Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Tuesday

Big players perform and big teams progress as October’s international break finally comes to an end with World Cup triumphs and tears in full flow.

Eden Hazard, Gabriel Jesus and Romelu Lukaku all score, but the half-time substitution of Sead Kolasinac prompts further concerns over Arsenal’s already threadbare backline.

Here are the notes from a big Tuesday night across the world.

Big names make big news

A week might be a long time in politics, but the last 24 hours has produced some seriously significant Fantasy developments.

Hot on the heels of the news that Sergio Aguero is back in light training for Man City just 11 days after his Amsterdam misadventure, his team-mate and fellow striker Gabriel Jesus was reminding us all of why he’s the second most purchased Fantasy Premier League asset ahead of Gameweek 8.

Jesus scored a brace for Brazil, one of which was set up by Willian’s industrious five-minute substitute appearance, in a 3-0 win that killed off Chile’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup finals in Russia.

The result leaves Alexis Sanchez to concentrate on the league with Arsenal – or maybe City should he jump ship in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Belgium’s 4-0 win over Cyprus came courtesy of a double from Eden Hazard as the 3.6%-owned Chelsea star bigged up his differential credentials ahead of a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The match also confirmed the availability of Romelu Lukaku, who played the last 24 minutes and scored his 16th goal in all competitions since the start of the season. The striker powered through a hapless Cypriot defence, muscled his marker off the ball and struck a sublime low drive into the corner. It was the mark of a confident and fully fit player.

That will come as a huge relief to his 59.4% ownership ahead of Man United’s Saturday lunchtime trip to Liverpool, although the trend is to sell the big Belgian – 101,000+ have done just that his week, whereas just over 67,000 have brought him in.

Jesus, by contrast, is undeniably in demand.

Close to a quarter of a million managers have secured his services as Pep Guardiola’s men prepare to host Stoke City, although it will be a surprise if he lasts the entire match having put in two 90-minute shifts for Brazil over the international break. Indeed, he has yet to make it past the hour-mark at the Etihad this season.

The 16.7% who own Kevin De Bruyne will be feeling rather more confident of their man’s minutes as the midfielder only came on for a late cameo against Cyprus, replacing Hazard.

Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Nacer Chadli all played the full match against Cyprus, with Simon Mignolet, Kevin Mirallas and Steven Defour unused subs.

Kolasinac sparks new Gunners scare

Sead Kolasinac was substituted at half-time as Bosnia and Herzegovina won 2-1 in Estonia.

There are currently mixed reports as to whether the move was tactical or in response to an injury. Thursday’s press conference with Arsene Wenger may well be the first opportunity to get clarity on that.

Shkodran Mustafi already limped out of Germany’s 5-1 win over Azerbaijan earlier in the international break, and with Laurent Koscielny missing the Gameweek 7 victory over Brighton with ongoing Achilles problems, an already-stretched Gunners’ defence can barely afford to lose Kolasinac.

Rob Holding is already looking highly likely to start the weekend trip to Watford, but Arsenal’s defensive resources are thin enough that should the big Bosnian be injured, Wenger might have to change formation, with Nacho Monreal moving to left-back in a flat back four.

Liverpool centre-half Ragnar Klavan started and finished the match for Estonia, with Asmir Begovic doing likewise for the visitors, while Muhamed Besic was an unused sub.

Key assets rack up the minutes and miles

The traditional end to an international break brings with it the guessing game of who might miss out domestically thanks to their gruelling schedule for their countries.

Top of the list might well be City centre-half Nicolas Otamendi, who played 180 minutes for Argentina, including last night’s 3-1 win in Ecuador – at altitude – which confirmed La Albiceleste’s place in Russia. However, with Vincent Kompany still to return to full fitness, Guardiola may not have the defensive options to preserve Otamendi.

Man United back-up keeper Sergio Romero also put in a full shift, while his team-mate Antonio Valencia had the night off as he was suspended for the hosts. Despite a long-haul flight, that should strengthen his chances of starting at Anfield in the early kick-off.

He will likely face Liverpool stars Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, who were both involved in the Brazil win, the former playing 87 minutes before being replaced by the latter.

The pair now appear likely to start against United now that Sadio Mane has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury.

City midfielder Fernandinho was given eight minutes at the end of the match, while team-mate Danilo was an unused sub and club-mate Claudio Bravo played the full 90 minutes in the Chile goal.

Among the other much-travelled South and Central Americans, West Brom’s Salomon Rondon started and finished Venezuela’s 1-0 win in Paraguay, David Ospina and Davinson Sánchez did likewise as Colombia drew 1-1 in Peru, but West Ham striker Chicharito had the night off as a much-changed Mexico lost 3-2 in Honduras.

