International Scout Notes – Monday

Joe Allen’s injury is a turning point for Wales and an untimely blow for Stoke City. Elsewhere, a former Fantasy favourite comes to the fore to help Iceland make World Cup history, while Burnley assets continue their fine October form.

Here are the notes from a tense night of decisive World Cup qualifying action.

Allen joins international casualties…

Stoke City’s task of taming Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City attack may well have suffered a major blow following Joe Allen’s withdrawal for Wales last night.

Allen was an integral figure for the Welshmen against the Republic of Ireland prior to his departure – a turning point in the encounter which eventually saw the Irish prevail by a single goal.

Allen was withdrawn on 37 minutes following a head injury and will now be an early doubt for Stoke’s Gameweek 8 encounter.

Owned by just 2.3%, his relevance as a Fantasy asset is minimal. Nonetheless, his potential absence will surely be felt by Mark Hughes’ men, making their task of nulifiying City’s attacking threat all the more difficult.

A good break for Gylfi…

Helping your country to its first ever World Cup finals will have gone quite a large way towards persuading Gylfi Sigurdsson that this season might actually turn his way.

The challenge now is to bring his international form back with him to Merseyside.

The midfielder has endured a woeful start to his career with Everton, scoring a spectacular goal against Hajduk Split in the Europa League and…that’s it.

His goal and assist in a historic 2-0 win over Kosovo last night reminded us all of his talent and built on the signs of a personal revival hinted at in his most recent domestic outing.

Everton lost 1-0 at home to Burnley in Gameweek 7, but there was an improvement in both the team and Sigurdsson – the Icelander led the way with seven chances created and also had three shots on goal.

The Toffees still haven’t been revived following a cruel opening schedule, in which they played both Manchester sides, Spurs and Chelsea over four brutal Gameweeks.

But aside from a Gameweek 9 visit by Arsenal, the fixtures now fall favourably until the Merseyside derby on December 10.

Sigurdsson’s struggles, however, have reduced him to the role of a 3.2%-owned disappointment who has lost close to half of his managers, and 0.3 of value, since the season kick-off.

…and Burnley assets as well

Sigurdsson set up Iceland’s clinching goal last night, scored by Burnley’s Johann Berg Gudmondsson – his second strike of the international break.

The Clarets midfielder remains a fringe Fantasy option, though his Burnley team-mates also maintained positive form.

Jeff Hendrick set up the Republic of Ireland’s winner, from West Brom’s James McClean, that broke Welsh hearts in Cardiff, while team-mate Stephen Ward earned back-to-back clean sheets and an assist over the two matches for Martin O’Neill’s side.

Ward, with 8.1% ownership, is the most popular Burnley player in FPL, and only Spurs’ Ben Davies has enjoyed more transfers-in among defenders than his 106,000+ ahead of Gameweek 8.

Sean Dyche’s side enjoy favourable fixtures through to Gameweek 18, with a trip to Man City and a visit from Arsenal the only two sticking points. Beaten just once all season, confidence in his squad remains high ahead of West Ham’s Gameweek 8 visit.

Elsewhere…

The showdown in Cardiff featured a number of other Premier League players.

For the hosts were Wayne Hennessey, Ashley Williams, Spurs defender Davies and Aaron Ramsey, who all played the full match, while Hal Robson-Kanu was given 71 minutes before being replaced by Sam Vokes, and Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn was brought on after 65 minutes for Leicester City’s Andy King.

Shane Duffy and Ciaran Clark joined the aforementioned Burnley trio and McClean in playing 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland, while Bournemouth’s Harry Arter was subbed off after 77 minutes.

A Marko Arnautovic corner set up Austria’s winner in Moldova.

The West Ham midfielder enjoyed a fine international break, also scoring in his country’s 3-2 win over Serbia last week.

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic provided an assist as the Serbians beat Georgia 1-0 to win Group D ahead of the Irish.

He played 77 minutes before being replaced by Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic. Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic lasted the full 90 and Southampton’s Dusan Tadic played until the 89-minute mark.

Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren overcame back and Achilles problems to turn out for 90 minutes for Croatia in their 2-0 win over Ukraine.

The centre-back is reportedly forced to take painkillers to get through matches and was omitted from Croatia’s previous qualifier against Finland.

He now looks well placed to form his regular central defensive partnership with Joel Matip against Manchester United on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp’s other alternative – Ragnar Klavan – is due in action tonight for Estonia against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Matteo Darmian could well be facing Liverpool in the United backline. He started Italy’s 1-0 win in Albania before being replaced by Chelsea’s Davide Zappacosta after 61 minutes. That could be significant given that Darmian is likely to be in Jose Mourinho’s plans for Saturday’s early kick-off at Anfield.

