Team of the Season – Nathaniel Clyne

In the wake of Calum Chambers’ summer switch to Arsenal, Nathaniel Clyne enjoyed free reign of the right-back berth under new Southampton manager Ronald Koeman. The Crystal Palace youth product has since established himself as one of the most in-demand full-backs in the league and a top pick on the Fantasy scene.

The Statistics

After starting just 20 league matches in 2013/14 under Mauricio Pochettino, Clyne was afforded a 5.0 starting price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

His Fantasy potential was manifest from the off, in light of a goal and assist within the opening trio of fixtures. Four bonus points and three clean sheets for Southampton in the first five Gameweeks bolstered his appeal and encouraged 630,000 mangers to invest in Clyne prior to Gameweek 6 – in turn causing his value to rise to 5.5. By the end of Gameweek 12, the Saints notched another four shut-outs and Clyne had grabbed his second goal of the campaign, boosting his value up to 5.8.

Notwithstanding Clyne’s paucity of attacking returns (one assist) from there on out, and the fact Southampton registered just six more clean sheets in the matches he started, the England international boasted a hefty 32.5% ownership on the eve of the final Gameweek – more than any defender. Ultimately, Clyne was subject to the highest price rise (0.9) of any Southampton player this term and the third-highest price rise of any player in the league.

Among Southampton’s full roster, only their top scorer, Graziano Pelle (149), recorded a higher total score than Clyne (142) throughout the course of the season. In terms of the league’s full complement of defenders, the Saints defender ranked joint-third (alongside Phil Jagielka) behind the high-powered Chelsea duo of John Terry (177) and Branislav Ivanovic (179).

Clyne’s points per game average (4.1) equalled Ryan Bertrand’s, with his output further aided by a stellar disciplinary record (only four yellow cards) and a decent collection of bonus points – only Jose Fonte (16) chalked up more than his team-mate (15) this term.

The Prospects

Clyne’s current contract at Southampton is due to expire next summer, casting doubt over his future at the Hampshire club amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea. That being said, manager Ronald Koeman is optmistic that Clyne – who’s recently changed agents – will put pen to paper on a new deal:

“Still confident that he (Clyne) will sign a new contract but I think next week we will know about his situation.”

Even if Clyne elects to renew his contract, there’s the lingering fear that Southampton – given their lack of Champions League football – will lose a selection of their most-prized assets for the second year running, with the likes of midfield stalwart Morgan Schneiderlin already angling for a move away. Clearly, if Saints face another summer of extensive reshuffling, we’ll have to re-evaluate their worth from a Fantasy perspective.

Clyne is destined for a price hike off the back of his eye-catching season, with a cost of around 6.0 looking the likeliest scenario. In that price bracket, investors will expect a significant goal threat yet – despite an early-season flourish – Clyne was unspectacular in that regard, drawing blanks in all but one of his last 23 league starts.

Certainly, at that price, his popularity is bound to take a turn for the worse as we look to cheaper alternatives for our five-man backlines, with West Brom under Tony Pulis sure to be on many a shopping list.

The Saints’ goalkeeper situation is likely to be key to our assessment. With Fraser Forster expected to be sidelined for the first few months of the new campaign, it remains to be seen whether Koeman will dip into the market to strengthen between the posts. If the Saints boss keeps faith in his current back-ups options, one of Kelvin Davis or Paulo Gazzaniga could well be the favoured route into the Southampton backline until Forster is fit and available – both stoppers will certainly be cheaper than Koeman’s first-choice defenders.

Much could also depend on Toby Alderweireld’s situation. Southampton have the option to wrap up a transfer from Atletico Madrid but if the Belgian chooses to move elsewhere, the likes of Maya Yoshida could even come into contention at centre-half as a more budget-friendly option.

You think so? I think he'll be 11.0 at max.

He was priced with pens in his locker this season, and didn't break his previous season's goals and assist record.

Also, Fabregas has proven (over the first half) that he can match Haz for points and Costa will get priced high too.

Costa will be at 10.0-10.5 imo, he was priced well this season, don't see Haz costing 1.5m over Costa.

Bale had a monopoly on Spurs points as well, and he was scoring from everywhere - tap ins, screamers, left foot, right foot, headers, took corners, took free kicks. Definitely worth the 12.0 price tag.

Not sure if Haz is worth 12.0 yet given the Chelsea team scoring dynamics and fact that he's on no set pieces aside from pens

    Kun 13

Yup, when I said "please put Kane at 10", meant that people would actually have to make a choice about whether to pick him. 9 and i think he would be a popular 2nd striker.

10m though, and he will be a proper differential.

