Scout Notes

Scout Notes – EFL Cup – Tuesday

Zlatan misses out due to illness, but Manchester United don’t need him as they see off a spirited Hull City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie.

Manchester United 2 Hull 0

United closed in on a February trip to Wembley courtesy of goals from Juan Mata (7.2) and substitute Marouane Fellaini (5.8).

The Spaniard is a frequently chosen one by Mourinho these days and yet his good form – he’s scored or assisted for four consecutive matches – is not apparent in the 2.4% ownership figures.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (9.0) set Mata up before Fellaini probably put the tie out of Hull’s reach from a Matteo Darmian (5.0) assist.

Mourinho’s squad is sufficiently strong that he can sell Morgan Schneiderlin (4.6), leave Michael Carrick (4.3) on the bench and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) out of the squad altogether and still field a well-balanced side.

The Swede’s surprise absence was put down to illness, which, if not serious, was a timely one as United prepare for a highly significant match with Liverpool on Sunday.

His coach certainly seemed relaxed about it all – much to the relief of Ibrahimovic’s 43.3% ownership – when he spoke post-match.

“Zlatan is ill so I think no problem, I think he will be fine.”

Mourinho also gave the latest on Marcos Rojo (5.2) returning for the Liverpool clash.

“I don’t know [if Rojo will be fit]. Marcos has a muscular problem, not big. I’m not saying he’s not ready to play, I’m saying that I have my doubts.”

Marcus Rashford (6.4) replaced Ibrahimovic as the lone striker but failed to shine, leaving others to test the excellent Eldin Jakupovic (3.9) in the visitors’ goal.

The bargain basement keeper has remained in 19.0% of Fantasy squads despite seeing no league action since Gameweek 5. Under new boss Marco Silva he’s started the last two matches, although both have been cup ties.

If he is to return to the Fantasy radar, however, it will most likely be for save points alone. Much of Hull’s midfield is currently playing in an injury-hit defence that hasn’t kept a clean sheet in 18 Gameweeks and after a home match with Bournemouth at the weekend, the Tigers must face Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Silva was able to welcome back Harry Maguire to his backline but still has doubts over Michael Dawson (4.4) and Curtis Davies (4.9) ahead of the Cherries meeting. Elsewhere, midfielder Markus Henriksen (4.9) is almost certain to miss the Gameweek 21 meeting after he suffered a shoulder injury in Tuesday’s tie.

Two goals should be enough to take to the KCOM Stadium, allowing Mourinho to rotate ahead of the second leg, which falls between a Gameweek 22 trip to Stoke and the FA Cup fourth round tie with Wigan.

Silva will be hoping to have added to a desperately thin squad by then, with Everton striker Oumar Niasse (5.6) reportedly close to joining them on loan until the end of the season.

Essentially, the result means that United now have one foot in the final, which will take place on February 26 – or Gameweek 26, to you and me.

Should the Old Trafford outfit progress to the Wembley showdown, it is near-certain that they would then face a blank Gameweek 26 – this is all the more significant when you consider they are currently scheduled to face neighbours Manchester City in the league that weekend.

Clearly, such a scenario would have repercussions for those holding both Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero (12.8), forcing us to freshen up our three-man frontlines, with both Manchester sides then afforded a double Gameweek apiece somewhere down the line.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Darmian, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Fellaini 79), Rooney (Martial 59), Mkhitaryan (Lingard 71), Rashford.
Subs not used: Romero, Carrick, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, .

Hull City XI: Jakupovic, Huddlestone, Maguire, Robertson, Meyler, Mason, Clucas, Tymon (Weir 90+1), Snodgrass, Henriksen (Hernández 19), Diomande (Maloney 74).
Subs not used: Marshall, Bowen, Clackstone.

    Heaton
    Ake, Holebas, Jones
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Phillips, Lallana, Hazard
    Ibra, Kun

    Pickford, Barnes, Evans, Amat

I was going to hold this week and despite the question marks over Ake, I'm slightly encouraged by the comments that Evans is hopeful to be back in contention.

