Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Forwards

Our final Watchlist article focuses on the forwards as Fantasy Premier League managers scramble to react to recent injuries and attempt to configure the perfect strikeforce.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These rankings give an indication of our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Injuries to Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Morata have played a big part in the recent transfer activities of FPL managers, though with Romelu Lukaku proving his fitness in Tuesday’s World Cup Qualifier for Belgium, we can at least be reassured on his Gameweek 8 start.

Harry Kane is also injury-free and, arguably, in the best form of his career.

Granted, his output at Wembley – blanks in all three league outings in front of his own fans – remains a concern, but Kane’s underlying statistics are peerless.

The top forward for shots, efforts in the box and attempts on target, he’s been the go-to striker ahead of a home encounter against Bournemouth – over 339,000 have snapped him up since the previous Gameweek.

Whereas midfield pair Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have struggled to find the net, notching just twice apiece so far, Kane has scored two goals in three of the last four league matches.

He remains a fixture-proof option ahead of a mixed schedule which involves home clashes with the Cherries, Palace and West Brom, as well as head-to-heads with Liverpool, Man United and Arsenal, in the next six.

Boasting a massive 59.3% ownership, Lukaku has been the most consistent forward this season, netting in all but one of the opening seven Gameweeks.

Given that his highest return on the road is seven points, he looks a less enticing captaincy pick in the short-term, with three road trips – including visits to Liverpool and Chelsea – and a home clash against the Spurs defence to come over the next four.

Lower down our ranks, his team-mate Marcus Rashford has started six of the first seven Gameweeks, serving up two goals and three assists already.

Considering he managed five goals and three assists over the entirety of 2016/17, the starlet’s upturn in output suggests that, despite mainly being utilised off the left flank, he may yet prove a viable third striker option at just 7.6.

Indeed, with 33 points on the board, Rashford is the sixth top forward in terms of value for points per million (4.3) and is owned by just 8.9%. He’s played from start to finish just once as he continue to share pitch-time with Anthony Martial but, given the lack of options in his price bracket, he remains in our thinking.

Gabriel Jesus is second only to Kane for transfers-in over the Gameweek, earning 280,000+ new owners and up to second in our rankings.

Aguero’s likely absence bolsters his potential here. Although Jesus’ time has been managed, it’s no coincidence that his first 90-minute outing arrived in Gameweek 7, with the Argentine injured for the trip to Chelsea.

When on the pitch, the Brazilian has played a part in 45.5% of his side’s goals – more than any other team-mate – as Pep Guardiola’s men prepare for a favourable run of fixtures (STK BUR wba ARS lei hud).

However, we should not dismiss Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane as cheaper short-term alternatives in midfield. Sterling is the top midfielder for goals (five), while Sane has bagged 29 points in his last two at the Etihad.

We also have to carefully monitor Aguero’s injury situation.

Tuesday’s reports confirming that the Argentine had returned to light training indicated that the striker may yet be back in contention sooner than expected. Certainly the Gameweek 11 clash with Arsenal will be an obvious target; it remains to be seen if Guardiola would risk an earlier return. Some reports today even suggested he could be considered against Stoke this weekend.

Rested from international duties as he looks to overcome a hip complaint, Jamie Vardy sits fifth in the forward standings despite a testing start to the season.

The Foxes’ frontman has bagged five goals, netting against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, and also has penalties to strengthen his potential ahead of a run that sees him face only two of last year’s top six in the next 11 Gameweeks.

Between now and Gameweek 18, Vardy will entertain West Brom, Everton, Burnley and Palace and also visit Swansea, Stoke, West Ham, Newcastle and Southampton.

Alexandre Lacazette’s lack of away form is a big concern, given that Arsenal hit the road four times (wat eve mci bur) in the next six Gameweeks.

With a visit from Spurs also on the horizon, this leaves only a Gameweek 10 encounter with Swansea at the Emirates as a stand-out fixture for the Frenchman.

Alexis Sanchez’s return in midfield could also have an impact on Lacazette’s 14.9% ownership if the Chilean rediscovers the form that saw him score 15 of his 24 goals on the road last season.

