a bit rubbish and the only beer they sold was Carling. Meanwhile back at the Alli party, a fireworks show began and a free bar opened! How I curse my rash decision of leaving!

So now, with my tail in between my legs I will be slinking back to the Alli party with the hope that no one notices i'm gone... the fireworks have stopped and the bar has closed but rumours are more exciting events could be coming!

still time and I'm thinking it's time to consider 3-5-2 again.
Alli or Eriksen. Walcott & Coutinho probably back. Can have either Hazard or Sanchez alongside them. Fair bit of value in 5th mid options.
Defoe aside no great value in 3rd strikers.

Given his price I think he is a good bet. Easy to swap for Pogba/Walcott/Lallana/Coutinho etc if he doesn't perform. His fixtures are all right: WBA mci sun MID liv STK EVE cp SOU (6-7 out of 9 are favourable). Personally I dropped Mkhi for him but I think I would not drop the likes of Hazard or Sanchez at this point.

I have Eriksen, so a panic sideways transfer would be just a tad too embarrassing.

Probably but still jumped on can't miss the rises and chance that he could be like Ramsey and toure who royally buggered some of previous seasons by being stubborn! He's also playing pretty much OOP as a second striker and has the finishing ability to maintain a fairly high conversion rate if not his current rate

I hope so since I'm not buying him. It's unlikely he will keep going at this rate, but he will still do well I imagine.

No theyre not sustainable. Decent striker in decent team long term avg is just under 20%. However, he doesnt have to maintain it to be an option, he could regress and still be a decent option with u coming fixtures.

These days you have to protect yourself against damaging scor es from highly owned players whilst still attempting to spot the next bandwagon. So the real question perhaps is not Alli vs Walcott but Alli vs Hazard for example (and still get in Walcott for the potential)

Did Siggy => Alli before his 15 point haul last night (for no hit).

Just hope not too late having missed his 9/15/14/15 points burst over the last 4 GWs.......aargh - who'd have thunk it, particularly last night!!!

His goal conversion is similar to what happened with Ibra.

For the season Alli is just below 20% so still perhaps a little high but it could just be that the current high rate is evening out from previous in the season.

My team is almost exactly the same and I'm in a right pickle. Need to ship Anichebe this week as he's gonna drop, also want Phillips.

Thinking of being a bit crazy and doing Hazard + Anichebe > Phillips + Defoe.

You gonna jump on Alli bandwagon?

      Smooth

Took a gamble in ditching Hazard to free up some money and finally rid myself of Capoue. Phillips and Lallana in to give me an immediate return. Kept Gylfi too due to goals and assist imminent tables position.

      Rough

Benching my beloved Charlie Daniels....although I did play him the week before for his other festive double digit haul.

Overall a meh, not rough or smooth, festive fixture schedule...with a green arrow for the three fixtures overall. After some scores in the 20s during October I'll gladly take just above average.

good: buy and captain aguero that he has time to score. Almost sell Eriksen for Pogba. Ditch Siggy to acquire Phillips
bad: set to sell Kane, but 50-50 on buying Aguero or Giroud, wrong choice eventually

Didn't know Valdes was out but did Pick>Grant FT and had gut feel for Giroud so did -4 Carroll>Giroud. Those 2 helped me claw back a seemingly impossible 16pt cup tie deficit to win by 4pts sweating on a Costa blank up to final whistle of last game.

Smooth: Started so well on the Monday with Ibra (8), McAuley (8) and Phillips (9).

Rough: Bombed on Tuesday/Wednesday with Benteke (C) getting me 2pts and the likes of Joe Allen, Alonso, Hazard, Kane and Koscielny recording minimal scores. Benteke really hurt. Put a lot of time and research into that one... everything pointed to a decent score... subbed at half-time. Story of my season.

Rough: differential gamble on KdB (c) didn't pay off; benched Jones and played Alonso (but I always would have, so not too rough)

Rough: Started off with a rough with Aguero (c), Carroll and Nyom benched. Cedric starts but gets injured and at that point I'm looking at another sub 3 million gameweek. KdB failing to deliver means the christmas punt on him has failed and even with 50 points looking at red arrows all around.

Smooth: Aguero (c) coming on and scoring, Nyom clean sheet plus 2 bonus points despite West Brom conceding a goal, Ibra offside goal and Phillips' assist's add a certain respectability to the score.

        Rough:-
Selecting Defoe (13)over Negredo (2)for the first bench spot.

        Rough:-
Giving the captain's armband to Lallana(2).

        Smooth:-
Not as bad as the previous gw when van Dijk (-2) came in for Walker for a hit (-4), which led to Phillips (13) ending up as first sub.

      Smooth:

Brunt scored, Lovren assist, kept Mane for his goal, Sanchez (c) kept pace with Ibra and Aguero in the end, Ibra scored.

      Rough:

Did Eriksen > Pogba which didn't work out well and in hindsight should have taken out Mane due to ACON but was worried he'd get a haul v Sunderland, clearly Sunderland are a different team at home.

