Scout Notes – Pre Season

Huddersfield Town new boys Steve Mounie and Tom Ince score for the Terriers to boost their CVs for the role of budget options in our Fantasy squads.

Here’s the latest pre-season notes.

Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 3

Club record signing Steve Mounie opened his account for Huddersfield Town as the Premier League new boys came from behind to win their second pre-season encounter.

The Benin international, signed from French side Montpellier, was handed a tap-in by Chris Lowe’s fine cross before goals from fellow new signing Tom Ince and last season’s top scorer Elias Kachunga sealed the deal for the Terriers.

Ince’s strike was his second consecutive goal in pre-season as the midfielder, priced at 6.0 and owned by 2.5% of Fantasy Premier League managers, enjoyed another rise in stock.

Midfielder Kachunga – scorer of 12 goals in the Championship campaign – remains on the radar after his converted spot-kick.

His 6.0 price tag in midfield could prove tempting in light of Huddersfield’s kind opening run (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur). However, he is unlikely to take penalty duties from Australian Aaron Mooy, who missed out on Sunday with his pre-season break extended following participation in the Confederations Cup.

Terriers coach David Wagner employed his standard 4-2-3-1 formation, but the absence of no fewer than nine first-team regulars rather diluted the relevance of the encounter.

Tommy Smith (foot), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (ACL) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) were joined on the sidelines by goalkeeper Joel Coleman (knock), Joe Lolley (groin) and Nahki Wells (ankle).

Mark Hudson, who was on a coaching course, and new signing Mathias Jorgensen, who was attending his sister’s wedding, were also unavailable.

Collin Quaner recovered from a knock to make a second-half appearance and set up Ince’s goal, while left-back Scott Malone drew the foul that led to Kachunga’s penalty conversion.

Huddersfield Town XI to 60 minutes: Lossl; Lowe, Schindler, Cranie, Scannell; Billing, D Williams; Bunn, Palmer, van La Parra; Mounie.

Huddersfield Town XI after 60 minutes: Schofield; Malone, Schindler (Edmonds-Green 75), Cranie (Kane 75), J Williams; Whitehead, Payne (Hogg 75); Ince, Kachunga, Quaner; Depoitre.
Sub Not Used: O’Brien.

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

Lindelof is officially part of the FFS template.

Word of warning - looking at his stats, he takes 1 shot every 240 minutes so you are just relying on clean sheets and maybe bonus from him, really.

I think I prefer a £5.5m defender with a bit more attacking potential.

I think many have him as he's the easiest route into a good United defence. Any attacking potential is just a bonus.

Might as well go DDG if all you want is clean sheets.

How that Shaw is ruled out til the new year, Lindleof is a good way into the United defence which should be solid.

Going Bailly myself as he offers more bonus potential according to Lindelof's scout report numbers. Plus I think Lindelof will be mote prone to rotation than Bailly around fixture congestion.

There are no other 5.5 defenders considering we have Cedric/Trippier and don't want to double up with Bertie

Best option as my only Man City player?:

    A) Jesus (and RLC)
    B) KDB (and Jordan Ayew)
    C) Sane + 7m fwd

In both cases, the second player would be a bench player.

Sorry - in the case of C (which I added at the last minute), I would want a 7m striker to be playing.

But don't need to spend all 7m on a striker. Could do Ayew and invest 2m elsewhere.

They are only a few players short of a brand new team, may take a while in getting them all to gel and settle in. Plus their manager might not want half of them as it seems to be these players are being bought for him, rather than by him. But yeah, big expectations for Milan this year

  12. Player value v player price
    Deulofail

I think a mistake many people make (as humans) is to asign a value to a player based on their prices. It makes sense because that's how how monetary system is supposed to work every day of our money-crazed lives. However FPL 2017-18 isn't as robust as the supply and demand system we see at play in our local super market. These prices we're seeing in FPL are a bunch of people's opinions for a best starting price, and are set in stone until the season starts.

So when a player like RLC comes along at 4.5, and his circumstances dramatically change such that he is going to get minutes, many try to be 'rational' and combat the initial euphoria by judging him to be unworthy of our starting XIs, given that he's a 4.5m midfielder.

