The Watchlist Updated – Midfielders

After analysing our preferred Watchlist picks for goalkeepers and defenders, we now check out the midfielders.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These rankings offer a window into our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Raheem Sterling (7.9) and David Silva (8.5) claim the top two spots as relatively kindly priced routes into the swashbuckling Man City attack.

Sergio Aguero’s injury absence boosts both options but, in particular, that of Sterling. He’s the leading midfielder for goals, having netted five times in his last five league outings.

Crucially, Sterling has started each of the last four he has been available for and played 90 minutes on three of those occasions. He’s also been benched in both Champions League ties.

Over their respective last four matches, Sterling has produced more shots in the box (14) than any Man City midfielder yet boasts a mere 6.1% ownership. That makes him an intriguing differential ahead of a kind upcoming schedule (STK BUR wba ARS lei hud).

Silva appears the more secure option.

Yet to score this season, he’s still fired a reasonable nine efforts in the box (compared with Kevin De Bruyne’s two).

Silva is second only to the Belgian for key passes (23 to 24), but leads the way for big chances created, with six. As a result, he is also the number one midfielder for assists (six), earning two bonus points on four occasions already. Sterling, by comparison, has a single bonus point to his name.

The choice of the two is a classic dilemma. Sterling is clearly the more explosive with potentially, the greater upside. However, the perception is that Silva is a more studied, long-term investment. Pairing both, even without Aguero’s firepower to feed, is also a very viable tactic given their short-term fixtures.

Despite the return to action of Philippe Coutinho, Mohamed Salah remains our go-to Liverpool option.

The Egyptian is ranked as the top midfielder for both shots in the box and efforts on target – indeed, only Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku have bettered his tallies for those metrics.

Four goals and two assists have helped him to 34.1% ownership – more than any other midfielder – though back-to-back encounters with Man United and Spurs dent his short-term appeal before the schedule turns again from Gameweek 10.

Coutinho is one to monitor, though. Since returning to the teamsheet in Gameweek 5, he’s the number one midfielder for both shots and key passes, racking up 25 points over that short spell.

From Gameweek 10 onwards, the Reds face Huddersfield, West Ham, Southampton, Stoke, Brighton, Everton, West Brom and Bournemouth in eight of their next nine.

Spurs continue to supply us with a pair of big-hitters in the shape of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen ahead of some mixed upcoming fixtures.

Arguably, though, their appeal suffers from the captaincy potential of Harry Kane and the value offered by Ben Davies at the back as alternative routes into Mauricio Pochettino’s XI.

Home clashes with Bournemouth, Palace and West Brom in the next six look very promising, yet clashes against Liverpool, Man United and Arsenal could persuade many to look elsewhere for their premium short-term midfielders.

Alli has yet to produce the expected goal returns, while Eriksen seems to gradually surrender his monopoly on set-pieces to the aforementioned Davies. Both need to impress against Bournemouth in Gameweek 8 to keep their stock and ownership levels stable.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is ready to step in for the Spurs pair. His return to action for the Blues coincides with a very favourable long-term schedule.

Afforded a central role behind Alvaro Morata in recent outings, the Belgian could now emerge as our go-to route into the champions’ attack as they prepare to face just two of last season’s top six in the next 14 Gameweeks.

Hazard’s spot-kick duties, allied with the uncertainty over Morata’s hamstring injury, indicates that his ownership level of 3.5% could soar over the ensuing matches.

Lower down the price brackets, Stoke City’s Eric Choupo-Moting and Watford wide man Richarlison are our clear favourites among the budget options.

Both boast the statistics to make a mockery of their price tags and are ready-made differentials, with backing around the 6% mark.

The pair are level on 18 efforts inside the box apiece – only Salah (21) has managed more – while their tallies of 24 and 23 shots on goal are among the top three midfielders.

