Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Goalkeepers

With the time to take stock over the international break, we’ve updated our Watchlist rankings to aid those mulling over their Wildcard options ahead of Gameweek 8.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These rankings give an indication of our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Swansea City custodian Lukasz Fabianski is our favoured keeper over the mid-term.

Paul Clement’s men play four times at home in the next six, as Huddersfield, Leicester City, Brighton and Bournemouth make their way to the Liberty Stadium. With a visit to Burnley also looming, only a Gameweek 10 trip looks seriously problematic, with save points likely to be on offer against Fabianski’s former club.

The Pole ticks a number of boxes for those shopping for a new keeper.

At least four FPL points clear of any defensive team-mate, his price of 4.5 offers the joint-cheapest route into the Swans’ rearguard.

He also leads the way for total saves (30) over the first seven Gameweeks and has returned seven save points already, more than any other stopper.

Yet there are alternatives in defence in the sub-5.0 bracket among the Swans ranks. Kyle Naughton’s raids down the right have already delivered an assist, while Federico Fernandez is the bonus point leader, with five to his name already.

Newcastle’s Rob Elliot remains the cheapest starting keeper in FPL and arguably remains the current low-cost “fire-and-forget” option to rival Fabianski.

After seven Gameweeks, the Magpies have only conceded more than one goal on one occasion – against Spurs in the season opener after going down to 10 men.

Having blunted Liverpool’s attack in Gameweek 7, Rafa Benitez’s men can look to the upcoming schedule with a greater degree of confidence, with five very decent match-ups (sot CRY bur BOU WAT) over the next six.

Elliot’s value remains exceptional as a route into a defence that has conceded just six times and claimed two clean sheets.

In addition, while defender Chancel Mbemba has previously offered a 4.0 alternative in Benitez’s rearguard, he was omitted from the squad against Liverpool. The DR Congo international would seem unlikely to oust Javier Manquillo at Southampton in Gameweek 8 following long-haul flights over the international break.

The only caveat with Elliot is perhaps a lack of saves and therefore the opportunity to return additional points, including bonus. He has earned just one save point in his last three outings, with his Magpies’ defence restricting opponents’ efforts on goal.

Joe Hart’s budget-friendly price tag is also key to his lofty position in our current listing.

Still valued at just 4.5, he offers the least expensive route into a West Ham defence that has chalked up three clean sheets in the last four Gameweeks.

Clashes against Burnley, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Watford over the next five offer Slaven Bilic’s side the opportunity to maintain that recent upturn in defensive form.

Yet, like Elliot, Hart has been struggling for save points – he’s supplied just one of the first seven matches.

If you have funds to spend, though, Aaron Cresswell represents a more appealing option at 5.0 – he’s ranked top among defenders for crosses and successful crosses and is placed second only to Spurs’ Ben Davies for chances created.

Just two points off the top of the keeper standings, Southampton’s Fraser Forster still has the schedule to build momentum before the fixtures turn in Gameweek 12.

Compelling home encounters with Newcastle, West Brom and Burnley in the next four, allied with a trip to Brighton, suggests he can add to his three clean sheets.

Having racked up seven save points in as many fixtures, Forster’s appeal is also strengthened by the uncertainty surrounding the likely starters in central defence at Southampton.

Along with Cedric Soares, he’s the cheapest of the definite starters under Mauricio Pellegrino, but has so far chalked up 15 points more than the Portuguese right-back.

Stoke City’s Jack Butland is likely to climb in our estimations once his daunting trip to Man City has passed.

The Potters have mustered just a single clean sheet and shipped 11 goals thus far, but that’s partly down to an evil opening schedule. After the Etihad visit has passed, they will have played six of last season’s top eight in the first eight matches.

From Gameweek 9, though, Mark Hughes side have six strong fixtures (BOU wat LEI bha cry SWA) in the subsequent seven to improve that record.

At a cost of 5.0, Butland’s prospects may be dented if Kevin Wimmer or Geoff Cameron – both at 4.4 – can claim a regular spot at the back over that run.

Much could depend on the return of Ryan Shawcross. Stoke conceded just two goals in the first three Gameweeks, but have since shipped nine in the subsequent four with their skipper sidelined with another back injury.

With Burnley skipper Tom Heaton nursing a dislocated shoulder, Nick Pope looks set to benefit from the Clarets’ kind upcoming schedule.

Since replacing the stricken Heaton in Gameweek 4, Pope has registered four save points and three bonus points in four appearances, with Sean Dyche’s defence conceding just twice during that spell.

Pope hosts West Ham, Newcastle and Swansea and travels to Southampton in the next five, fixtures that suggest he will continue offering value at 4.5. Burnley also work very efficiently with Swansea as a rotation pairing up to Gameweek 20, providing a convincing combination for those favouring Fabianski.