Roberto Firmino’s stock is in rapid decline after dropping to the bench away to Newcastle. The Brazilian has blanked in four successive outings and with clashes against Man United and Spurs up next, the exodus is picking up pace.

Mo Salah and Philippe Coutinho look better options as routes into Jurgen Klopp’s attack, though Firmino – who also has penalty duties – could yet profit from a kind schedule from Gameweek 10 onwards.

The injury to Sadio Mane adds another variable however. It has been well publicised that Liverpool struggle in attack without the winger’s incisive running, scoring just 1.5 goals a game without the Senegalese, compared with 2.2 goals with him in the line-up.

Further down the price brackets, Joselu and Tammy Abraham are currently our budget frontmen of choice.

Costing just 5.5, the Newcastle striker’s average of 20.8 minutes per attempt is more frequent than premium picks such as Morata (23.4) and almost on a par with Aguero and Lukaku (both 20.3).

Although he only started for the first time in Gameweek 3, the summer signing sits fifth among forwards for shots in the box, while only Kane and Lukaku have bettered his 11 attempts on target.

Boasting two goals in five starts, Joselu has the fixtures to prove value with money – Rafa Benitez’s men face Southampton, Palace, Burnley, Bournemouth, Watford and West Brom over the next seven Gameweeks.

Abraham continues to simmer as an option and typifies our struggle for candidates at this price point.

He could yet be under threat should Paul Clement tweak his formation and tactics but, for now, he looks to remain up front alongside Wilfried Bony, with Jordan Ayew deployed in a support role.

The Swans boast four enticing home fixtures (HUD LEI BRI BOU) and a trip to Burnley in the next six which could see Abraham finally break-out and fulfil his potential as a cut-price asset.

Xhaka is due for some returns. Stats are good and he takes some set pieces. If Jones plays, can't see Utd keeping a clean sheet against Liverpool.

Who would you ditch to get Hazard in (on a WC) - budget not an issue, I can squeeze funds elsewhere.

Gross - good fixtures, rising price
Brady - good stats, but fixtures not so great
Sterling - a bargain or City fixtures, would like to keep short term at least
Mkhi - good creativity, could do well in Fell and Pogba absence.
Coutinho - with Mane out again think he's a bargain.

I'm leaning to Brady - right choice??

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Forward line ups

What is your strategy regarding forwards - given doubts on a return date for two big guns - Morata and Aguero?

Is three heavyweight strikers still optimum?

Can Vardy keep pace with his pricier counterparts?

Or is a two man forward line - supplemented with a budget enabler - the best policy? And if so is Kane and Lukaku the default partnership.

Finally - what to do with Jesus? Is he a convenient stop gap - while we await news on Aguero and Morata? Or can he be a long term option up front.

I like the look of 442, which I plan to switch to soon probably with Kane and Lukaku who I think are the most reliable of the premium options.

I'd rather spend 8.5 on a mid than a forward, don't trust Vardy or Firmino and everything below that looks patchy at best for returns.

With Aguero and Morata being closer than anticipated, I think a big front 3 of Kane, Lukaku and Jesus is the best way to go and I will be doing that on wildcard.

      On Jesus-Vardy-Kane.

Brought in Firmino on wildcard and he flopped massively so happy with the switch to Vardy but Morata's injury cost me, so I've had to go for Jesus and live in fear for rotation.

Ideally I'd have brought Morata in for Jesus in 4-5 weeks time while he and Aguero returned slowly to full fitness, but that plan looks ruined due to their quick recoveries.

Currently on Kane, Firmino, Abraham. Would like to do Firmino to another premium striker, but feel like Jesus would just be a stop gap for Aguero or Morata so might hold fire for now until things are more clear. Really don't fancy Vardy. Would eventually like to go cheap in midfield and have Kane, Aguero, Morata.

Kane Jesus Wood here, will probably keep all of them and just get Aguero instead of Jesus when fit. Enables two premium defenders together with Maguire and two premium mids. Three heavyweight strikers is out of the question i prefer all of the lines to have premium players and one medium.

Its just the questionable home form really. If Spurs were at WHL then I think his ownership would be north of 50% by now. Eriksen has matched him and Davies exceeded him for points so far, so there is value to be had elsewhere in the Spurs squad as an alternative strategy.