Priced at a mere 5.6, Choupo-Moting has two goals and an assist to his name. A trip to Man City will keep him from most managers’ radars, but following that, he has six favourable matches (BOU wat LEI bha cry SWA) to boast his points output.

Coming in at 6.1, Richarlison has already served up three goals and two assists to sit fifth in the midfield standings.

Back-to-back clashes with Arsenal and Chelsea precede a kind short-term run (STO eve WHU new) that hands him the chance to maintain early-season momentum.

It will take a substantially bigger investment to buy into Alexis Sanchez’s improving form.

His eight efforts and six key passes against Brighton harvested just a single assist for, but with a goal for Chile over the international break, he’s edging back to his brilliant best. However, an 11.9 price tag remains very prohibitive – perhaps until that first double-figure score hits home.

With mixed fixtures for Arsenal (wat eve SWA mci TOT bur), Aaron Ramsey remains just ahead of the South American due to his far kinder price tag.

The Welshman, at 7.1, is second only to Salah for big chances (four to seven) among midfielders. His total of 15 efforts on goal is just one behind Alexandre Lacazette for the Gunners’ first seven fixtures.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s allure suffers a blow as Man United prepare to face Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea over the next four Gameweeks.

With just one goal – and no assists – in his last four, the Armenian’s influence seems to be on the wane.

Lower down our ladder, Brighton’s Pascal Gross remains a factor, boosted by more favourable short-term fixtures.

The German retreated into a deeper role at Arsenal in Gameweek 7, as Chris Hughton trialled a three-man attack. That could limit Gross’ attacking potential, although, in truth, a dominance of set-piece duties remains integral to his appeal. That should remain over forthcoming fixtures and could bear fruit with Everton, Southampton and Stoke the next three due at the Amex Stadium.

I've chased down a 98 pt deficit to 43 pts in the last two weeks.
Played my WC this week as I didn't have any City or Chelsea cover going into the fixture shift.
Thoughts on WC draft below appreciated - obviously I want to continue to chase down that lead...

    ML rival:

    Foster Myhill
    DAVIES STONES Kolasinac Jones Alexander-Arnold
    ERIKSEN Silva Mooy Atsu CARROLL
    KANE JESUS Firmino

    My draft WC:

    Pope Elliot
    DAVIES STONES Azpilicueta Ward Wimmer
    ERIKSEN Hazard Sterling Loftus-Cheek CARROLL
    KANE JESUS Calvert-Lewin

(Flexibility to bring in a Liverpool mid in a couple of weeks. I'm currently protecting value of Lukaku, Silva, Coutinho and Jones before making any further changes).

Not sure on Calvert-Lewin as a pick to be honest, would probably consider another 3rd striker (Abraham, Joselu) otherwise I think it's good.

I sold him at the beginning of the international break because I wanted Kane Morata and Jesus as a front 3 but then that obviously backfired and now I can't handle losing 0.2 to bring him back in. So will brave it through the tough United fixtures and reassess

Not sure about the triple up on Spurs but pound for pound Eriksen looks better than other options you could have there, midfield looking preeetty atrocious at the mo. I would be tempted to take the punt and try to fit Haz in to be honest if you can - perhaps via Silva -> Sterling and Fab -> 4.0 and playign Elliot every week (but I love the cut cost gk)

Doos ... is there something amis with the table? Surprised Richarlison name not there despite 18 shots in the box. I know you've only done it for two gameweeks but when I altered your settings to cover the whole season Richarlison's name still didn't appear.

Richarlison with 2 poor fixtures. Can't bench him this week since CM plays City away and RLC is ineligible to play. I feel like it's jumping on a bandwagon for the bandwagon's sake. I suppose you could play RLC next week if he's fit, or get another poor fixture out of Richarlison, but it doesn't seem like the best way to find value out there at the moment, especially given that the template changes every week near the beginning of the season.

Yeah, "almost" being the operative word here! Ritchie should be fine, wait for the pressers

Be tempted to lose Firmino if you can pop Vardy in given the international travel and a decent game for Vardy next, but that again is a bit 50/50.