Impressively, Pope has saved 94.4% of shots faced this season (17/18), a higher percentage than any keeper, with Heaton back on 66.6%.

Yet the likes of Stephen Ward and Ben Mee offer greater attacking upside at 4.6 and 4.5 in the Burnley defence, while the similarly-priced James Tarkowski is the number one player for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) so far.

Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel (5.0) also has some kind fixtures and faces just two of last season’s top six in the next 11 Gameweeks.

Like Pope, though, there are more attractive options in his back four, with the 5.1-priced Harry Maguire already providing a goal and two assists this season.

Yet Schmeichel has matched Maguire for points (33) so far, having produced six bonus and six save points.

Manchester City’s Ederson (5.5) clearly has the form to warrant attention, with just two goals against in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Back-to-back home matches with Stoke and Burnley, allied with trips to West Brom and Leicester in the next five, affords him the platform to record further defensive returns.

Team-mate Nicolas Otamendi (5.7) is a more appealing option at minimal extra outlay. The Argentine has already found the net, while only two defenders have managed more efforts in the box than his six.

However, while Otamendi has so far been immune to Pep Guardiola’s rotation, this will always be a threat hanging over the Man City defence. Otamendi also sits on three bookings – pick up another yellow card, and he will surely be more vulnerable should Guardiola’ attempt to manage a potential suspension.

Ederson, along with Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois (5.5), arguably has the strongest fixtures of any premium-priced keeper, right up to the first Wildcard curfew after Gameweek 21.

Courtois’ stock, while strong heading into a lengthy favourable schedule, is dented by the appeal of attacking options in the Chelsea defence – namely Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Elsewhere, Brighton’s Mat Ryan (4.5) is braced for four solid home fixtures (EVE SOT STK CPL) in the next seven, with trips to West Ham and Swansea also on his agenda.

Those Amex Stadium matches could be key, given that the Seagulls chalked up 12 shut-outs and conceded just 14 goals in 23 home fixtures last season.

After losing 2-0 against City in their first home match, Chris Hughton’s men have conceded just once in the subsequent two, with Ryan earning a save point in two of his three home appearances.

However, his appeal hampered by the identically-priced Shane Duffy, who usurps Lewis Dunk as our preferred Brighton defender. Duffy is joint-top defenders for shots in the box (seven) and ranks second for CBI.

Eriksen would be my third Spurs player, his fixtures are pretty bad, and he's 9.7.

Still - should he be part of the wildcard?

      Needs context.

Do you have a pool and city mid?

Do you have Kane as one of the other two spurs players?

City mid yes, Pool mid no (Manchester United fan, not gonna wildcard in one just before that match).

        Kane and Davies.

          Agreed.

Future plans is getting in a pool mid - whichever seems better of the three - after the first couple of games, in for whichever of Hazard or Eriksen I choose (or Sterling, if he misfires).

The team will have a playing back four of Azpi, Kola, Bavies and Maguire

I think a pool and a city mid are great options going forward. Hence if he doesn't have one of them I'd probably go for those over eriksen.

Especially if he has Kane, in which case spending over a fifth of his budget on one team might be too much in my opinion

Am I the only person out there not considering losing lukaku just yet?

Seems slightly crazy to me to lose a player who is absolutely nailed, playing for a potential title contender and in great form.

Who knows what will happen, maybe things will change very quickly, but right now he's still a no brainier to me, fixtures or not.

    Thoughts?

It's simply a case of needing to choose two of the premium strikers. Kane's nailed for me, and Jesus seems (seemed, at least) like a better choice right now

        Hmm. Potentially.

I've gone with sterling in mid as my city punt. Think he offers great potential value, and at 7.9m I don't mind so much if his minutes get cut.

I guess the two equivalent pairings would be lukaku and city mid vs Jesus and mkhi right?

Yes but on a WC it's a chance to take full advantage of the fixtures. I'm not going to captain Kaku and Jesus is potentially more explosive and should at least match Kaku for cheaper. I'll bring him back before his fixtures turn good again and hopefully will have gained some points on the Kaku and United lovers who have started so well thanks to Uniteds great start

Yeah fair point on the captain thing.

I feel he is sort of this seasons costa. Never more than 10 points, never massively explosive but good for a goal in any game. Ticks along and gets you a nice score over a number of games

        1. Pep says
          • 8 Years

More potential than Costa but Lukaku depends alot on his team mates creating chances for him. They aren't gonna be playing very offensively against the top teams and therefore won't create as many chances.

