The Watchlist Updated – The Midfield

After taking a detailed look at the latest movements among the goalkeepers and defenders in our Watchlist rankings over the past few days, we now consider the options in midfield.

The Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

The big movers in our latest update are the in-form Tottenham Hotspur duo Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen has averaged an impressive 9.25 points per game (ppg) over the last eight Gameweeks, while Alli has spiked more recently, serving up 13.25 ppg over the previous four.

The Dane’s consistency over a longer period gives him the slightest of edges for the time being, as do his set-piece duties, although Alli looks irrepressible at the moment, and offers the greater close-range goal threat.

There is also next to nothing to choose between the pair in terms of price now, with Alli having risen to 8.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this week, 0.1 less than his team-mate.

If you’re deployed a 3-5-2 set-up in Fantasy Premier League, it’s difficult to build a case for not acquiring both and therefore overlooking Harry Kane as an option in attack.

If you have the budget for just four high-priced midfield assets, the choice is more difficult, with Eriksen our preferred option for mid-to-long term output.

However, given Alli’s explosive form and Spurs’ confidence, even with four slots available, they still warrant major consideration as a pair.

Our members can get a more detailed breakdown of both players via our latest Versus article here.

Under pressure from the clamour for the Spurs double-act, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard are now barely clinging to the top spots in our rankings as our choice heavy-hitters.

Sanchez has failed to register a double-digit haul since his incredible 23-point effort against West Ham United in Gameweek 14, which has certainly raised questions on his current standing.

His drop off in production has coincided with the return of Olivier Giroud to the Gunners starting XI, seeing the former Barcelona player forced back onto the left wing.

While the underlying statistics remain impressive, his 36.5% FPL ownership will need to see that translates into more substantial point hauls in favourable match-ups against Swansea City, Burnley, Watford and Hull City in the next five.

Hazard has also been struggling of late, managing just one double-figure score in his last nine appearances.

Matches against Leicester City and Hull City in the short-term appear ideal to turn things around, but the Belgian does look very vulnerable, with the Spurs duo, along with a returning Philippe Coutinho, all offering strong alternatives at a cheaper price.

We’re sticking with Adam Lallana as our favoured Liverpool option until we see Coutinho back in action, though, with the England international registering an impressive four goals and two assists in his last six outings.

Available at 7.7 in FPL, Lallana still offers fantastic value, although Coutinho – who is now down to 8.2 and back in full training – looks poised for a return to our radars if he can hit the ground running following his ankle injury.

Two budget midfielders in West Bromwich Albion’s Matt Phillips and Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas both enjoy significant rises to around halfway up our ladder.

Philips has totalled four goals and seven assists over his last 10 appearances and has only blanked in two matches over that period, against Chelsea and Man United.

With the Baggies upcoming schedule very favourable following the Gameweek 21 trip to White Hart Lane (SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU), the 5.7-priced Phillips looks certain to see 16.9% ownership continue to rise at a rapid rate.

While Stanislas hasn’t reached those levels in recent times, the Bournemouth midfielder did register two double-digit hauls earlier in the season, and has produced assists in each of his last two matches following a spell on the sidelines through injury.

The Cherries face a very enticing run of fixtures (hul, WAT, CPL) in the short term, so Stanislas, who only sets us back 5.1 in FPL, is another viable budget option for us to consider.

Hull City’s Robert Snodgrass also makes a strong case for consideration in the cut-price category and enjoys a slight bump up our standings, having returned to form to register 20 points over the last two Gameweeks.

However, the Tigers face a very difficult upcoming schedule (che, mun, LIV, ars) following the home clash against Bournemouth in Gameweek 21, so there’s every chance the 132,000+ FPL bosses who have drafted the Scot in this week may have to show patience.

Heading in the opposite direction are mid-price options Theo Walcott and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Walcott has missed Arsenal’s last three matches with a calf injury, but with Arsene Wenger stating the wide man is close to a comeback, he may be fit to return for the Gunners trip to Swansea in Gameweek 21.

The landscape of the Arsenal attack has changed since Walcott picked up his injury, though, with Giroud now leading the line.

That puts a bit of a squeeze on the attacking midfield positions, then, with Alex Iwobi, Lucas Perez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey all capable of playing in Walcott’s usual position on the right wing.

