Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Monday

Joe Allen’s injury is a turning point for Wales and an untimely blow for Stoke City. Elsewhere, a former Fantasy favourite comes to the fore to help Iceland make World Cup history, while Burnley assets continue their fine October form.

Here are the notes from a tense night of decisive World Cup qualifying action.

Allen joins international casualties…

Stoke City’s task of taming Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City attack may well have suffered a major blow following Joe Allen’s withdrawal for Wales last night.

Allen was an integral figure for the Welshmen against the Republic of Ireland prior to his departure – a turning point in the encounter which eventually saw the Irish prevail by a single goal.

Allen was withdrawn on 37 minutes following a head injury and will now be an early doubt for Stoke’s Gameweek 8 encounter.

Owned by just 2.3%, his relevance as a Fantasy asset is minimal. Nonetheless, his potential absence will surely be felt by Mark Hughes’ men, making their task of nulifiying City’s attacking threat all the more difficult.

A good break for Gylfi…

Helping your country to its first ever World Cup finals will have gone quite a large way towards persuading Gylfi Sigurdsson that this season might actually turn his way.

The challenge now is to bring his international form back with him to Merseyside.

The midfielder has endured a woeful start to his career with Everton, scoring a spectacular goal against Hajduk Split in the Europa League and…that’s it.

His goal and assist in a historic 2-0 win over Kosovo last night reminded us all of his talent and built on the signs of a personal revival hinted at in his most recent domestic outing.

Everton lost 1-0 at home to Burnley in Gameweek 7, but there was an improvement in both the team and Sigurdsson – the Icelander led the way with seven chances created and also had three shots on goal.

The Toffees still haven’t been revived following a cruel opening schedule, in which they played both Manchester sides, Spurs and Chelsea over four brutal Gameweeks.

But aside from a Gameweek 9 visit by Arsenal, the fixtures now fall favourably until the Merseyside derby on December 10.

Sigurdsson’s struggles, however, have reduced him to the role of a 3.2%-owned disappointment who has lost close to half of his managers, and 0.3 of value, since the season kick-off.

…and Burnley assets as well

Sigurdsson set up Iceland’s clinching goal last night, scored by Burnley’s Johann Berg Gudmondsson – his second strike of the international break.

The Clarets midfielder remains a fringe Fantasy option, though his Burnley team-mates also maintained positive form.

Jeff Hendrick set up the Republic of Ireland’s winner, from West Brom’s James McClean, that broke Welsh hearts in Cardiff, while team-mate Stephen Ward earned back-to-back clean sheets and an assist over the two matches for Martin O’Neill’s side.

Ward, with 8.1% ownership, is the most popular Burnley player in FPL, and only Spurs’ Ben Davies has enjoyed more transfers-in among defenders than his 106,000+ ahead of Gameweek 8.

Sean Dyche’s side enjoy favourable fixtures through to Gameweek 18, with a trip to Man City and a visit from Arsenal the only two sticking points. Beaten just once all season, confidence in his squad remains high ahead of West Ham’s Gameweek 8 visit.

Elsewhere…

The showdown in Cardiff featured a number of other Premier League players.

For the hosts were Wayne Hennessey, Ashley Williams, Spurs defender Davies and Aaron Ramsey, who all played the full match, while Hal Robson-Kanu was given 71 minutes before being replaced by Sam Vokes, and Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn was brought on after 65 minutes for Leicester City’s Andy King.

Shane Duffy and Ciaran Clark joined the aforementioned Burnley trio and McClean in playing 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland, while Bournemouth’s Harry Arter was subbed off after 77 minutes.

A Marko Arnautovic corner set up Austria’s winner in Moldova.

The West Ham midfielder enjoyed a fine international break, also scoring in his country’s 3-2 win over Serbia last week.

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic provided an assist as the Serbians beat Georgia 1-0 to win Group D ahead of the Irish.

He played 77 minutes before being replaced by Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic. Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic lasted the full 90 and Southampton’s Dusan Tadic played until the 89-minute mark.

Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren overcame back and Achilles problems to turn out for 90 minutes for Croatia in their 2-0 win over Ukraine.

The centre-back is reportedly forced to take painkillers to get through matches and was omitted from Croatia’s previous qualifier against Finland.

He now looks well placed to form his regular central defensive partnership with Joel Matip against Manchester United on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp’s other alternative – Ragnar Klavan – is due in action tonight for Estonia against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Matteo Darmian could well be facing Liverpool in the United backline. He started Italy’s 1-0 win in Albania before being replaced by Chelsea’s Davide Zappacosta after 61 minutes. That could be significant given that Darmian is likely to be in Jose Mourinho’s plans for Saturday’s early kick-off at Anfield.

Regular right-back Antonio Valencia started against Crystal Palace last time out having been billed as a fitness doubt by Mourinho. The Ecuadorian may well be considered a risk by the United manager given that he is returning via a long-haul flight following his clash with Argentina in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini’s international break consisted of an 89th-minute substitute appearance last night.

The Italians finished as runners-up in Group G to Spain, who rang the changes in a 1-0 win in Israel.