Elsewhere…

Olivier Giroud started, finished and scored as France confirmed their World Cup finals place with a 2-1 win over Belarus.

Hugo Lloris also played the full match, Moussa Sissoko was given a 12-minute run-out from the bench, while Alexandre Lacazette was an unused sub.

Holland beat Sweden 2-0, but it wasn’t enough to stave off their World Cup elimination.

Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Aké and Daley Blind played the full 90, while Georginio Wijnaldum was given 71 minutes before being replaced by Davy Klaasen, with Daryl Janmaat coming on at the same time.

Maarten Stekelenburg and Wesley Hoedt watched from the bench.

Portugal consigned Switzerland to the play-offs with a 2-0 win in which Man City’s Bernardo Silva provided an assist.

José Fonte, Cédric Soares and Silva played the full match, while Swansea City’s Renato Sanches was an unused sub. Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri completed 90 minutes for the Swiss.

Brighton keeper Mat Ryan started and Huddersfield’s Aaron Mooy came on after 11 minutes as Australia beat Syria 2-1 to confirm their place in a play-off with Peru for a place at Russia 2017.

DeAndre Yedlin played 90 minutes, but Geoff Cameron stayed on the bench, as the United States crashed out of next year’s finals following a shock 2-1 loss in Trinidad and Tobago.

Spurs’ Son Heung-min scored a penalty and played 80 minutes of South Korea’s 3-1 friendly loss to Morocco. That offers some reassurance to Ben Davies’ owners concerned that Mauricio Pochettino may again elect to deploy Son at left wing-back, resting the Welshman with the midweek tie with Real Madrid in mind.

Finally, Palace’s Chung-long Lee played the full 90, though Swansea City’s Ki Sung-yeung was afforded just 28 minutes following his recent injury.

Ghana won 3-0 in Saudi Arabia in another friendly, with Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey captaining the visitors.

Interesting, it is something I am looking at

Obviously at the moment the big mids have hardly fired so people are going cheap in midfield

However these are mids who have scored very high last few seasons and I don't see why this season will be different. In my opinion if you actually want to be brave I'd pack the midfield and go cheap at the back

  10. Baseline BPS is not significant for forwards
    Ludo
    • 10 Years
    6 years, 5 months ago

I've been trying to find out just how significant Baseline BPS is for Forwards picking up bonus points when they score or assist, and the short answer is - not very!

For example, Marcus Rashford has been pretty much the best Forward in the game for Baseline BPS so far this season (6.6 per game), and yet he only has 3 bonus points from 2 goals and 3 assists (0.6 bonus points per attacking return). On the other hand, FPL's joint top players for bonus with 9 points so far are Harry Kane (1.5 bonus per attacking return) and Alvaro Morata (1.0 bonus per attacking return), and both have a Baseline BPS of 0 so far this season, which is obviously as bad as it gets. Similarly, Lukaku has 8 bonus points (1.0 bonus per attacking return) despite a Baseline BPS of 0.4 per game.

The reason is that Forwards receive 24 BPS for each goal, and all Forwards are fairly terrible in the Baseline BPS. The best Forward for Baseline BPS with 20 or more appearances last season was Wayne Rooney, with 6.2 per game. That's very similar to Rashford's 6.6 so far this season, and it shows that even the best Forwards will struggle to hit 7 or 8 Baseline BPS per game, which isn't a whole lot more than nothing.

It's a different story with Midfielders, if you look at Coutinho's 20.3 Baseline BPS per game so far, KDB's 17.3 per game, or Silva's 17.0 per game. At the other end of things, players like Choupo-Moting and Sterling (3.3 per game), Salah (3.9) and Alli (6.3) play like strikers, which is reflected in their low BPS scores, but are rewarded with just 18 BPS for each goal they score (although they do get the extra point). The difference in Baseline BPS is significant if you're choosing between Silva and Sterling, but you won't find two Forwards with such a gap in bonus potential.

This means that no Forward is likely to come close to bonus points without scoring a goal, and there's generally no such thing as a 'bonus magnet forward'. To illustrate this, I took the Baseline BPS per game and the bonus points per attacking return (Goals + Assists divided by Bonus) for every Midfielder and Forward with at least one goal or assist in 2017/18 and 2016/17, and looked at the correlation between the two stats. For Midfielders, there was a correlation of 40.59% (which is itself not strong at all), but for Forwards, there was a correlation of just 6.76%. In other words, a better Baseline BPS was not related to receiving more Bonus Points when scoring or assisting.

