Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope

The lull in domestic proceedings affords us time to check in with the latest batch of miscreants on the Suspension Tightrope, with a number of players still very much at risk of a ban.

As highlighted by the FA website, anyone who reaches ten yellows by the second Sunday of April (inclusive) will be subject to a two-match suspension.

With Gameweeks in each of the upcoming two weekends, in addition to a full set of matches next midweek, we essentially still have three lots of league fixtures to navigate.

The only sides that this does not apply to are Crystal Palace and Arsenal, who face off in the final fixture of Gameweek 32, which takes place on Monday April 10 – ie, one day after the cut-off date.

As evidenced by the lengthy list in your sidebar on the right of the site, three players are just one caution shy of reaching the ten-card mark – Joe Allen, Craig Dawson and Mark Noble.

Sitting in 10% of Fantasy Premier League squads, the Potters’ midfielder is the most popular of that trio – he still has to steer past clashes with Leicester City, Burnley and Liverpool to avoid a place on the naughty step.

Dawson has been drafted in by over 11,000 on the back of two goals against Arsenal last time out but must avoid falling foul of the referee’s wrath against Man United, Watford and Southampton.

Noble missed the Gameweek 29 loss to Leicester through injury, though has since returned to training. Nonetheless, with Pedro Obiang ruled out for the season, it remains to be seen whether Slaven Bilic will immediately rush his captain back for encounters with Hull City, Arsenal and Swansea City.

A further 19 players sit on eight yellows.

For those Fantasy managers eyeing up double Gameweek 34, this also includes Palace’s Jason Puncheon, United’s Paul Pogba and Middlesbrough trio Martin de Roon, Adam Clayton and Gaston Ramirez, who all play twice in that round of fixtures.

If any of that quartet were to earn their tenth booking in Gameweek 32, for example, they would trigger a two-match suspension and therefore miss their respective sides’ first match of double Gameweek 34.

Although Pogba is still struggling through injury, those considering the likes of Puncheon or Ramirez as cheap midfield options will have to keep a keen eye on their discipline.

Twenty players currently boast seven yellow cards apiece.

Among the big names here are Chelsea pair Diego Costa and Pedro, who are still at risk should they pick up a caution in each of the next three (CPL, MCI, bou).

While that feat is more than achievable by Costa, in particular, his 39% ownership will be somewhat soothed by one booking in his last nine league outings, while the 10%-owned Pedro has gone eight league outings without collecting a caution.

In saying that, it’s still worth noting that should either player contrive to somehow earn themselves a suspension in such fashion, they would only miss one league match (against Man United in Gameweek 33) as their FA Cup semi-final clash with Spurs takes place prior to a Gameweek 34 derby with Man City.

The same scenario applies to the 13%-owned Raheem Sterling.

Should the City wide man be booked in the next three league fixtures against Arsenal, Chelsea and Hull to resultantly trigger a two-match ban, he’d still be available for the Gameweek 34 derby against United as he would instead miss the Gameweek 33 match with Southampton and ensuing FA Cup semi-final with Arsenal.

United’s Antonio Valencia – the most transferred in player for the Gameweek – is also on seven yellows.

Now up to 14% ownership, the Ecuadorian could conceivably still miss the first match of double Gameweek 34 if he’s booked in the next three league matches (WBA, EVE, sun).

Ironically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who is also on seven cautions – will avoid toppling off the tightrope due to the fact that he is currently suspended.

The United forward serves the last of a three-match ban in the Gameweek 30 encounter against West Brom, meaning he can only accumulate two further bookings, in Gameweeks 31 and 32, and move onto nine cautions at most before the cut-off date is extended.

Hull’s Tom Huddlestone, meanwhile, will remain on seven cautions until the cut-off date passes as he will sit out the next three matches due to suspension after being sent off in the Gameweek 29 loss at Everton.

As mentioned, Palace will only play twice before the April 9 cut-off date, so both Yohan Cabaye and Damien Delaney are safe on seven yellows apiece ahead of their double Gameweek 34.

One player not yet mentioned – Watford’s Jose Holebas – remains way out in front for total bookings earned. The wing-back sits on 12 cautions for the season, just three short of the 15 required before he would suffer a three-match ban. No player has ever earned 15 bookings in a single Premier League season; Watford’s reluctance to break that record may well explain why the Greek defender was benched at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 29.

Besides GW37, I would say it's GW34 to be honest. Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool & Arsenal all have good fixtures and Utd have a double. Then you've got the Boro & Palace doubles too.

I think 34 is a decent shout if you want to pursue those doubles, as the sgw big hitters have great fixtures in 34 on the whole and you wouldn't want to bench them. I'm keeping an eye on Boro with this as an option, as I don't have a wc to set up for 37, and I prefer 37 for the TC chip

I'm considering it but it's wholly dependent on how Boro and Palace perform in the next two as I don't trust uniteds fixture list. Would go with Zlatan and bring in Zaha in 33. Have a Boro def already but need to see some form from Benteke, Negredo or Gestede for me to punt on the BB

Gabbi, BArkely, and Morrison all need to go soon--if you get decent replacements for the two midfielders now you might hand onto Gabbi until he is better, which could be very soon.

Barkley to Sanchez and Gabbi to Niasse would be my move (-4), then use the extra funds to upgrade Morrison (possibly JWP?)

What's people's thoughts on Tadic as an option to the end of the season. He hasn't had a great season having been in and out of the team and only having 3 goals and 5 assists to date. Looks to be in better form but would I be better looking at Redmond as a cheaper 4th midfielder?

    1. Sweetboi

Tadic over Redmond unless you need the dough. He seems a good option, especially with their next 3 fixtures and the DGWs.

Be wary of Tadic. Could work out for sure, but he got 2 assists from Redmond goals. That's not something you want to rely on too much. Him being on penalties though is the plus.

If you BB with all 15 players on a DGW, it's effectively 30 games. If you TC with a DGW player (and the rest of the 11 is on DGW), that gives you effectively 26 games.

So BB in 37 gives you an extra 4 games compared to TC. Is this sound logic/maths?

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years

I forgot captaincy with the BB = 32 games. So a difference of 6 games effectively???? Doesn't this mean that BB GW37 is the only way to go. I want to be convince otherwise, so please try. haha

The only other thing you need to consider is how expensive a 15-player team will be in 37. All of the more expensive sides are in it, and you might have dross in those extra bench spots. There might be other weeks (eg, 34) where you could engineer a glorious bench and actually get more points out of quality over quantity.

    2. Gamoriola of the Galaxy (Eu…
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 22 days ago

No because you ignored the fact that the (c) in the BB GW gets four games. So the comparison is 32 v 26

      1. fedolefan
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 22 days ago

You are making it convoluted. It basically comes down to if you have 4 SGW in your team when you bench boost. The TC will be played on a DGW player regardless of the week, so there's no need to introduce that variable games wise. The difference between the BBs is 4 additional games for bench players in the DGW. While you get 4 extra games, you are spreading out cash and if you look at the fixtures for GW37, it favors the big hitters. Quality wise, TC in GW37 is better. Mathematically GW37 BB has a clear advantage, but fixture wise for TC, GW37 is better and the fact that it may not be straightforward to have a strong 15 and all heavy hitters.

For me bench boost has to be 37, there isn't another great option to play it. I triple captained Aguero which wasn't great but I don't see many better options before the end in honesty. Sanchez triple captain in week 37 would be the one for anyone who has already used bench boost.