Injuries mounting up now with Evans, Benteke and Anichebe all doubts for next gameweek...I personally think Evans will be fine but not sure about the other 2 and with Mane off to ACON I need some serious surgery.

Luckily got 2 free transfers so will either just do 2 and get rid of Benteke and Mane or play a mini wildcard with 4 transfers.

Was 25k on Christmas Day and am now 54k somehow but it doesn't feel like anything has gone that badly.

Smooth— Captained Ibrahimovic, Phillips and McAuley combining, Sànchez and Rose bringing home a few points each. Got rid of Iheanacho and Adam Smith.

Rough— Brought in Pogba over Alli as I thought he was unlikely to do well with Chelsea and West Brom at home. Dropped 60,000 places in rank.

Rough - I improved my bench ahead of the festive fixtures expecting rotation, seemed a no-brainer to bench Daniels vs Arsenal (11 points) and Mee vs Man City (7 points). Of course all of my first xi played so no auto-subs!

Smooth - Eriksen ticking along nicely. Getting away with Aguero (c). Quietly pleased with Stanislas over the last 2 gameweeks.

My defence and GK scored 3 mere points.

I lost my lead in one of my mini leagues and now like 26 points behind (they scored 62 and 82 vs my humble 42)

Dropped from 9k to 20k overall.

I panicked and made 3 transfers for this gameweek for -8 when I have a big quarterfinal FSS match.

          Smooth;

Squeezed all but one point out of my team so can't complain with 42. Ibra(c), played Foster over Heaton, my only lost point was starting Evans over Can.

          Rough;

Theo no show, but had fit subs to cover it.

Like Jonty a meh week but over the three Xmas game weeks I've moved up 400k after a disastrous pre-Xmas run where I dropped 900k so I'll take that.

Siggy and Allen out to Lallana and Phillips in for a hit was a mixed bag - but hits need time to develop over a series of fixtures.

So not rough or smooth but happy with a small green and may finally be able to save a transfer as my team looks how I want it.

          4 transfers
          Smooth:
          Carroll(1), Hazard (2), Payet(1), Alonso(1) out for
          Aguero(7), Phillips(9), Lallana(1), Brunt(8)
Benteke(1) was my captaincy choice if I decided not to do this transfer spree, went Aguero(7) bc I did.

Net gain of 20 from transfers, 6 from captain and -8 for transfers meant I ended up on a +18.

Smooth: at least Aguero(c) didn't fail completely

Three weeks ago i was terrified of not owning Sanchez. So i did this.

          Eriksen + Alli -> Alexis + Jrod (-4)

FPL depression has then overtaken me.

          🙁

60 points that transfer cost me.

          ROUGH
My Achilles of a goalie combo snapped: Jaku and Pickford, with neither able to play at the weekend, forcing me to use my FT on Pickford to Valdes.

Valdes subsequently did not play and I missed out on the 'Boro cleanie as a result.

I also realised I didnt even qualify for the FPL Cup - a fantasy first for me

Rough: 33 points. 9 blanks, only returns from Sanchez (c) and Ibra.
7 players with 1 point: Heaton, Friend (came on after 33min), Evans (went off injured), Holebas, Payet, Lallana (who I transferred in for SIggy), Origi.
2 players with 2 points: (Costa, Hazard)

Quite literally my worst GW in 8 years of FPL (in terms of total percentage of top10k avg.)

That quote about the dark side of probability sums it up really.

Its the away form that worries me. Such poor returns away from Stamford Bridge.

But that I think makes him almost a perfect FPL prospect. Very good chance of hauls against minnows at home, very good chance of nothing away.

That's why I dumped him ahead of GWK 20 with two away games.

GWK 22 is when I'll look to possibly get him back in and captain him v HULL. Or maybe go with Pedro.

Must say though from a real life footballing point of view Hazard is a joy to watch still home or away.

            torn on this.
Can easily do Siggy to Alli or Eriksen.
It's whether I sell Hazard & De Roon to go 3-5-2 with Pedro & Coutinho coming in.

Sanchez (C) Hazard Lallana Eriksen Allen
        Costa Defoe (VC) Origi

        Allen > Stanislas
        Cedric > Gibson / Chambers

Cedric needs to get out of my team, done nothing for me the past 5 GWs since I got him in.

Obvious transfers or does anyone think something else needs fixing first? Looking to play 3-5-2 next 3 GWs as all 5 midfielders have good fixtures so Origi will be on the bench.

Feeling a little kneejerky this morning after Delis last two braces! Would you wild card the team below to team B?

        Current Team:

        Foster / Pickford
        Alonso / Lovren / McAuley / Pieters / Amat
        Sanchez / Pogba / Allen / DeRoon / Antonio
        Aguero / Ibra / Costa

        Wildcard Team:

        Grant / Jacku
        Ake / McAuley / Pieters / Holegate / 4.0
        Sanchez / Pogba / Pedro / Allí / DeRoon
        Aguero / Ibra / Costa

Pony defence, but nice midfield! Could downgrade Pedro to Philips and upgrade Holegate to Baines. Or just hold tight!

Any thoughts on that would be most welcome.
