Team of the Season – John Terry

Having been written off by fans and pundits alike before Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge, John Terry has silenced many a detractor in the last two seasons. Since the “Special One” made his way back to Chelsea, Terry has been named in our Team of the Season in consecutive years and been honoured in the PFA Team of the Year for his exploits this campaign. Although a line has been drawn under Terry’s England career, the Blues stalwart is exhibiting few signs of dotage on the domestic stage.

The Statistics

Despite going undefeated in their first 11 matches, Chelsea recorded just three cleans sheets over that period. With nothing in the way of attacking returns to bolster Terry’s output, though, his value depreciated from 6.5 to 6.3. The Blues’ subsequent seven matches restored our faith in his big hitting-potential, in light of the London club’s six clean sheets and Terry’s back-to-back goals in Gameweeks 17 and 18 that delivered successive 15-point hauls. A further eight shut-outs in 20 starts ensured that Terry remained at the forefront of the defender discussions in the second half of the season.

While Branislav Ivanovic’s spate of attacking returns (two goals and four assists in nine starts) upon the turn of the year rendered him the premier Chelsea defender for much of the campaign, two goals and three bonus points in his final five fixtures meant that the Blues captain finished just two points shy (177 points) of Ivanovic’s total score (179 points), while stretching his lead over third-placed pair Nathaniel Clyne and Phil Jagielka to 35 points.

In fact, Terry – who spearheads the defender scoring leaderboard with five goals – ranks seventh in the full Fantasy Premier League (FPL) roster, after surpassing his 2013/14 tally (172) with two fixtures to spare.

Although Terry picked up more bonus points (14) than Ivanovic (13), both defenders surprisingly fall short of Cesar Azpilicueta’s tally (19). Terry’s initial price tag (6.5) was pitched a tier below the marauding Ivanovic (7.0), yet the pair are more or less identical for points per game, with 4.7 and 4.8 ppg respectively. On a lesser note, Terry chalked up eight fewer yellow cards (two) than Ivanovic (ten) this term, keeping the negative points to a minimum.

The Prospects

One of only four outfield players (along with Ivanovic) to play every minute of the 2014/15 campaign, Terry’s guaranteed pitch time could well earn him a price hike to 7.0 next time around, putting him on a par with the Serbian.

Mourinho clearly has no concerns over Terry’s fitness right now and it was perhaps telling that, when Kurt Zouma was occasionally handed minutes in the heart of defence, it was Gary Cahill who dropped out to accommodate the youngster. With Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis still battling it out for the left-back berth, Terry’s security of starts offers a solid route into the Chelsea defence.

The Blues’ resilience under Mourinho saw them produce more clean sheets (17) than any other side and also saw them concede fewer goals (32) – a pattern that looks likely to continue for the following campaign due to Jose’s pragmatic approach.

Terry’s consistency of attacking returns also serves to strengthen his case for investment. The Premier League’s all-time top-scoring defender has netted at least three goals in the past five campaigns and scored more times (five) than any other defender this term.

For those Fantasy managers prepared to shop in the premium bracket next time out, it’s difficult to look beyond the Chelsea defence as a reliable source of returns. Providing he can steer clear of injury, Terry looks likely to push Ivanovic all the way for our attentions as Mourinho keeps faith in his skipper to lead the London outfit to a successful title defence.

It was beautiful, loads of beaches, a few black sand and a few red sand. It's a small island so you can see the sea from all directions, and the sunsets are like nothing I've ever seen before. Fully recommend it.

My girlfriend and I also got engaged while there. I was an old romantic and proposed here:

Not my photo, but that was the table we were sat at. Beautiful meal, on holiday at sunset - I've warned her it's all downhill from here.

We didn't, I don't drive and my "fiancee" (still feels weird) isn't the best driver, so we didn't fancy roads where people aren't exactly the most careful. The day we arrived, the taxi driver told us there was a 3 car pileup near the hotel - didn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We weren't far from Fira, so we walked there and got buses/taxis to Oia and the beaches.

