Southampton handed further fixture boost

The Premier League have announced that Southampton’s proposed away trip to West Ham United – scheduled for Gameweek 2 – has now swapped venues.

The change was required due to the World Athletics Championship which is taking place at the London Stadium.

Southampton will now host the Hammers at St Mary’s on Saturday August 19. This, of course, means that the reverse fixture – scheduled for March 31 – has also flipped.

The alteration compounds an already hugely favourable opening three months to the season for Southampton.

They now enjoy a trio of home matches over the opening four Gameweeks with Swansea City, West Ham United and Watford the visitors, around a Gameweek 3 away trip to newly promoted Huddersfield Town.

That spell is just the beginning of an incredible run which has the Saints play just one of the top six – Manchester United at St Mary’s – over their first 12 Gameweeks.

Ironically, it follows their two Double Gameweeks at the end of last season which saw Southampton’s squad elevated as a key source of talent for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Managed at the time by Claude Puel, the Saints failed to convince over that season run-in, with striker Manolo Gabbiadini in particular, proving a major disappointment.

Fantasy managers now face the prospect of being forced to return to the Saints – who are still managerless following Puel’s recent departure – as a result of their overwhelmingly favourable schedule.

Depending on pre-season form, Gabbiadini may even be granted a reprieve as a third forward option. Meanwhile, at the back, Virgil van Dijk would be a likely target should he remain at the club, with Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic perhaps the current contenders in midfield.

As for West Ham, they are now forced to endure four away trips over their first five Gameweeks, travelling to Manchester United, Southampton, Newcastle United and West Brom, while hosting Huddersfield in Gameweek 4.

That will ensure that Slaven Bilic’s side will be seen as a no-go area, with their schedule improving from Gameweek 7 onwards.

Our season tickers have been updated to reflect this afternoon’s change.

Went badly for me last season:

      GW14: Bought Cedric
GW15: Bought Bertrand. Bertrand doesn’t start. Cedric doesn’t start.

GW23: Sold Bertrand after 5 starts from 8 games.
GW26: Sold Cedric after 7 starts from 12 games.

Albeit each with a reasonable PPG. Bertand got me 25pts, and Cedric got me 27pts.

Ha, timing... just posted this on the old article.

With West Ham v Southampton in GW2 being switched to Southampton being at home, I just updated my fixture ticker and was surprised to see it flagged as a MORE difficult fixture for a Southampton clean sheet.

West Ham only scored 19 goals at home last season, while they scored 28 away.

I'd still prefer Southampton playing at home in fantasy terms, but still.

Ouch. Between GWs 30-33, Southampton play new, swa, whm, ars, all away.

West Ham have BUR, MUN, SOT, che, for the same period.

Right, but in more games and he earned his BPS through attacking returns which usually boosts someone else's BPS too. Bailly played less games and earned more bonus - he gets BPS in the right fixtures to translate into FPL points.

Haven't fully analysed mind, just my superficial review.

You may have to revise that ... 😉

Valencia is showing well in my wingback table. I will update it tonight, and rethink.

Actually you're right - Valencia's bonus points don't 100% tally with attacking returns but Bailly still cleans up.

Valencia got 9 bonus in total, spread across 5 fixtures.
Bailly got 14 bonus spread across 7 fixtures.

This is despite Bailly missing more games.

All things being equal, Bailly attracts more bonus points. The question is whether Valencia can get enough goals/assists to make up the difference.

Pogba. Expect him to come alive this season and should cost 8.0. A new striker that's more clinical than Ibra was should convert the chances he creates. He was also unlucky in terms of goals last season, hitting the woodwork many times. Get a defender too.

Should not depend on fixtures imo

      No.

Based on his record from last season.

If, for example, Man City and Arsenal both had 10 tough opening fixtures you wouldn't see Aguero and Sanchez's starting prices being reduced because of it.

Good point. My gut reaction is that they should not be dependent on a subset of the fixtures at the beginning of the season.
        Cue Cedric at 6.0!!

      Shouldn't be.

This looks very doable to me:

    4.5, 4.5
    Bailly, 5.0, 5.0, 4.5, 4.0
    Sane, Pogba, Pedro, Phillips, 4.5
    Kane, Jesus, Firmino

I think it could be quite easy to pick a solid team this season assuming no Sanchez or Hazard.

      Pogba and Firmino, urrgh.

Sky sports say Chelsea now interested in Ox. Is the home grown rule still a thing or is it made up like the fair play rules?

England look clueless going forward. Have they even had a shot on target in the tournament yet?

1 and that was from JWP's Free Kick. They should be using width, can't get their full backs into game. To be successful these days you have to get your full backs into attack and use the width

They have had plenty of the ball wide in both games, they just can't cross properly. How often have they hit the first defender or sent it way over everyone?

I know it's very early but as it stands I'd start the season with this, estimated prices total £100m.

    Fabianski/Foster
    4.5/4.5

    Valencia/Cedric/Dawson/Smith/Lowton
    6/5/5/4.5/4.5

    Coutinho Pogba Sane Phillips 4.5
    9.5/8/8/6/4.5

    Kane Jesus Gabbiadini
    13/10.5/6.5

Don't let Doosra see you with Gabbi in your team. He's armed with an Enfield and willing to "help".

Alfie "Fox in the box" Mawson.

I think Mawson's goal threat might mean he'll cost £0.5m more than Olsson. If that swings it either way.

Maybe, though Olsson does offer goal (to a lesser extent) and assists both from open play.

No love for Forster? Or Yoshida will be the pick if we want the cheapest way into Southampton defence?
