Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Sunday

There’s injury news both good and bad involving Liverpool midfielders, while a key defensive asset for Spurs looks set to be fit for Saturday’s north London derby.

On the pitch, meanwhile, Switzerland and Croatia book their places at Russia 2018.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s international programme.

Mixed news for key trio

Liverpool’s attacking options received a boost when Sadio Mane returned fit and firing for both club and country last week.

But the midfielder has now been released from international duty, with his national federation citing concerns over the recurrence of ‘an old injury’ following his star turn in Senegal’s 2-0 win over South Africa on Friday.

That is understood to refer to the hamstring problem that had kept him out of action for a month before he produced a double-digit performance on his return for Liverpool in their Gameweek 11 win at West Ham.

Mane provided two assists in the 4-1 victory over the Hammers and followed that up with another as Senegal sealed their place at Russia 2018.

Owned by 7.6% of Fantasy Premier League managers, the winger’s release by Senegal was confirmed in a statement from the country’s FA.

“After consultations between the medical staff of the national team of Senegal and Liverpool, it was decided by mutual agreement to make him available to his club to continue treatment until full recovery.”

Mane will now be assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff on his return to the club ahead of the Gameweek 12 visit from Southampton on Saturday.

It’s not all doom and gloom for Jurgen Klopp, however.

Long-term absentee Adam Lallana is reportedly close to a return, while Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho has now declared himself fully recovered from a groin issue that had kept him out of Liverpool’s last three matches in all competitions.

He was unused on the bench in Brazil’s friendly win over Japan on Friday and hopes to feature in his country’s match at Wembley tomorrow.

“Unfortunately, I could not play for Liverpool in the past three games because of injury. Now I feel 100 percent fit, I have recovered, and I am in a good shape to be available for the game against England.”

Injuries and the protracted saga of a possible move to Barcelona have dampened Fantasy interest in Coutinho this season – he is currently owned by just 4.4% of managers.

But he is now making all the right noises, stating that he is happy and ‘playing in one of the biggest leagues in the world’, and could become a differential prospect for Liverpool in an excellent upcoming schedule.

A Gameweek 13 visit from Chelsea and a pre-Christmas trip to Arsenal aside, the Reds’ fixtures are set fair until the middle of January.

Meanwhile, Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen (8.7%) has reportedly recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of Belgium’s 3-3 draw with Mexico on Friday.

The centre-half could now feature in his country’s friendly with Japan tomorrow ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s north London derby.

Elsewhere…

Switzerland booked their place at Russia 2018 with a 1-0 aggregate win over Northern Ireland.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Stoke City midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri started last night’s second leg goalless draw, with the latter withdrawn after 80 minutes.

West Brom defender Jonny Evans saw a last-minute header cleared off the line that would have taken the tie into extra time.

He was joined in the side by club-mate’s Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt. All three, together with Southampton midfielder Steven Davis, played the full match for the Ulstermen.

Croatia’s play-off passage to next year’s World Cup finals was rather less fraught.

They completed a 4-1 aggregate victory over Greece with a 0-0 draw away last night in which Liverpool centre-half Dejan Lovren played the full 90 minutes for the second time over the international break.

Everton winger Nikola Vlasic was an unused substitute last night, having seen seven minutes of action in the first leg.

Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey played the full 90 minutes for Ghana in their 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw at home to Egypt.

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny and Stoke City’s Ramadan Sobhi started and finished for the visitors.

Huddersfield Town striker Steve Mounie started and played 56 minutes for Benin in a 1-1 draw with Tanzania.

More like Wales, Scotland, NI and England are states of the United Kingdom. Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish people would possibly get quite upset if you said that they were "part of England"

The English have traditionally gained power through aggression and oppression (I'm english btw). There are groups of people in each of the countries who think they would be better off independent of the UK.

Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is particularly messy. I don't know the details but if you're interested there's plenty of sources on the internet (Irish Civil War, Rebellion, Troubles etc.)