Wow, absolutely amazing news.I got engaged last year, I did it in the tulip gardens of Holland, even tricked a Japanese guy in to taking a couple of snaps and then getting down on one knee and getting a photo of it. It was hard to keep a straight face while doing my speech as a 4 ft Japanese man kitted out in head to toe khaki starts screaming and doing a funny dance.

That sounds brilliant, and also slightly like a David Lynch film, nice work. It was actually my birthday when I proposed, and as I had just built up the courage, and was starting a little "pre-get down on one knee speech", they brought over a birthday cake for me.

Fantastic, did he ask for a wedding invite?

I was slightly panicked because there were a couple on the table next to us, also from London, who were at the restaurant for her birthday, and I got it into my head that he'd propose before I got the chance (and you can't follow another person's proposal with one of your own). They came over to congratulate us, and he said "you've made some of us look really bad", but he repeated it four or five times, to the point that I thought he might hit me.

I definitely ruined his night, he thought he'd pulled out all of the stops just booking the restaurant (and they were given the 2nd best table because we'd already booked the best one).

I can imagine. Especially if you did it at the beginning of the night. It must have been difficult to strike up with any meaningful form of conversation after that.
The next day I can imagine his woman saying 'so that was nice with that couple yesterday'. Therefor destroying his whole holiday. Imagine if they are there for a month. Oh God, what have you done man.
You know when someone repeats something incessantly you've made them malfunction through rage. Was his smile a bit on the stroke side?

It was really awkward, she asked our ages and then said "it's my 30th today, so you're much younger than me. Over the hill now". Then she laughed, but it was a really pained laugh. The guy just stood there repeating "you've made some of us look really bad" through gritted teeth.

He probably ended up in the Aegean Sea.

            top stuff....

The time is the issue, if only I could get a couple of months away I could focus...

            what are you writing about?

              I am writing fiction.

It's about a man who after hearing from his father for the first time in over 30years is finally reading to confront his past

yeah that would great. it's a while off being done but just over 70k words on draft one. Then I will do a few re-writes but once I have the narrative down I will be delighted.

what you want to write about?

It will be about my childhood / teenage / twenties years growing up.. I would probably throw in a couple of stories that I wasn't involved with but was around..

Think I will write it up as a fiction novel though.. even though most of it will be based on what happened.

As I write this I have actually decided I really need to do this..

                      that's great news

no harm in doing it as fiction and basing it real events. that's what most of us writers do.

a lot of my characters are based on real things and I used events from my own life and from people I know, sometimes I slightly changed things around but you should write what you know!

Definitely recommend writing a book, I've finished 2, on in Uni and one just after, and it's such a sense of achievement after all of the hard work when you finish that last page.

            oohh

think I might have to get a copt of your book then. it's always good to support other writers.

you plan on doing a third?

did you self publish or get an agent?

Self-published, and I am hoping to write another soon but have a full time job, so not as much time on my hands as I did in/just after Uni (doing an English degree also meant it was good to write constantly). I love writing though, I always write in my spare time, it's just finding a large amount of time to write a novel.

Your book actually sounds like it may have similar themes to mine, mine charts a man's life through 4 key events (one at Uni, one in his 30s, one in his late 40s/50s, one as an old man).

yeah my book has similar themes. it explores the MC's life when he was 15/16 and major events, then a period of travel after that. that when he is 50

but yeah I read the description of your book and thought it sounded similar.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes still hoping to bring Victor Moses back for next season

"[Loans] are options you can pursue, because you can get good players in and not be commit huge chunks of money. We've done okay ourselves with loans over the last couple of years."

"It was good to see Victor back at the ground for the final game of the season. I thought it was important he came, along with Bojan, because they have obviously played their part in our season as well as those on show for the last game.

"He's back at Chelsea now, but hopefully we can still do something. We'll have to see."

FPL biggest fail of the season?

Costa (15) --> Aguero (1) in GW 22. And handing Aguero the captains armband. Ouch.

Simon, how does it feel knowing that just a vice captain/captain switch could have cost you everything you worked so hard towards?

