Scout Notes – EFL Cup Final

That man Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabs the glory as Manchester United snatch the season’s first silverware from a luckless Southampton.

Manchester United 3 Southampton 2

Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic started and finished an exhilarating EFL Cup Final that, on any other day, could well have been won by the Saints.

The Swede made it six strikes from his last four Europa League and domestic cup matches – he’s managed just one in four league fixtures – as United saw off a strong Southampton comeback from 2-0 down just before half-time.

In the light of two blanks in three Gameweeks, Ibrahimovic has been sold by more than 4% of his ownership base. The 35.6% who have remained loyal will hope to reap the rewards when United entertain a struggling Bournemouth side this Saturday.

Conversely, another striker who scored twice at Wembley, Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini, has seen his ownership figures bloom despite the Saints also missing both Gameweeks 26 and 28.

Snapped up by over 131,000 last week, he’s already been acquired by 52,000+ since Saturday’s deadline passed – at least twice the number of transfers in than any other player.

A cup final brace made it five goals from just three starts since a late January move from Napoli and he has transformed a Southampton side who had been struggling without an out-and-out striker since Charlie Austin was injured in early December.

While Gabbiadini clearly has the form, his side’s fixtures are another story. They will need to quickly shake off their EFL Cup disappointment when they travel to an improving Watford at the weekend before a blank and then a trip to Spurs round out a patchy short-term schedule.

Two double Gameweeks to come offers the promise to come, but they will involve tough home matches with Arsenal and United.

Southampton were very unlucky not to open the scoring at Wembley when Gabbiadini’s finish was ruled out because Ryan Bertrand was controversially adjudged to have been offside.

An Ibrahimovic free-kick, following a foul on Ander Herrera, and a Jesse Lingard finish from a Marcos Rojo assist merely served to enhance Saints’ feelings of injustice before Gabbiadini netted from Cedric Soares’ pass just before the break.

The Italian leveled three minutes after the re-start, Oriol Romeu hit the post and David de Gea was forced into a couple of fine saves as United hung on before Ibrahimovic headed home a Herrera cross in the 87th minute to win the match.

That United rode their luck is not in doubt. How Fantasy managers utilise the team’s assets looks equally clear-cut.

The Gameweek 28 blank surely demands patience before a string of attractive fixtures, involving trips to Middlesbrough and Sunderland and home matches with West Brom and Everton, lead up to a Gameweek 33 clash with Chelsea.

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Rojo, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Carrick 45), Lingard (Rashford 77), Martial (Fellaini 90), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: Romero, Blind, Young, Rooney.

Southampton XI: Forster, Soares, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Davis (Rodriguez 90), Redmond, Tadic (Boufal 77), Gabbiadini (Long 83).
Subs not used: Hassen, McQueen, Caceres, Hojbjerg.

Guys, small question just for the imagination. If you had the power to add a small feature, what would you add?
I'd personally suspend the player who receives a red card, meaning you can only field 10 players the following GW

      Get rid of the chips.

I'd also eliminate the highest variance features: chips, for sure, but I'd also be fine with nerfing captaincy. It's too much of a crapshoot, and it leads to weird scenarios like rooting against players you own scoring too many goals because you know others will have captained him.

The biggest one, though: bring back UFPL!

add another triple captain chip which has to used in the first half of the season, so it can't be used on a double game week.

i'd add a double bench boost chip. meaning points earned on the bench get doubled. it would make things interesting

I'd like a permaplay demand, whereby one player has to be kept in the squad for the season unless they are transferred out of the pl.

I thought it was better when there was one wildcard and no chips . I think your idea is quite harsh it's punishing people for something they have no control over and defeats the purpose of having a bench . Being able to avoid such scenarios by having a good bench rewards skill and good planning imo .

Chips are half the game mate.

I'm not a fan, they'll probably stay though. If anything, FPL may add more chips.

Alli/Eriksen to Sterling/Sane is it really worth (-4) and also transfer them out next week? We already know that we would have to transfer them out in GW28 if City have a DGW.

Plus the fixtures after GW28 I'd definitely want 2-3 Spurs players.

Personally I'm just doing Costa & Phillips ➡ Kun & Siggy (-4). Will save me a transfer and I can also get Firmino/Coutinho in GW28 for free and double up on Pool mids.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

I don't think it's worth it. However, the only way I see it working is getting Sterling for example and Cing him. Yes, doubling on pool mids sounds very crucial in 28.
would you like to share the rest of your team to have a a more clear image?

        Foster Jaku
        Luiz Coleman Brunt Mee Chambers!
        Mane Alli Erik Phillips! Clayton
        Costa Lukaku Defoe

        4.1 ITB 1 FT

I don't want to loose Alli or Erik this week for a hit I'd rather do it next week for free and get Firmino/Coutinho as I will also do Aguero to Kane in GW29.

the obvious one is Alli Costa to Kun (C) Sterling. I'd personally pull that trigger in a heart beat. Also, it may sound crazy but I'd also try to downgrade Luiz, have you considered that?

That would be the way to go I guess since you don't have Siggy. Plus Siggy, Alli and Eriksen might do well enough to cover for Sterling/Sane's points city players would become a transfer out waiting to happen post gw27

    A'noon. A little help... 1FT, 1.9 ITB

    Foster - Jaku
    Alonso - Brunt - Baines - Holgate - Chambers
Haz - Alli - Siggy - Phillips - De Roon
    Ibra - Kane - Luka

To get in Kun & Sterling, which is best to lose:
    A - Kane & Alli
    B - Kane & Haz
    C - Luka and Haz

Thinking A as don't fancy the Luka hokey-cokey

    Ta

C for me Hazard is away from home and never performs away from the bridge. I wouldn't sell kane in the current form, but that does mean doing the Luka cokey.

I'm going for a hits bonanza!

    GW27: Alli/Costa --> Sterling/Kun -4
    GW28: Eriksen/Phillips --> Siggy/Lallana -4
    GW29: Aguero/Lukaku/Lallana --> Kane/Gabbiadini/Sanchez -8

    What say you? 😀

Getting rid of both Alli and Eriksen before gw29 is not wise

Why not? I have them both yet I'm probably getting a red arrow this week... Will have Kane from GW29 onwards...

        Mane - Sanchez - Siggy - Sterling

Who would you replace for either Eriksen or Alli? Can't be Siggy though, too cheap...

        C) only as it is a double game week, i'm not a fan of hits but i think sterling will get your points back against Sunderland and Stoke
