Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Monday

Two moments of quality emerged from Monday night’s Gameweek 8 climax. Unfortunately, neither were from significant Fantasy assets, and both wiped out the clean sheets on offer.

Here’s the notes on Monday night’s encounter at the King Power Stadium.

Mahrez steals Vardy’s thunder

It was left to Riyad Mahrez (8.4) to rescue a point for Leicester City, atoning for a dreadful miss earlier in the match, as the Algerian snaffled up Islam Slimani’s knock-down to drill the Foxes equaliser.

Owned by just 3.6% of Fantasy Premier League managers, Mahrez is unlikely to convince as a potential asset in the current landscape, with midfielders from Man City in particular currently dominating his price bracket.

Monday’s goal was his first of the season which has arrived from 18 shots so far, with just four hitting the target.

But Mahrez tops the Leicester ranks for attempts overall, with Jamie Vardy (8.6) back on 15 having mustered just a single effort on Monday night.

Vardy was partnered with Kelechi Iheanacho (6.7) who surprisingly replaced Shinji Okazaki (5.6) in the starting XI. The Japanese international stayed at home over the break, so Craig Shakespeare’s decision was unexpected. Over 51,000 managers had signed Okazaki prior to Gameweek 8.

That was dwarfed by the 294,000 who moved for Vardy. They will have been disappointed by Monday night’s showing but will remain confident of returns from forthcoming fixtures with Swansea (a), Everton (h) and Stoke City (a).

Foster misses out as Baggies are breached

Ben Foster’s injury was the big pre-match news, confirming reports on Saturday that he had sustained a problem in training.

A knee complaint, the full prognosis is not yet known, but Foster remains a doubt for the visit to Southampton in Gameweek 9.

It seems the injury was sustained while Foster played with his son on the garden. A freakish setback which Tony Pulis described as “an enormous worry”.

“At the moment we don’t know exactly what it is. He was playing with his son in the back garden and he’s just tweaked his knee and we’re a little bit concerned because he’s had the cruciate. There was no way in a million years we were going to take the risk with him.”

Boaz Myhill stepped in but was unable to prevent Mahrez’ second-half leveller. Indeed, the stand-in keeper suffered his own injury – confirmed by the player himself as a dead leg. He will need to be assessed ahead of the St Mary’s trip with the 21,993 managers who have Myhill in reserve for Foster now facing the unlikely prospect of having no active goalkeeper.

West Brom’s defence have now kept just a single clean sheet in their last six Gameweeks ahead of a gruelling run of fixtures. Man City (h), Chelsea (h) and Spurs (a) all loom in the next five Gameweeks.

That run is also unlikely to promote any interest in Nacer Chadli (5.7) despite his superb dead-ball strike for the Baggies goal.

The Belgian was making his first start of the season, having been out of favour to this point, while also struggling with a recurring hamstring injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

it's a concern, but i think they'd play Zappa in the easier plum fixtures and Azpi in the hard ones

Sounds like a naive simplification + speculation to me. Might be what I'd do on a football manager game, but I wouldn't rely on Conte doing the same in real life, myself.

I have Elliot and Forster. I am going to sell Forster, probably next week, and get a cheaper keeper to find extra cash to fund an improvement in my midfield. By this time the injuries at WBA will become more clear. My question is, should I get Pope or Myhill and why?

I do. Why? Thinking Fabianski? I don't want to waste a transfer just to get 0.4. If I am going to change keeper I want at least 0.5 or a big improvement in form/fixture/skill/CS potential.

Nay. I would save the transfer if I were you. The upgrade isn't great enough to warrant a hit, and next week you might want to prioritise upgrading Ritchie to Rich/Zaha/Sterling for free, or at least include him (or someone else) in a "mini WC".

So you think just no hit or no transfers at all this GW (I have 1FT)?

My bench is v weak (Foster, RLC, Mbemba, Schindler) so if Bavies doesn't play then it ain't good!

RLC is a great 1st sub this week (if he plays, of course). I would save, for sure. Firmino's fixtures are good after this week, you might not want to sell him next week if you keep him this week.

Your choice, though. A lot of people would take Jones and Morata for a hit, especially given recent points returns.

keep Vardy, just get Sterling or silva instead.

Vardy could have won a penalty and will be scoring again soon without needing to worry about rotation or coming back from injury.

(Disclaimer: I steer away from any rotation risk as a rule... that is biting me badly at the moment)

I would normally agree, and I would normally be wary of bandwagons based on last week's returns, but City have their groove on, and I think a few of their players' values are suddenly immense compared to players like Vardy, who I bought to eek out the value during good fixtures. The difference between, say, Vardy+Hazard vs Aguero+Sterling may not be much, but it could potentially be huge. For once, I think it might be best to follow the crowd, or even jump ahead of them on the bandwagon 😀

lol... absolutely disaster of a GW after playing my wildcard.
I triggered it half out of boredom, half to save myself a few points from hits I would have taken... and then skipped out on Man City assest in favour of being able to field a strong bench for the run-up until next year.

The group that scored these amazing 30 points and sealed my place at the bottom of most of my mini leagues:

    Fabianski/Elliot
    Maguire/Alonso/Cedric/Ward/Davies
    Hazard/Richarlison/Choupo/Solly March/ RLC
    Kane/Lukaku/Vardy

I'm still confident in this bunch and will save up a transfer (that is kinda a must after a WC).... but oh please let me now have another week of seeing shots blocked all over the place.... Maguires header that got saved made my burst our laughing.

What's wrong with Kolasinac? His heat map over the last two games see him firmly camped in his own half. Like a different player from the marauding attacker from the start of the season. Anyone know what's going on there? Get rid or keep? Next two gameweeks are Everton away and Swansea at home so at least there is strong potential for CS.
