Team of the Season – Branislav Ivanovic

Branislav Ivanovic refined his breathless brand of two-way full-back play to a fine art this season, posting his greatest haul of attacking returns while ensuring that solid defensive principles weren’t neglected in the process. The ever-consistent Serb was subsequently named in the PFA Team of the Year for his efforts and deservedly earns a spot in our own interpretation.

The Statistics

Ivanovic swiftly established himself as the prime defensive pick in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), notching two goals, an assist, five bonus points and a clean sheet during Chelsea’s opening three fixtures.

Having started at 7.0, the Serbian international then hovered around the 7.2 mark for the first half of the campaign, before a hugely profitable seven-match stretch – which harvested two goals and three assists – attracted a surge of investors and triggered a price rise to 7.6. By virtue of the Blues’ eight clean sheet in their final 18 matches, Ivanovic remained a popular pick till the last and ended the season with a 30% ownership.

Ivanovic is famed for his rampaging runs down the flank and penchant for scoring in bursts – traits that are reflected in his underlying statistics. The former Lokomotiv Moscow defender headed up the defender leaderboards with regards to goal attempts (44), shots inside the box (30) and shots on target (11). Furthermore, Ivanovic was a creative powerhouse, ranking third in terms of key passes (36) and first for successful passes in the opponents’ final third (378). Only Leighton Baines (11 – two goals, nine assists) contributed to more goals than the title-winning full-back (10 – four goals, six assists) over the course of the season.

With a total score of 179 points, Ivanovic topped the FPL defender rankings and placed sixth in the overall standings. Eden Hazard, with his unrivalled 233-point haul, was the only player on Chelsea’s roster to boast a superior tally. In spite of these attacking exploits, Ivanovic was awarded just 13 bonus points in 38 appearances, trailing John Terry (14) and Cesar Azpilicueta (19) in that respect.

The Prospects

Chelsea were the standout defensive team of the 2014/15 league season, recording more clean sheets (17) than any other outfit. Moreover, the London club conceded the fewest goals (32), big chances (35) and shots inside the box (208) – a feat surely aided by the excellent shielding qualities of enforcer Nemanja Matic. As such, one Chelsea defender is likely to be a staple among the starting squads in next season’s FPL, with Ivanovic and Terry tussling for the same berth.

Despite starting last term at a higher price than Terry (7.0 to 6.5), Ivanovic was the premier choice for much of the campaign, yet the latter’s late flourish (two goals in the last five Gameweeks) greatly strengthened the Blues captain’s case for inclusion.

Given that the pair were two of only four outfield players to manage every minute last term, their consistency of minutes under Jose Mourinho is clearly crucial to how we view their prospects. It remains to be seen whether Terry’s ageing limbs will be able to handle another full season without a rest, though, and Ivanovic, for many, remains the prime pick amongst the Blues’ rearguard.

A price hike to 7.5 isn’t out of the question, though irrespective of any cost adjustments, Ivanovic is sure to enjoy a high ownership due to his favourable returns per unit of investment. Aside from Harry Kane – who’s a special case due to his unforeseen emergence – Ivanovic is by far the cheapest among the top six highest-scoring players of the concluded season. Considering only three midfielders and two forwards managed to better his overall score, then, he makes a strong claim for investing.

Key to his appeal is the Serbian’s consistency. Ivanovic’s penchant for picking up points at both ends of the pitch meant that he produced either attacking or defensive returns in 24 of his 38 appearances, and he only seems to be improving with age. Having carded his best points tally (beating the previous season’s 159) and attacking output (surpassing his four goals and five assists in the 2010/11 campaign), Ivanovic seems to be enjoying a greater freedom to bomb forward and his raids down the right will surely be pivotal to Chelsea’s title tilt once again.

    Price reductions, FPL's Achilles' heel:

    Baines: 6.5
    Lloris: 5.0
    RVP: 10.0
    Willian: 7.0
    Lamela: 7.0
    Arnautovic: 6.0
    Howard: 5.0
    Barkley: 6.5
    Lukaku: 8.0
    Lovren: 5.0
    Defoe: 5.5
    Rooney: 10.0
    Yaya: 10.0
    there's too many to list...

("based" on staying with current club)

Really, the checks and balances at FPL headquarters on preseason pricing have progressively gotten worse for years now. They're anaylitics are subjective

Add .5 more to them and they're overstated. That's part of the problem with the pricing, the rounding to zeroes and .5.

As for Lloris, 4 keepers with a start price of 5.0 or under finished above him, 4 keepers 5.0 or under finished very close behind him. Checks and balances. He's a 5.0 keeper on Spurs.

This is going to sound weird, but I listen to them most nights when I fall asleep. I always struggle to sleep in silence as my mind wanders, so have something on in the background, and Karl's monotonous voice is perfect. I have honestly listened to all of them about 50 times.

      Hey, buddy.

I live in Colorado. Been through Vegas many times.

The Stratosphere has some cool rides on top of the Spire. I loved all of the rides up there. I haven't done the bungee ride because it wasn't open when I was there. (FYI -- It is a controlled descent, not true "free fall". They need to keep it safe.) I almost crapped myself on the other rides up there. Very fun. If you go, get a pass for all the rides. Worth checking out, indeed.

FWIW -- I do not trust the gun ranges. There is a record of accidents at those places and the problem is you never really know when something catastrophic may go down. I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near those places. You're there to have fun, not hang out on life support while your family stands by and debates whether to take you off life support because some 19 year old goober instructor -- who is all shagged out from a three day rave -- forgot to check whether the semi-automatic rifle had a round in the chamber. Seriously. Please reconsider going to a gun range.