Let's not forget he was producing at the levels of a 11.5-12.0 player this season before Spurs switched off.

Agree except for Silva, seems 11.5 seems a bit far fetching, thinking more between 10-11.

Will probably ignore Alexis at the start, Arsenal points can come from anywhere, he'll be playing in the Copa America (Wenger has already said he is worried about his pre season) and he's too inconsistent (except for that purple patch without Giroud and Ozil), scores seem to be along the lines of 2, 2, 2, 15, 5, 2, 3 etc. when everyone is fit

          Add poor form to that.

Two seasons ago the top two teams for the ticker for the first ten games were Soton and Arsenal...and out teams were stuffed full of them by the end of those ten games.
Last season it was Soton and United who topped the ticker....but poor form meant United was something of a no show.

Probably true. However, I think we underestimate just how many players that the top teams look at every season...I don't know what the success rate is for their targets but I bet it's lower than one in ten.

It was noticeable that his real slump coincided with the incident at his house (see below)....I'm not sure any of us can guess how he feels about playing here.

di maria certainly flopped for his price, and he's never been (or probably ever will be) that calibre of player. football wise really hope he gets another season, but if he and his family aren't happy here then i'd rather they move. apparently they got held up at gun point in their own houe or something this season, on top of the nagging injuries that's a pretty good excuse to go off the boil!

I was amazed his wife and kids stayed after that. He had to move them in to a hotel for a while.

I can 100% guarantee you that if I took my wife and kids to another country and that happened then she'd be on the next plane home.....with or without me..

will add one thing that frustrated me about di maria, we always heard how he was MOTM in the champions league final. that's great, but it's still only 1 match, i cant ever remember him being consistent. his good is better than most which is why he commanded a fee over 30mil.
also i know he can play a more reserved cohesive style of game but i'm not sure if i see him as a pep player

Looking back through my season barely any of mine actually paid off immediately. Food for thought actually.

But then, a hit for me is often just to get the cash for a star player by downgrading someone else.

Didn't take too many but Chambers -> Kompany, Aguero -> Bony went alright in GW16, Kompany got 8 (then injured, had to take him out for Zaba who then got 11) and Bony scored with a bonus point.

I really think the positions of players needs looking at.

There are several FPL mids that are actually fwds for starters.

Personally I would like to see a split of defensive mids and attacking mids

I'll retire if fpl start mucking about with defensive midfielders. Its about predicting goals, assists and clean sheets. Add in budgets and transfers and you got your tactical side. Its perfect as is

I beg to differ! Keepers get save points, why shouldn't other players get tackle points or interception points?

He's been clear in saying that he's a midfielder, and with Gerrard (and possibly Lucas) gone I think he'll get chances there, even with Milner coming in.

Hopefully we're not going to be playing 3 at the back next season, and we've got a solution at right-back (though I'm not holding my breath).

Can't see him being changed personally. Be interesting to see where he plays for Germany U21 this summer though...

he has been great as as defender though. his passing is amazing and he made some great charging runs forward.

You say he has been great as a defender but he has struggled with the defending side of things and although he is composed on the ball he really isnt a centre back, strange that Brenton has played him there so much

as part of a back three he was very solid and adapted to the role quickly, the combo of Can, Skrtel and Sakho worked very well.

as a Right Back he was terrible, completely out of his element and I have no idea why he was ever put there.

          Agree

From an FPL point of view I understand why the Europa League is an inconveneance but for the premier league clubs, players and fans I really dont understand why it is so maligned.

Clubs like Spurs/Liverpool play all season to qualify for europe then dont bother giving it their all to win even when a champs league place is on offer to the winners. Whats the point in that. Liverpool/Spurs/West Ham/Everton are no where near winning the league, the chances of them finishing top 4 are remote so why dont they go for it?

Liverpool were a hair's breadth away from winning the league last season, when they had no European football, remember?

For clubs below those with basically infinite cash, having a big enough squad to cope with two BIG competitions is really tough. Winning the Europa league would be something like 27 extra games, which is nearly another entire league season.

was a long debate about this on the world football phone in the other day. i think the answer is simply reduce the number of matches in the competition, even if that means bringing back a third compeition like the cup winner's cup. let them play on wednesdays, make it pure knock-out, anything.

last night's final reminded me of football in the 90s, it was great in that respect. more unknowns, less super-teams, more even spread of talent.

Its obviously very nice, extremely expensive if you go for a proper meal, but I get a scotch egg and a pint for a total of £8.
Ive not read a book like this before, it wouldn't normally be my type of thing. Its currently a bit like Made in Chelsea narrated by the woman on the BBC 2 deaf channel. The in depth description on every little detail, no matter the importance is quite unique, Pilkington levels.
It sounds like a negative but it isn't. Its just as Im a non university person who is 31 reading about 19 year olds. I am at chapter 11 and can honestly see what is going on, I can see the bedrooms, the halls, everything.

