The Hall of Fame Update

With the 2014/15 season behind us and anticipation for the new campaign building, it’s time to reveal the latest update to our Live Hall of Fame standings and the Top 10 best managers amongst the Fantasy Football Scout community.

The Hall of Fame (HoF) is a ranking system which we apply to everyone who takes part in our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) mini-leagues – both the free and the members league. Basically, this tracks the performances of every manager over each of the seasons they have participated and awards a “HoF rating” accordingly – the “Career” version of the Hall of Fame is viewable to all via this link.

If you’re wondering what the HoF is all about, you can read the FAQ below for a quick guide. Alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to Mark and its creator, Chris Atkinson, talk you through it.

The Hall of Fame Top 10

Ville Ronka retains his spot at the top of the Hall of Fame after cementing 277th place in the overall FPL rankings in 2014/15. This was his fourth top-1,000 FPL finish – indeed, in his seven seasons as a FPL manager, Ville has never finished outside of the top 5,000. During 2014/15, he took just five hits as he once again justified his tag as FPL’s top performing manager.

Nick (aka Triggerlips) notched up his fourth top-1,000 finish in FPL with a rank of 592 at the end of the 2014/15 season. This propelled him from sixth in our HoF rankings at the end of last season to second this year. After a poor first three seasons from 2007/8 to 2009/10, in which his lowest FPL finish in the rankings was 223,632, his last five years have been nothing short of remarkable, with a rank of 35th spot in 2012/13 the pinnacle.

Another to finish in the top 1,000 in 2014/15 is Mustafa Bialk, who leaps from 11th spot in our HoF at the end of last season to third this time round. As with Nick, he is another to find the right formula for success after a slow start to his Fantasy management career. After failing to breach the top 10,000 in his first four years, a finish of 317th in 2011/12 lit the touch paper for success. Since then, his end-of-season FPL rankings were 1,002, 310 and 456 in 2014/15.

One of the biggest climbers in our HoF is Martin Button, who moves from 25th place to fourth after finishing in 266th place in FPL in 2014/15. In nine years, this was his highest FPL finish and his third top-1,000 rank. A blip in 2013/14 where he finished in 18,376 is the only time he has failed to make the top 5,000 in FPL since 2008/9.

Derek Simpson is another riser, moving from 17th to fifth after finishing in 593rd spot in 2014/15. In eight seasons, this was his third highest placing, after ending up in 38th place in 2012/13 and 500th in 2009/10.

The ascent of Simon Walsh is incredible. He moves from 82nd to sixth in our end of season HoF rankings after finishing 95th in FPL at the end of 2014/15. In his four years as an FPL manager, he has ranks of 711, 16, 103 and, incredibly, 38th in his debut campaign.

Alianto Henry shoots into the top ten in our Hall of Fame from 51st to seventh. His 2014/15 rank of 164 was his second highest in five seasons playing FPL. As with Simon Walsh he is another fast learner, having finished his debut 2010/11 campaign with a rank of 23.

In eight is Martin Gupta, who is another dramatic climber in our Hall of Fame, after finishing with a HoF rank of 53 at the end of the 2013/14 campaign. The 2014/15 season saw his third top-1,000 finish in four seasons as an FPL manager. Martin’s debut FPL end-of-season rank of 46th in 2011/12 is his highest finish so far.

Craig Johnson (aka Bouncebackability) moves from 71st to ninth in our HoF rankings. His highest end-of-season finish of 64 in 2014/15 after nine years as an FPL manager was the reason for his ascent. Since starting in 2006/7, he has six top-5,000 finishes under his belt.

In tenth is Jon Sumner (aka Jinswick), who gave the 2014/15 Champion Simon March a real run for his money on the final Gameweek of the season. His decision to draft in hat-trick hero Theo Walcott pushed him to second in the overall FPL rankings. This means he is our HoF top ten’s highest climber, having finished in 338th place at the end of the 2013/14 season.

Honourable Mentions…

Matthew Martyniak (aka “Spiderm4tt”) leads the charge for the former FPL Champions. He has done his upmost to dispel the myth of that “difficult second season” once claiming the crown: he sits in 15th spot in the rankings, having built on his 2012/13 title victory with strong finishes of 995 in 203/14 and 731 last season.

This season’s champion, Simon March (aka “Dufflinks”), ranks next in 37th – his strongest finish prior to this past season was a rank of 3833 back in 2012/13.

The 2010/11 Champion, Chris McGurn returned a healthy rank of 4205 in the last campaign, boasting his HoF rating and climbing just inside the top 100 in 99th spot. Chris has finished inside the top 10,000 in every season since he was introduced to the FPL back in 2008/09.