(No.2 captained Costa, with Walcott vice for those not in the know)

I've a feeling the loans won't be as punitive next year - would certainly make me more tempted.

I achieved top 100 finishes in both formats (a unique achievement by the way #unsubtlebrag) and ended up 2nd in the Contributors & Moderators leagues for both. Unbelievable standards around these parts!

No, once you get a taste for the top you'll never forget how to get there again. A rebound is always possible though as things will be different next season so you'll need to be sharp and not willing to revel in past glories or how you did things this season.

Indeed, I think it would be hard to care quite as much (a bit like Man City). Then again, Matt Martyniak, who won it a couple of years ago, is still pretty fanatical and came around 700 this season.

Nothing to do with the scoutcast as such, but on the hall of fame page would it be possible to have the players names linked to their team pages, would like to be able to check out the rest of the top ten to compare strategies etc

      Questions specifically to Simon

Have FPL been in touch Simon? If so, how did you find out? Email? Phone? Was the call everything you expected it to be or an anticlimax?
What games/teams will you be looking to see with your VIP tickets?

ps. Thanks to you all for the podcasts over the last 38 weeks. I have really enjoyed them.

Question for Simon - How often did you agree or go against the community when it comes to captaincy and transfer decisions ? . The community often gets things right eg . Tadic and Aguero in gw 8 and are often ahead of the curve . Other times community members get things wrong eg Bojan and the Boselli bandwagon .

Atletico Madrid could turn to Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal if they are unable to re-sign Chelsea’s Filipe Luis this summer, reports Marca.

The Spanish capital club want to sign a new left-back and the return of Luis, who left the Calderon for Chelsea last year, is their priority.

Atleti are also exploring other options too and Marca reports that they could reprise their interest in Monreal.

        it's bleak isn't it.

vey interesting how Liverpool was in such poverish conditions yet they dominated football, ver different form how things are today.

if the Fifa FairPlay is lifted then it will really hurt clubs like Liverpool.

It was like that for a lot of clubs though, and we had the best team, despite not necessarily the best players. With managers like Shanks and in particular Paisley (definitely one of the best managers the game has ever seen) the continuity of the team allowed for success to be bred, and the team to dominate.

the 26 year gap is a bit mental blow to the supporters and the team and I wonder how it well affect everything.

I guess the past is the past and we need to re-build. hope it won't be another 26 years before we win another league 🙁

We aren't entitled to anything though, we just need to hope the club can get it right off the field first and then on the field, I have faith the owners can do that, my worry is they may sell out in 2017 (many clubs will be due to TV rights increase and so higher values) and we fall behind under bad ownership. It's all down to mismanagement off the field since our last title win though, we never modernised so fell behind, disappointingly. I think football is such a different game now its hard to grasp how we'll succeed, the important thing is we're behind the club though. Our expectations really need to be tempered, have been for a while, personally I don't think we'll ever win a Premier League title as it is, mostly because of the potential of a pan-European league made up of mostly CL clubs and a few more, when that happens I can see us just mixing it if we're lucky unfortunately...

    Hi guys,

Still looking to get this FFS FIFA tournament up and running on XBOX ONE.

Had quite a lot of interest, but then it sort of petered out. Let's get it revived again!

If you want to join, and own an XBOX ONE and a copy of FIFA, send me an email at fantasyfootballaz7@gmail.com.

I reckon we have about 10 people in so far, so lets try and get it up to 16! Or, if we can get to 32, we'll have group stages to boot.

Doubt he'll reach those levels tbh with you. He won't have pens for a start. But i'm sure he'll have a purple patch, especially while defences work out just how to deal with him. He'd easily be up there with the best in the league in the air

He got loads of grief off the Cardiff fans but I always saw he had potential. Like you said, great in the air, won the majority of aerial ball.

He couldn't finish a one-on-one for his life though. I wouldn't put him in my FPL squad.

So the first time I have been on a proper computer since the season ended and for me I have to say what an ultimatley underwhelming season from start to finish. A couple of high points I guess I did quite well in LMS and I really enjoyed the cricket world cup (until the UAE went out).

