The Watchlist Updated – The Forwards

In our final analysis of the latest Watchlist standings following their festive overhaul, we now take time out to assess the latest movements among the forwards.

For those new to the site, the Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

There’s no change at the top of the rankings, with Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Chelsea’s Diego Costa retaining their spots at the summit.

Both players lead the forward standings in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on 123 points apiece, although Ibrahimovic is clearly the man in form.

Having climbed in value to 11.6 on the back of nine goals and four assists in his last nine starts, the Swede’s upcoming schedule (LIV, sto, HUL, lei, WAT) also gives him a slight edge.

There’s no doubt that Costa – whose FPL price has fallen to 10.7 following a recent one-match suspension – remains a reliable source for attacking returns, though, having blanked in only three of his last 13 matches.

Nonetheless, the Chelsea forward has only managed two double-digit hauls over that period, while the forthcoming fixture list for Antonio Conte’s side (lei, HUL, liv, ARS, bur, SWA) is mixed.

Ibrahimovic has penalties, free-kicks and has provided five double-digit returns, with a top score of 15. This compares favourable to Costa who has just three returns of 12 points so far and lacks dead-ball duties to bolster his appeal.

The Swede sat out United’s EFL Cup victory over Hull City on Tuesday but is expected to return to contention following illness for the Gameweek 21 collision with Liverpool.

Harry Kane sees his stock fall slightly this time around as a result of four blanks in six.

The Tottenham Hotspur frontman has retreated under the shadow of midfield team-mates Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli over the past month, who are both considerably cheaper on the budget at 8.6 and 8.5 respectively.

Kane’s 16-point haul against Watford in Gameweek 19 provided a reminder of his explosive potential, though, and with spot-kick duties in the locker, the potential for double-digit hauls remains.

The festive period was very productive for Jermain Defoe, who registered another three goals, taking his tally to 11 for the season.

The Sunderland forward surges back up our rankings as David Moyes’ side prepare to take on Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace in the next four.

Still available at a meagre 7.8 in FPL, it remains a surprise that Defoe sits in just 25.4% of FPL squads, given that he is the joint-sixth highest point scorer in the game, with 113 points accrued.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud both enjoy rises, having flourished over the festive spell.

Lukaku returned to form with two goals and an assist in his last three starts, and looks a solid option as a second forward given his 9.5 price tag in FPL.

The Toffees also face one of the softest upcoming schedules (MCI, cpl, sto, BOU, mid, SUN) over the next six Gameweeks.

No forward scored more points than Giroud over the holiday fixtures, and having started the last three matches, the Frenchman’s form protects his pitch time ahead of an enticing run of fixtures (swa, BUR, WAT, che, HUL).

Theo Walcott is thought to be closing on a return following a calf injury, though, so away from home, there remains the prospect that Arsene Wenger will utilise the movement of Alexis Sanchez in the lone striker role.

Giroud is perhaps more suited to home fixtures to help break down a deep defensive line – the Emirates fixtures with Burnley, Watford and Hull City certainly look tailored-made for the Frenchman, then.

Man City’s Sergio Aguero suffers another drop in stock despite making a return from his four-match suspension with a goal against Burnley.

Aguero started from the bench against the Clarets, and with rotation an ongoing concern regarding all City players, it’s questionable whether the Argentine, priced at 12.8 in FPL, will provide better value than the likes of Ibrahimovic and Costa, who look nailed on to start every match for their respective clubs.

In addition, having seen him surrender spot-kick duties in Friday’s FA Cup thrashing of West Ham, confidence in Aguero suffers a further blow.

Crystal Palace’s Gameweek 20 clash against Swansea had been earmarked as a “make or break” encounter for Christian Benteke, following a run of four successive blanks.

But after being forced off at half-time with a shoulder injury, the former Liverpool striker failed to provide the goods, and as a result, suffers another damaging fall in our rankings.