Tom Fenley’s form hasn’t been quite so consistent. The 2013/14 champion famously committed Wildcard suicide this past season, a factor which contributed to an FPL finish of 11709, dropping his HoF rank to 737th.

Hall of Fame FAQ

How is my rating calculated?
The “HoF Rating” is based on your points scores from previous FPL seasons, with the latest season weighted the heaviest and each corresponding season weighted at roughly 70% that of the previous season. So, in other words, those who performed best in 2014/15 will receive a bigger HoF Rating boost from those who did best in 2006/07. The “HoF Ranking” even allows for those with missing years, adapting the formula accordingly to allow these managers to rank alongside the veterans of the FPL.

How do I join the Hall of Fame
Simply sign up to our leagues next season, either the Fantasy Football Scout Classic League or, if you’re a member, the Members Classic League – the code will available on the dashboard of the Members Area once the FPL game re-opens for registration.

How do I find myself in the Hall of Fame?
The search box at the top of the ranking tables allows you to search by surname or by FPL player ID.

What if I don’t want to be listed?
Either notify us via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk or simply leave the Fantasy Football Scout league and you’ll be removed on the next update.

When does the Hall of Fame get updated?
The Career table is available to all and is updated at the end of each season to display the latest rankings. The Live version of the Hall of Fame is updated regularly using the latest season data.

The Development of the Hall of Fame

Chris Atkinson, the creator of the Hall of Fame, has been working on some ideas to tweak the algorithm involved.

We’ve not yet implemented these changes and, instead, we plan to publish a follow-up article to talk through the proposals and gather your feedback.

Look out for this article last this week – we welcome your views.

      Team tactics this year?

      At least one Che defender.

      Sanchez, Haz, Aguero must haves.

      Tons of fillers.

      Rotating keepers.

Take as few hits as possible and bank double FT's.

And it's as simple as that folks, ha.

Seriously though, what are your main tactics this year?

Love the way you've replied to yourself. Lonely?

Haz/sanch/aguero prob 2 of the 3 to stick within budget esp if you want a Chelsea defender.

Rest seems logical. Need prices then the fun can commence.

Might be able to do without Sanchez with other viable arsenal options but Haz and Aguero are too lethal. Cue Aguero hammy strain first game.

Yep. Fabregas could be an option instead of hazard though.

            Ozil/etc instead of Sanchez

            Only silva instead of aguero

Which is he worst swap? I'd say aguero if fit and playing is a must, hazard and Sanchez nice, but could be deputised well enough for the 2m+ you'd save.

        Good question.

It would be really nice if there were 5 ubers that supplied a regular supply of cleenies to allow us to afford Kun et al.

I probably need to use less hits.

I ma seriously thinking of Myhill and Foster if they come in at 9.5, that's a steal.

Otherwise the usual 3-4-3 and play a CHS defender everyweek. The uber fiifth midfielder will also remain.

Max out on the frontline an annual priority.

Yea agreed. There's always an uber 5th mid, sometimes they take a little time to materialise but they're there. Interested to see what price people like Grealish come in, who made a late impact.

I don't know much about the newly promoted teams so dunno if any of them are worth a punt for uber defenders?

Not too sure as yet. They will probably need to time. I like how WBA rot with Bournemouth but don't trust BTH yet.

  3. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?

    8 years, 9 months ago

Hey guys! So I'm going to be taking part in an auction draft league this year. For those purposes, I was ranking forwards according to who I think will do best next season.

This is the order I came up with atm:

    Aguero, Sergio - MCI
    Diego Costa - CHE
    Kane, Harry - TOT
    Rooney, Wayne - MUN
    Giroud, Olivier - ARS
    Sturridge, Daniel - LIV
    Benteke, Christian - AVL
    Lukaku, Romelu - EVE
    Gomis, Bafetimbi - SWA
    Austin, Charlie - QPR
    Depay, Memphis - MUN
    van Persie, Robin - MUN
    Sakho, Diafra - WHU
    Murray, Glenn - CRY
    Pelle, Graziano - SOU
    Berahino, Saido - WBA
    Cisse, Papiss Demba - NEW
    Vardy, Jamie - LEIC
    Bojan - STK
    Diouf, Mame Biram - STK
    Ulloa, Leonardo - LEIC

Do you think that's accurate? Or would you rate certain players differently?

impossible to know at this stage im afraid, so many things can change etc

Only thing i would say is Aguero is clearly top but even he could suffer an injury hit season again

Austin isnt even in the league...
      Depay probably a mid...

tough to decide at this stage

While I'd agree with your sentiment, these are simply projections.