However, if he ends up being nailed, he could be actaully worth 5.5-6.0m, which is the kind of player people traditionally have as their 4th midfielder, which means they're happy for them to start in their team. If this scenario plays out, then playing RLC on your bench is a waste of that effective 1.0-1.5m in favour of spending more money on the same amount of points, which means fewer total points because you have less money elsewhere.

I'm not claiming that RLC is nailed. Of course I don't know that. But those of us with RLC in our current starting XIs are presumably doing so to cover the scenario in which he IS nailed (or near enough). Personally, I will tear my team apart again if preseason makes that scenario look unlikely. However, we shouldn't write-off RMTs with RLC in the XI simply because he's cheap. In the scenario that he's nailed, I'd struggle to make a good argument for benching him, unless you're much happier with your team with only 6.5+ starting XI mids in it, and less money elsewhere (which is definitely a possibility, though not overly appealing to me).

I think that you make a good point. There are a lot of players whose prices influence our perception of them, which is always a dangerous thing. However, specifically in the case of RLC, I would counter with this:

We have to assess RMT based on the day they are published. Right now, we have absolutely no data to suggest that RLC will be a regular starter for Palace. Should that change, then the perception of him will change, and building around him will become the meta. But right now, it's sheer projection and it's difficult to favour teams starting players who are reliant upon hypotheticals to score points.

Cheers Prokoptas. Perhaps if I just posted "..on the assumption that RLC is a starter" at the top of every RMT. Or perhaps if I just stopped posting them at all!

Have you revisited your Plexiglas article discussion recently? I posted a few questions and concerns, and I was wondering if anyone could explain why I'm wrong or to what extent my concerns are legitimate. 🙂

It's just a difference of emphasis. I wouldn't put anyone in my team that I didn't believe was a 1st choice starter. But maybe that's why I won't really start drafting for another 3 weeks yet. I think all these early RMTs are a waste of space to be honest. But maybe that's just me.

On RLC, I think people may be over-estimating him, though. I have seen him play quite a lot and he has always performed best in CM. Being used further forward is more recent and that was more to suit Chelsea's convenience than anything else. He is personally ambivalent about what his best position is but there's a good chance that he plays deeper for Palace than people expect, even if he does start games for them (which I somehow doubt will immediately be the case).

A succession of early 1-point cameos would kill his price. FFS 'hotspot' template picks are very dangerous where that is concerned. Caveat Emptor as far as I am concerned.

Ooo an interesting reply. Thanks Ruth.

I'm not sure how quickly he'll be sold to be honest. Many people will have back up options. My bench options with RLC starting GW1, for example, is Chalobah, Mee and T. Carroll (or similar variations of this). At 4.5 I can only sell RLC for Romeu. I'll stick with Carroll thanks. I can be flexible and shift my emphasis during the game, since the risk is low at that price.

I think more expensive failures are most likely to decline rapidly in price. Say a 5.5-6.0 mid who wasn't performing to a RLC-type 😉

I'll take in what you said about him though. I obviously don't know how he'll fit in or how well he'll do, so your opinion is useful to me.

        1. Ruth_NZ

Sounds like a 4-3-3, which is what I will probably do too. But I'd not have 3 x 4.5m mids in that. Carroll and Chalobah will (provisionally) do for me.

Maybe it's easier for me because I am quite content to start the season without Kane and I certainly won't have Sanchez.

            433. 442. Not sure it matters. RLC is either playing or on the bench or not in your team.

I'm sure you'd be happy to take Kane and Sanchez if your budget was 10m more. It's still your choice to spend your money on other players.

I think RLC would be more than worth it if nailed to spend the money elsewhere (and effectively increase your budget). Though that doesn't have to be Kane and Sanchez. I don't have Sanchez either, and may go without Kane too, as you saw yesterday 🙂

I'm not quite clear what the point is here. Surely you buy a 4.5 midfielder to park him on the bench, not play him. That's why I've got RLC; admittedly last year I had 4.5 Capoue parked on my bench and lost all those early points but them's the breaks. RLC will start on my bench too - if he gets off to a flyer his price will rapidly rise and I'm rosy. If he doesn't, well I wasn't looking to use him anyway. And if he does nothing and his price drops to 4.4, well so what? He's on my bench and I wasn't planning to transfer him for another 4.5 benchie. So really,II don't see the problem.

