The Stock Check – Gameweek 20 – Wednesday

Dele Alli scores twice for the third successive Gameweek as Spurs extinguish Chelsea’s 13-match winning streak. Christian Eriksen supplies both assists as Eden Hazard’s form on the road continues to cause concern.

On the Rise

Dele Alli
It’s seven goals in the last four Gameweeks for the Spurs midfielder after scoring twice in the 2-0 win over Chelsea – his third successive brace.

Serving up points in six of his last eight outings, Alli has soared to third in the Fantasy Premier League midfield standings and has now scored 10 goals this term – matching his tally for the 2015/16 campaign.

Number one for transfers in this Gameweek with a massive 166,000+ new owners, Spurs’ upcoming schedule suggests that Alli could keep on delivering as the bandwagon picks up pace – the north London side host West Brom and Middlesbrough and travel to Sunderland in the next four.

Christian Eriksen
While Alli claimed top billing at the Lane, Eriksen kept his tally ticking over by supplying the assists for both the starlet’s goals.

The Dane’s 11-point haul – a fifth double-figure return in eight appearances – took him to fifth amongst FPL midfielders, highlighting his points potential ahead of those aforementioned fixtures.

Indeed, with the 10.9-priced Harry Kane failing to get amongst the goals, the prospect of doubling up on Eriksen (8.6) and Alli (8.4) may prove more appealing for those looking to invest in Mauricio Pochettino’s attack.

The Spurs Defence
With their first-choice defensive regulars all fit and free from suspension, Spurs chalked up an eighth clean sheet of the season last night – second only to Chelsea’s 11.

Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to roll out a 3-4-2-1 set-up bodes well for the prospects of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, who were both utilised as wing-backs against the Blues.

Indeed, Rose has now produced attacking or defensive returns in each of his last five appearances – an average of 5.1 points per match is second only to Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso (5.5) amongst defenders. He did, however, pick up an eigth yellow card and is now just two cautions from a two-match ban.

The return of Toby Alderweireld in recent matches also looks key. Spurs have chalked up six shutouts in 12 matches with the Belgian on board, compared to two clean sheets in eight without him.

With the schedule now in their favour, investment in Pochettino’s main men at both ends of the pitch looks likely.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s struggles on the road continued last night – he’s scored just twice away from Stamford Bridge this season.

More worryingly for his 34.7% owners, Hazard’s blank means he’s found the net only twice in his previous eight league outings – a far cry from the performances that served up seven goals and three assists in the first 11 Gameweeks.

Should he fail to pick up the points away to Leicester City next time out, Hazard – who also faces Arsenal and Liverpool in the next four Gameweeks – could see the exodus pick up pace as we look for better value in the premium bracket.

Harry Kane
With Alli and Eriksen bringing in the points again, the Spurs striker left his 13% ownership disappointed by failing to score at home for the third successive fixture.

Although Kane’s 16-point haul away to Watford last time out reminded us of his goal-getting talents, at a price of 10.9, there’s no doubt his appeal is lessened by the more budget-friendly alternatives in the Spurs midfield.

Given that the battle for premium-priced forwards has intensified recently, Kane needs to step up his consistency in order to prevent further sales as we look to Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Diego Costa up front.

Willian
A run of four straight starts came to an end last night as Pedro returned from suspension to oust the Brazilian from Antonio Conte’s first XI.

Willian’s brace against Stoke City in the previous Gameweek had suggested he would retain a starting berth at White Hart Lane, offering us a viable mid-price alternative to Hazard.

Yet a 26-minute cameo appearance off the bench confirmed that his acquisition clearly still comes with a major risk, with Conte still somewhat uncertain over that role on the right of the Chelsea front three.

    I am thinking of bringing Hazard in for KDB before next game week, hoping Hazard drops .2 by then. Hazard is a differential in all my leagues and I think he can be explosive, gets bonus points, on pens and some FK. Am I crazy for bringing him in? Other option would be Lukaku in for Anichebe and a midfielder up to 6mil other than Phillips and Allen. Thoughts?

      Might happen. My money's on a 0.1 drop at the moment - I would expect after the initial Alli rise then things will slow down a bit. I would expect Alli to carry on and double-rise, though.

