Insane in the Prem Name, Insane in the Brain

And like a phoenix out of the ashes rises the Fantasy Premier League season campaign 2010/2011. Let us all just pause and take stock…take a breath….it’s back. Well almost.

Now, as you’re all settling down to prepare your squad for the forthcoming season, one little issue often niggles at the back of the mind – what the Dunga’s trousers should I call my team?

Don’t fret, don’t ever fret, I’m here to give you my infinite wisdom on the matter and the do’s and don’ts on the team name front.

There are so many different angles from which to approach this. I suppose the best and simplest way to think about the issue is to divide the Fantasy Football fraternity in two – those people who have witty and clever names and those who quite frankly don’t. It’s maybe the latter half of the room who should pay closest attention from this point on…

The Watchlist – Mikel Arteta

“It’s like a new signing” is the age old cliché trotted out by managers after a player, out injured for a long time, returns to a team. Quite often, if the injuries are bad, the players never quite reach the peak that they had once attained but sometimes a player can return and it seems as if they’d never left (think Bullard – before he got injured again). It remains to be seen what happens with Everton’s Mikel Arteta after a massive period of nearly a year out with a cruciate knee ligament problem. One things for certain though – Moyes will treat his return like a new signing…

Scouting the Doubles – Stoke City

Moving along to our final double-up team, we arrive with mid-tablers Stoke City. Not quite as repellent as Bolton but equally not as sexy as Man City, the Potters will have likely received plenty of fantasy funds leading up to this evening’s deadline. Can we rely on Tony Pulis and his boys to deliver? Let’s take a closer look…

Window Watch – Benni McCarthy to West Ham

Five years after a planned move to the West Ham fell through, Benedict Saul “Benni” McCarthy has finally agreed an 18-month deal with the Hammers, ending his 4 year stint with relegation rivals Blackburn Rovers. Rather depressingly the South African’s arrival at the Boleyn Ground for an undisclosed fee is probably the most interesting transfer of this window from a Fantasy Football perspective. But is he going to be a hindrance or a benni-fit to our teams? (wow, I amaze myself sometimes)

Everton Mints

Few could have predicted the opening day rout of Everton by Arsenal and even fewer would have predicted the ensuing run of poor results for an Everton team who began the season as Champions League qualifying hopefuls but ended up resembling grade A relegation fodder. Certainly those Fantasy Football enthusiasts who had backed players like Baines and Cahill to shine pre-season were getting little in return from their investment.

Luckily for Toffee fans, in recent weeks David Moyes men have begun to turn their fortunes around. As new signings like Heitinga and Bilyaletdinov have become more settled and influential players such as Phil Neville have returned from injury, Everton have become to resemble the hard working, hard to beat team we have seen over previous seasons.

Scout Report – Diniyar Bilyaletdinov to Everton

With Everton playing serious hardball with Manchester City and getting, quite frankly, a ridiculous amount of money for Joleon Lescott, David Moyes had the rare luxury of having some moolah to spend on new players. Aside from replacing Lescott it looks like the Everton manager has used the 22 million big ones to try to turn his team from Champions League hopefuls into serious contenders.

One position which he has identified as an area that needed to be improved was in the creative department and wasted no time in dipping in the market. So who did he go for? Step forward Everton’s new Russian signing Diniyar Bilyadinov Bilyertadinov Bilyaletdinov… phew, got it eventually…

The Promoted Teams – Wolverhampton Wanderers

Perhaps somebody up there likes Big Mick McCarthy after all. Given his previous top-flight managerial experience it would be no surprise if the mere mention of the word “Premiership” would have him running for cover behind the couch as if the Daleks were coming.

A kind opening fixture list, however, has ensured that last year’s Championship winners will have enough time to find their feet in the “Best League in the World” before any of the real big guns get Wolves in their sights.

Will it be enough time for the nerves to settle and see the West Midlands club approach each fixture with a growing confidence or a gnawing, creeping sense of utter dread?

The Promoted Teams – Birmingham City

One more relegation for newly promoted Birmingham City FC and they will well and truly be tarred with the dreaded Yo-Yo club brush. As a result the Blues, guided by the much maligned Alex McLeish, will be doing their utmost to ensure they stay in the Premier Division.

A busy summer in the transfer market strengthening all areas of their team should help to achieve this but regardless of who Birmingham buy the main question, which is asked of all newly promoted teams, remains; Will they be good enough to stay in the Premier League?

We won’t know this until the season starts but no matter what happens I’m sure that the blues will keep right on to the end of the road…