Currently on Kane Lukaku Firmino - but debating whether to get Jesus for Firmino (-4) then change to Morata or just keep Firmino and get Morata once he's fit?

Lukaku, Jesus, Firmino at the moment.

Leaning towards bringing in Hazard, which would make worrying about Morata's return date obsolete. I don't think 3 heavyweight is optimum, but these guys are averaging 7 points per game, which is just about justifying their price if not captained, so I think its a fair strategy this season.

I don't think Vardy can keep pace, but I think he will justify his price. What you do with the saved cash is the key.

I don't think a 2 man forward line is justifyable yet as the cheap options up front are so awful, no 4.5's are even playing, and the 6.5's aren't performing at all. Waiting to see a breakout performer in this price bracket.

I think Jesus can be a long term option up front. You just have to take the reduced minutes with the haul's.

Think the best front 3 (when all fit) if you wanna go big is Kane Morata + one of Aguero/Lukaku

hmm yea BUT I think Hazard is potentially the highest scoring mid from those teams ( 'coverge' ) so, think my 3 + Hazard is the best 4.

I have a front 3 of Lukaku, Jesus and Kane.

I still think 3 premium forwards is optimal given that Morata and Aguero are likely to return soon - in that respect Lukaku and Jesus are useful placeholders who are as likely as anyone to get points.

Jesus is a great option as long as Aguero isn't fit

Lukaku will probably keep scoring, but Morata preferrable.

Currently I have Kane and Lukaku who I will be sticking for the rest of the season should they remain injury free. Third striker is Lacazette who is still on probation. I'll probably give him two or three more weeks, the facts that encourage me to keep him is that he is on pens and is as near to being nailed as any striker is (apart from Vardy, or Morata when he gets fit again). I also think that he is getting stronger with each match as becomes used to playing here. Not many OOP midfielders this season, so personally I am sticking with 3 up front until the Hazards and Sanchez's start hitting rich veins of form, then I might consider playing either 3-5-2 or 4-4-2.

The boring one - Kane/Jesus/Vardy. It looks like a template on FFS, but templates takes shape for a reason.

Kane - season keeper, I guess.
Jesus - best Morata placeholder with huge potential until Aguero back.
Vardy - a risk, but could be well worth it. For 8.5 he has potential to perform like both 10.0 or 5.0. 🙂 The main reason is that he has great fixtures, history and easy to downgrade. With Vardy you can easily change 4-3-3 back to our usual 3-4-3 or even two up front formation.

This Aguero's imminent looking return has made me think about Jesus. I think I'll go without Hazard on wildcard so Morata would be my preferred Chelsea attacker to have when he's ready. Probably just going with Jesus this week -> save FT after wildcard and assess then where to go with frontline.

      Kane Lukaku Jess currently.

Jesus will likely become Morata when fit.
Lukaku could become Aguero (although I’d do Mhki to Sterling first, so might keep big Rom).

Kane is locked, the rest are up in the air. Looking at one of Jesus/Vardy and Calvert-Lewin/Joselu. Vardy + C-L leaves me with Hazard, Coutino, Sterling. If I go Jesus & Joselu then Sterling can make way for one of Richarlison or Ramsey. News conferences and team news on Saturday will help make my mind up.

I think there are 4, big hitters at present and we can't have them all.

Kane, Aguero, Morata and Lukaku - Vardy could be the 5th if (and I think he will) get on the score sheet in re next 2. Whats remans to be seen is we can get away with the cheaper 3. Personally I think Kane is undroppable, so he'd take my top spot. Vardy looks to be having a great season, despite facing some of the bigger teams, (Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool) and on pens. Currently in my WC team and could well stay for the duration. No champs league and on pens is a big plus. the 3rd spot is up for grabs and I think will be a fight between Morata and Aguero.

Jesus is a good stand in for Aguero, Ive structured my WC so I can transfer him to Aguero/Morata when available/fixtures suit.

Kane, Hemed (to rotate with Naughton) + one more big striker to rotate when fixture blocks suit, started with Lukaku, went Aguero (now Jesus) then Morata then Lukaku.

Can't have them all so need to be flexible, Kane will be the C of choice, everyone else will be in and out.