But a high point of 8,066 and a final finishing position of 20,090 is the worst I have done since I started spending quite so much time on it.

I guess I should have known it was going to go badly when I was still languishing at 203,566 in GW6. Then when I lost my internet for a month just after activating my winter wildcard didn't help. But after that I was playing catchup constantly and made a series of unwise punts to boot.

Still onwards and upwards. What to learn for next season? Try to have a better GW 1, keep your concentration right until the end of the season, never buy players who are not completely fit especially when they are coming back from longer term injuries. Always go all out on a DGW because sometimes the points come from where you don't expect them. Oh and if you don't need to take a hit don't do it.

Anyway thanks everyone for your company over the last season. Let's all do just that bit better next season.

Seriously though I had a terrible GW1 last season. of over 1.4 Million. It puts you on a bit of the backfoot right at the start. Try to at least be reasonable.

I think if that happens then you've got to bite the bullet and take a major point hit to sort it out, especially if you've gambled on the likes of Bojan and Ben Davies (as I did).

I always try and hoard my points right from the start but if there's ever a time to speculate to accumulate it's there in August.

Question for people that play UFPL, is there such a thing as 'Loans' in that game?

I'm wondering why the main FPL site has stats for players that are labelled 'loaned_in' and 'loaned_out'

There is - there are no transfers for large periods of the game so during those spells you can loan players for varying lengths of time (for a points hit). I found it quite punitive so didn't use the opportunity, I'll be reassessing next year.

I used a few and it worked out very well one time and very bad another.

think I got a load of DGW in one week for a 15 point hit and they didn't perform and the players I took out or would have played instead of them did well.

cost me a top100 spot in the end. I clawed my way back but it was too late.

By the way Adrrian Charles burst through the front door on Sunday screaming "right where is he?"
I hid, knowing he was looking for me to laugh at me for something football related. He knows we can't use our phones at work and takes pleasure in telling me the scores. My manager dragged me to him and the bar steward shouted "6, ha 6, why are you so rubbish?" I guessed he meant Liverpool, but said I didn't care as it was a nothing game. But he knew I was hoping to get in to the top 1k and said "yes but I know a little someone with Mignolet in goal". Then it bloody hit me. Oh God I said. My head sunk and he did a little dance.

The barman at the pub next door to mine said David Mitchell used to be a regular, came in every week for years and then married and left Kilburn about a month before we moved there. As a huge Peep Show fan, that was pretty gutting.

Silva isn't close to essential especially with the price he'll get next season. I expect he'll be 10.5m.

Not essential, but his ppg is equal to Sanchez and Hazard and will likely be much cheaper.

You wouldn't ever captain Silva if you own Aguero which makes spending 10.5m on him wasteful in my opinion.

this is true, but I was just reading Ruth's post on Chelsea and one point is key. Hazard will probably be 11.0 at least, but he didn't take their last peno and Jose made no comment about it (unlike when Drogba took a totally meaningless one earlier in the season). If Hazard isn't on pens he isn't worth 11.0 as he doesn't carry the same goal threat from open play as say Sanchez and is arguably less reliable for assists than Silva.

Was just listening to one of his post celebration interviews.

Said it was a good gesture from hazard to let costa take it as he had been out for a while

I think I'll go without Hazard at the start *gulp*. Slow starter, Fabregas will be in for the first few weeks.

Sanchez is my priority, I'll probably just stick him in regardless of price and build the team around him.

None of this is new of course, same problems at the start of this season when everyone wanted Rooney/Costa/Hazard/Fabregas/Sanchez/Aguero/Silva/Mata/Sterling/Ramsey... Same every year and we always manage 🙂

What's your strategy at the start? Do you go cheap in defence so you're financially flexible to early bandwagons in attack?

Much as I'd love to impart wisdom I don't have a strategy as such - I just get seduced by fixtures and/or players who look like bargains 🙂

If I were to generalise though I'd say I go pretty cheap at the back from the start (although I did have Terry for the whole of the season just gone)