The Eagles forward is expected to be fit to face West Ham United in Gameweek 21, but given that Palace will be without chief creator Wilfried Zaha, who has departed for the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s no surprise that Benteke has been subject to further heavy FPL sales.

Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo is also heading in the wrong direction, with blanks against Burnley and Leicester City over the festive period denting our confidence in the Spaniard.

‘Boro’s short-term fixtures (wat, WHM, WBA) remain reasonably friendly, but with Aitor Karanka’s side still struggling for creativity, it’s likely that chances will continue to be at a premium for Negredo.

Two possible alternatives to the ‘Boro striker are West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon and Burnley’s Andre Gray.

Rondon did only muster an assist from the plum home fixture against Hull City last time out, but with the fixture list (tot, SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU) remaining favourable over the coming period, the 6.8-rated Venezuelan remains a viable option as a third forward.

Having reclaimed a spot in the Burnley side, starting the last five matches, Gray returns to the Watchlist this week after scoring four goals over the festive period.

The Clarets striker looks set to offer solid value at just 6.2 in FPL, although Sean Dyche’s side do face Southampton and Arsenal next, before kinder match-ups against Leicester City and Watford.

Wondering if he can nail down a place in the starting XI. On my wildcard and contemplating whether to have him or not. With Kurt Zouma also back - plenty of options now.

I think he could, but I doubt he will. It seemed more likely Alonso will get two or three games off during the rest of the season to manage the issue. Conte has said he wants to try Ake in a few positions which, to me, says he'll only be cover. I would expect a lot of cameos from him at first - and only for him to become a permanent fixture if Chelsea get an injury.

Do you think there is a risk of a cameo from him this weekend? I'm benching Phillips, de Roon and Evans for him.

It's a tough one - Conte might want to give him some time to acclimatise, or he might throw him straight in. He's certainly good enough for Conte to be comfortable with giving him a game. If you think your three on the bench won't get more than 2 points each (which is probable) then it's not a big deal to take the risk.

    What should I prioritise?

    Heaton, Pickford
    Ake, Evans, Alonso, Holebas, Pieters

    Costa, Ibra, Negredo

    A) Pickford > Grant

    C) Allen > Phillips, Negredo > Gray (-4)
    D) Allen > Phillips, Negredo > Barnes (leaving 1.8m to upgrade Ake next week)

Save your FT for 1 week and check out what's happening with Ake/Alonso. Then E. Ake/Alonso. If you're slipping then you can't afford non-players. Ake - Have a look at 'Boro - nice run of fixtures.
or Alonso to some other prem def.

Team looks fine - no need for WC. FT's are enough for now.

        I'm on Wildcard.

So I need to choose for upcoming games. United's fixtures look better in the longer term and I trust United's defence more than Bournemouth. But it's just that Smith offers an attacking threat.

    A) Costa + Lallana + Ake
    OR
    B) Giroud + Firmino + Rose

Only 1 winner, yeah? But worried about Giroud - is he finally nailed on now? Would have a forward line of Giroud-Lukaku-Defoe. None of the big 4 (Kane, Costa, Aguero or Ibra) but think I can manage without them, if Giroud is guaranteed 90 minutes of play.

          OK.

If you have no significant value in any player, option B is better - however I am not convinced that a Liverpool midfielder is needed at this stage of the season because a) they are in the semifinals of the cup and may rotate, and b) they may suffer from Mane being absent, and c) Sturridge may play striker and push Firmino out to the wings.

So I would rather have someone like Eriksen, Alli or Philips for the upcoming 4-5 fixtures.

          What do you think?

            • 12 Years

Got all 3 of them - Eriksen, Alli and Philips, along with Sanchez. Rose, Brunt and Baines in defence.

Maybe I'll just keep some filler for the 5th mid, and see how Liverpool do. Thanks!