I call this stratergy, 'Musical chairs'

Lukaku, Kane & Vardy. Morata to replace Vardy ...
Three up top is a must due to the higher chance of bonus for goal scored compared to mids

That theory would carry weight if the strikers lead the mids by some margin for bonus, Kane aside, all mids and forwards are locked at 8, many defenders on 6.

All to do with 2 goal hauls for a forward or a goal in a 1-1 game by a forward ... by the end of the season I think we will see premium forwards getting the most bonuses

Goalkeepers and defenders scoring a goal 12 bps
Midifielders scoring a goal 18 bps
Forwards scoring a goal 24 bps

Lots of what ifs for that stratergy with no real evidence that the extra spent on that 3rd striker will be anymore beneficial if say 3m more was spread around bulking up other areas.

Of course, none of us have crystal balls but Kane, Lukaku & Morata are all nailed and I think will score more than the mids.

With the exception of Pogba, Eriksen and Alli I can see most mids being rotated, which worries me.

Yes, don't dispute they are all nailed and will score goals but you're suggesting they are just have based on bonus, not sure that's correct.

Eriksen, Coutinho, Hazard for example are far cheaper and often have to register one scoring action (not have to brace) to secure bonus.

I'm guessing at the end of the season there won't be much in it and even more so when you consider the gap in their prices and what that gap could do elsewhere in your squad.

You make it sound like it's only the strikers who hog the points, that's incorrect and misleading.

I am simply expressing my view that the premium nailed single strikers will get more bonus points this season and supporting it by reference to the bps system for goals scored (which changes from last season?) and the fact that certain strikers will always be in their correct position. I do not consider this as misleading, rather the opposite really.

We have seen mids being messed around with a bit, Gylfi down the left, KdB deep, Sanchez on the left, Coutinho deep etc., which you will not get with Kane, Lukaku, Morata ...

Ok, fair enough, I'm just pointing out that so far, that view is wrong.

We can all speculate but probably better to deal with facts right now.

Kane on 9 bps, everyone else on 8 from midfield and upfront solidifies this view.

Edit. Coutinho has hardly played, is currently on 6bps, Lukaku has played every game, is currently on 8, there's a clue in there somewhere.

My opinion is neither right nor wrong.

                      Facts ....

5 forwards have 5 or more goals, only one mid has scored 5 goals
Forwards get more bps (24) for scoring goals than mids (18)
8 strikers have 6 or more bonus point
4 mids have 6 or more bonus points

5.0 - 6.0 priced defenders are doing better than the top midfielders

Premium forwards are scoring more points than any mids or defenders.

Put that all together and it tells us that a 433 with 3 premium forwards, 4 good defenders and 2 premium mids is the way to go - no need to scrimp up front and spread the money else where, its is affordable any way

                      1. Freddo

You are basing this whole theory after 7 games where Hazard has been injured, Sanchez has rarely been available, Coutinho has been awol and Alli has been finding his stride.

Bit of a small sample size to give such a concrete argument like you do.

The player who's no 1 in the FFS Members League has scrimped on that 3rd striker and has played with only 2 strikers all season, just a wild guess but I'm guessing he's got more points than plenty of teams with 3 big strikers.

You have 15 players to score points, not 3 who happen to play upfront.

It is just my opinion, not right, not wrong - an opinion.

I am basing it on the 7 games because that is the only information available.

The excuses you put forward for Alli, Coutinho and Sanchez can equally be applied to Kane, Morata etc

The bottom line is that forwards get more bps for goals than mids - fact, they score more goals - fact, the have a greater chance of winning goal bps because the score more - fact, which immediately gives them an advantage for getting bonus points.

I don’t think it is correct either to anecdotally point to the No.1 FFS player as playing 2 up top must be right and at the same time criticise the small 7 game sample - you can’t have it both ways?

Where do I say that we only get points for the 3 players up front ?

You have decided to play 2 premium forwards and good luck but all I am pointing out is that so far the premiums forwards are doing well, getting bonuses and an affitional good defender is out scoring the fourth expensive mid as a payoff to finance to 3rd premium striker

Still, for me, Lukaku and Kane appear to be essential.