Despite a variety of factors which can change the list - I was just wondering how you would rate them right now (as once I finalize that, I'll start valuing the players). I will be rearranging/revaluing as things change leading up to the auction.

(I assumed Austin will be signed by a mid-tier EPL team in this case).

is it a draft league where you have to keep the same players season long?

I would look to get the 100% nailed players who arn't injury prone like the Sun Dream team game gears towards if that's the case.

          I.e Lukaku, Kane, Rooney

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

Yup, it is. You can trade them to other players etc but essentially you're looking at season keepers.

That's a huge factor for me as well but Aguero's potential outweighs that despite the injury worries for me.

I was thinking that. Honestly only rated him so highly because of Everton's lack of Europa. How low would you drop him?

And would you rearrange any others?

I had the same suspicion on the most part. That said, Kane is a shot-beast in the mould of Aguero and Suarez. Guys who take so many shots usually end up doing pretty well (apart from Balotelli).

Only reason I left him that high up TBH. In any case, it's not as if the next best set of forwards (Rooney, Giroud, Sturridge) don't have their own issues.

As soon as the form dips the amount of shots taken will too though. Kane would be one to avoid for me in an auction game as every top dick and harry will be going for him too.

Massive falling out when LVG was technical director at Ajax when Koeman was manager. If I remember correctly, the board sacked LVG and sided with Koeman. Totally different styles of management mean that LVG sees Koeman as weak, because of his desire to gently manage players , whereas Koeman thinks LVG is overtly dictatorial. It's a right mess.

I'd argue that his asking price is a little high and he hasn't played enough at the very top to warrant it. Makes more sense to get experience and proven ability at the very top level.

United are more ambitious than that, Germans like Schwinsteiger adjust a lot better than say Brazilians, Italians and Spaniards. We need experience for the Champions league and to help develop what is still a very young side.

I've always wondered if SAF had a thing about Germans, it is very peculiar.

Things are different under LVG now of course, and as we can see, many Germans have been successful in English football.

Following up from above, I've ordered a list of midfielders for a auction draft league scenario.

Would you change anything around here? Keep in mind, this is usually points over a whole season. The only difference in this league is that there is no BPS (that's what I picked Sanchez over Hazard).

    Sanchez, Alexis - ARS
    Hazard, Eden - CHE
    Silva, David - MCI
    Fabregas, Cesc - CHE
    Walcott, Theo - ARS
    Ozil, Mesut - ARS
    Mata, Juan - MUN
    Cazorla, Santiago - ARS
    Ramsey, Aaron - ARS
    Yaya Toure - MCI
    Mane, Sadio - SOU
    Sterling, Raheem - LIV
    Oscar - CHE
    Sigurdsson, Gylfi - SWA
    Coutinho, Philippe - LIV
    Di Maria, Angel - MUN
    Puncheon, Jason - CRY
    Eriksen, Christian - TOT
    Henderson, Jordan - LIV
    Chadli, Nacer - TOT
    Milner, James - MCI
    Schneiderlin, Morgan - SOU
    Herrera, Ander - MUN

As mentioned above, still a lot of uncertainty regarding many of these players, especially this far off from season start (sigh...).

One thing I would like to point out straight away though is Jordan Henderson, really think he should be higher up, in the Mane/Sterling/Oscar-bracket. Rest seems kind of alright, Milner in Liverpool though, not City.

I know about the uncertainty - don't really have much option but start setting up the list from now.

Way I figure, once I'm done with it - I can tweak it based on what changes.

        Agreed on Henderson actually.

Yeah, copied the list from last year so I think City was left there. Would you have moved Milner up further?

Neh, don't think there's much potential there. I can see him figuring more as a LWB or bench fodder, but I wouldn't know really.

The list is a good start though, I've been discussing with some friends to set up a draft league ourselves. How are you doing yours? Are you using a site, or just a spreadsheet and the FPL point scores?

I use Fantrax. It's amazing. The UI is average but the website let's you customize everything. Like, every single feature.

We use a custom scoring system - fairly similar to FPL with a few tweaks to give defensive midfielders and defenders a little boost.

If you want, I can share how our league is set up etc - may help you?

Overall though, I'd recommend it blindly. Had way more fun in the draft than in FPL (despite a good season in FPL) last season.

Yup, Hazard/Sanchez are about even for me (will try for both, hopefully get one of them).

