The Watchlist Updated – The Forwards

In our final analysis of the latest Watchlist standings following their festive overhaul, we now take time out to assess the latest movements among the forwards.

For those new to the site, the Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

There’s no change at the top of the rankings, with Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Chelsea’s Diego Costa retaining their spots at the summit.

Both players lead the forward standings in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on 123 points apiece, although Ibrahimovic is clearly the man in form.

Having climbed in value to 11.6 on the back of nine goals and four assists in his last nine starts, the Swede’s upcoming schedule (LIV, sto, HUL, lei, WAT) also gives him a slight edge.

There’s no doubt that Costa – whose FPL price has fallen to 10.7 following a recent one-match suspension – remains a reliable source for attacking returns, though, having blanked in only three of his last 13 matches.

Nonetheless, the Chelsea forward has only managed two double-digit hauls over that period, while the forthcoming fixture list for Antonio Conte’s side (lei, HUL, liv, ARS, bur, SWA) is mixed.

Ibrahimovic has penalties, free-kicks and has provided five double-digit returns, with a top score of 15. This compares favourable to Costa who has just three returns of 12 points so far and lacks dead-ball duties to bolster his appeal.

The Swede sat out United’s EFL Cup victory over Hull City on Tuesday but is expected to return to contention following illness for the Gameweek 21 collision with Liverpool.

Harry Kane sees his stock fall slightly this time around as a result of four blanks in six.

The Tottenham Hotspur frontman has retreated under the shadow of midfield team-mates Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli over the past month, who are both considerably cheaper on the budget at 8.6 and 8.5 respectively.

Kane’s 16-point haul against Watford in Gameweek 19 provided a reminder of his explosive potential, though, and with spot-kick duties in the locker, the potential for double-digit hauls remains.

The festive period was very productive for Jermain Defoe, who registered another three goals, taking his tally to 11 for the season.

The Sunderland forward surges back up our rankings as David Moyes’ side prepare to take on Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace in the next four.

Still available at a meagre 7.8 in FPL, it remains a surprise that Defoe sits in just 25.4% of FPL squads, given that he is the joint-sixth highest point scorer in the game, with 113 points accrued.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud both enjoy rises, having flourished over the festive spell.

Lukaku returned to form with two goals and an assist in his last three starts, and looks a solid option as a second forward given his 9.5 price tag in FPL.

The Toffees also face one of the softest upcoming schedules (MCI, cpl, sto, BOU, mid, SUN) over the next six Gameweeks.

No forward scored more points than Giroud over the holiday fixtures, and having started the last three matches, the Frenchman’s form protects his pitch time ahead of an enticing run of fixtures (swa, BUR, WAT, che, HUL).

Theo Walcott is thought to be closing on a return following a calf injury, though, so away from home, there remains the prospect that Arsene Wenger will utilise the movement of Alexis Sanchez in the lone striker role.

Giroud is perhaps more suited to home fixtures to help break down a deep defensive line – the Emirates fixtures with Burnley, Watford and Hull City certainly look tailored-made for the Frenchman, then.

Man City’s Sergio Aguero suffers another drop in stock despite making a return from his four-match suspension with a goal against Burnley.

Aguero started from the bench against the Clarets, and with rotation an ongoing concern regarding all City players, it’s questionable whether the Argentine, priced at 12.8 in FPL, will provide better value than the likes of Ibrahimovic and Costa, who look nailed on to start every match for their respective clubs.

In addition, having seen him surrender spot-kick duties in Friday’s FA Cup thrashing of West Ham, confidence in Aguero suffers a further blow.

Crystal Palace’s Gameweek 20 clash against Swansea had been earmarked as a “make or break” encounter for Christian Benteke, following a run of four successive blanks.

But after being forced off at half-time with a shoulder injury, the former Liverpool striker failed to provide the goods, and as a result, suffers another damaging fall in our rankings.

The Eagles forward is expected to be fit to face West Ham United in Gameweek 21, but given that Palace will be without chief creator Wilfried Zaha, who has departed for the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s no surprise that Benteke has been subject to further heavy FPL sales.

Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo is also heading in the wrong direction, with blanks against Burnley and Leicester City over the festive period denting our confidence in the Spaniard.