You make the English sound terrible. They shouldn't be singled out - It's not like the Vikings or Romans gained power by asking politely. And in many cases the English took power, did a bit of cleaning to make the place look nice, and then handed the country back. They're very friendly, the English. Sometimes.

sorting out my defence this week, brought azpi in, but over next couple changing formation with vardy making way

it’s the big split with most people right now with regards to forwards 2 big + budget or 3 big

    for me it’s either

    Carrol, sterling + morata
    or
alli, sane (or eriksen, sterling) + niasse

i’ve probably got a gw or 2 to consider it and commit, but I feel like this decision may make or break the season

leaning more towards 3 big right now, may be easier to downgrade at short notice

    what’s everyone else doing?

    1. Pegboy
      • 13 Years

Big three (Kane, Kun, Morata) but starting to get itchy feet as my bench isn't much cop. If I had 2FTs, I'd consider a mini-WC and bring in Mane, Zaha, Niasse for Carroll, Carrick, Kun.

well you’ve got to stick to your gut I think. I worry that city may start to go off the boil and then who do you bring in for sane/Sterling/silva in midfield at those prices? only pogba really. so wonder if morata/lukaku/kane are going to be far more reliable going into xmas

I think that balance is important and you're right to focus on it. I think Carroll/Sane/Niasse is not bad; though if you're worried about City - Spurs look like they have a good fixture run coming up.

    Elliot, Foster
    Jones, Trippier, Zanka, Ward, Mbemba,
    Stirling, Richarlison, Salah, Eriksen, Caroll,
    Kane, Jesus, Diouf

    1FT, 1.9 ITB

Am I fairly safe to save for this week, fairly happy with Trippier as he gets returns when he starts, or bench cover when he doesn't,

    Thoughts?

Think your probably safe this week but trippier/sterling/Jesus could have you tearing your hair out soon. can easily see a situation where none of them start

I wouldn’t take a hit but think you either need a playing defender instead of mbemba if you are happy with the above players or else switch one to someone more nailed

      just my thoughts

Jesus to Aguero seems to leave me in the same situation, I could go Jesus to Lukaku or Morata, thats my main thoughts for this week

Diouf at the moment, that needs to change, but this week doesn't seem the week to do it, any suggestions of what to do with the 1.9 would be good

think that mid price strikers are dead in the water. think that in general only option is to go budget or big instead of vardy

also although I really like coutinho, salah could be the first player to fall into essential

that’s the decisions I would be looking at in that team

Think I'd get rid Otamendi as he's suspended. Maybe also ship Rangel to a 4.5 starter so you've got a full squad.

Otamendi to Daniels, Rangel to Moreno/Duffy?

is sane really worth the extra 0.6 over sterling? on a wc and sane was the first name i put in looking at his last few weeks numbers, but i see andy and many others still dont mind sterling. it comes down to this:

    a. sane duffy and speroni vs
    b. sterling otamendi and pope

Am I GTG? 0FT. 1.4ITB. Not the most template team but seem alright for this week.

    Lössl.
    Azpi. Moreno. Ward.
    Salah. Silva. Gross. ______.
    Kane(c). Morata. Jesus.

Subs: Elliott. _______. Tarroll. Kiko Feminia.

Last spots are Fernandez (bur) and Choupo-Moting (bri) but can't decide on who to play.

Contemplating a hit to do Jesus to Lukaku/Kun(c) or even Fernandez to Daniels/Jones but not sure.

Clark will be back to rotation when lascelles returns, so he is almost an expensive mbemba
Southampton have not performed in their good fixtures so Cedric not looking great

I would say upgrade both but can’t advise on azpi without seeing if the money is needed elsewhere in the team

Salah is a great option. I have Morata too but not that confident captaining him after I captained him away to Bournemouth.

Could be worth playing Abraham over Fernandinho/Doucoure who are both DMF and could easily score 2 points..

Morata and Kane far better options IMO. Southampton will likely go to Liverpool happy to take a 0-0. WBA and Arsenal will be expected to offer something going forwards, playing at home. Leaves gaps at the back. It's not by chance that Kane and Morata's best returns have come away from home/against sides who were looking for the win