It'll be hot and the climate is very dry. Stay hydrated, especially if you are drinking at the pool.

I would recommend getting off the strip and seeing a bit of the desert if you have time. If you want to get out and hike, Valley of Fire State Park is near Las Vegas is a good break from the madness and gives a good chance to see the natural resources the desert has to offer. It is a nice break from the "Vegas experience". (Hydrate.)

I have backpacked the grand canyon many times and have always wanted to do a fly over in a helicopter. I never had the $$$$$ to do it. If you can afford it, I would do one of the longer flights. It's magnificent.

My 19 year daughter went sky diving in Colorado recently and loved it. Sky diving programs are reasonably attentive to safety. Get with a good outfit. (Disclaimer: It is a personal choice to engage in ultra-hazardous activities. Having said that, I am a reasonably cautious person and I would do it if I had the chance -- with the right company.)

FWIW -- the casinos on the strip will take every penny your have. Fast. Crazy fast. the minimum bets are set very high on the table games. If you want to gamble and have some fun -- and a chance to possible win some money back to keep playing -- get to the casinos off the strip or the casinos on Fremont Street. "Locals" casinos will at least let you play for awhile.

      Have fun.

When you put it like that I think that the gun range is probably one i'll give a miss. I have never fired a gun and imagined it to be in a controlled environment but the more I read about it there then im happy giving it a miss. Thanks.

Yes, as I will be there in July I think hydration will be extremely important regardless of the activity.

I've heard that the casinos off the strip are probably the best places to go to gamble, I will have a bit of spending money but I am by no means flush. I just want to enjoy the gambling experience and maybe play some low limit Hold'em.

        Thanks again for this.

They have some pretty crazy zip lines in Vegas proper now (one or more go from building to building at one of the resorts or something like that). You can also do some zip lining out in the desert. Also, you could consider doing some exotic car driving. There are opportunities to drive super cars (Lambos Ferraris and such) either at the Las Vegas Speedway our out on the desert roads. Exotics Racing is the name of the operation at the Speedway, while the company that takes you out on the area roads is the Red Rock Exotic Car Driving Experience.

Exotic driving sounds pretty good too, although i think i would rather spend money on other activities.

      Hey KOL,

I absolutely love Vegas. The place can be crazy expensive whatever you get up to but Venetian is the best hotel imo if you can afford it.

Helicopter to canyon is ace but check the operators as one or two have a bad accident history. Golf courses are immaculate but not the Wynn as it costs an unbelievable amount. Go to one of the big clubs and check what American chicks do on the dance floor, might not need to visit the strip club afterall. Cosmopolitan pool party is really good but better to get a big sunbed which again comes at a price.

Eat a burger, visit Fremont street (coin up bar has loads of old school arcades), play craps it's the most sociable table in the casino. Play a ridiculous jackpot fruit machine but only put $100 in max. Most of all take advantage of the free drinks when you're gambling. Grand lux cafe at Venetian is great for food anytime, Wynn breakfast buffet is awesome.

Oh and start every day with a Bloody Mary that'll banish the hangover 😉

Another great post 🙂 Cheer buddy.

Im staying at the Ayra I think its relatively new and in a pretty good location, but the Venetian looks like a must see 🙂

Thanks for the heads up on the tour operators i'lll do my research before choosing one. From a quick google it looks like are a fair few 🙂

The Wynn breakfast buffet looks to be really popular so i'll make sure to hit that

Cheers again for the tips, looks like im going to need to man up and get a bloody mary down my neck 🙂

One of my favourite memories was at Bestival a few years ago, in the gap between Stevie Wonder's main set and his encore. A few of my friends, very intoxicated, started singing that song, and it grew into a circle of about 50/60 people all singing about Yaya and Kolo Toure. I have no idea why but it was fantastic.

                what are you thinking Doos?

                Look at Flappy and Heaton

either of them every week would have served very well

I rarely get rotation right. A keeper like Myhill could get a CS v anyone, think about how many people will have benched his monster haul at OT by trying to rotate him

                  1. Injury
                  2. Rotation - almost always the home keeper.
                  3. Save points.

Ah. But Liverpool have already proved themselves idiots in this regard. 😕

next Rodgers will come out and say he's shown great character and they've offered Lambert a new 3-year deal 😉

Apparently my best formations was 5-4-1.. Averaging 78 points

People really underestime defensive points. Might go 4-4-2 next season with Augero and Costa up front...

        nah

barring the odd attacking returns defenders have a limited points ceiling

        attackers don't

        3-4-3 is always best

I'll go with 3-4-3 or 3-5-2, but that will include at least one premium defender. 2 of the top seven scoring players in FPL this season were defenders (JT and Ivan) , so a formation that includes a Chelsea defender makes sense to me.

Seriously, how can they be considering still having a leadership election this week? Hopefully they will all be being waterboarded.

Just came back after watching Tottenham vs Malaysia. Even a match between two local teams here can fill up the stadium more than this match. 😆

Oh lordie...Two investigations now...One by the Americams and now The Swiss opening criminal proceedings over the allocation of 2018 and 2022 World cups...This day just gets better and better.

Brilliant isn't it. It won't happen nut the only just punishment for the countries giving the bribes would be to take the competitions away. All that wasted money on infrastructure etc.

That absolutely has to happen...further to that, no national teams should attend those world cups.

It's the only way to deal with it. We can't allow corruption to profit by taking part...

Firmly believe that this investigation is the real deal . No more wrist slaps. If they uncover bribery in the granting of future World Cups , then its a cert there will be a re vote