Walcott’s form so far this season, having scored eight goals and registered three assists suggests the Gunners boss will find a spot for him in the starting XI more often than not, though.

Sigurdsson earned plenty of investment heading into the festive period ahead of a hugely inviting schedule. However, the Swansea City midfielder has delivered just a single assist in his last five matches.

While he will be integral to any hopes of survival under new manager Paul Clement, Sigurdsson will have to overcome testing fixtures to produce (ARS, liv, SOT, mci, LEI, che).

In a five-man midfield, there is perhaps room to wait on Clement’s impact before selling on. In a four-man set-up, it’s far more difficult to show that level of patience given the options available elsewhere.

Now the designated penalty taker for Manchester City, Yaya Toure has earned a further revival in our reckoning. With Kevin De Bruyne struggling to justify his lofty price tag and Raheem Sterling showing promise without returns, Toure has now edged his way into our affections.

Priced at just 7.3 and with a paltry 3.6% FPL ownership, it’s a close call with Sterling with the spot-kicks currently weighting the argument in favour of the Ivorian. A burst of form from Sterling would undoubtedly re-address matters, however.

Bit harsh of Pulis to say Berahino isn't fit enough to play for the first team when he managed to play 900 minutes for the U23s....

From the little I gathered in the past 1.5 seasons, I think he also treated WBA shabbily - after getting called up I believe his head grew to approximately Berbinho's Forehead's size.

So basically he and WBA deserve each other ...

Would I be better off getting rid of Hazard (lei) for Sanchez (swa) and potentially captaining him, or getting rid of Pieters (sun) for Daniels (hul)/Rose (WBA)?

Defence for this week currently is: Alonso (lei), Pieters (sun), Gibson (wat)

    Thanks 🙂

Of course he is. He's scored 30 points in the last 3 games and has swa, BUR, WAT, che, HUL up next.

If you want a fire and forget option for the season then no, perhaps not, but we have transfers.

      1) #FriendGate !!! Is the clean sheet rule unfair? Is a part clean sheet bonus needed (which works well in other fantasy football games)?

Friend played 57 minutes for a team that didn't concede = 1 point.

Nyom played 61 minutes in a game were West Brom conceded = 8 points. Unlike his teammates, Nyom got a bonus for a fictitious clean sheet, which skewed the BAPS much more in his favour.

      2) Unlike last season, can Mark go Aguero-less without being laughed at?

      3) Have Ake owners lost a Hull player or gained a cheap Chelsea defender?

      4) What have you learned from the fist half of the season? What mistakes do you need to avoid repeating in the second half of the season?

      5) With Liverpool's fixture congestion, should all Liverpool players (even the returning Coutinho) be avoided?

The clean sheet wasn't fictitious - you can't honestly suggest he should be punished for goals conceded whilst he wasn't on the pitch?!

The thing is, it's been like this for as long as I can remember yet folk have kicked off like it's a new ruling.

We can certainly discuss it but I'll be somewhat frustrated because the reaction seemed very extreme on something that we've known was is in place for seasons upon season.

Part clean sheets work really well on Telegraph Fantasy Football. Would be great to get Jonty's, Granville's and your opinion on this. I already know what Andy thinks - he just doesn't like change 😉

Don't the Telegraph rules punish a defender for goals conceded even when they're not on the pitch? In other words Nyom who played more than an hour and didn't concede any goals would have got no points because his team mates conceded before he came on whereas Friend who played less than an hour would have got points? That's clearly less fair.

What about 4 points for 60 minutes played and 2 points for 30 minutes played.

I definitely think it is worthy of a debate and a statesman-like answer.

Why stop there though? Then you'd complain that a player getting 28 minutes gets nothing. 3 points for 45 minutes, 1 point for 15 minutes...?

There have to be cut off points and there will always be rare incidents of players narrowly missing them. It feels like change for change's sake.

My statesman like response is that it's not justified. 🙂

Part of the skill is picking which teams will keep cleanies. In the case of friend you'd be correct and get punished in nyom. Wrong and rewarded. It is a lot down to luck but the elements that are skill is why there's debate at all!

It's not just because I have Friend. It's simply about fairness.

I think we need to move away from the mentality that the rules are gospel and set in stone. They can always be improved to make the game better.