"Its currently a bit like Made in Chelsea narrated by the woman on the BBC 2 deaf channel".

I have absolutely no idea what to make of that haha. I think the book changes quite a bit as it progresses, but I definitely do focus on detail amongst the wider picture. I've grown up loving The Office, Seinfeld, The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm - all things that emphasise realism and the minutiae of life in the midst of wider things.

That's obviously a bit of an odd comparison, but it's definitely instilled an interest in small details.

Its not odd its the perfect way to describe the, err description (you're definitely the one with the degree). Seinfeld especially, looking at every small detail that would, for most, not even be thought about. Thats why you never see an old person eating a Twix.
Just started 2, Simon went mental and Rob and Clare have split. Jesus, this is so far from what I usually like, its becoming a bit of a guilty pleasure, like anything with Rob Schneider.

Do NOT compare me to Rob Schneider!

What sort of books do you usually like? I do think it detours quite a bit, it is not a romance novel.

I don't read much these days. I love travel style books like the Alchemist and some cheap sort of thrillers by Dan Brown. I am not the best critic for you but have the exact same taste in humour. Silicon city could tickle you, but it's not as unique as some of the stuff you have mentioned.

They really need to do something about the Europa league , it's ridiculous that its almost seen as a punishment.

Why on earth are so many teams allowed to enter? Half the amount of teams in it, ensure clubs can play on a Monday night after being in it, and watch it become a reputable comp... the final last night was amazing!

This article is the worst, most Daily Mail, thing I have ever read. How dare those bloody migrants ruin British holidays with their shabby faces and damaged clothes? Stay in your war torn countries you scruffs. I know you're ferrying your infants on dinghies in an attempt to save them from being blown to smithereens, but I'm trying to enjoy a piña colada here and your poverty is putting me off.

Those inconsiderate "boat people" as they call them, ruining everyone's holidays with their moustaches.

"As families – enjoying some summer sun with their kids during the half term break – relax on sun loungers on the beach, just a yards away scores of migrants have set up camp, sleeping on cardboard boxes with rubbish strewn everywhere."

One group is on holiday on sun loungers, the other are sleeping on cardboard boxes, and we're meant to sympathise with the former?!

The worst bit may be "The harbourside has become an unofficial washing line with baby clothes and grubby-looking scarves laid out along the shoreline. Baby bottles and towels litter the area."

Babies are left in the street, nowhere to live, trying to escape a war torn country? Eurgh, but look at the messy bottles and towels they're leaving behind. Get rid of them!

should run an experiment where the migrants act like young british people for a week. stagger aorund drunk, vomit and piss in alleyways, harass women, indecently expose themselves on a nightly basis, chant really loud at night, throw plastic furniture into pools, get into fights, have sex everywhere with everyone, and see how that gets reported.

'It’s awkward. I’m not going to sit in a restaurant with people watching you’

      - Anne and Tony Servante, from Manchester, say they won't be coming back next year

They were looking at you because you're quite overweight and still trying to shovel huge kebabs into your wobbly jowels. To be honest Anne, people in the UK would be watching you too.

a saw a stat the other day that more than 50% of gamers are female, so on that basis it makes a lot of sense.
surely from EA's point of view it's guarenteed a load of extra sales from a pretty simple addition

            god so would I.

EA are truly living up to their worst customer service on Earth tag.

1/3 games for me are cancelled as the game begins because we don't have 'the same squad file'. Why not ensure everyone online has the same squad file before finding me a game EA?

that's what it is i think, the boom in mobile gaming etc. i really doubt console gaming is anywhere near that split (53% female to 47% male) purely from the females i know.

in general i've always found it odd how gaming feels like a sub-culture when the number of people who 'game' should make it one of the biggest cultures out there

I've heard that one before and agree it's excellent as well. I only really started to get properly into Joy Division last year at it's astonishing the amount of amazing songs they produced at such a young age and in such a short space of time. Obviously Ian gets most of the credit and Hooky had some brilliant baselines but I think Stephen Morris made the band come together and is an outstanding drummer.

If I was to set up a mini league next year, £5 buy in (paid through paypal), cap the number of entrants at 40 or so, do you reckon people would be interested?

Or put off paying into a relatively unknown persons account?

Jonty has indicated FFS would be okay with this, and would endorse the league, just wondered peoples thoughts?

Goes without saying, but I am too big a FF nerd to consider ripping off similarly minded fans of the game!