Well this is exactly my point Andy. Your Second sentence is assigning a value based on his price.

If I play him in my starting XI and get the same points as your 6.0 mid, then I have a spear 1.5m's worth of points advantage on you.

                If....

      Well said, totally agree.

Like you made clear, we'll see if RLC is a good pick soon.

The one thing I would say is a bit of an argument against what we think is that, if a player like RLC is our 4th midfielder, it becomes more difficult to move him out if he doesn't play well than if we picked someone priced 'closer to value' (a 6m midfielder). Not that this should make our decisions, but some people prefer to a more static team structure with certain positions filling certain price brackets and this is often a good strategy

Yayyyy just noticed my first HT!

This is a sensible point. I've thought about it, but I'm always happy to be a bit gung hoe about these things when they seem to improve your points output and give you an advantage. People will be taking hits anyway, and with 3 playing subs, you won't need to rush. 🙂

Ideally would want KDB Valencia Bellerin/Kompany and forget about Che defence

Almost think we have to get Lukaku with the ownership and if he hits the ground running OR will take a massive hit..

Kane should start well this year and carry his form into this season which I think makes him almost essential also.. (over Alli)..

This means do we go with a v cheap bench forward and play 2 up front and have a really solid Mid/ Def to start the season

    1. SuperMario
      • 14 Years

Or do we go with a Jesus/ Defoe type to cover the bigger hitters and cheaper in Mid in particular..

      Curious to hear some thoughts??

I'm leaning towards a mid-priced third striker (not Defoe specifically, but someone out of that bracket). You can find better value in the lower-priced midfielders than up front.

      Kane-Lacazette-Jesus for me

Kaku's ownership is irrelevant. He is a United striker who costs 1.0m more than Lacazette and Jesus

      Nailed-on-ness when fit:
Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Koscielny, Luiz, Kompany, Baines, Bailly, Bellerin, Rudiger

      Scoring potential:
      - by clean sheets
Luiz, Rudiger, Bailly, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Koscielny, Bellerin, Kompany, Baines

      - goals and assists
Baines, Bellerin, Koscielny, Kompany, Bailly, Alderweireld, Luiz, Rudiger (just coz I don't know anything about him), Vertonghen.

Contemplating taking a risk and going for a non-nailed on forward and lighter on defence and going:

    Foster ~ (Elliot)
Lindelof | Cedric | Daniels ~ (Mee | Dunk which may change)
De Bruyne | Alli | Willian | Ramsey | RLC
    Kane | Lukaku ~ (Crouch)

  27. Newcastle/Swansea - 2 way rotation

    Hi guys,

Posted this earlier but in case some of my efforts were overlooked...

I've seen people asking about 4.5 defensive rotation options and have had a look at fixtures for some of the key candidates.

This is a two team rotation, so would be your 3rd and 4th or 4th and 5th defenders depending on strategy.

The idea is to avoid having to play a 4.5 defender against a top 6 team.

I'm basing my analysis on the teams that I've seen people backing 4.5 DEF options from in their RMTs. That is: Bournemouth, Brighton, Burnley, Leicester, Newcastle, Stoke and Watford. Let me know if I've missed anyone...

I've come up with some options to consider.

The best option in terms of avoiding the big guns is probably Newcastle/Swansea. This would be Naughton + Yedlin/Clark/Lascelles. This gives the following opponents for the first 19 gws:

    sou
    hud
    WHU
    NEW
    STO
    WAT
    whu
    HUD
    LEI
    bur
    BRI
    bur
    BOU
    wba
    sto
    WBA

If Johnson or Cameron plays every game for Stoke, and you can stomach having them away at Everton GW1, some even better pairings shape up such as Burnley/Stoke:

      eve
      WBA
      wba
      CPL
      new
      HUD
      SOU
      WHU
      BOU
      NEW
      LEI/BOU
      SWA
      cpl

      WAT

      WHU

If you want to avoid the uncertainty and fallibility of the newly promoted defences, then Leicester/Swansea (Morgan + Naughton) works through to gw13:

      WAT
      bou/whu