Like when the bonus points system was changed to make outstanding goalkeeping performances count more. That change came about after a backlash when Pantilimon played incredibly well against Arsenal and got no bonus.

Don't think anyone is suggesting the rules can never change - there are frequent discussions about rule changes and from time to time they happen. The overwhelming opinion is that the clean sheet rule is fair though.

He got the clean sheet because while he was on the pitch he helped his side not conceade a goal. He can't be punished from his team mates actions in letting in a goal before he was involved in play. Clean sheets are awarded to players who don't conceade not to a team that doesn't conceade. Just like of Friend had started that match and came off on 70mins with a clean sheet in the bag you wouldn't then be complaint about his points if Middlesbrough then concealed in the 75min.

Exactly. Points should be awarded for individual performances. Nyom and Friend both kept clean sheets during their appearances, Nyom played over an hour so gets the points.

If there's any discussion about this it should simply be about whether we think changes to the clean sheet points system could be made.

As for what happened the rules are there and like you say have been like this for ages.

In terms of Friend there was no clean sheet - there's no discussion about that, it's in the rules.

Nyom got a clean sheet for playing 60 minutes, exactly the same as someone who plays 0-60 and then comes off. No difference.

Don't worry - no plans to put that on the agenda when there's 3-5-2, Aguero, Giroud, Hazard and some awesome value defenders and midfielders to talk about.

As Mark said, there was a big reaction on Twitter to what happened with Friend/Nyom. Plus there has been a big reaction on here to my question. Therefore should the scoutcast not at least look at this?

I'm not saying I'm right. I just think it is ripe for a debate.

A big reaction on Twitter from casuals who don't read the rules of the game. This new FPL Twitter page is doing more bad than good imo as the masses can influence some key decisions such as assists getting awarded etc.

Surely the fact that folk didn't understand or even knew that rule highlights that the Twitter account is doing a job. Understandably, FPL want all that play to the game to know the rules, even if they don't agree with them. Better to get these things out there than to sneak them by folk who remain in the dark.

I was shocked that so many folk were surprised when I've been playing the game knowing that for over ten years.

Makes you realise just how much of playing FPL is still unclear to some.

Rules change from season to season, I get that but there in place at the start of each season. This rule has been in place since...forever.
What I find exasperating is every season on FFS we see new players / posters asking all the questions under the sun about how this game works and then suddenly we have one of these little quirks of the rules that suddenly causes outrage.
Why? We all have the same information, it's there to be read and yes sometimes the rules work against you by the mearest deflection or 2 minutes not played, that's the rules set out.
FPL rules - not Sky or Telegraph or the Sun - FPL rules. The game we're all on here discussing, aggravating over and being spoon fed information over so you can gloat in ML's when your top.
                        Rant over.

I'm not saying we should spend time on this but I'm saying IF we do then it's ONLY about whether we think there's changes that need to be made NOT that Nyom or Friend should have received any more or less points.

Personally think this is a discussion for later in the season towards the end. It's only coming up because of a couple of incidents in the same weekend, it's VERY rare that something like this happens.

I totally agree with this. The rules are very exact and there's no room for misinterpretation. It hurts when we lose and feels excellent when we are on the right side of luck.

        1. apart from Defoe there's a lack of 3rd strikers. Plenty of midfielders contributing. Is now the time for 3-5-2? Or do you have to pile money into a front 3?

        2. Merits of doubling up on midfielders e.g Eriksen & Alli, Coutinho & Lallana, Sanchez & Walcott

        1. Toure The Route
          • 7 Years

There was a heavy lack of third strikers before this.
seems like the time for 3-4-3 rather. To actually pile money into a Giru-Defoe-Lukaku as a costly third striker, Benteke needs just two games to get into form himself as does Rondon from a bandwagon
Not owning one of those 3 strikers atleast seems uncomfortable

Disagree. Earlier in the season there was a lack of striker options. Now there are too many. A lot more good options up front now with less in midfield also.

was really referring to the cost options of 3rd strikers & the number of strong midfielders in their price bracket.
Are there many 3rd choice strikers under 8.5m that are more viable than all the mids on offer? Defoe yes.
Do you take Phillip/Snodgrass as a 5th mid over Benteke/Rondon? Current form would seem to suggest it's worthy of discussion.

