Southampton handed further fixture boost

The Premier League have announced that Southampton’s proposed away trip to West Ham United – scheduled for Gameweek 2 – has now swapped venues.

The change was required due to the World Athletics Championship which is taking place at the London Stadium.

Southampton will now host the Hammers at St Mary’s on Saturday August 19. This, of course, means that the reverse fixture – scheduled for March 31 – has also flipped.

The alteration compounds an already hugely favourable opening three months to the season for Southampton.

They now enjoy a trio of home matches over the opening four Gameweeks with Swansea City, West Ham United and Watford the visitors, around a Gameweek 3 away trip to newly promoted Huddersfield Town.

That spell is just the beginning of an incredible run which has the Saints play just one of the top six – Manchester United at St Mary’s – over their first 12 Gameweeks.

Ironically, it follows their two Double Gameweeks at the end of last season which saw Southampton’s squad elevated as a key source of talent for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Managed at the time by Claude Puel, the Saints failed to convince over that season run-in, with striker Manolo Gabbiadini in particular, proving a major disappointment.

Fantasy managers now face the prospect of being forced to return to the Saints – who are still managerless following Puel’s recent departure – as a result of their overwhelmingly favourable schedule.

Depending on pre-season form, Gabbiadini may even be granted a reprieve as a third forward option. Meanwhile, at the back, Virgil van Dijk would be a likely target should he remain at the club, with Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic perhaps the current contenders in midfield.

As for West Ham, they are now forced to endure four away trips over their first five Gameweeks, travelling to Manchester United, Southampton, Newcastle United and West Brom, while hosting Huddersfield in Gameweek 4.

That will ensure that Slaven Bilic’s side will be seen as a no-go area, with their schedule improving from Gameweek 7 onwards.

Our season tickers have been updated to reflect this afternoon’s change.

I might go with a defender, midfielder and forward.

Yoshida, Redmond and Austin/Gabbi are my first thoughts.

Vvd and stephens. The new manager may buy a new CB. Yoshida wasn't a regular under Puel as well before vvds injury and Fontes departure.

Stephens plus VVD or his replacement, they will buy another CB if they go with three at the back. Just my opinion of course, especially when we don't know who the manager will be

  17. Pep's Rotation Policy analysed
    ★Kuntheman★
    • 8 Years

With all of the FFS talk about Pep and his “rotation policy”, I had to delve into some the statistics from the last season before he came to City, as I believe that his Bayern 2015/2016 team had the most depth of all of the teams he has managed (two or more good options for every position, just like Pep seems to be aiming for with City), and I believe that the more recent my data is, the more it will be related to his current thinking.

I analyzed the lineups from the first 10 gameweeks, while incorporating UCL fixtures in case rotation was a result of looking at impending UCL games. Next to the Bundesliga opponent you will find their final league position, in order to give you an idea of their threat level to Bayern, and how that could play into rotation.

    GW 1: Bayern 5-0 Hamburger SV(10th)

    Neuer

    Coman Vidal Muller Costa
    Lewandowski Robben

Now I will only focus on Bundesliga data, because, let’s be honest, none of you care about anything except your FPL points. 😉

    Neuer: 10 starts out of 10 (100%)
    Lahm: 9 starts out of 10 (90%)
    Boateng: 8 starts out of 9 (89%)
    Alaba: 10 starts out of 10 (100%)
    Bernat: 5 starts out of 10 (50%)
    Martinez: 2 starts out of 4 (50%)
    Rafinha: 5 starts out of 10 (50%)
    Vidal: 8 starts out of 10 (80%)
    Alonso: 8 starts out of 10 (80%)
    Thiago: 6 starts out of 10 (60%)
    Robben: 4 starts out of 4 (100%)
    Costa: 9 starts out of 10 (90%)
    Muller: 8 starts out of 10 (80%)
    Lewandowski: 8 starts out of 9 (89%)
    Gotze: 4 starts out of 9 (45%)
    Coman: 2 starts out of 10 (20%)
    Rode: 1 start out of 10 (10%)
    Kimmich: 1 start out of 10 (10%)
    Benatia: 1 start out of 2 (50%)

There are some clear points based on this data that we can apply to our viewing of City’s prospects going into this season. (TL;DR incoming 😉 )

    1) Neuer started every game that Bayern played. This makes it highly likely that Ederson will start week in week out. What complicates this is that Bravo is a “better” backup than Ulreich, at least in Pep’s eyes.
    2) In defence, Boateng and Lahm started almost every game that they were available for, and Alaba started in every game. Of course, Alaba is quite versatile, so that definitely played a factor.
    3) Costa started in 90% of the games, apart from one game when he was presumably rested for Arsenal in the UCL. Looks good for Sane’s prospects next season, especially considering how Pep rarely rested Sane this season. Clear trend in this data, and a huge point towards Sane’s potential in FPL this season.
    4) Robben started every game when fit. This, combined with Pep’s utilization of Costa, suggests that Pep sticks to his best wingers week in week out when he can.
    5) Vidal and Alonso started 80% of their games, and Alonso was strategically rested for a few. Suggests that whoever manages to grab a starting role among the likes of Toure, Fernandinho, and Gundogan will stay in that role.
    6) Lewandowski started every game but one. This suggests that the idea that strikers will be rotated could be incorrect, and the fact that Muller was utilized on the wings and at attacking midfield like Jesus and Aguero have been respectively this season suggests that we could see both Aguero and Jesus getting plenty of game time.
    7) Neuer(100%), Alaba(100%), Lahm(90%), Boateng(89%), Alonso(80%), Vidal(80%), Robben(100%), Costa(90%), Muller(80%), and Lewandowski (89%) started most games when fit. This suggests that Pep figures out a core group of players that will play most games, and rotation is not as much of a threat as we hype it up to be.