Wait til pressers, see if there are any issues that come out of them

I have a real dilemma about bringing in the sterling chap. Lining him up on my WC doesn't look right.
Here are the plus sides for getting in the kid.
his up coming fixtures are nice and friendly.
although he doesn't hog the limelight he isn't shy about being selfish and taking shots.
He could be the cure to limited midfield funds and should even put money in the bank.
since aguero injury his new job seems to be almost up front with jesus moving wide, although in these modern times I think all of city could play that role.
His potential for explosion could be a nice pay day on less well informed ML rivals which could put me on easy street for the cash.
so going by this its sterling and jesus for city, lights on , away we go.
    now the negatives
the circus that is peps rotation policy.
he is so unpredictable he could make a right Charlie out of the owners
the decision should just be black and white but it has so many grey areas.

I was on richalson instead of sterling and walker instead of maguier
but then i checked maguier's stats and indeed he is killing it
2 assists 1 goal and with good run of fixtures he can come good
i am expecting 10-15 pts from my defence at max in 2 weeks

I love Maguire, haven't found a way to fit him in my current squad as yet but I think he's superb, and he's on my watchlist. Had him last season when he was at Hull and he bought in a fair few points for me 🙂 Only caveat I can see is Leicester's form and the management of Shakespeare, which I'm still not convinced about. It had a short term bounce but their results this season haven't been great.

Shkodran Mustafi ruled out of Arsenal's meeting with Watford through hamstring injury

Germany's medical team were concerned Mustafi would be a doubt for their next international break, Sky Sports News understands, which includes a friendly against England at Wembley on November 10 but are waiting for updates from Arsenal over the next few days.

Germany boss Joachim Loew said following the fixture: "It doesn't look good, it looks like he had torn a ligament. We're waiting for a full diagnosis, but it looks like he will be out for a while."

Gomez looks good at CB for England U21s, any chance he partners Matip and TAA becomes first choice RB? I have TAA and they have some decent fixtures coming up so would keep if he is a starter, otherwise I'm sidewinding Moreno in.

I very much doubt that. Why are you fixated on having a Liverpool defender when they are so dreadful in defence? I feel there is better value for their price in other teams defences 🙂 2 really tough fixtures next too.

It's looking ropey isn't it? Bellerin will get another week obviously for me, but he could easily wind up out ahead of Everton if we can't keep Watford out. We do do ok backs against the wall and away from the Emirates, tho, so I wouldn't panic too much yet. Holding also coming along nicely

Ah yer Holding. Time to shine.

        1. Individual
          • 10 Years

Not sure. Depends if AW keeps the formation we have and puts Per and Holding back there, or whether we go back to 4-2-3-1.

Issue in both cases (and part of the reason I left off on Kola and went for Bellers instead) is that Kola's physicality could see him used in the centre with Monreal pushed to the left of the four man defence. Kola isn't the best at staying back though - in GW1 he got the assist v Liverpool and was massively out of position. Have to hope that continues, basically, but I'd be a bit worried IF arsene does wheel out that position.

All of which makes you wonder why we sold Gabriel if we knew Kosc has a chronic achilles injury and when Stafi is injured we are very light at the back. It's almost as if Arsene is getting a bit past it

He looks really jittery whenever he's played (since the roasting by Montero)

I think Wenger's shown faith in him by turning down Palace's big offer(which I think we should have accepted), hopefully he proves him right.

Chambers could well do OK, it's just a case of that performance v Montero really shaking him up (a la Torres/Vidic... except on a much cruddier level).

If we can develop both Holding and Chambers into the players their potential on purchase suggested they could be, we'll be onto a winner. There's always Coen Bramhall too, who could do a Mason Holgate!

Anyone remember the old skool FPL.