Assuming Theo sees more game time next season, hope I'm right about that. I thought Mata would be fine? Won't Depay take Young's spot if any?

Wasn't sure if he'd be classed as a mid or forward yet - so hadn't put him in. Where would you have him on this list?

        1. Eze Really?
          • 9 Years

Depay plays far more forward. More likely to be Coleman if the rumors are true. Arsenal Mids are minefield.

Wasn't Young playing on the wings? Thought that's where Depay would slot in.

If Coleman comes, he would be taking over Valencia right?

Yeah, that's why Ozil/Sanchez for me are the priorities. Those two are locks.

No, mostly just realistic compared to other fans who get giddy with every single thing that starts with "Sky sources.....", as was the case with Vidal, Thiago Alcantara, Ronaldinho, etc. I've learnt the hard way not to get excited about United signings until they've been confirmed by the club.

All signs pointed to Clyne wanting a move to United, we can offer more money, equally regular first team football and potential CL. Why exactly would he choose Liverpool?

He has very good friends at Liverpool and that is one of the reasons that has been going round as to why he signed for us. It's arrogant of you to think to assume that he would just sign for Utd if you wanted him.

Agree. Compared to Liverpool United can offer a) a better team, b) CL football and c) more money.

He wouldn't even get more game time at Liverpool than he would at United.

Arrogant, perhaps. But probably true. It seems widely accepted that LVG dropped his interest in Clyne in May.

I don't understand this 'very good friends' stuff? He was probably mates with Luke Shaw too. And all of his friends he's leaving in the current squad, particularly Prowsey.

Yeah I don't see the friendship thing making that much difference. If United had come knocking with CL football and assurances about starts, he'd have bitten their hand off.

If United were interested, whomever he'd have signed for, we'd have got our asking price because it would have generated competition.

18/19 year old Shaw vs 24 year old Clyne. Shaw with a long term contract, Clyne with an expiring one. They'd have paid £15m tops, as per the asking price.

So you'd rather take a gamble on an unknown Brazilian or an overrated Englishman who could not even get in his own team over Chamber the season before last?

If Utd want to ever win titles again then they need to start bringing in title winning quality and Clyne is certainly not that. He may be good enough for the likes of a champions league spot chasing club but if that is the level Utd are shopping at then I think they are really fecked.

I never said Clyne is world-class or something, I just think he provides better value than Coleman when they aren't very far off the same level (Coleman is slightly better admittedly). There are very few full-backs available and anyone is an upgrade on Valencia, so yes I'd rather take a punt on one of those.

I guess you just rate Clyne higher than me. I don't think he is anywhere near Colemans level nor has he the potential to get there either imo.

In a game where small differences make can mean champions league football or europa then I think utd should sign Coleman or someone of that quality.

Look at the difference DDG made last season, if he had not upped his game utd would probably have missed out on CL football for the second year running and if he had upped his game the previous season then Moyes could possibly still be in charge. If you had said that lindgaard was not much different to DDG and said sell DDG then utd would have likely missed out on CL football.

I think that's a rather extreme scenario because nobody (not even United fans) rate(d) Lindegaard, whereas DDG had an outstanding season that he probably won't replicate again (to that extent anyway).

As for Clyne, I don't really rate him that highly. The key point is the lack of alternatives available. I'm not convinced that Everton will part with Coleman and there are few other options around. So, even though Clyne isn't world-class, and I don't think he will develop to be either, he still provides a significant upgrade on Valencia for a reasonable price.

Yeah fair enough. Personally I'd play Jones or Valencia there for all the difference Clyne would make but I get your point.

Good rb's seem to be few and far between these days, I blame the attacking fb fad that world football currently has. It places too much of a premium on attacking attributes of young players possibly allowing good defensive fb's who can adequately attack fall through the net.

Schneiderlin is a top player imo that would act as a Carrick replacement for the next 5 years. As has been proven by our interest in Schweinsteiger, we clearly want a 2nd CM to start ahead of Fellaini as well as a DM. Personally I'd be happy with just Schneiderlin and ADM to get a shot at CM in the 4-3-3.

He's also more injury prone and doesn't provide cover for Carrick. 2 totally different players. Like I said, I'd want a DM and a CM and that's what we're targeting but if I could only get one, it would be a Carrick replacement because that's what proved most costly last season.

So are you suggesting we are only buying Carrick cover? I doubt it. We are after a regular starter to start alongside Carrick. Blind is adequate Carrick cover if he gets injured.

