Scout Notes – Pre Season

Huddersfield Town new boys Steve Mounie and Tom Ince score for the Terriers to boost their CVs for the role of budget options in our Fantasy squads.

Here’s the latest pre-season notes.

Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 3

Club record signing Steve Mounie opened his account for Huddersfield Town as the Premier League new boys came from behind to win their second pre-season encounter.

The Benin international, signed from French side Montpellier, was handed a tap-in by Chris Lowe’s fine cross before goals from fellow new signing Tom Ince and last season’s top scorer Elias Kachunga sealed the deal for the Terriers.

Ince’s strike was his second consecutive goal in pre-season as the midfielder, priced at 6.0 and owned by 2.5% of Fantasy Premier League managers, enjoyed another rise in stock.

Midfielder Kachunga – scorer of 12 goals in the Championship campaign – remains on the radar after his converted spot-kick.

His 6.0 price tag in midfield could prove tempting in light of Huddersfield’s kind opening run (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur). However, he is unlikely to take penalty duties from Australian Aaron Mooy, who missed out on Sunday with his pre-season break extended following participation in the Confederations Cup.

Terriers coach David Wagner employed his standard 4-2-3-1 formation, but the absence of no fewer than nine first-team regulars rather diluted the relevance of the encounter.

Tommy Smith (foot), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (ACL) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) were joined on the sidelines by goalkeeper Joel Coleman (knock), Joe Lolley (groin) and Nahki Wells (ankle).

Mark Hudson, who was on a coaching course, and new signing Mathias Jorgensen, who was attending his sister’s wedding, were also unavailable.

Collin Quaner recovered from a knock to make a second-half appearance and set up Ince’s goal, while left-back Scott Malone drew the foul that led to Kachunga’s penalty conversion.

Huddersfield Town XI to 60 minutes: Lossl; Lowe, Schindler, Cranie, Scannell; Billing, D Williams; Bunn, Palmer, van La Parra; Mounie.

Huddersfield Town XI after 60 minutes: Schofield; Malone, Schindler (Edmonds-Green 75), Cranie (Kane 75), J Williams; Whitehead, Payne (Hogg 75); Ince, Kachunga, Quaner; Depoitre.
Sub Not Used: O’Brien.

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

Why does everyone think WBA are going to keep clean sheets?

    2016/17 - 6
    2015/16 - 11
    2014/15 - 16

Their defence is not getting better - they are all getting older and WBA have not reinforced - they have a very small and quite injury prone squad by PL standards.

    Foster
    Dawson Evans McAuley Brunt
    Livermore Yacob
    Phillips Rodriguez Chadli
    Rondon

Myhill, Nyom, Morrison, McLean, McManaman, Robson-Kanu, Leko

So you think they'll keep even less clean sheets next season? They're only gonna do better, expecting 10-15 from them.

Moreover, the reason why everyone is going for someone like Foster is because of the opening fixtures.

8 - 10 clean sheets at most and that is if they buy defenders and midfielders. McAuley is 37. Brunt is 32. Evans is injury prone (will do well to complete 30 PL games). They have no reinforcements.

Bournemouth, West Ham, Palace, Leicester all look better options than WBA.

Therefore would you go Ake and Daniels over McAuley and Dawson... have 3 5.0 defenders in my backline, also Cedric.

They dried up last season and I don't see them strengthening; in fact their oldies are even older. The Baggies and Stoke are looking deeply uninspiring to me and I think they'll struggle this term.

They were 'at the beach' once they hit 40 points. They're still good for CS imo.

      Agree with the gist.

Foster represents decent value given the fixtures and saves etc. They'll be good for 8-10 CS imo.

Dawson/McAuley only worth it with goals, which is more than possible. I'd expect 2-3 cleanie from first 7 or so

    RMT Please
    Forster, Elliot,
    Milner, Trippier, Lindehof, Lascelles, Rosenior
De bruyne, Alli, Willian, Walters, Carroll
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Austin

Fairly happy with it. Think it's a team that has goal all over.

What's everyone think of Jon Walters. Hardly anyone has him and seems a steal at 5.5 in midfield if he plays.

Only player I'm unsure about is Austin, as I'm unsure who will be first choice out of him and Gabbiadini. Southamptons first 11 fixtures are amazing though so surely worth a punt.

You sort of answered your own question there. I'm not sure about Walters and Austin could be a no go. Gabbiadini is more likely. Then you'll have Carroll come on which ain't great.

As a Southampton fan I believe Gabbi is our number one, not sure however what formation the gaffer will play. Might be beneficial to have a look at what formation he played at Alvarez last season. Have it noted his side were able to keep clean sheets but struggled scoring goals.

I understand where you're coming from, but I like Dawson's goal threat and like the transfer flexibility of having a 5.0 defender in there rather than 2 x 4.5's. Thanks though dude.

Have you looked at Palace and Huddersfield's fixtures? Willian will start because Hazard is injured, Sane looks like a starter too.
I feel dirty having Ince, as a Forest man, so would be open to changing for another 6.0 but not sure who.

I really want KDB in my team but I am concious about balance. I think Lanzini will have a good season and Kolasinac should do well if he is given a wingback position (some reservations as he is new to the league however).

    A) (current squad) Sane, Lanzini and Kolasinac
    B) KDB, Tadic and Arsenal 5.5 (Monreal most likely)

Alternatively I could downgrade Aguero to Jesus but I rate Aguero much more highly.

Im avoiding KDB for now. He's not someone I would ever captain.

Point taken on the captain issue but he will assist a lot of goals and, I think, will be quite nailed this season. He will also score the odd few from set pieces.

Alonso, milner and kolasinac will likely outperform most 7m mids and the saving enables a strong front 3

I'm starting with four at the back. Although a 5th defender appeals I think that very quickly we are going to want at least three midfielders so the 5-2-3 doesn't offer enough flexibility IMO.

Bertie and Cedric on the flanks. In CD we don't know if VVD will still be there. If he is one of Yosh or Stephens. If he isn't possibly Yosh AND Stephens but I'd expect the VVD money to be invested in incomers.

    Can't decide. Help me maybe?
    A) begovic + dawson/yoshida

    And which one?
    Currently on B

A, but I would prefer Cedric and Ake, if you don't have them already

Double up won't affect your points, and getting the right def is more important that guessing the right GK imo. You're happy to double on Cerdric Yoshida then!

Of course I'm happy with cedric and yoshida. But not with begovic and another Bou defender. Saints has great fixtures
            Maybe like this:
            A) yoshida and begovic
            B) lascelles and forster

Maybe you can have better plan. Personally I'm not a fan of 5 midfielders.

              • 8 Years

Quite far from 5 midfields. Not sure how you thought you could tell, or what formation means for points.

            A) Foster
            Trippier - Cedric - Bertrand - Kolasinac
            Salah - Loftus-Cheek - De Bruyne - Eriksen
            Lacazette - Kane

Elliot | Carroll, Fletcher, Mee (100.0m)

            B) Foster
            Trippier - Cedric - Bertrand - Ake
            Salah - Loftus-Cheek - De Bruyne
            Lacazette - Jesus - Kane

            Elliot | Carroll, Chalobah, 4.0 (100.5m)

Was chatting to Greenwindmill over the weekend and he reckons Elliott at Newcastle is first choice. Might be a nice option at £4m if that's the case.

Already in my team as I thought he had a chance at first choice. Even if he doesn't it doesn't really make much difference to my team.

A lot of people will be caught out if Benitez brings in a keeper after GW1. You'll have 2 unusable keepers and likely no cash. You'll need to take a hit and lose someone you didn't want to.
