The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i hadn't heard any suggestion that his position was under threat. if he's the preferred set piece taker, i'd say he'd have to do something pretty awful to be dropped. but i'm no saints expert.

There's a lot of players that didn't get close to as many points as they could've gotten playing the same way on another day...and it's funny because a lot of murmurs on here are about dropping them

I only felt that urge with KDB, and I think it is because of the many assets City has, but no knee jerk here—yet

He's definitely one of them...found myself laughing at the owners wanting to drop him while I was trying to think of how to bring him in. Few players come to mind: De Bruyne, Alonso, Jesus, Gabbiadini, Bertrand.

Keep him for now. Nothing to do with Pulis. Phillips will start every game, get subbed early and blank. Cherish those 3 pointers. He does better away from home, so I'd definitely keep him for the next GW and possibly even the one after that.

RLC played on the wing in the first half where he was largely ineffective. Moved to CM at half time and was by far the best player on the pitch then. Not good FPL wise as he was rather defensive at CM.

kola did what he did from the back this week. when kosc and mustafi are back it'll be them and monreal at the back with kola in the wingback position.

      so, in equation format:

performance against leicester + more attacking position - defensive responsibility = ?

my guess is ? = lots of points

Rest of the world doesn't know this, and you may not care, but I discovered today in USA the extra overflow games were not available on my cable subscription any longer. Used to be, I could record all games for every week, but NBC put 3 games behind a pay-wall. Now these games are $50.00. They are only available through their app. I can't record them on my DVR so why would I pay for them? I didn't see anything other than low-lights of Palace. At least I might get more done around the house on the weekends.

There are loads of players I took out of my final draft that I'd like to ship back in, but as regards the 15 guys I am left with, sure some didn't fire yesterday - Zaha, KdB, Jesus, but I wouldn't panic. The only one i do regret ending up with is my last substitute, a punt of 4.5m TFM. So I'm still g2g for GW2 - no dramas!

None ... Danilo is on borrowed time but that was always the case; have enough squad depth to cope with that for now.

in an earlier XI draft i had mounie. ultimately went with rodriguez. though i would've loved to have mounie's points, i am staying with jrod for now. he's a proven PL goalscorer and with brunt and phillips (and mccarthy, who looked dangerous and powerful in midfield) around him, he will put plenty in the net.

huddersfield had a dream start and have strong fixtures, but you just have to wonder if they will catch another team by surprise the way they did palace last night. less quality in midfield to continue feeding him chances.

the card was also unlucky. half second either way and it wouldn't have come.

yeah just realized that Palace is playing LIV next so decided to hold and Rooney has tough fixtures so holding is a nice option for now unless any injury.....

But Gabbi is disappointing, so may have to replace him

    Stupid first week over reaction?

Kolasinac and Gabbi > Hegazi(Or some other 4.5 Defender) and Firmino? or just stick

That would still leave me with Danilo/Daniels/Stephens(Rangel) on Defense

Most of them will have Trolkaku and Kane. Ritchie and a United defender come next. So around 3-4 I think.

      Undecided, wait.

I am tempted by Firmino now because he is on penalties. I thought Milner might play instead of Can but at the very least Firmino will get half the penalties. I don't think KDB will score more than Salah or Mane. So doubling with Salah Firmino is a lot cheaper than KDB Aguero or KDB Jesus. At the moment I have Salah and Jesus. Will wait and watch a little while though.

Before the season I read each and every interview with the FPL winner that FFS has done on here in the past. A lot of it typical advice and unsurprising tactics about consistency but what stuck with me is how many said this was the first year they'd really had faith in their team and transferred less players early and taken less hits. I think, especially early on, its important to remember why you choose a player in the first place because in most cases it was not just for 1 week. And with that...i'll be praying and sticking with Gabbiadini
