Scout Notes – EFL Cup – Tuesday

Zlatan misses out due to illness, but Manchester United don’t need him as they see off a spirited Hull City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie.

Manchester United 2 Hull 0

United closed in on a February trip to Wembley courtesy of goals from Juan Mata (7.2) and substitute Marouane Fellaini (5.8).

The Spaniard is a frequently chosen one by Mourinho these days and yet his good form – he’s scored or assisted for four consecutive matches – is not apparent in the 2.4% ownership figures.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (9.0) set Mata up before Fellaini probably put the tie out of Hull’s reach from a Matteo Darmian (5.0) assist.

Mourinho’s squad is sufficiently strong that he can sell Morgan Schneiderlin (4.6), leave Michael Carrick (4.3) on the bench and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) out of the squad altogether and still field a well-balanced side.

The Swede’s surprise absence was put down to illness, which, if not serious, was a timely one as United prepare for a highly significant match with Liverpool on Sunday.

His coach certainly seemed relaxed about it all – much to the relief of Ibrahimovic’s 43.3% ownership – when he spoke post-match.

“Zlatan is ill so I think no problem, I think he will be fine.”

Mourinho also gave the latest on Marcos Rojo (5.2) returning for the Liverpool clash.

“I don’t know [if Rojo will be fit]. Marcos has a muscular problem, not big. I’m not saying he’s not ready to play, I’m saying that I have my doubts.”

Marcus Rashford (6.4) replaced Ibrahimovic as the lone striker but failed to shine, leaving others to test the excellent Eldin Jakupovic (3.9) in the visitors’ goal.

The bargain basement keeper has remained in 19.0% of Fantasy squads despite seeing no league action since Gameweek 5. Under new boss Marco Silva he’s started the last two matches, although both have been cup ties.

If he is to return to the Fantasy radar, however, it will most likely be for save points alone. Much of Hull’s midfield is currently playing in an injury-hit defence that hasn’t kept a clean sheet in 18 Gameweeks and after a home match with Bournemouth at the weekend, the Tigers must face Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Silva was able to welcome back Harry Maguire to his backline but still has doubts over Michael Dawson (4.4) and Curtis Davies (4.9) ahead of the Cherries meeting. Elsewhere, midfielder Markus Henriksen (4.9) is almost certain to miss the Gameweek 21 meeting after he suffered a shoulder injury in Tuesday’s tie.

Two goals should be enough to take to the KCOM Stadium, allowing Mourinho to rotate ahead of the second leg, which falls between a Gameweek 22 trip to Stoke and the FA Cup fourth round tie with Wigan.

Silva will be hoping to have added to a desperately thin squad by then, with Everton striker Oumar Niasse (5.6) reportedly close to joining them on loan until the end of the season.

Essentially, the result means that United now have one foot in the final, which will take place on February 26 – or Gameweek 26, to you and me.

Should the Old Trafford outfit progress to the Wembley showdown, it is near-certain that they would then face a blank Gameweek 26 – this is all the more significant when you consider they are currently scheduled to face neighbours Manchester City in the league that weekend.

Clearly, such a scenario would have repercussions for those holding both Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero (12.8), forcing us to freshen up our three-man frontlines, with both Manchester sides then afforded a double Gameweek apiece somewhere down the line.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Darmian, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Fellaini 79), Rooney (Martial 59), Mkhitaryan (Lingard 71), Rashford.
Subs not used: Romero, Carrick, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, .

Hull City XI: Jakupovic, Huddlestone, Maguire, Robertson, Meyler, Mason, Clucas, Tymon (Weir 90+1), Snodgrass, Henriksen (Hernández 19), Diomande (Maloney 74).
Subs not used: Marshall, Bowen, Clackstone.

Selling before Hull game is just stupid, but after that... Baines or Brunt has great run of fixtures. I am keeping Ake. Great possible return at that price. My bet is that he will replace Cahill (who played in the cup).

Wrong thread, sorry for the repost.

So Ake back to CHE is a bit annoying as I have to ditch him before Holebas now.

