Technical Area – The Man City Midfield

Through the first two months of the season, no side has scored more frequently than Manchester City.

In their second season under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage, City have averaged more than three goals per match to open this campaign and already look to be mounting the strongest title challenge on show.

With Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus as options in attack, we are blessed with two obvious routes to investment. However, reading Pep Guardiola’s intentions with the pair remains a test, made all the more difficult by the news of Aguero’s return to light training following his rib injury.

Just as Gabriel Jesus seemed cemented in the central attacking role, suddenly Aguero’s return seems more imminent, casting further doubts on the likely minutes of the pair over forthcoming Gameweeks.

So, instead, our attentions are drawn to City’s midfield in an effort to achieve coverage of this potent attacking unit while we wait for the striker situation to resolve.

In this article, we’ll be running the rule over three mid-priced Manchester City midfield options – David Silva, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling – alongside the more expensive Kevin De Bruyne, in an effort to ascertain where best to seek value from this side over the coming Gameweeks.

If you have a spare 1.5m burning a hole in your pocket & no other way to spend it... otherwise Silva looks like he will match KDB point for point for 8.5

Is a good option if you have the funds.

My only issue is that Silva is doing pretty well in the City midfield and costs quite a bit less.

But if Jesus is tired and does get rested, which is possible after playing as much as he has then KDB is the man most likely to be false 9.

KDB is a good option provided you have to have patient with him. He is not aguero but will bring in points in the long run. I have had him since GW 2 and have not lost faith even when he was being overshadowed by silva

Hmmo the options and considering Man U's solid defence then B.

But Salah could still score against them it is just less likely than Sterling scoring given his form

what would u do with 1FT? 1.3 ITB

im thinking there is a transfer needed at the back, playing 4 defenders until hemed is back:

    Kolasinac Jones Bavies Naughton

    Alli Salah Sterling Moting

    Lukaku Kane

    bench: Carrol, hemed,3.9 def

i can do alli to hazard next week but with united fixtures and jones being injury prone i need a solid pick for next 4 week espeically with a non playing 5th defender and suspended 3rd striker . maybe a switch to cedric?

        1. Holmes

Not a bad move... If Hazard is your main target, then Jones to Cedric makes sense.

I was considering the flexibility/possibility of Alli and Hemed to someone and someone

if i was planning on upgrading hemed then yeah that would make perfect sense but i guess it depends on morata. if he returns i might consider downgrading alli. maybe not a bad option to save the transfer to keep options open. thanks for feedback

It is a concern but Wij half solves a problem with Klopp. He obviously likes him and when Mane was out at the end of last year Wij was the player to get forward. Better defensively, which is needed at Pool.

Guys, can you help me settle a debate in having with a mate at work.

Fixtures are swinging now so feels like it's all change for squads.

Who do you think is better value?

Hazard at 10.5 with goals, assists and his attraction to bonus points or

Lukaku at 11.8 for his goals.

Assuming Kane will be the captain of choice now.

    1. Eze Really?

For me Hazard, but at 10.5 still a bit of a risk.

      • 7 Years

Lukaku for his reliable captaincy vs anyone outside the top 6. Hazard doesn't fill you with the same level of confidence that you'll get returns if you give him the armband. Imo a good captain is invaluable

      1. We Will Klopp you
        • 7 Years

          • 7 Years
          6 years, 6 months ago

But if we're talking value with no captaincy I'd still say Lukaku, you know if you have him in easy fixtures you'll get points 9/10 times, can't say the same with hazard

To be fair in previous seasons Hazard has been a good captain option at times.

But it goes against what he is asking as he wants you to assume Kane will always be his captain so just disregard that aspect

Remains to be seen as Hazard has only had limited involvement thus far. Chelsea fixtures look infinitely more mineable for points, with Hazard's appeal only increased through Morata's absence.

That said, if Utd do grab the odd goal over the coming fixtures (possibly more), big Romelu is likely to be involved.

Leaning towards Hazard for value, despite his suppressed points at this stage in the season.

In terms of straight value, Hazard at 10.5m, still always gets to 200 points plus, should get around the same as Lukaku

Not that simple really, there are midfielders who are better value than hazard and could score similar points to him, you'd be bringing him in at their expense and then the cheaper forward you bring in May score less points than the cheaper midfielder

Could be either tbh. Hazard has scored an awful lot of FPL points in his time at Chelsea significantly more than either Lukaku or Zlatan last season

But it is difficult to compare last seasons united to this seasons as they do seem significantly more attacking

      1. We Will Klopp you

    Morning!

    Elliot
    Cedric/Bavies/Jones
    Salah/Miki*/Ritchie/TC
    Kane(c)/Kaku/Jesus

    Foster/Lowe/Mbemba/Chalo

Would you do Miki to Sterling-4?
And Lowe to Luiz next week to play 443?
    Any better ideas? 1.2ITB now

Probably the most common midfield tfr if you don't have Silva already. I have pondered it for 12 days. Now Jesus played full 90, it will be even more common and my probable ft.

    Salah - Fabregas??
Salah/Couts will come back in for Huddersfield

      Too much risk, IMO.
Salah can easily score against even tough opponents, and you can be either outpriced or have other issues to sort by the time of Hud game....Fab also rotation risk...

Surely the reward outweighs the risk when getting Jesus and Sterling in for free for Morata and Mhki?

I still think just Morata to Jesus is enough Dingo and roll that FT

Na not that mate, I have Sterling myself also Mkhi for full disclosure. I just don't think getting rid of Mkhi is the way to go.

I think he could easily get something in the next two and might be viable for the long term, time will tell and I might be wrong but that's my thought process around it. Sterling I got because I couldn't afford Silva and it remains to be seen if it will turn out any good.

Jesus played lots of international football. Midweek UCL game next week. Either he is benched or he starts and gets 60.

On paper its great. But losing mhki vs a pool now without mane might be a bit touchie.

Pools attack blunted and a defense who cant def to save thier lives.

      Jesus in for sure
Sterling is an insurance policy if jesus doesnt start or even benched after a comfortable lead. Then sterling will be pushed in a central role. Thats how i see it. I drop fab for ster for this reason i might get punished...

Kane seems fairly fixture proof but look at hi upcoming fixtures. ATM Hazard seems a viable captain alternative?

It is a wait and see.
Who would you think is a captain alternative to Kane over the next 5 weeks?

Agreed that captaining Kane would be difficult in some of the next 5 GW's. Hazard not the answer though imo. Kun if back could be the ideal solution.

Hazard was a great option for home games when he has fully fit. He hasnt scored yet in PL. I have him in FPL but cant captain him over Kane at the moment who just cant stop scoring. Even when Spurs face LIV or MUN, can see Kane scoring vs all of them. On the other hand, Hazard is a midfielder so his extra points for goals and cs should be taken into account. Not a bad choice but would wait for 2-3 good games from Hazard before captaining him. Plus his low ownership makes him a nice differential even without captaincy.

I think this choice (Kane Haz C) will be a definitive decision in FPL.

The reliability they bring makes it worth it, a good captains haul gets you half or close to half of the total you need for a good gameweek

A, playing Watford and there is uncertainty hanging over Jesus' head due to city's upcoming cl game vs Roma and him playing so much over the ib. Definitely wouldn't dos it for a hit

    Hazard, Silva, Richarlison
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

    Elliot, Chuopo-Moting, Carroll, Mbemba

Also considered Monreal / Danilo -> Cedric, and use the funds to upgrade Mbemba. But this would mean a lot of cash benched.