‘Boro’s short-term fixtures (wat, WHM, WBA) remain reasonably friendly, but with Aitor Karanka’s side still struggling for creativity, it’s likely that chances will continue to be at a premium for Negredo.

Two possible alternatives to the ‘Boro striker are West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon and Burnley’s Andre Gray.

Rondon did only muster an assist from the plum home fixture against Hull City last time out, but with the fixture list (tot, SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU) remaining favourable over the coming period, the 6.8-rated Venezuelan remains a viable option as a third forward.

Having reclaimed a spot in the Burnley side, starting the last five matches, Gray returns to the Watchlist this week after scoring four goals over the festive period.

The Clarets striker looks set to offer solid value at just 6.2 in FPL, although Sean Dyche’s side do face Southampton and Arsenal next, before kinder match-ups against Leicester City and Watford.

Pat Nevin has suggested that Nathan Ake could be set for a regular place in the Chelsea first team this season following his return to Stamford Bridge.

The Dutch defender was hugely impressive during his loan spell at Bournemouth this season and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte opted to recall the youngster this month.

It remains to be seen whether Ake can force his way back into the Chelsea team this season as he bids to help the Blues win the Premier League title.

Nevin has been hugely impressed by what he saw from Ake during his spell at the Vitality Stadium this term and says he would not be surprised to see him fight for a place in the starting line-up at Chelsea.

Writing in his column for Chelsea’s website, Nevin said: “Nathan Ake comes back into the fold.

“When he left on loan to Bournemouth it always looked like he would have more chance of a few starts there than at Chelsea, but his progression has been monumentally impressive in that short spell on the south coast. He joins us back at Cobham with the expectation he will get quite a few more opportunities for the first team from now on in.

“Of course there are top defenders in situ and a few including Brana, JT and Kurt Zouma not even in the side most weeks, but such is Nathan’s improvement it is not beyond the realms of possibility he could jump right to the front of the queue.

“After scoring three goals in eight league starts from centre back for The Cherries, let’s hope he has kept a few back for the Blues between now and the end of the season.

“A cheeky little winner at Leicester wouldn’t go amiss.”

Still selling - I just cannot see him walking back into a defence that apart from a blip v a great Spurs side away has been brilliant. However he is perfect bench cover as able to play many positions.

Having 4 Chelsea my hand is forced somewhat - and i guess he is easily bought back if he secures a slot. Once we get past that Hull fixture it's less of a problem to lose Chelsea guys.

His 3 goals so far is impressive, and I haven't actually looked at his defensive stats, but Bournemouth conceded 3 goals FIVE(!) times in the 8 matches he played. That's hardly convincing of a player to move into the best defence in the league. Zouma was very impressive when he played, so I would have to assume he's at the top of the list for one of those 3 CB positions.

Results of going back to the drawing board after the *ahem* mixed comments:

    Grant 3.9
    Rose Baines Jones Smith 3.9

Dropping Stanislas, who has been one of the top five most attacking midfieldes over the last two matches, before hul WAT CPL?!?!?...not sure that's the best advice.

Looks great Bojack....as you say long term you can ditch whichever Spurs man is underperforming for another mid.

Keep Stanislas...great differential over next three.

I see this mentality alot in RMWCT responses. 'But hey, your new team is too good...why don't you try making it worse to avoid making bench decisions'. Makes no sense to me to make a good team worse.

But regarding this week bench Philips. WBA focus on defence away to the big sides, plus Spurs are v good defensively at home.

midfielders get more points, defenders get minus points for goals conceded, especially cheap ones from weak sides.

Makes more sense to me to invest in a cheap but effective mid with multiple points routes than a fifth defender that you will almost never play and when you do will get you between -1 and 2 pts.

I think in my nine or so seasons I've actually played a fifth defender about twice each campaign anyway.

What if Rose gets suspended? Or a defender gets injured? Or someone is doubtful in defense? Or goes out of form?

He is on WC and have to consider all factors, cant go with only 13 starters hoping everything works for him. Such things might lead to unnecessary hits for defenders/GK.

