The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 21

Fact or fiction, Friday night’s media circus surrounding Diego Costa was always going to impact on our Gameweek.

Over 374,000 Fantasy Premier League managers moved to show the Spaniard the door in the last 24-hours as reports stated that Costa had been “dropped” for Chelsea’s trip to Leicester City.

Of those transfers, more than 124,000 shifted to Olivier Giroud but, more significantly, just over 76,000 were to look to Spurs’ Harry Kane as their replacement.

Despite Giroud finding the net for the fourth successive Gameweek, Kane’s hat-trick and return of 17 points stole the headlines and provided an instant reward for those who had reacted to the Costa kerfuffle.

Another 32,000 have already pulled the plug on Costa since the passing of today’s deadline, seemingly consigning the striker to a term of absence and dismissing the prospect of Chelsea’s next fixture with Hull City at the Bridge.

It’s not clear if Costa will be a factor in that match.

Antonio Conte was quick to dispel the talk of a dispute or “bust-up”, citing a back problem as the cause of Costa’s omission. The striker will now apparently be assessed ahead of Gameweek 22, as the Blues work to diffuse talk of their player being unsettled.

That will be no easy task.

Ironically, even without their leading scorer, Chelsea were to breeze past the Foxes in third gear, with Marcos Alonso, another Fantasy asset subject to recent media reports, providing an unexpected brace and 21 points to outperform even Kane’s haul.

With Nathan Ake’s recall, there was talk and even reports that Alonso’s status in the Chelsea line-up was at risk.

The Standard reported “growing injury concerns” and, while Alonso’s start at the King Power was never seriously questioned, there were new doubts surrounding the Spaniard’s long-term prospects following Ake’s return.

Confidence was knocked. More than 78,000 FPL managers moved Alonso out of their squads over the past two Gameweeks, reacting to the four goals conceded but also perhaps the reports of Alonso’s “problem”.

Post-match, Alonso himself confirmed that there was some truth in the chatter but, with his emphatic performance, he had underlined both his present condition and importance to Chelsea and Fantasy managers.

The noise and bluster surrounding these two prize assets has been difficult to shut-out – in Costa’s case, it will inevitably continue.

The striker’s remaining owners will now be forced to strap themselves in for a prolonged period of uncertainty, with the tempting Gameweek 22 fixture providing an alluring reason to sit it out.

Meanwhile, those holding Alonso will be strengthening their grip.

Whatever the “pain” recently felt by the wing-back, it likely pales in significance next to the agony now being felt by those who sold him over the last two Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Costa better be confirmed in or out for next week. There are plenty of replacements, but its such a great fixture if he does play

Is Gabriel Jesus really competition for Aguero's place?

He is ruled out for the Everton game, but for the future... I can't see it.

I think it will be, he'll play in that 3 behind Aguero so de Bruyne, silva, Sterling, Navas, Nolito will miss out

Always chance Aguero misses out and he plays lone striker too

It's shown that expensive strikers don't rule the world any more.

Most teams have midfields packed with near-strikers or actual strikers (Sanchez, Alli, Firmino...)

And most people's defences are rammed full of near midfielders. Rose, Walker, Baines, Coleman, Brunt, Alonso, etc. are all effectively 5-6m attacking midfielders with clean-sheet bonuses.

Cripplingly expensive strikers, non-attacking mids and centre-backs are a rarity...as much money as humanly possible should be ploughed into the above.

Thoughts on where to go with this team

      Valdes
      Brunt, Mustafi, Daniels
      KDB, Phillips, Stan, lallana
      Ibra, Giroud, Aguero

      Jaku, Ake, Holgate, Barry

Thinking of surgery this week for a -8, currently have £3.5ITB

      Ake>Alonso
      Daniels > Walker
      KDB> Eriksen

Would give me a line up of

      Walker, Alonso, Mustafi
      Erkisen, llanna, Phillips, Stan
      Ibra, Kun, Giroud

      Bench
      Jak, Brunt, Barry, Holgate

      Cech Pickford
Brunt Luiz Lovren Pieters Kingsley Hazard Alli Eriksen Phillips Allen Ibra Aguero Anichebe

      £1.5 ITB

Thinking of saving and sorting my team out with the 2 FTs the week after. Means playing Allen though...

Why not Allen to Pedro for example?

Aguero (c) punt vs Spurs is what I'm on now. Either him or Ibra.

Like @Lawro said - Sanchez on the wing isn't the same as Sanchez up front. He only scored against Swansea after Giroud went off the pitch and he went in strike

Giroud might not play next game though

Oh yeah, game changer. Can't wait for Wenger to give us a non-conclusive and round-a-bout answer on Giroud's fitness.

Origi > Rondon? Triple WBA. Have Brunt and Phillips.

I wouldn't do that, Rondon can be a pain in the ass to own. I would recommend changing to 352

Would be a problem then if Giroud is ruled out. Will have Ibra and Crouch/Barnes up front.

I can confirm the pain in the ass theory.

Is Lallana's position on the pitch expected to change with Mane gone and Coutinho back?

It was when Mane was gone, but I think Coutinho Sturridge Firmino will be the front 3 now so Lallana goes back to middfield

Struggling with the 3rd striker, currently on Benteke but he looks badly out of form.

      A) Keep Benteke - give him a couple more of his good fixtures.
      B) Sell for Defoe (would require 2 FTs and a downgrade somewhere)
      C) Switch to 3-5-2 and get Lallana/Coutinho instead

Didn't Benteke play with pain killing injections? And fair enough he wasn't great. I think I have other issues that have more priority.