    Not sure what transfers to make this week, any of these options worth a hit?

    A) Alonso, Origi -> Baines, Defoe (-4)

    B) Alonso, Lallana -> Baines, Alli (-4)

    C) Hazard, Origi -> Alli, Defoe (-4)

    D) Alonso, Lallana, Origi -> Ake, Alli, Defoe (-8)

      C) seems the only semi-reasonable one in my opinion. Can't afford Giroud over Defoe?

    Mcauley, Rose, Smith, Williams, Amat;
    Lallana, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Hazard, Fletcher;
    Ibra, Costa, Benteke. 1FT, 0.7 ITB.
    My plan1):Benteke -> Giroud and Sigurdssin -> Antonio?

  6. Sanchez and Koscielny to get FA Cup rest
    Arteta
    • 8 Years
    7 years, 3 months ago

    Arsène Wenger:

    - on the FA cup
    It is a big priority for us. We have shown historically that we care about it, and it is a massive competition for everybody. To win the FA Cup is always a target each year. We know as well that after a congested Christmas period that the third round is always a tricky game.

    - on the squad he will take
    We will play with 90 per cent of the squad, I will rest Koscielny because he came off with fatigue, of course Ospina will play, maybe Alexis I will rest certainly, but the rest will play.

    - on whether he knows his best starting XI
    Yes, I know it 90 per cent but it’s good to be open as well. When you have a big squad there is a competition there and when there is a competition there it makes it uncertain. You have to use the players who are in the best form at the right moment so I think it’s normal and it’s part of the competition between the players. If they know that no matter how well they perform, they have no chance to play, they give up.

    - on whether Danny would’ve started up front this season if he had been fit
    Yes, it could have happened. That’s the coincidence sometimes of the availability and injuries and it’s true. Danny and Alexis are similar types of players, in the fact that they both love to play on the left. But they can both play through the middle and there is always an uncertainty on where their best position is.

          Exactly. FPL managers sometimes forget that Wenger and his counterparts are trying to win games, not gain fantasy points for specific players. 😕

          Sanchez likes playing LW and does a great job for Arsenal there. It's just that when he's playing LW I don't want him in my fantasy team. Which is my problem, not Wenger's.

      Wenger's comments the other week were interpreted as meaning Giroud would definitely start the next match, and he didn't, so his comments should always be taken with caution.

      I did the same. I would have been holding for the Hull game but in fairness Alli could get more points over the next two than Haz even with Haz playing Hull, so what's the point of hanging onto him? Chelsea have a good run of fixtures coming up in a few weeks, that's the time to re-assess and see if he's worth bringing back

        RMT (not a paragon of truth, granted, but still a fair guide) has Hazard to outscore Alli pretty comfortably (to the tune of 9 pts) over the next 6 weeks. It's certainly helped in chilling my beans over the move - and especially for a hit.

          Thing is though, I don't expect RMT expected Alli to score two against Chelsea, so you have to take it with a pinch of salt 🙂

            • 14 Years
            7 years, 3 months ago

            RMT on a single week sample has always been hit-and-miss, though - it's when you go over a longer period of time that the averages do tend to make it look quite accurate. I wouldn't rely on it completely but it would be foolish to completely dismiss it also.

              Fair enough, I'm not completely sold on the fact that I've ditched Haz, as last time I did that he started scoring again immediately after, but I can't ignore the form of Alli and Spurs so have taken a risk 🙂

        Alli wont continue to score 2 each game, and now people expect him todo so. Football is about details, and things go back and forth. If you have good players, like Hazard, I believe that sticking by him will benefit you in the long run. It seems like its one bad game, and its sell, and one good game everyone buys.

      The Giroud pick is brave but I think it's a good gamble for 3 games. It's a risk on gametime but the potential upside is pretty high. If I were set up for 3-4-3 I'd probably do that as well.

          Absolutely correct. But will he continue to do that?

          I suspect that Sanchez will play #9 in the tougher games at least. And maybe in some others too. That's why I'm holding. But I'm watchful because if Giroud becomes a fixture in the team then Sanchez is gone for me.