After gw11 he's straight back in but I'm not worried about not owning him until then. And that's the key part, if I'm not worried about not having him and I'm not going to captain him, then he is surplus to requirements for next month

My thoughts on this is that one could make good arguments for both cases, to have him you will have a captaincy option almost every week, you will play with safety in the sense of ownership, and a secure starter who will score aplenty in a team, as you say, will be title contenders. Playing for safety which is not meant in a derogatory way, but it is what it is.
Having Lukaku will affect your team as whole and that´s where counterarguments lies imo. For one thing, you prob want Kane in there as well and that leaves you with a captain choice almost every week, and if you then have a million or less expensive striker you could use them to strenghten your team elsewhere. It´s a calculated risk not to have him and one could also add, provides a little more balanced team.

My point boils down to the point that there is a lot of reasons both to have and not to have him, according to each players own tactical and teamstructural devices/strategies. What could work for one player doesn´t necessarily works for another.

I think it's just that for 11.8 you need that player to be more explosive rather than just ticking over and so far for me its the latter category that lukaku falls into so far this year

Tempted by 5 at the back on my WC. Spurs, Chelsea, United and City all look defensively solid, and that looks like a reliable source of points, more so than what you can get in midfield for the same price.

The argument of Cedric is that he is 0.5 cheaper than Bertie, which can make a difference elsewhere in your team. Sideways yes, but Southamptons fixtures is the same for Cedric as they are for Bertie-)

Valuewise not the greatest pick, but secure starter in a team that has 3 out of 4 at home and the away match is Brighton makes it hard to overlook

With Mustafi out looks like a good time to give Holding a chance in our FPL teams ahead of Kolasinac, Bellerin. At 4.7 and doubts over Koscielny surely in the near term he is nailed on for starts. The only worry would be a change in formation to a back 4 to dominate the midfield more but I don't see that happening.

people tend to look it as more of an options to grab cheaper players, but they seems to disregard the fact that the defence and the team as whole would be weakened. Having Kola now would be worriyng if both Kos and Mustafi not showing and they´d be reliant on Holding and Per M, so agree with you on this one

    Morning all.
I see a lot of wildcards having the out of form Vardy in their squads. Great fixtures ahead but are we not worried about his lack of form? Is Batshuayi not a better prospect for the short term to avoid bringing in Hazard who's hardly in brilliant form himself?

This Chuopo-Moting fella, is he the real deal, or just typical FPL fools' gold?

He's a Stoke attacker, which are almost always bad. Admittedly, price, position and maybe stats back him, but ... Stoke attacker

Stoke attackers usually comes with a lot of doubts, so yes, but they also tend to well in a short period when fixtures is nice and that period could be now so i think that´s the reason why people picks him. He virtually plays like a striker and after the City match he has a nice streak of fixtures, and with any luck you get points as well as price rise and if not perfoming then well, then do what you think is the proper thing to do-)

Not many seem to be discussing about Morata...your thoughts please:
    1) Have chelsea released a statement/planning on releasing one soon with regard to his injury?
    2) Assuming he is only out 1 week, is it worth it to get rid of him?
    3) Assuming he is out for 2+ weeks, who best to replace with? Jesus?

Lots of A/B posts going around. Many are WC, but for those of us who are still paying for transfers, I think we can get more from these A/B posts by offering our own opinions when we ask and answer them.

We do all seem to suffer from a lack of common ground when discussing transfers. I was wondering if anyone has any specific guidelines they follow to ensure they are thinking rationally. Of course there are many factors to consider, but I think it may be useful for some people (me included) to consider very simple rules before posting their A/B questions and transfer proposals so that we can contextualise the proposed transfers with expected gains and why we expect those gains. That we, we can actually have discussions.

Here's one way to think simply about a single transfer. Take these three situations concerning the incoming player:

      A) Likely to gain 4+ points (over x amount of games)
      B) Likely to gain 1 - 4 points (over x amount of games)
      C) Unlikely to gain points

      With 1FT:
      Situation A: Make the transfer.
      Situation B: Save the transfer.
      Situation C: Save the transfer.

      With 2FTs:
      Situation A: Make the transfer.
      Situation B: Make the transfer.
Situation C: Look for alternative transfer / make transfer for other reasons (e.g., slightly more nailed player, opening up a slot for a team, price changes, banter, etc - of course you can use common sence to factor these back into the equation for situations A and B)

Is this a sensible way to approach transfers. Are there any obvious mistakes or anything you would change?

          1. entry point into new def.
          2. no one better at 4.0. he is the most likely to get some game time. vs others

since im on wildcard should i stick or just get a 3.9 and save that 0.1 and use later.

Is Bavies really a good option in a WC? Looking at fixtures and the potential return of Rose I am concerned, should I be?

Agree with this and it's likely he could be rested for the Palace game which would be a kick in the nuts.. Hard to drop him but it could be where the smart money is at

I have taken Davies out, he has had a good run. Rose is near to returning and Spurs 9/10 gws' are tough for CS. David Luiz for me or Otamendi

A Daniels + Cedric combo at 4.9 each would arguably be pretty nice