I dont really have problem with Stanislas or any of his attacking players, thats personal choices and I dont bother making changes in someone else decision to pick a player.

When things start going wrong, even 5th defender might be required 😛

You make a good point tbh. Rose suspension could hit me.

Jakupovic is 3.9 so hopefully he's got his place back.

Other option here is downgrade Smith (4.7) to someone like Friend to fund a playing fifth defender although I don't know if there are any at 4.2.

I'd advocate Smith to Chambers or another slightly cheaper Boro def that is nailed on perhaps. Not sure Friend is 100% nailed...but once you go 4.5 and below that's what you pay for - a bit of uncertainty.

4th def yes...make them playable and cheap but if those scenarios happen then there are plenty of alternatives for the four he has via a transfer before he gets down to fifth def territory.

A wildcard is meant to be the base really and designed to allow for transfers...of which there are 18 gwks worth still to go.

Makes sense... Personally, defense have been an headache over my 2 years experience and I always try to consider all factors when it comes to defense. Random benching, injury, suspension etc etc...

Where does the info come regarding Benteke being expected to be fit for West Ham? Got him in my team and been waiting all week for an update. Could potentially take a hit for Lukaku or Giroud but waiting for confirmation he is in/out. Got 2.2 in the bank as well!

          Burnley
          Sunderland
          Liverpool
          Hull
          Everton

All at risk apparently. A great chance for my rivals to catch up after I take a 100 pts lead. If it happened it would wipe out most of my team. I think a lot are in same position. Not sure if the games would move to midweek

Surely undersoil heating in the PL makes for fewer cancellations in the event of snow.

Extremely heavy rain is possibly more problematic?

Sure someone will disprove this with facts.

Its not the pitch its the fan safety inside and out, which the police/emergency services can sometimes get involved in over the clubs...

    Benteke possibly leaving CP

Which team would he provide most FPL value if he left?

For me, West Ham or Southampton

How soon before the deadline would we know if games are cancelled due to snow?

Or would it be too late for us

Weather is by its very nature unpredictable. Assess it as the deadline approaches, adjust captaincy, VC etc.

I don't think it will get to this - but if it does the only thing you are realistically going to be able to do is get a playing captain. Hardly worth ripping a team apart.

Per the anti-doping regulations in the FA Handbook, here is how Regulation 14 and the “Club Whereabouts” information reads in its entirety (we have bolded Section D):

    Club whereabouts information:

    (a) All Clubs must furnish The FA upon request with any whereabouts information The FA requires from time to time in respect of any Players who are not IRTP Players or NRTP Players. That information shall include as a minimum:

    (i) training dates;

    (ii) start and finish times of training;

(iii) the address at which such training will take place; and

(iv) the home address for a Player and any other address at which a Player regularly resides overnight.

    (b) The FA (whether through the Anti-Doping Unit or otherwise) may issue directions from time to time about:

    (i) the type of whereabouts information to be submitted by Clubs; and/or

(ii) the manner and time frame in which such whereabouts information must be submitted.

    (c) It shall be a breach of this Regulation 14 for a Club to fail to provide regular details of the times, dates and venues of the Club’s training sessions in the manner directed by The FA. ANTI-DOPING 2016-2017 258

    (d) It shall also be a breach of this Regulation 14 by the Club if the information contained in such reports is either initially inaccurate or has not been updated by the Club as necessary to ensure it remains accurate.

If Ibrahimovic is a non-mover at first in the Watchlist, and Costa is a non-mover at second, from what rank has Kane dropped to third?

The Riser / Faller / Non-Mover arrows are often inconsistent like this.

    Heaton
Valencia holebas smith -- mcauly Taylor
    Sanchez Philips Ali pogba-- fletch
    Kane Ibra benteke

A: gtg and hope teke is fit..bench has tough fixtures tho
    B: teke >> Defoe/giroud (-4)..leaves funds to upgrade pogba
    C: teke >> kaku (-4)...leaves 0m so little flexibility
    D: something else?

I'd go cheaper on the keepers myself. Foster has good fixtures bar this week so he could do as a sole keeper for a while. He also got 5 pts at Arsenal away so every chance he gets something v Spurs. WBA tough to break down.