Nacho Monreal, César Azpilicueta and Pedro were given their first starts of the October break, with the latter replaced after 76 minutes.

Man United keeper David de Gea was on the bench, while Man City playmaker David Silva missed the match through suspension, surely making his starting role against Stoke City all the more likely.

Finally, Brighton striker Tomer Hemed, currently serving a three-match domestic ban, played the full 90 minutes for Israel.

      Hello

Looking alright - like that you've got the spread of options these. I'd happily have that side for the next few weeks - though maybe worth having Fabianski over Ryan, or if it were me I'd just play Elliot in every game and save myself the 0.5.

Anyway - walk away from your PC til after the press conferences now

Already made my 1FT this week getting someone in for Mustafi.
However, with Kane and Lukaku up top I am tempted given the fixtures to take a -4 on Luk>Jesus
Already have Silva but i reckon jesus will net me more across the next 3/4 GWs?

Thoughts? Worth the hit this week?

i'd stick with Lukaku for the moment, at least wait for friday pressers and Jesus to play - i like Jesus but he hasn't yet shown the form of the end of last season and could be tired from South America trip, plus you just don't know what Pep might do

4 goals 1 assists in 6 games is pretty good form, especially when you take his lack of minutes into account.

yep fair point, guess i'm just not quite confident in him (or specifically Pep's plans) as yet, tbf if Kaku was crooked reckon Jesus would be first on the list as replacement, but i'd still be slightly wary of Pep's plans and jesus being knackered from IB

Was going to say exactly this. For a guy that has only done only one 90 min game, and 3 under 65mins - his record of points is just fine.
I get the points though on the travel and the need for Lukaku to blank and Jesus to score etc to start balancing out.
Also, being a Liverpool fan i know all too well how suspect the defense is.

Maybe some more consideration and a possible Friday decision. It's not a black n white decision either way.

Definitely not! Jesus is coming back from Brazil having played 90 mins already with another 90 probably to be played on Wednesday night. City also have Napoli midweek. He's their only fit striker. Not saying he won't play, but there's too much of a risk - and Kaku is 100% nailed. Log off FPL I think!

Wait. You'll need lukaku not to score and Jesus to score 2 to be worth while. Be prepared though if you don't transfer lukaku this week, bar an injury, your not going to transfer him out at home to HUD!

If it's for an FT, might be worth considering. If for a hit, no.

On Kola: 3 shots and 5 chances created over the last 4 GWs, might well be one worth keeping hold of to be honest, could be an explosion imminent. wat eve SWA all winnable matches for us, and we do actually play better away from home when we don't have the weight of expectation on our shoulders

I do agree with all of this btw - I'm not sure it's worth the FT, tho, given Kola's stats. Even if Sanchez is inhibiting him a little bit, he's still far more attacking than most.

I have Bellerin as well, and am looking to keep for the next 3 when I will shift to whoever is in vogue in the meta at that point 😀

I decided to get Bellerin in for Mendy last week and double up on ARS WBs until after the SWA game. A bit radical but it worked out well last week so can't complain. I should stick with my plan but need willpower!

Thoughts on this for a WC? I've never seriously thought about such a balanced squad before, usually just pile funds on the 11 and have a cruddy bench

    Elliot - 4.5 keeper
    Azpi - Davies - Jones - Stones - Cedric
    Mane - Sterling - Fabregas - Richarlison - RLC
    Jesus - Kane - Joselu

    0.5 ITB.

This team gives the option of any formation. Over the next few weeks Cedric and Joselu could be downgraded, Sterling/Fabregas upgraded.

What's missing here? Arsenal players and Utd attackers , but are any really needed given fixtures and Arsenalishness?

I do like it, is it the extra funds to Maguire worth it over morgan?

Any feedback on this WC lot?

    Ederson, Elliot
    Mee, Fernandez, Duffy, Cederic, Luiz
    Coutinho, Sterling, Richarlison, RLC, Carroll
    Luk, Jesus, Kane

G2g? Or is it too unbalanced?

    Cheers

I like the Ederson shout. Personally I would (and am) downgrading Lukaku to Morata (or Vardy as placeholder) to strengthen the defence.

Yeah true but I don't dare to replace Lukaku because of his ownership..

Top heavy but it's solid, I'd be tempted to drop Ederson to a 4.5 gk to rotate with Elliot and upgrade a defender with the extra million, Cedric to otamendi

Don't want to miss out on the Southampton fixtures so it's hard to fit City and Southampton in

      Wow. Toss a coin.
Marginally A actually - Azpi absolutely nailed, tho I suspect the assists will dry up, and Richarlison bossing it

Is Fellaini still the best WC option at that price or is it mad to bring in an injured player?

Sounds like it it's nothing too serious.

    RLC a better shout maybe?

RLC is also ineligible, but it is mad to have an injured player because you just don't know how long they'll be out for. Remember Rose last season was only meant to be out for a week or two...

        Great point about Rose! Thanks.

Not bothered about RLC this week as it would be part of a wildcard.

        But thank you!

No worries - I'm on RLC as well, think he'll come good long term, and am flying benchless this week with Chalobah and Mbemba also out of the picture for their respective teams. Ahhh!