My thinking is get rid and see how he does during the tough fixtures and if I see an improvement will considered again when theres a turn in the fixtures. Just think £7.3 he isnt representing value.

It is hard to argue with managers dumping him his points returns have been far from inspiring of late but i will try anyway

A great player like Gylfi is fixture proof couple that with the fact he has all the set pieces and everything is played through him means that he will be more than lightly amongst the points if Swansea score

I also think we might see Swansea doing better under Paul Clement i think he will thrive as a manager if given the right chance

I know you should not let this happen as a fpl manager but i feel emotionally attached to Sigurosson as a player
I would find it very hard to part company with him because i can see the potential with him

I know what you mean I love him a dream player in FPL but think until Gw 25 Swanseas fixtures aren't good while Stanislas has great fixtures so willing to take a punt. If Siggy does well then no hesitation in putting him back in. If Clements can sort them out then Siggy could be a great pick from GW 25 onwards

Lallana worth investing in (with the difficult run of fixtures)?
Do we think Coutinho will be worth it, and what would he have to show us before we believe?

Ibra & Costa seem fairly nailed in my team and the template now.

So the question is do we invest in Giroud/Lukaku/Defoe as a third striker and go with 3-4-3 or Erikssen/Alli/Coutinho and all other mid priced premium mids and go with 3-5-2?

For me the answer is simple:

Giroud whilst he's in the team and fixtures are nice. Soon as he's dropped/stops scoring then 2 transfers to switch de roon & grioud > coutinho & barnes/crouch/anichebe.

Thoughts on the Liverpool midfield and whether the likes of Firmino and Coutinho should still be considered given other midfield options out there in this moment in time. Are they incorrectly being overlooked? The next five or six fixtures are one soft/one hard fixture one after the other.

With the rise of the 3-4-1-2 / 3-5-2 / 3-4-2-1 in the PL and generally very attaching full backs, can we now give real thought to 4-4-2, or 4-3-3 for our FPL formation? Effectively a 0-8-2, or 0-7-3 in some cases!

Flying full backs and wizard wing backs could free up funds for a powerful front 6.

Rose, Walker, Clyne, Alonso, Brunt, Daniels, Baines, Coleman, Bellerin, PvA, Valencia are just a few options capable of delivering great returns from the back and should outscore the likes of Phillips, Cabaye and Stanislas in the longer term.

Why aren't more people doing this? Is this a viable strategy for those with a lower team value?

I spent a lot of time looking at 442 and I think it's definitely an option. I decided against it in the end though but from a value perspective there's certainly an argument for it.

Brunt is the perfect example, but you have the likes of Baines, Coleman, Rose, Walker and Alonso playing some or all games as wing backs. Then you have Valencia, Clyne, Daniels etc who are very attack minded.

I have one "normal" defender in Jones, then the others OOP or close to OOP. I'd like to swap Jones to Valencia or double on Spurs with Walker, but don't have the £s at the moment.

For 6.0, or around 5.5 in Def, I feel you get much better value than for a 5.5 or 6.0 mid. The mids might have a purple patch, but won't be consistent like Alonso or Rose/Walker.

If you have two of Ibra/Costa/Kane/Aguero up top then you will always have a solid captain option, especially with Hazard/Sanchez in midfield.

I have a low TV and gone with this for the past few weeks and happy with results. Rose, Brunt, Alonso and Jones, with at least 2 firing most weeks.

TV is key to it and those with a low one should have a look into it. It's the sort of thing that is usually dismissed out of hand but like you I think there's a case for it.

The only defender currently outscoring Phillips and Stanislas in terms of points per game is Alonso, and he's more expensive.

3-5-2 with Phillips or Stanislas as 5th midfielder offers better value than 4-4-2 with 4 premium defenders, but 4-4-2 could be an occasional option when your 5th midfielder has a difficult fixture and your defenders all have more favourable ones.

... but although your defenders (apart from the Chelsea premium ones) are unlikely to outscore Phillips and Stanislas, they might possibly offer better value than some of the more expensive midfield and forward options if your budget is limited.

I've gone for using 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 formations depending how the gw fixtures best suit them. Thus I have gone for the best 7 to allow rotation within my squad and minimize transfers in the second half of the season. But will always make transfers depending on form and take enhance my team if needed.

