Scout Notes

Scout Notes – EFL Cup – Tuesday

Zlatan misses out due to illness, but Manchester United don’t need him as they see off a spirited Hull City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie.

Manchester United 2 Hull 0

United closed in on a February trip to Wembley courtesy of goals from Juan Mata (7.2) and substitute Marouane Fellaini (5.8).

The Spaniard is a frequently chosen one by Mourinho these days and yet his good form – he’s scored or assisted for four consecutive matches – is not apparent in the 2.4% ownership figures.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (9.0) set Mata up before Fellaini probably put the tie out of Hull’s reach from a Matteo Darmian (5.0) assist.

Mourinho’s squad is sufficiently strong that he can sell Morgan Schneiderlin (4.6), leave Michael Carrick (4.3) on the bench and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) out of the squad altogether and still field a well-balanced side.

The Swede’s surprise absence was put down to illness, which, if not serious, was a timely one as United prepare for a highly significant match with Liverpool on Sunday.

His coach certainly seemed relaxed about it all – much to the relief of Ibrahimovic’s 43.3% ownership – when he spoke post-match.

“Zlatan is ill so I think no problem, I think he will be fine.”

Mourinho also gave the latest on Marcos Rojo (5.2) returning for the Liverpool clash.

“I don’t know [if Rojo will be fit]. Marcos has a muscular problem, not big. I’m not saying he’s not ready to play, I’m saying that I have my doubts.”

Marcus Rashford (6.4) replaced Ibrahimovic as the lone striker but failed to shine, leaving others to test the excellent Eldin Jakupovic (3.9) in the visitors’ goal.

The bargain basement keeper has remained in 19.0% of Fantasy squads despite seeing no league action since Gameweek 5. Under new boss Marco Silva he’s started the last two matches, although both have been cup ties.

If he is to return to the Fantasy radar, however, it will most likely be for save points alone. Much of Hull’s midfield is currently playing in an injury-hit defence that hasn’t kept a clean sheet in 18 Gameweeks and after a home match with Bournemouth at the weekend, the Tigers must face Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Silva was able to welcome back Harry Maguire to his backline but still has doubts over Michael Dawson (4.4) and Curtis Davies (4.9) ahead of the Cherries meeting. Elsewhere, midfielder Markus Henriksen (4.9) is almost certain to miss the Gameweek 21 meeting after he suffered a shoulder injury in Tuesday’s tie.

Two goals should be enough to take to the KCOM Stadium, allowing Mourinho to rotate ahead of the second leg, which falls between a Gameweek 22 trip to Stoke and the FA Cup fourth round tie with Wigan.

Silva will be hoping to have added to a desperately thin squad by then, with Everton striker Oumar Niasse (5.6) reportedly close to joining them on loan until the end of the season.

Essentially, the result means that United now have one foot in the final, which will take place on February 26 – or Gameweek 26, to you and me.

Should the Old Trafford outfit progress to the Wembley showdown, it is near-certain that they would then face a blank Gameweek 26 – this is all the more significant when you consider they are currently scheduled to face neighbours Manchester City in the league that weekend.

Clearly, such a scenario would have repercussions for those holding both Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero (12.8), forcing us to freshen up our three-man frontlines, with both Manchester sides then afforded a double Gameweek apiece somewhere down the line.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Darmian, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Fellaini 79), Rooney (Martial 59), Mkhitaryan (Lingard 71), Rashford.
Subs not used: Romero, Carrick, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, .

Hull City XI: Jakupovic, Huddlestone, Maguire, Robertson, Meyler, Mason, Clucas, Tymon (Weir 90+1), Snodgrass, Henriksen (Hernández 19), Diomande (Maloney 74).
Subs not used: Marshall, Bowen, Clackstone.

