The Watchlist – Valdes Blow Promotes Gibson

The impending double Gameweek has a major influence on our latest Watchlist refresh, with assets from three teams – Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough – gaining temporary boosts in the reckoning.

However, Monday night’s clash with Arsenal delivered some concerning news for those considering Boro defensive coverage, with goalkeeper Victor Valdes missing out with a rib injury.

Interim boss Steve Agnew declared he had “literally no idea” on a likely return for the keeper, who was due to be assessed following the training ground setback. While we wait on the prognosis, the uncertainty in the Boro goal diminishes both Valdes and replacement Brad Guzan as options.

With Fabio forced off with a knee injury against Arsenal, and match fitness perhaps an issue for returning duo Calum Chambers and George Friend, ever-present Ben Gibson strengthens his spot at the top our defender rankings.

That also means that Palace’s Wayne Hennessey, who has amassed 37 points and four clean sheets from their last seven fixtures, cements his spot at the summit of our keeper rankings.

He’ll face two strong attacking sides in Gameweek 34 – Liverpool and Spurs – but the recent shut-out against Arsenal will give managers hope that Sam Allardyce’s revived defensive unit can claim another scalp. If not, Hennessey’s propensity to earn save points – demonstrated by his 10 stops in the recent victory at Stamford Bridge – provides a handy fallback.

Also rising in our keeper ranks is Southampton’s Fraser Forster. The 5.0 target has a difficult single Gameweek 34 fixture away to Chelsea, although that’s followed by a match-up with Hull City at St Mary’s, which then precedes consecutive doubles in 36 and 37.

Monday night’s Riverside Stadium clash was also notable for the return of Petr Cech, who had missed three outings with a calf injury. Arsenal have only kept two clean sheets in ten – even conceding to Middlesbrough – but they face Leicester City next Wednesday and join Southampton in offering double Gameweeks 36 and 37. Cech, therefore, earns a tentative boost in our rankings, although Forster remains our preferred route into the Gameweek 36 double.

Elsewhere, Manchester United’s David de Gea missed his first match of the season at Sunderland, but returned in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea to maintain a high Watchlist ranking.

Jose Mourinho’s defence have kept an outstanding six clean sheets in nine and while the trips to Burnley and rivals City will test their resilience, De Gea could well be in line to deliver rare save points – particularly in the latter fixture.

Further down the ladder, there’s little movement for Burnley’s Tom Heaton or Hull City’s Eldin Jakupovic, who provide assured options with a strong set of upcoming fixtures – albeit without the boost of a double Gameweek.

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford remains on a simmer.

A popular back-up to Heaton in our squads, the Black Cat can offer a double Gameweek 37, although with relegation looming prior to those fixtures, motivation could become a factor. Desperate for goals and victories, Pickford’s lack of clean sheets is set to remain an issue, with save points his main source of income. The youngster has produced 36 saves in his last seven outings – more than any other FPL keeper.

In defence, the aforementioned Gibson is chased by Maya Yoshida and will doubtless give way to the Southampton option once Gameweek 34 has been cleared. Boosted by his two double Gameweeks, Yoshida has produced two clean sheets, a goal and seven bonus points in his past four Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Patrick van Aanholt provides a differential addition to our defensive options.

The Dutchman has scored four goals this season and makes a timely return for Palace’s twin fixtures. Introduced from the bench against Leicester City on Saturday, we’re backing him to oust Jeffrey Schlupp and retain a starting birth for the run-in. Joel Ward, as a most unglamorous 4.8 option, is replaced in our rankings, then, although he remains an alternative for those unwilling to risk the returning Van Aanholt.

Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia is also replaced, as team-mate Eric Bailly is swapped in, with the Ecuadorian’s starts over Gameweek 34 and the Old Trafford meeting with Swansea City far from assured. Bailly, as Jose Mourinho’s first-choice centre-back alongside Marcos Rojo, is now our preferred option, at least until Chris Smalling or Phil Jones return to give the United boss rotation options.

Just as Jakupovic retains his rank among our goalkeeper standings, so Harry Maguire finds a place in our defenders listing.

Back-to-back goals have finally translated his consistent threat into points and, with favourable fixtures to come, starting with the Gameweek 34 home tie with Watford, the centre-back/right-back remains in our thinking. We surely hold and play Maguire at present.

Elsewhere, Laurent Koscielny supersedes Hector Bellerin as our Arsenal option following the Spaniard’s relegation to the bench on Monday night as part of Arsene Wenger’s shift to a 3-4-2-1.

Similarly, Jan Vertonghen is swapped in as our Spurs candidate. With Danny Rose believed to be approaching a return to contention, Ben Davies’ stock takes a blow, while Kyle Walker’s vulnerability to the Kieran Trippier option has him ignored. Vertonghen, at 5.7, is the cheapest route available. However, given the clamour for three attacking options in the Spurs ranks, he holds limited appeal.

Above the Spurs man, Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels enjoys a renaissance. While Eddie Howe’s defence are far from reliable and are without a double Gameweek, they boast an outstanding schedule and Daniels’ attacking flair will perhaps be given greater freedom once safety is assured.

The Cherries left-back has three goals and as many assists this season and could prove a worthwhile differential purchase for those booking their wildcard for a forthcoming Gameweek.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

I have no WC so all transfers I make now are towards BB in week 37.
Any opinions on the following team?