For the next few GW's at least is it worth considering rotating Sanchez and Hazard based on their home and away form? or is this just pointless transfer wasting.

Are we being too sceptical on Kun. We only have a handful of Explosive players in the game... Ibra and Costa aren't explosive but consistent... Is it too dangerous to go without that explosive potential? He has punished people numerous times on here.. I'm actually terrified to go without him in my team but i know his money goes a long way.

If you own Sanchez is it nailed on you should captain him this GW?

Seems sensible with his away record and playing at Swansea.

If not - could be a great week for a slight gamble. Owner of Aguero could catch some ground.

Possibility of some games being called off this weekend with the heavy snow due? looks quite bad for Wales so Captain choice looks tricky if not captaining an Arsenal player.

I am considering doubling-up on Liverpool via Lallana & Coutinho for SWA and beyond. Their good/bad run lasts 9 games, then the final 9 are awesome. Does this kind of "investment" ever work?

Hazard or Costa? Get rid of who.
Does having Costa at 9.5 favors Costa or Hazard in a 352 is more essential for easy switch between rising players?

SUN, mid, STK, whu, BOU, CPL -- delicious fixtures!

Does Spurs win against Chelsea with Potch fielding a 3-5-2 show the way to other teams in how to combat the Blues? Are Chelsea defensive assets a busted flush if other sides follow Spurs lead? Or do you need Duracell bunnies like Rose and Walker to pull this off, and nobody else has the same assets?

Prefer Stanislas & Philips over Antonio.

Both Bournemouth & West Brom score a lot of goals against smaller teams when playing at home and both have very good fixtures for now.

West Ham are more happy with 1-0s right now.

Stoke City have made a formal bid to buy West Brom striker Saido Berahino, according to Sky sources.

There is so far no indication of the value of the Stoke bid, but we understand it is less than the £20m offer from Tottenham that was rejected in the summer of 2015. Stoke also had a similar bid rejected in the summer.

...and that's why there really is no price on Defoe. Say we got £15m for him. Who on earth would we sign that's anywhere near as good as him if likes of Beranhio going for £20m+.

haha, WBA can't expect to sell him for the same price when he's older now, and they haven't been playing him. Idiots.

Its been handled terribly by every1 invovled. Wba have devalued their asset by trying to make a point that they arent a feeder club, but until u get into europe human ambition will create situations like this so i don't think wba have stopped this happening again, but young ambitious players might avoid wba! In 6mths berahino still moves and his wages will be more than he ever got offered because hes a free agent! Cant see how wba think this is the way forward

              A) Yes, Deroon comes in, look lively v lei last game

                Valdes, Jaku
                Valenica, Brunt, Jones, Pieters, Kingsley
                Sanchez, Eriksen, Phillips, Stanislas, Allen
                Ibra, Kane, Anichebe
I have cash to bring in Costa or Lukaku for Anichebe. If I bring in Lukaku I can upgrade other areas of my team. Lukaku or Costa? Thoughts?

Other plan was to ditch Kane for Costa before Hull, and Bring Lukaku for Anichebe. And still have cash to upgrade other areas like Kingsley.

                  I shouldnt be considering Aguero--> Ibra for a -4, should i?

My front 3 is: Aguero Costa Giroud.

                  Also have Pogba.

I'd get in Lukaku instead of Ibra.

Not sure why Lukaku isn't being talked about more on here. He's getting back into form, amazing fixtures, nailed for 90 mins, ALWAYS gets 2 or 3 BAPs.

I agree, could be a great differential. However, united are simply a better side than Everton, Zlatan is more likely to recieve better service to take chances. Really don't rate Everton at the minute, if they start improving them i may consider Rom.

Boufal returning from Afcon is not good for me as a JRod owner!

I'll add him to the list of new doubts with Valdes Holebas Origi and Alonso (according to some on here), might as well wildcard if it goes on like this

                        Hello

Brought in Andy Carroll a few weeks back for the home games against Burnley and Hull ended up with 4 points!

Not happy with him, I can transfer him out for Callum Wilson where Bournemouth next 3 games are Hull (A) and home to Watford and Palace.

Only thing stopping me is West Ham are home to Palace this week who don't look any better in defence under Allardyce.

Stick with Carroll or transfer him out for Wilson?

                        Cheers.