What to do with this lot, 0ft and 0.7itb, don't mind taking a couple of hits as am 30 points clear in ML, my OR isn't great tho:

    Foster - Pickford*
    Jones - Alonso - Bellerin* - Ake* - Amat
Sanchez - Lallana - Phillips - Eriksen - De room
    Kane - Benteke* - Zlatan*

WC this week but not sure on what team? Any help appreciated 🙂

    A) Heaton - Grant
    McAuley - Baines - Rose - Daniels - Chambers
    Erickson - Stanislas - Lallana - Sanchez - Phillips
    Giroud - Costa - Defoe

    B) Heaton -Grant
    Jones - Baines - Rose - Daniels - Chambers
    Erickson - Stanislas - Lallana - Sanchez - Phillips
Ibra - Costa - Crouch (or striker under 5.9)

    C) Heaton - Jaku
(Jones or McAuley) - Daniels - Pieters - Chambers - Kelly
    Erickson - Stanislas - Snodgrass - Sanchez - Phillips
    Ibra - Costa - Lukaku

Personally I'm leaning towards A) but want a second opinion. Also not sure on who I should choose between Jones and McAuley?

Leaning towards B personally and would choose Mcauley over Jones anyday for his offensive threat alone. Brunt at only 0.1 more would be an even better option if you could afford it.

Don't you have one more defender?

I'd say wait a week to do it really, Baines isn't a doubt but has Man City (H), Brunt is also 75% like Holebas but from next week is the much better option, If Holebas starts he has the much better fixture than Brunt also.

To summarise, I'd actually save for this week and do Holebas to Brunt next.

Holebas missed the last fixture through 'sickness', flag won't be removed until he is passed fit which will probably be at the Watford press conference before the next game. The chances are that he'll be absolutely fine and you might as well keep him for at least one more game as it's a nice game and you might have problems elsewhere.

How? Arsenal aren't keeping their usual amount of clean sheets and Cech rarely gets save or bonus points. Heaton has the most bonus amongst keepers and can reach double-digit saves in one game. Plus the odd clean sheet at home.

Hard to say, but I'm guessing not. He still has a buffer of net transfers in from before the Chelsea news. Recent sales are probably dominated by folks of wildcard, which don't count and don't help that much to predict what non-wildcarders will do. There's been a new story about Alonso carrying an injury (http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/nathan-ake-recalled-chelsea-after-9596987). And he's a pretty cheap defender, the type who get stashed on the bench while managers deal with more pressing matters.

    Baines, Rose, Brunt, Chambers, Daniels

    Erickson, Stanislas, Lallana, Sanchez, Phillips

    Giroud, Defoe, Costa

    0.1 ITB, Any alterations needed?

Personally I'd just get Jaku as a 2nd keeper.

      No Chelsea defenders? That's crazy

would you get Azpi? Which defender would you take out for him? Could go Grant to Jaku and Rose to Azpi

You have great and well balanced squad. No Chelsea def needed. Rose Brunt Baines will cover all cs in coming gameweeks. You can buy one after Liverpool game. You can even downgrade one and upgrade Stan in 3 weeks time. Just an idea.

Tottenham can match Chelsea for clean sheets though

Drop daniels. You don't need five playing defenders, especially four over £5m.

Wouldn't be going without Ibra on WC. Ditch Stanislas > De Roon too and with Daniels ditching there's £2.5/£3m towards getting ibra.

Have you seen Bournemouth's fixtures and Daniel's form?

I wouldn't be ditching any Cherries with hull WAT CPL next.

I think that WC looks great.

Their defence will be shomewhat weaker though without Ake and Francis, though his attacking threat means he's still a good shout.

Fair enough, just don't see Daniels sustaining it.

He's bound to have bench points, but what I'd give to have options seeing as my bench reads pickford, de roon, amat, love 😳

Wild cards often present bench problems because they should be good.

Not keen on advising someone with a good wildcard to make it worse.

I agree here. Ibra is essential with pens, playing 90 every game and in form. Good moves suggested.

Very nice allround team, maybe a tad too much depth for my liking but could pay off

Seems strange we're criticizing him for having too much depth but it's the same point I had.

      Great team to rotate
Could downgrade a defender since you will not be benching your strikers for quite a while .

Origi to Giroud a sound move right?

And who's the best replacement 4.8M or less for Francis? Smith?

      Francis suspended.

A.Smith or Friend/Chambers (prefer latter if don't already own a boro def)

    Thoughts??

    A: Siggy ---> £8.2m (Lallana, Sterling, Stanislas)
    B: Siggy + Cedric ---> Pogba + Chambers (-4 hit)
    C: Save FT. Play Siggy

Giroud followed by Defoe. Basically Giroud short term, defoe long term.

Heavy snow possible tomorrow in East Anglia and South East - most likely around 6pm in London. Even if there is heavy snow, should be ok for the weekend's fixtures as Friday and weekend forecast is currently not too bad.

Rose is the best option. It's just those 8 yellows. Def Walker otherwise though (or Toby) but I'd prefer Walker due to ability to get attacking returns from open play.