          If you take Giroud now you are betting that he starts the next 3 (or minimum 2 of 3). I think that's a fair bet with a big potential upside but not certain either.

          Positional changes at Arsenal always have to be watched like a hawk because they often have a big effect for FPL purposes.

    Look at Liverpool assets for GW22 (SWA) - where can I possibly invest?

    Heaton - Pickford
    Baines - Valencia - Brunt - Friend - Amat
    Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Phillips - Capoue

    Used wildcard but thinking about 1 more move ... pick up Baines for Van Dijk? Fixtures look good and would give me .2 ITB for future transfers. Any thoughts?

    Some fairly lax management (as well as injury and suspension) over Christmas has left me with a fairly shoddy team. Any thoughts on how to fix it? I know I need to get rid of Stones... he's been an albatross since Week 1. Asterisks are those I want out.

    Grant / Pickford*
    Evans / Holebas* / Amat* / Keane / Stones*
    Lallana / Alli / Sigurdsson* / Capoue / Hazard
    Aguero / Ibrahimovic / Rondon*

    0.4m in the bank and only 1 FT. Thinking Stones > P.Jones despite the tricky fixture.

    So I can sell either Hazard or Sigurdsson for Alli, what do you think? Money is no issue. Thing is, I'm not convinced he'll outscore either of them over the next couple or so, I'd only be doing it for team value mostly.

      If you are only doing it for value rather than points then don't do it.

    Bench two:

    A) Friend (wat)
    B) Capoue (MID)
    C) Baines (MCI)
    D) Valencia (LIV)
    E) Brunt (tot)
    F) Phillips (tot)

    I'm thinking A&B, but the West Brom boys seems set for probable 2 pointers...

      B for sure. Bench fodder is all Capoue has been since playing deep.

      Then it's a toss up between A & E for me. If Brunt is playing in an attacking role then he's as good as a midfielder so I'd play him over Friend.

      Between Jones and Philips. Brom go uber defensive against bigger teams but Philips is on corners and Spurs do concede the odd goal. Having said that, don't recall Spurs being weak at defending set pieces and so I fancy Philips' output to be minimal.

      I'll play Jones.

      50-50 between jones and phillips but would say jones as phillips looks to have the bigger upside.
      the tottenham defence is incredible, yeah i said incredible, 5 goals conceded in open play from 20 games, but phillips is on a lot of those non open play deliveries.

    Anyone else not liking the shape of their team? I'm comfortable with the players and for the most part my team is good BUT I just don't like where my money is.

    GK = 9.3
    DEF = 25.3
    MID = 37.4
    FOR = 28.7

    For me too much invested in both Defense and attack is meaning my midfield is relatively week.

    Interestingly although I have a team value of 103.0m, if I were to sell all my players I've only got 100.7m to play with. Having low team value and not paying attention properly at the start of the season is hurting my team now.

    Sorry folks, may do this a few times to get more responses and as and when I think of a few more transfers.

    Heaton
    Brunt Valencia Smith
    Mane Firmino Alli Siggy
    Ibra Kane Defoe

    Jaku Capoo Williams Nyom

    2FT 0.1 itb

    A) Mane + Ibra to Sanchez + Giroud
    B) Mane + Siggy to Sanchez + De Roon
    C) Mane + Siggy to Ozil + Pedro/Antonio
    D) Mane + Ibra + Siggy to Sanchez + Pogba + Gray/Rondon/Negredo -4
    E) Mane + Siggy + Capoo to Pedro + Antonio + Wally -4
    F) Mane + Siggy + Williams to Wally + Pedro/Antonio + Rose -4

        Unfortunately, no. Don't want Stanislas also. Too short term I feel. Cheap mids for short term is another transfer or a -4 waiting to happen.

      Don't like either, tbh, and I'm looking in the same price range. I'm thinking I either want to go cheaper (barnes? crouch?) and use the savings elsewhere, or find some money elsewhere to get somone better than gray or wilson.

      Wait until the cup games, Klopp might give away something on Sturridge, if he is out until after the Swansea game, keep Origi then. If not, I'm planning to sell as well, but also not sure to who yet