Depending on your other defenders, I'd have Ake. I have four other defenders that I'd be reasonably happy to play most weeks (McAuley, Pieters, Koscielny and Jones), so putting Ake in for a good Chelsea fixture seems sensible and not too much of an issue if he doesn't play.

  12. Bunk Moreland

My defense is in trouble after Ake's move. Other defenders: Clyne (poor fixtures), Brunt (flagged), Holebas (flagged), Amat (not playing)

    Clyne (mun) > Rose (WBA)
Ake (unlikely to play) > Daniels (hul)
    Sigurdsson (ARS) > Stanislas (hul)

    A) Yes
    B) No

Ake to Chambers rather. Bournemouth have tough fixture if you look closely - don't think he'll be worth 5.2. You may want to consider P.Jones.

Well hul, WAT, CPL are easy fixtures but after that it gets harder and I would want to move Daniels to Baines. But Jones may be a good shout, can't expect much attacking returns from him though?

Plan to downgrade Giroud to Rondon in a few weeks (when he's inevitably dropped) and Allen to de Roon, at which point I can upgrade Phillips to Coutinho.

I'll have another look at the defence, although the plan is to start Ake every week Chelsea have a reasonably favourable fixture happy in the knowledge that the other four are all capable of doing a job when he doesn't play.

Allen is playing a lot deeper lately, Stanislas is probably a better option. Arsenal just aren't cutting it at the back, Rose is much better option. Combo of Heaton and good rotating keeper would be better imo. Ake mightnt even be playing at Chelsea. McAuley to Brunt.

Having two free transfers and no other pressing matters, I will move out Alonso this week. Who is best premium replacement going forward?

Azpilicueta? -have no other chelsea cover, but fixtures are so so
Koscielny? -great fixtures and have goals in him
Rose? -wingback with most attempts on goal lately, fixtures ok
Others? daniels, valencia and baines could outscore the above

I got Stanislas in this week so I'm all for him, but Hull have a new manager, think it's too risky captaining him.

Baines, even if they concede, there's a good chance of points from penalty or set-pieces

If Giroud plays I think Iwobi would be preffered over him. Really annoying cuz I bought Ox when he had a place in the team and then he got injured and now it looks like Iwobi is preferred over him.

Realistically, if Ake get minutes, McAuley is unlikely to outscore him by more than 1 point (i.e. a short run out at the end). If Ake doesn't get minutes, you're in the same boat as if you start McAuley.

                  1. MTPockets
                      7 years, 3 months ago

Realistic outcome might be McAuley: 2 points vs Ake: 0(=McA)/1/2/6 points. Which looks like starting Ake gives fairly good odds of matching/beating 2pts. But that then has to be adjusted by what probability you place on Ake starting/getting minutes in the first place. I don't think it likely he starts, and no idea on minutes.

That also ignores any probability of Mcauley clean sheet/extras.

I think it's safe to discount McAuley clean sheets. Agreed, he could grab a goal from a set piece. Ultimately, you'll make your own call. For me, Ake is ahead of McAuley on my bench this week (prefer Jones, Pieters and Koscielny clean sheet potential to Chelsea away at Leicester)

Currently on WC and the defence is still bugging me, not sure whether to gamble on Jakupovic regaining his place and still debating on a few places. I'd probably go Pieters instead of Nyom if I didn't have Grant.

              Grant - Jakupovic
              Alonso - Baines - Chambers - Nyom - Amat
Sanchez - Alli - Lallana - Phillips - de Roon
              Ibrahimovic - Costa - Giroud

0.8itb so can invest a little more however it could also be used to upgrade Lallana for instance.

Good team, I'd prefer to have Rose over Alonso and maybe another goalkeeper instead of Jakupovic(or Grant) as you never know when Butland could return. Risk Muniesa over Amat.

Seems a sensible choice. Unless the alternative is actually transferring him out, what's the worst that could happen? 1 point for a run off the bench? Expect McAuley to get the same at Spurs anyways (at best)