    Foster/Pick
    Alonso - Holebas - *Ake - / Brunt / Amat
    Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Phillips / *Capoue
    Ibra - Costa - Negredo

    So I can do:

    A Ake to Rose or
B Ake & Capoue to Daniels & Stanislas for -4 and lose Negredo next GW with 3-5-2.

Should I just go simple A or is anything worth a hit guys?

    Thanks for the help.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Given the success that many at the top of our Hall of Fame have had with 3-5-2 who is going to make a switch to this formation?

And for those who have already used it, what advice would you give those who are considering following your lead?

To add to the discussion here are some notes I read out on last night's Scout cast looking at how midfielders are the dominant player for the majority of Premier League teams this campaign.

There are 12 teams where MIDFIELDERS are their highest FPL scorers. - Arsenal, Palace, Hull, Leicester, Liverpool, Man City (KDB and Sterling), Spurs (Alli and Eriksen), Stoke, Swansea, Watford, West Brom, West Ham

There are just five teams where FORWARDS are their highest FPL scorers -
Chelsea (Costa by 3pts), Everton, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Sunderland
There are two teams where DEFENDERS are their teams' highest FPL scorers

    Bournemouth - Daniels (88)
    Southampton - Van Dijk (72)

There is one team where a GOALKEEPER is a team's highest FPL scorer
    Goalkeepers

    Burnley Heaton (80)

Currently own (for this week only) Borini, Phillips, and Stanislas. Borini will probably go, so I just have to decide whether to get a decent or cheapie third striker.

        That was soooo 2016
I'm top 1k due to 352, but 343 is starting to look attractive now due to forwards looking attractive again - ibra and costa and then one of giroud, lukaku, kane, aguero

I think flexibility is important. Sticking with one formation with no plans to switch formation if and when require will probably backfire.

With variation in TVs, formation will vary and we should realise that some other formation might suit our team better as compared to other guy's team who has higher TV like playing 4 at back and so on...

I don't think it really matters if there are 5 teams with forwards as their highest scoring players or 16 teams, as long as there are at least 3 quality options the 3-4-3 remains viable. Simply I think Costa-Ibra-Giroud/Lukaku will outscore any of the 3-5-2 drafts I make... I'll be sticking with what's working for me 😀

I switched to 3-5-2 in GW3 or 4 I think as I felt my team looked like getting more points with that setup. Had a high OR rank early on but slipped to 382k now due to silly gut decisions instead of playing safe! haha Loving 3-5-2 on the whole though! Hoping to climb back up the ranks ASAP

Going to 352 earlier in the season coincided with a catastrophic drop in rank for me. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe I picked the wrong players, but I have absolutely zero interest in re-exploring it as an option.

Why do we need to play one of these formations? I find it strange on here that many go for bench fodder as they're 8th forward spot (Midfield/Attack, regardless of 3-4-3 or 3-5-2).

I like to have 8 forwards who I'd be comfortable picking most weeks, with the exception of maybe a poor fixture. This week for example I'm benching Rondon and playing Puncheon (He's a punt, not my smartest decision).

Why not have say a Rondon/Carroll and rotate with the Phillips/Zaha/Snodgrass's of the FPL world. Many like goalkeeper/defender rotation but when it comes to the front 8 people don't seem to be interested and it baffles me. Leaves you in a good situation when injuries inevitably occur and means for less points hits because of this throughout the season, I was able to bench Costa during his suspension and play my rotating mid/attack (Defoe/Capoue), to many Capoue may be just bench fodder and I've since got rid and upgraded, definitely worth having an 8th attacker that at least plays week in, week out?

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

I think everyone strives for 8 attackers who play week-in, week-out - it's just that many want their 8th attacker to be one they don't mind benching more often than not, rather than having to make a choice each week.

        1. greghammer95
          • 14 Years

Fair point, I like the choice though, normally its fairly easy with crappy fixtures coming around.

      2. DailyFootballPl

Having 6m on the bench is a complete waste of money. Instead of two average 6-7m.players you can have one 8m (ali/eriksen) and some fodder. Or difference between 4.5 defenders and an elite 6.5.