    Cech, Bravo/Caballero
    Alonso, Vaencia, Bailly, Yoshida, Stephens
    Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen, Ozil, Pedro
    Kane, Gabbi, Anichebe

    Pick one:
    A) swap Valencia to Baily, Deeney to Benteke(-4, already have Zaha)
    B) Deeney to Benteke/Negredo(already have Zaha), and Heaton to Valdes(-4, but this depends on Boro press)

I think the best strategy for people in your situation is WC 35, TC Sanchez 36, BB 37.

I used my TC on Aguero earlier in the season so I played my WC last week and will also BB 37

Tough one. I'm in a similar situation but Origi instead of Kane. Considering Doing Vardy to Ibra and Origi to Rashford/Negredo.

For me Benteke is a no go BUT I do have Zaha. Still wouldn't consider though.

Why not Benteke? Ibra is clearly the best shout, but if you're unhappy with having three big hitters then Benteke looks like the best alternative to me - much better form then Negredo and winger Rashford

Although he's been good over the last few, he had a short spell like this earlier in the season too. To be honest, I don't fancy Palace this GW as much as I don't trust Benteke.

All about the fixtures/team and for me I'd rather Negredo's fixtures & on top of that I'd rather Rashford's team (Just). Also got to consider Benteke is much more expensive than the other two, though in this case it's actually irrelevant.

Is match fitness for Chambers/Friend perhaps a blessing in disguise? If they get taken off after 60-70 mins then they could have a higher chance of clean sheet points.

I've had Friend as a benchwarmer all season so going to play him (although means I have to bench Robertson and A Ayew), probably wouldn't get him in if I didn't have him.

So I am thinking to do Eriksen -> Hazard for a hit

Hazard on the other hand has great fixtures: 4 home games against SOU, MID, WAT and SUN

    is that crazy?

I could wait until next gw for doing it for free but I will probably want to brung SOU players like Gabbiadini and Yoshida so I would take a hit anyway...

      Interesting thoughts, thanks all.

The way I see it, Ibra will be needed to break down a stubborn Burnley defence, and Mourinho will want to play his strongest side against his city rivals because pride is at stake, and his sides always up their games against tough opponents.

That said, he could equally play Rashford against City because of the potential he poses for launching or finishing counter-attacks.

Tonight will be an interesting watch. United have their away goal so are likely to play the counterattacking game. It might even mean another rest for Zlatan.

I think the main benefit of still having your wildcard is being able to load up on some poorer options for one week only. They can be gone in two weeks. Obviously GW35 needs to be considered but punts on the likes of Lingard/Rashford aren't that bad? Otherwise what's the point in having a wildcard if you're not planning for just these two weeks?

It's so frustrating because I got Valencia back in GW18, kept him through the blank game weeks because he was the only nailed-on defender. Now even if Bailly gets an extra CS, it's very unlikely he'll get attacking returns and his returns will be cancelled by the hit.

    A) Vardy + Alonso > Ibra + Gibson/Bailly (-4)
    B) Vardy + F.Mori > Benteke/Negredo + Gibson/Bailly (-4)

    Really need advice here guys

    My current fw:
    Kane Lukaku* Benteke*
    0.4 itb

Is it better to leave it that way, or
    Kane Ibra* Negredo* (-4)?

Something to consider when choosing Crystal Palace players

In the last three weeks the combination of Liverpool and Spurs have conceded a mere 4 goals between them.

In the same period of time Sunderland and Bournemouth have conceded 16 goals.

Negredo is coming up against two teams who have shipped 16 goals in total in 3 weeks, while Benteke is coming up against two teams who have conceded only 4. I realize

In their last 5 Negredo has scored 2 goals while Benteke has scored three and made an assist.

I think Negredo is clearly the better option.

What about having de Gea - Bailly - Valencia for the coming GW? (WC afterwards)

High risk, high reward but would also stop you from having Ibra if you see that as a problem

I've got this now, no hits yet.

    Valdes(dgw)
    Valencia(dgw), Alonso, Azpi, Baines, Brunt
    Zaha(dgw), Alexis, Wally, Lanzini, Schneiderlin
    Zlatan(dgw), Negredo(dgw), Tekkers(dgw)

    So 6 dgw'ers.
Thinking on getting in 1 or 2 more with hits for fun.
Brunt to someone - then bench one of the Che defs(Azpi likely).
Schneiderlin to someone- then bench one of lanzini/Wally

    Suggestion???
And don't worry about me having to many crap players as I will be taking hits every week to get me as close to 15 dgw'ers as I can.

6 is plenty. How many hits needed next week when you don;t want Boro players? Plus Valdes is most likely out......

Valdes being out would definitely make me get 2 more in.
Brunt would be the natural choice but I think playing Azpi and Alonso at home is decent enough.
But Schneiderlin out is a definite, to who though?
No other mids feels enticing really.

Haha, if you are doing that then I would og Schneiderlin to that Serbian guy playing for Palace, the one on penalties. I can see a make shift Liverpool defense giving away a penalty to the quick feet of Zaha.

Brunt to Bailly is the best, Rojo second best, Gibson 3rd best.

    @CPFC
SA: Remy and Tomkins are back in the squad. Good to see with such a congested week coming along. We'll need it over the 7 days.

    Remy TC?

More reason not to get Benteke.

Not really. Remy might get some 10 minute sub appearances.

That doesn't really support your argument for TC'ing Remy.

How?. Remy did not play at all and all of a sudden he is supposed to take place the forward who is in great shape and delivering?