Kane Morata Vardy as soon as Alvaro is back, except if Vardy disappoints in next 2-3 games, in which case I'd downgrade Vardy to Calvert-Lewin/Joselu type and strengthen midfield

I've had Kane, Jesus, Firmino all season. I frankly don't know what to do!

Vardy in a 3-4-3, Joselu in and get a Liverpool mid are both options. I think long term Jesus and Alli will become Silva and Morata and probably would have squeezed in Morata for Firmino this week without the injury and gone 'Pool-less for a while.

I might just do nothing as I did last week.

Kak Kane Vards for me - first two pick themselves and while Jesus is tempting for that third slot , Sterling at 2.6 cheaper looks a canny option especially with his excellent stats. Vards is a good placeholder at that price - if he does well you can keep him, if not it shouldn't be too hard to find 1.7 or so to upgrade to morata. Also on Vards he has a sensational record against WBA - if memory serves he has averaged a goal per game against them - people might say past performance has no bearing on future success but always remember shearer saying he was gutted when Leeds got relegated as that was a guaranteed few goals per season gone - strikers definitely have favourite opponents - eg kak v West Ham, Kane v Bournemouth, Suarez v Norwich etc

Currently got a 2 GW plan which at the end of it will see double Man C mid, double Chelsea def and then a flexible forward line that will enable me to have this on any GW:

      Kane, Lukaku, Firmino/Vardy
      Kane, Jesus, Morata
      Kane, Aguero, Firmino/Vardy
      Kane, Jesus, Firmino/Vardy
      Kane, Morata, Firmino/Vardy

Can even move to just 2 up front if need be too.

Not convinced Jesus is a long term option which is quite strange as last year I chose him over Aguero. Now it seems the tables have turned, but with a flexible forward line it's not really going to matter to me. Will just take fixtures and form into consideration and take it from there.

Guess this is the Hokey Cokey MKII 😆

I know but they started well and everyone had Hegazi or Foster so I had to cover it off (they had some good games on paper ahead too) and it's backfired. Onto Maguire we go.

      Jesus. What is that midfield?

      WC

  14. Deano

    Current team:

    Elliott, Foster
    Kola, Bavies, Cresswell, Suttner, Long
    Antonio, Ramsey, Tadic, Gros, Tarroll
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

0 FT, 3.8M ITB, WC intact.

So, I want to keep my WC and looking at the following for -4:

    Antonio to Hazard

Problem is with WHU fixtures I think the big dog can score well over the next few weeks.

    A. Make the transfer
    B. Any other options
    C. Hold and do some surgery next week when we know more about City and Chelsea.

    1. Grand Thibauto
      • 9 Years

Would rather have a city mid. Each of your mid has good fixture but poor form. I'd get rid of Tadic before Antonio. All he managed in 7 matches was a goal and I think it was from a pen.

      1. Deano
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Exactly, I've got three mids out of form but with good stats and great fixtures. Trying to get ahead of the curve.

        1. Grand Thibauto

          6 years, 5 months ago

Just get Tadic out. Antonio has that explosiveness I feel. Tadic to Sterling, Antonio to Silva possible for you too. Then there is the option of Willian/Pedro

          1. Deano
            • 11 Years
            6 years, 5 months ago

I like Tadic to Pedro but have a feeling Austin will play up front for the Saints and resurrect their season.

Then keep! Your decision ofc. Tadic felt utterly frustrating, had him for the first 5 weeks.

I would probably leave Davies out for the fixtures. Got him at 5.7 would at best lose 0.1 if I get him later. What troubles me is the next fixture.

Thinking long-term on a Wildcard. I think Kola and Ritchie will be the biggest FPL bargains this year potentially but scared with injury risk. Who would you go for?

hi guys posted this on last thread before new one opened, know everyone sick of RMWCT but heres one more

thoughts anyone on a different WC from those I've been considering (352/442 rather than 343/433)

    ryan, Elliot
    davies, mee, cedric, cresswell, mbemba
    haz, silva, sterling, richarlison, chopo
    lukaku, kane, DCL

plan to move haz->RLC, silva->pool mid and DCL to morata in a few GWS possibly to go back to 343

its a little different for me than the vardy option but gives me silva and sterling rather than just sterling in midfield