Looking at the twelve Forwards who scored at least 10 goals last season, it's worth noting that Christian Benteke (0.0 Baseline BPS per game, 0.76 bonus per attacking return) and Diego Costa (1.4 Baseline BPS per game, 0.81 bonus per attacking return) were the worst of the group in both categories. I'm not saying Baseline BPS plays no role for Forwards scoring bonus, but I do still think it's marginal.

Of that same group of twelve Forwards, the top five for bonus points per attacking return last season were Jermain Defoe (1.33), Troy Deeney (1.29), Sergio Aguero (1.28), Fernando Llorente (1.22) and Romelu Lukaku (1.18). Those players ranged from 3.1 to 4.6 Baseline BPS per game, so none of them were particularly strong in that area. Instead, I think their bonus potential had more to do with their being the main sources of goals for their respective teams, with all but Deeney having a goal involvement over 50%. Benteke and Costa, on the other hand, were involved in 34.7% and 44.3% of their team's goals respectively. This meant that when they scored, they were unlikely to be competing with other players for bonus, unlike Rashford for United this season.

I'd also like to note how players with a tendency to pick up big hauls do well in bonus terms - look no further than Harry Kane this season - every time he's scored, he's scored twice, and picked up full bonus points as a result, which is a very efficient way of scoring points! In summary, obvious as it may seem, look for Forwards who are their team's main source of goals, look for Forwards who are explosive, and most importantly, look for the Forwards you think will score the most goals! These will be the Forwards picking up the most bonus points - if you're trying to choose between two of them, I wouldn't even factor Baseline BPS into the equation.

It was mostly influenced by Jonty's hot topic of a team of baseline bonus stars - the Forwards were Rashford, Ayew and Diouf, which didn't look very appealing!

In fairness, he didn't recommend them as picks, but it made me wonder how much impact it makes for Forwards.

Knowing what not to do can be as useful as knowing what to do, I suppose!

The haul point is obvious. 24 * 2 will take 3BPS most weeks.

Forwards lose BAPS through big chances missed, E.G. Benteke has missed 100% of his big chances this season LOL.
Interestingly, Kaku has the best big chance conversion at 66% of the big strikers.

I do think there are exceptions. If you look at Firmino's baseline bps in every game he's played 70 minutes or more as a false 9.

      GWK 1 - 9
      GWK 2 - 8
      GWK 3 - 12
      GWK 5 - 14

That's nearly 11 average. Admittedly it does dip when he plays less than 70 minutes (also correlates with him playng wider). So if Firmino gets a goal in a game where he plays 70+ minutes in his favored position, he's looking at 35bps which in most games will get him 2-3 bps. Getting 8's and 9's out of one goal strikers is a significant improvement over those who hover between 24 and 28 bps and only score 6. You want strikers than can at least surpass 30 (6 baseline) bps, in order to beat out most clean sheet defenders.

Good point, I kept expecting to see Firmino mentioned in Ludo's post haha. Firmino is the only forward I have ever heard of though mentioned in terms of strong baseline bonus. And even he needs a goal to make the most of those strong baseline stats, which I guess backs up Ludo's point anyway.

Good point, but if we're trying to get the full picture of Firmino's bonus potential, I wouldn't want to just look at games where he plays centrally, or for 70 minutes or more.

With Sturridge around, he'll continue to play some matches out wide, as he did last season, and everyone at Liverpool is likely to be rotated every now and then. He hasn't played 90 minutes yet in any league game this season, so I wouldn't bet on him lasting that long very often.

Including every match played, his Baseline BPS per game so far this season is 7.3, which is very good for a Forward. Last season, his Baseline BPS per game was 9.6 - he may well match that again this season, and be the best Forward in FPL for Baseline BPS.

However, even if that's the case, that slight Baseline BPS advantage over other Forwards probably won't be as important in bonus terms as whether or not Firmino continues to be as explosive as he has so far (picking up an assist in both games he's scored), and how he scores compared to his team-mates - if Firmino gets a goal, Coutinho would beat him in the BPS if he scores as well, and Salah or Mane would beat him if they score twice.

Very true. He might get a few more minutes now with Mane out. Whether or not thats up front or out wide though is another question...

I've not owned a City player all season for the fact Pep causes more stress to us than any other manager.

If Jesus doesn't scored by half time and City are cruising (as expected) then I don't even want to check Livescore as you know he'll be hooked.

    Bloody Morata.

to WC. What's the best way of doing this?

A make all your transfers, confirm, then activate WC before the deadline

B activate WC/make transfers, then confirm before the deadline?

I'm not really looking to make a profit (unlikely now I know) but there are one or two players I want I expect to rise before deadline, would be nice to get them before this happens.

    Thanks!