I've been playing this game since 2002 and just reminded me of some of the golden moments

    Rules

    https://web.archive.org/web/20030605054704/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/rules.html#competitions

The really simple rules. None of this OPTA stats business - you'd get a bonus based on someone watching from the crowd!
Do you remember the vice captain default onto the most expensive player or a penalty converted being less score than an open play? It's amazing how little the basics have changed though.

    The Pundit

    https://web.archive.org/web/20021016200058/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/pundit.mc

Years before FFS, we had the pundit with his tips on having a Ruud van Nistelrooy, Michael Owen and Thierry Henry frontline.
A highlight being "Wayne Rooney, who at 16 years Campbell's junior became the youngest ever goalscorer in the club's history this week, could be one for the future and is available at a low price if your team is short of funds."

    The Kits

    https://web.archive.org/web/20030512051315/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/eventhist.mc?id=609149&event=9

You'd pay top dollar for some of these nowadays and check out the green background.

    The Players

    https://web.archive.org/web/20030406142758/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/elementhist.mc?id=316

Sylvin Wiltord, Tony Hibbert, Massimo Maccarone...legends all of them

But check those Giggs stats! https://web.archive.org/web/20030512055306/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/elementhist.mc?id=316&showtype=graph&popup=&iframe=

My dad and I played Fantasy Cricket in South Africa mid 90's.

You got a soft folded cardboard list with all the players you could choose from, marking those you wanted before mailing it back in. Throughout the season you had 4 transfers that you had to phone in to change (nice old round dialing mechanism)... If I remember correctly they sent you a letter once a month with a score update, but you generally had to keep track of our own scores.
          That was fun 🙂

First of all, he is a 4.5 playing mid, so can't really go that wrong. But in addition he's probably been their best player, has hit the woodwork, had at least 2-3 passes that could and should have been assists. Sure, few minutes, but heck, he's been injured

Well, I don't think you can say it's shaky ground.

Just for a start, he has ONLY played 347 minutes in the crappiest team in the Premiership - and that is BEFORE he is cashiered for this week's game!!!

As to best player, well, your opinion is valued by me, but I am afraid you will have to forgive me for not sharing it.

He has managed very little of note, and hitting the woodwork is a common attribute of those not quite good enough.

In addition to which, Palace's fixtures are just awful

He's created 3 of their 7 big chances this season. Who is their best player then? Newcastle is tastey, i'll be playing him!

Sadly, no-one has scored from them.

And as Palace have been so appallingly managed, their confidence is shattered, and team spirit ebbs away, day by day.

Loftus-Cheek, by being put on the field far too early, has been a part of this disintegration.

          No goals scored.

Is he their best player? That's what you disputed then changed the goalpost by saying nobody converted the chances........

No. He is a central reason WHY they are so useless.

That's a very odd critique of hitting the woodwork - it makes no sense tbh.

From 12 onwards LFC looks golden as 4.5 options go... Given his ostensible position, and an inevitable upturn in Palace's fortunes. But obviously there are better options at around 6.0 in midfield and imo better defensive options at 5.0-5.5

yeah that was my point - what Doosra said about guys hiting the woodwork makes absolutely no sense at all

The trouble with Loftus-Cheek is that he either hits the woodwork, or misses completely. 😉

Harry Kane, not so much ...

I watched 2-3 games with RLC,very attacking in box creating chances and getting in good positions.
He is not 9.0 he is 4.5 no need to judge/compare,will start for me almost every game.

Someone just posted that they had scored 35pts from their keeper combo.
Have to say it's an area I don't generally pay much attention to. So thought I would check mine out.
    Elliot 26pts, Foster 25pts, My total 24pts.
Guess that says pick one and stick with him.
Wondering also if it were any other position would I really accept less than 3.5pts per GW?

Are your keepers doing much better?

Been on this theme today as was getting concerned DDG and Forster were tearing it up.

My conclusion is that Pope / Elliot should keep tabs or better. Can see me playing Pope a lot more than Elliot mind you.