Based on this data I think it is fairly clear that we have exaggerated Pep’s rotation to a certain degree. It is also quite clear that Pep likes his wingers, especially his left wingers, to start week in week out. Our worries about the striker situation seem to be a tad exaggerated, and the defensive rotation does not affect the players as much as we probably expected. The goalie situation looks nice, but Pep’s preferential treatment of Bravo could throw a spanner in the works.

I look at this data, and Ederson, Sane, Jesus, and De Bruyne look amazing prospects. Kompany, Aguero, and whoever the RB will be look solid to me as FPL prospects as well. What do you guys think?

This is all well and good Kuntheman but he rotated like a mofo at City and only started to play the same players regularly together when he eventually hit a winning formula towards the end of the season

Are you going to publish Peps rotation policy since he came to City?

I'll need a small vacation, but yes, I aim to do that next and then compare. I figured that his Bayern squad had the most comparative squad depth to the kind that he is trying to build right now, so I started there.

I think we also need to keep in mind that Pep rotated until he found something that worked. Suggests this season will start similarly to how last season ended. I'll probably focus on the last few weeks of City's season in part two.

      interesting and distracting
my experience of pep as a supporter is of
=decisiveness, arrogance if you like ,treatment of yoof ,nacho and kun.
      =dithering-yaya and goalkeeping
=reinvention with determination when it is forced on him-navas reinvented then shown the door.

Clearly the past season pep has a team of overpaid ,older mercanaries ,called full backs;shocking CBs and a few young good forwards.I think he will use his financial muscle to get a better squad

As a FPL player Pep still has me scratching my head-as your research indicates I think rotation might be overdone but the only prices I will be looking for will be KDB and Sane-these boys will be fpl monsters this season

Some tireless running there - great work and an interesting perspective.

We did see Pep settle at the end of the season with Sane's run in particular demonstrating a change in tact. The Silvas will be vulnerable and Gundogan and Toure will surely rotate as will Sterling. I also think he might have PL and CL setups at fullback. However, like you suggest, I think some mainstays will emerge.

Bernat was rested for the UCL and played in each of the three UCL games that I looked into. Suggests there is a PL-UCL fullback setup for sure.

Aside from that, this data really does back our FFS consensus on Jesus-Sane-KDB

Similar squad depth, same manager, fairly recent.

Best I could do, given the circumstances. Going to look into Pep's end of season rotation, as that seems to be the time when he started to figure out his system at City.

How dare you let facts get in the way of a good rumour. Shocking.

Only part I might take issue with is the very end. I think David Silva is the player that Pep would look to be his king pin above all others. The only caveat to that is that he may think he's getting on a bit possibly.

      Great post.

This is good, but the conclusions seem misleading. The frightening numbers are there in front of us 'Vidal (80%), Muller (80%) and Lewandowski (89%)' and to a lesser extent all the other non (100%)s. The idea that Vidal doesn't play 100% is scary.

We know that the alternatives from other teams (Sanchez, Spurs and Hazard) will play every game they can. Even a slight bit of uncertainty is catastrophic if you're weighing up buying Kane or Aguero. Or KDB or Alli or Ozil etc.

This has confirmed that rotation exists.

Who are best 8-10 probably priced midfielders ? There will be plenty great options but chasing seems hard
    Here are some
    Alli
    Eriksen
    Pedro
    Sane
    Cout
    Firm
    Mane
    Ozil
    Maybe mahrez
Maybe 343 team can afford 2 of them
For me alli looks best. But between sane cout firm ?! Seem firmino love has gone. He can do huge again with both mane and cout on flanks ...

It always baffles me why gingers ware wife beater shirts and no sun block in weather like this

I have gone a bit red myself from working out in the sun today even with factor 50 on but this guy takes the biscuit

How on earth with City be able to play Jesus, Aguero and Aubameyang?!?!

Hmmm but he will always play 4 in defence so it just leaves 3 in midfield, one of whom will need to be defensive. So two spaces left for Sane, Sterling, KDB, Silva 1 and Silva 2?

Will be interested what the price difference is between Aguero and Jesus.

I'd love Chelsea, Pool or Utd to bid for Aguero. Could happen

Dream signing. Won't happen. Still the best striker in the Prem for me.

The more forwards they are linked with, the more likely he moves but yeah, Liverpool probably least likely

Same for me Wild Rover, Liverpool the best fit?

I'd guess Aguero on 12.5 and Jesus on 10.5

I'd still be tempted with Aguero at around 12.

Its ridiculous to think now that Gabriel Jesus was signed by City for 27m .

    What a Snip.

Is he really? Been strictly average so far. FPL points tend to mask performances. In a team that creates as many chances as they do, and with him playing striker, he's bound to get enough chances to score. The challenge will come later this season when they are in the Champions League and in the big games.