Regular right-back Antonio Valencia started against Crystal Palace last time out having been billed as a fitness doubt by Mourinho. The Ecuadorian may well be considered a risk by the United manager given that he is returning via a long-haul flight following his clash with Argentina in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini’s international break consisted of an 89th-minute substitute appearance last night.

The Italians finished as runners-up in Group G to Spain, who rang the changes in a 1-0 win in Israel.

Nacho Monreal, César Azpilicueta and Pedro were given their first starts of the October break, with the latter replaced after 76 minutes.

Man United keeper David de Gea was on the bench, while Man City playmaker David Silva missed the match through suspension, surely making his starting role against Stoke City all the more likely.

Finally, Brighton striker Tomer Hemed, currently serving a three-match domestic ban, played the full 90 minutes for Israel.

Ha yes the delusion of grandeur is always an interesting one. I'm sure I will write one on this eventually - we tend to see a few people on FFS who will be boasting about their amazing rank earlier on in the season who disappear by the end of it, who are a perfect fit for it!

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".

This sonnet works on so many levels, and isn't just about the delusion of grandeur - it can also be interpreted as the permanence of spirit, note how the "passions" of the sculptor "still yet survive" even if stamped on the feet of the deposed king. Is there something here about how work of those lesser in the pyramid - symbolised through the feet surviving the decay - survive despite the visage of Ozymandias being claimed by the desert?

There's also a few different layers of perspective going on which moderate the teller of the story (it's polyphonic) - you have the main interlocutor, who meets the traveller, who tells the story, who then reads from the plaque itself (feasibly, the voice of Ozymandias). It's almost postmodern in that fashion (think Don Delillo: picture of a picture of a barn) and serves to further distance us from the speaker.

It's also worth reading Horace Smith's poem on Ozymandias and comparing the two as well...

Sorry, what was this about? The English lit grad in me took over 😉

In that case, you might want to note that, both the structure - very unusual, even for somebody as high as PBS 😉 , with three interlocking lines, the middle rhyming with Kings, in the final six, indicate quite clearly that it was the personality of the ruler, stamped on the face - visage - not the feet, no matter how high and mighty in life, was now tumbleweed in death. A common theme with PBS, the main subject of:

                        'Rise like Lions after slumber
                        In unvanquishable number -
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you -
Ye are many - they are few.'

                        which also has, early on:

I met Murder on the way -
He had a mask like Castlereagh -
                        Very smooth he looked, yet grim;
                        Seven blood-hounds followed him:

                        and:

                        And he wore a kingly crown;
                        And in his grasp a sceptre shone;
On his brow this mark I saw -
'I AM GOD, AND KING, AND LAW!'

All of them torn down by the multitude.

The theme of Labour's election campaign too:

"For the many, not the few". 😀

Ha yeah, I love Dunning Kruger, fascinating psychological phenomenon.

The actual initial paper they wrote had the subtitle "how difficulties in recognising one's own incompetence lead to inflated self-assessments" - we can all think of someone we know who falls prey to this effect 🙂

There are a lot of nice comparisons with Donald Trump these days out there, but you can also apply it to anybody - as I said above, for example the people in FFS and more widely in the FPL community who are piping up when they're doing well but disappear once things go pear shaped!

        Suuuuuuuuup

I'd go for the 4.0 keeper combo and try to get a better defender if I could, especially in the context of what will be a mad December lots of gameweeks - lots of merit in having the 4.5/4.4 BUR/STK combo I'm seeing as you'll probably need your bench around that. Keeper far more likely to play every game

People seem to think that Liverpool is so poor in defense. I´m not doing an apology for their defense, but if people take a look at the numbers they only conceded 1 goal at home so it has to be nuanced a little bit i think. Away they seems to let in goals aplenty, but home it looks better. Not the best teas that have been to Anfield just yet, but this is not only a trend this year but is something continued from last season. I am aware of that it is Burnley, Palace and Arsenal we´re talking about so not the best teams there is. Just making a note there

Definitely a top half defence on em. Lots of worse teams. It's just the hilarious nature of some of the goals but that comes down to team tactics. Won't concede that many chances but when they do they are very exposed.

Liverpool’s defence is a strange one - the stats show that they don’t actually give up that many chances or shots on goal but when they do they’re big chances so they get punished almost every time. If they can reduce the number of big chances they’re giving up then they might be worth investment but I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole right now.

not touching any of their defenders, that´s a given. My point was rather that when people asessing Liverpool they do tend to be unnuanced, and if one would like, could be something to ponder about given that two of the leagues best strikers Lukaku and Kane meets them, Lukaku away and Kane at home respectively. Statisticalwise it seems like Lukaku will struggle and Kane would have better chances, but ofc just a thought passed over to the folks in this forum-)

At home it does seems like they are pretty decent, away is horrible. Point beeing that when you asess attacking players vs Liverpool one must not overlook the factor of home or away, that´s all.