Wait on Walcott news, but if he's fit:

      Siggy > Alli/Eriksen
      Origi > Barnes

Next week De Roon > Phillips

so guys, what is the best point in time to play Wildcard and Bench Boost, Triple Captain - should it be as follows:

    1. one gameweek prior to the DGW, play wildcard and assemble a squad all playing twice in the DGW (including bench)
    2. activate bench boost chip for DGW
    3. adjust squad to suit upcoming DGW (assuming two main ones, as per last season)
    4. play triple captain in second main DGW

    thoughts appreciated?

Absolutely not. You're a 4pt hit away from a reasonable team. Is that A Smith in your defence?

Chances of an Ake cameo if he doesn't start?

I'm benching Phillips, de Roon and Evans.

2%. Conte doesnt change defensive block during the game. But i would say he has like 20% chances to start. Due Cahill playing in the cup and Alonso doubt.

How many weeks in advance do you find out about DGW?

It's pretty nailed on to be GW34 and GW37 this season. And we'll probably have a decent idea of who's in the GW34 one around GW30.

I remember last season people were convinced there would be a dgw which would happen around gw 25-26 with less than a weeks notice

The authorities and FA need to give a few weeks notice I believe before a match can be re-arranged.

Yeah the PL messed up the fixtures last year and were very lucky not to get major sanctions from UEFA following having to rearrange games on CL nights. Hopefully they have sacked everyone in the fixtures department and got some competent people in this year - scrapping FACQF replays is a good start.

    Currently have:

    1FT

    Grant, Heaton
    Walker, Alonso, Fonte, Smith (Evans)
Sanchez (c), Allen, Sterling (Lallana, Phillips)
    Ibra, Costa, Negredo

    Thinking of being daring...

    Sanchez, Negredo => Alli, Giroud

Do I leave the team and get extra FT next week?

If Alonso is injured I can see Ake' being the replacement. Not as you would expect at LB.

Can see Azpilicueta shifting to LB and Ake' moving into central deffence.

If Ake' can nail down that spot he can be absolute gold!

Im going to hold on to him and see how Chelsea lineup!

So you think Azpi will play LWB. He won't.
So you think Chelsea will shift to 4 at the back after winning 13 games in a row with wingbacks. They won't.
So you think Ake will be ahead of Zouma to replace one of the current CBs. He won't be.

Yes. LWB. Played the majority of last season at LB.

No I don’t think they will change to 4 at the back, never said that, but they do currently play with 3 central defenders which Azpilicueta is a part of so I can see Ake' taking his role if he shifts to LWB.

Replace Zouma, definitely! Ake’, did you watch him against Arsenal and how he strolled though their midfield? Anyone would choose him over a player who has had virtually zero minutes this season.

Will have to see what happens if Alonso is injured but I feel that would be the best alternative.

I agree. They paid 12m to Fiorentina for Ake. He is doing great this season. He can replace Cahil too at LCB.
Bought him at 4.2 so holding, as possible prize would be huge if he starts.

    Best Ake replacement?

Either 5m max with Baines, or 4.4m max with Rose.

Ah, well I'd make it a priority to keep Rose. Not much else down in that price bracket. Did you read the Defenders Watchlist article the other day? Might be something that catches you eye from there.

Just play Barnes over Evans. Not sure why you're not already doing that.

How this wild card team looks (0£ ITB):

    Grant - Randolph
    Alonso - Baines - Brunt - Daniels - Amat
    Sanchez - Lallana - Alli - Phillips - Stanislas
    Zlatan - Costa - Lukaku

Any ideas guys yet? Alonso & Amat --> Jones & Chambers? And then Lallana --> Coutinho.

    Lukaku --> Giroud?

No point having Randolph. Jaku will do a similar job for 0.4m less. Also I prefer Love over Amat. More chance of minutes moving forward.

Midfield and forwards fine if you're happy to rotate phillips and stanislas. Personally I'd probably rather have De roon or similar for stanilas, allowing you to keep money ITB for Lallana > Cout, unless you just get cout now.

But Randolph playing Jaku not? then I can use rotation subject to fixtures..