Having 4 defenders that can play is handy because they mostly score clean sheets at home so you try to play your premium defenders and the 3/4th defender with the better fixture. Doesn't work in the same way with attackers in the same way rotating for keepers is pointless as tou end up benching points more often than not.

Some prefer more options incase if injury but I prefer getting points first and if something bad happens I've scored enough points not to worry about a hit.

Had grabban upfront all season and chosee him for 4.3 instead of a 4.5 option because I would never play the 4.5 option anyway and would just go 4th/5th defender instead if needed which has happened once this season.

To help this strategy further, you have to play less punty players and go for security of starts obviously.

Well I intend playing 343 352 and 442 over the next 2 months my team is balanced all round so I have great options each week so I have around d 6 7 players I am happy to bench in certain games I don't think the formation is a big deal. Play the players who you think will score points regardless if the are defense midfiled or striker.

I don't think 3-5-2 itself is the magical formula, but more so the ability to not get stuck to 3-4-3 that has been helpful for many of us. And as many above have said, the formation needs to focus on where the strong performers will be in 2017.

Would be ironic if the herd on this site fell in love with 3-5-2 but the actual teams and players themselves didn't supply the talismen in the second half of the season.

Take a look at Liverpool for example -- as long as Sturridge is fit, their midfielders are no longer the finishers of their attack, and he is an unbelievable ball hog. Not sure if I would want any of their midfielders while he is playing, nor are their fixtures that great.

      • Tinzelbat

I don't look at it as a formation I look at it the teams likely to score points that gameweek. So for example if you have west brom away to chelsea and man u at home to burnley I'm dropping phillips every time and going 4 4 2. But then there is this week I have Ashley Barnes so my 352 will be 343. My point is formation is not an issue and sticking to one formation just seems silly there's no way someone wins the league by never changing formation all season.

I'm currently on 352 and am changing this weekend to 343 (hello Giroud)

But that's hardly the point: a switch from 343 to 352 will, worst case, cost a hit. 4 points. FOUR

Tis hardly the ruining a season - systems can easily be changed, and then refined to match form / fixtures and so on. Anything else is hugely overcomplicating the situation.

I think after a few GWs 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 might be irrelevant because we will be seeing plenty of blanks/double GWs and accordingly we need to set up our team. For example, if Liverpool have a double GW, perhaps we need to play an extra midfielder.

        In 3 gw's since going 3-5-2 I've moved rank from over 1m to 510k.
So many options in midfield, got Phillips for 5.4 who is much much better than any striker at that price.
For me unless you have the money to get in Giroud or Defoe as your 3rd striker 3-5-2 is the way to go.
With sanch and Haz as my big hitters and Phillips as my cheapy, with coutinho nearing a return I have the flexibility of getting him in for Lallana or Eriksen

I am starting starting Alonso and Ake (ahead of Baines and Brunt). No cameo risk imo. Conte usually don't change his defensive block, so if both start its great fixture. If one of those Baines comes into play. There are rumours Ake will start vs Lei. My bet is Cahill out as he is LCB or Azpi for Moses and Cahill in the middle. We will see.

        Choose on WC:

        A) Walker & Rose (Have Alli, Triple Spurs too many eggs in one basket?)

        B) Walker & Luiz

I prefer Walker over Rose because of the 8 yellows. After he serves his suspension I don't mind having Rose too.

Reading the previous article, although the Number 1 player has suggested to take fewer hits, I do believe that being decisive in jumping on a bandwagon quick is as important.
Currently I've made 34 transfers which is pretty high and I'm doing OK so far.

Bottom line is its a long season, some stages you get your calls right sometimes wrong, but making the decision based on what data you have gives you the best chance of beating your mates =)

Might even be argument for starting Diomande over Phillips. Risky but Bournemouth missing two of their first choice defenders.

Possibly. Diomande just doesn't score often enough :(. But I see where you're coming from.

              Thanks for the input!

How many players do you have from MUN, LEI, MCI and LIV currently plus any non-playing players? I have 5 in total. Need to bring this down to 2-3 over the next few weeks.

Assuming we have a MUN v LIV final in the Cup...
