Development Squad – Heatmaps Preview

Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

What are current thoughts on Ramsey? Tempted to get him over Pogba and use the extra mill elsewhere...

Tempted but unsure of game time and where he will play. Could be a bargain

i think ramsey will be epic this year. he's been playing well and now has confidence and full fitness. End of last season was great too. Remember a couple or three season ago when he was on fire? ....

I'm working on two drafts at the moment so any thoughts on which you would go for would be appreciated:

    Team A
    Fab Foster
    Tripp Daniels Cedric Cahill Mee
    Eriksen Willian KDB Loftus-Cheek Capoue
    Firmino Rooney Lukaku

    Team B
    Begovic Foster
    Tripp Rangel Cedric Lindelof Mee
    Alli Willian KDB Pogba Loftus-Cheek
    Firmino Rooney Lukaku

I'm still undecided on Rooney and Firmino. Team A has more money in defence but team B has a stronger Midfield. I'm going to play both teams either 352 or 343

Yeah I was thinking that but I've got Alli for cover if Kane blows up.

Another quiet day at the office. Man mauled by three dogs at the bookies over the road, followed by an armed police raid on the flat above the bookies after a gun was spied.

If he stays at the club Coutinho.
With pretty good fixtures for him i'll say benteke, otherwise Defoe will always score. Cheaper options would be Chicharito and Austin.

Those fixtures are seriously tempting me to board the Ince train from GW1.

Surely at 6.0 we'll see some early bolters to move to should the pick go pear-shaped?

Hi everyone. So i played with my different options with the Rate my Team calculator and the best team i get from it after 6 GW is the following, what do you guys think?

    Forster (Elliot)
    Bertrand, Valencia, Trippier (Dawson, Rangel)
    Fabregas, Pogba, Alli, Zaha (RLC)
    Lukaku, Jesus, Austin

    Team score: 346,25

    Thoughts?

    Any improvements guys?

    DDG (elliot)
    Alonso Trippier Mee Yoshida (Rangel)
    Zaha Ward-Prowse Pogba KDB (RLC)
    Kane Lukaku (Mcburnie)

Currently have 1.0m to spend debating:
    a) Upgrading ward prowse to tadic/redmond
    b) Upgrading Mee to Mustafi
    c) Upgrading Rangel to a 5.0 defender

Haven't played around with these heatmaps yet (are they already up and running?) but they will be a welcome addition indeed.

What I would most like is something that will show shot location (as on Squawka). Will it be possible to combine heatmaps with SoTs or goal attempts to get a picture of that?

    Nice improvement anyway. 🙂

Does anyone actually care who's on their bench? Are you going for fodder all the way, or are you factoring in rotation options?

    I'm on the former:

    4.0 keeper
    2x 4.5 playing mids (decent 2pt cover)
    4.0 defender or 4.5 mid/fwd