With this lot, my issue, clearly, is Morata..

    Foster/Elliott
    Bavies/ Monreal/ Jones/ Naughton/ Hunemeir
    Erikssen/ Silva/ Choupo/ Gross/ Carroll
    Lukaku/ Kane/ Morata

I have £0 and 1 FT. Got Morata for 10m... So do I

    a) Keep Morata for a week or two (can afford a 0.1 drop for nothing)
    b) Morata --- > Vardy
    c) Morata + Midfielder --- > Jesus + Midfilder
    d) Something better

    Thank you!

Roberto Martinez is playing Lukaku despite Belgium already going though to the finals. The guy had to have injections in his foot to face Palace. Lukaku needs rest can't believe he is going to play a week before facing Liverpool. Martinez already played Fellaini with a knock and now this, feeling very concerned as a United fan and Lukaku owner.

Yes, but if the fixture is a dead rubber, don't play people carrying injuries.

And national managers wonder why club managers are always finding excuses not to send their top players on international duty.

Obviously your week point is defence, are your other 2 mids 4.5 (playing regularly, or lower (not playing)? Concern would be injury/resting one of your defenders or Sterling.

The man city double mid is a hot topic at the moment. Silva seems to be involved in everything whereas Sterling has potential to have an awesome Oct, (Stoke are the highest for chances coded down the left...where does Sterling play!?).

If anything id get rid of Hazard. At that price you've got to be getting double figures off him. Currently at 3.5% ownership, even if that triples it means 1/10 people have him. Point being if he gets a hat trick not many are going to benefit. sterling at double that and likely to rise base on form, (5 goals already this season) and probably playing more advanced.

You could bring in Richarlison for Hazard and either a) sit on the money, if he blows up you can bring Hazard straight in or b) strengthen your defence. Id look at Bellerin/Monreal, over Walker, (Both favourable fixtures - but Man City in Champs League).

A lot to digest, but many (including myself) are in the same boat.

            I would go with Maguier
Leicester got a very nice run of fixtures now
            So my team would be

            Fab Elliot
Jones Cedric Maguier Ward ( Marriapa )
            Hazard Silva Sterling (RLC) (Carroll)
            Kane Jesus Vardy

Sterling and silva are for 2 weeks
Then i will do Sterling to Richalson
            Silva to Salah/Mane
And Jesus to Lukaku after 4 weeks
Also i would take a punt on haz
could be a great differential in coming weeks

Get rid of Mik for October. Use the money to strengthen your bench, Holding/Luiz/Azp as options. Usually a cash biased mid would get you the most points, but with Defenders and Forwards doing so well this year, I think such a rigid 4 in mid is not wise.

Fabs is a risk, Dobt Kante will be back in Oct, but if Luiz plays DM and then there Drinkwater to come back too.

Fellow 532 man and think it's looks great, would look even better if you lost Sanchez and put the money on to Richarlison, he's a good player but if you're only playing five attackers, everyone of them has to be a strong consistent one (IMO)

Just seen that the guy at the top of my ML has transferred out Lukaku > Kane (-4) to line up with Kane Jesus and Firmino front line.

I'm already on a WC and have been plotting dropping Kak for Jesus to free up funds to midfield and defence.

I'm currently 43pts back after his hit (was 98 behind two weeks ago!)

    Would you:

    A. Keep Lukaku and chuck out all previous WC drafts. Invest in Sane, Sterling and Otamendi (he has Jesus, Silva and Stones).

    B. Stick with the plan to dump Kak, bring in Jesus, Sterling etc.

Just play your game mate, get who you think will get you most points, you'll worry about your rivals later in the season. You definitely need some City Che players I would say, so go from there. 😉

      Good luck mate.

Ha a manager after my own heart - I always base my choices on my ML!

Depends how close you are and whether your other differentials aside from the big ticket ones you're referencing here will do the business if you match in a few places. Difficult balance to strike: you need to make sure you have differentials to gain on one hand without over-differentiating and seeing yourself lose out on points.

I'd be mightily tempted to stick to your plan, all in all - you have 31 gameweeks to go, the time for massively differentiating is not yet. But nice work reeling him in!

Jesus may get his minutes managed being the only forward for City

After coming back late from the last International Break, Jesus started but only played 56 minutes against Liverpool, he scored two goals.

doesn't matter what he does, you have to focus on gettting as many points as you can

😆 I guess because the previous plan was based on him owning Kak 😆

    Which is better

    a) Ward, Richarlison, Silva, Morata

    b) Ward, Choupo, Hazard, Vardy

Prefer A when Morata is fit. Sterling over Silva for me.

A I think once Morata is back. Have Vardy as a placeholder for now.

Bench Mooy, and look to sell soon. Far too deep to be a good FPL asset. Nice work if you got the goal from him early on