No, I just said we're in the market for both a DM and a CM. As for Blind, he was terrible whenever he played in DM last season. He's far too slow and weak for that position and gets bossed when he plays there. He had his best games at LB last season and although I wouldn't mind seeing him in DM in some easy games (if injuries arise), I would not feel at all comfortable with him covering for Carrick for an extended period of time.

A player who is only cover isn't expected to be as good as the guy he's covering obviously. Needless to say, the idea of finding cover for Carrick is not relevant when considering Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger neither of which would be cover for Carrick.

        I'd agree with you Ryan.

I actually think Wanyama is a more functional player as at least you know he is a defensive midfielder. I think Sneiderlin is a good player alright but he has a bit of the Jermain Jenas about him in that he is box to box but not particularly excellent at either the attacking or the defensive side of the game but more than adequate at both.

Schneiderlin is streets ahead of Wanyama in pretty much every aspect of his game IMO. Can pass, tackle and mark better while he's generally more comfortable on the ball. Think the only thing Wanyama has over him is strength. Obviously we can agree to disagree here but I'd have thought most rate Schneiderlin above Wanyama (again, I could be wrong).

I don't think the gap is as large as you suggest but I'd rate Schneiderlin quite a bit higher, yes. He's not at all like a Jermaine Jenas - his intercepting and tackling game is amongst the best in the league. His forward play requires development but he has good vision and awareness. He definitely has the hallmarks of a better class of player than Wanyama, he has much more subtlety to his game. That said, Wanyama does a different job for us so it's probably not fair to directly compare.

yeah thats what I was trying to get at Lucy, Wanyama might be able to a specific job better than Sneiderlin. As an all round player I would rate Sneiderlin better too but as a defensive midfielder I think I'd take Wanyama.

I think there are different kinds of defensive midfielder. I'd say they were both DMs but both had very different styles. And I think Wanyama's physicality and strength would make you think Wanyama was better at the traditional break-up of play - the stats I've put below imply otherwise. Schneiderlin isn't as disciplined, you're right, but even against the top sides (he did a great job on Fabregas), his rate of recovery is outstanding.

That said, I understand what you mean about Wanyama doing a job for a top side as a disciplined enforcer. Schneiderlin has been very used to being the star of the show, our orchestrator, and he definitely won't be that at United. It will be interesting to see how he adapts.

Against most sides I doubt United will want to play a true holding midfielder, and United have never really had a player of that mould in recent years. It's always been a natural centre midfielder dropping deep, it was Scholes(couldn't tackle to save his life), and now it's Carrick(and Blind when he's injured) who is still questionable defensively and this leaves the defense pretty exposed to counter attacks.

Schneiderlin is still competent enough on the ball to recycle possession although his passing ability isn't as good as a Scholes or Carrick but provides greater defensive awareness and mobility. Can also play alongside Carrick/Blind in the bigger games when more structure is needed and then he can exert his box to box abilities. This is another multi-functional player added to the squad, which is like pornography to van Gaal.

When you put it like that maybe Sneiderlin would fit in with utd better.

I was just thinking of clubs where they have a specific defensive midfielder who needs to play with discipline and be economical with possession. I really think Wanyama would be more suited to this role than Sneiderlin.

I'd say you are right that most rate Sneiderlin higher but that is because he is a lot better going forward. My point is I think Wanyama is better and more disciplined defensively and may do a better job at a big team where he has one role to do than the likes of Sneiderlin who without getting on the ball as much might not be able to make as much of an impact.

A bit like fellaini and how he suffered when he went to Utd first. He was great in the opposition box when everything was aimed at him at Everton but looked a fish out of water when asked to play football in a utd team.

Wanyama is two years younger than Sneiderlin also but this should effect our opinions that much. I still think a wanyama type player in the mould of a makelele or a mascherano can offer more to a big team than a small team as there are enough creative attacking players to carry out that function in the team so they can sit back and add balance and protection to the defence.

Ps I think both players are very good so I am not saying either are rubbish

Even with less game time than W last season (S had a lot of injuries), S outstripped W for interceptions, tackles won and key passes. S only narrowly lost out on percentage of aerial duels one, despite the difference in physical stature.

Yeah those stats would surprise me. He was the one charging around the pitch all the time whereas Wanyama seemed to me anyway to be the one who sat back and protected the back four. As you say different players but since Schneiderlin has improved so much over the last two seasons you would wonder where Wanyama will be in a couple of years? I take it you rate Wanyama too?

I rate Wanyama, yes, definitely. And he's clearly got room for improvement.

But I don't think Schneiderlin has improved that much in the last two seasons (contentious, I know). We have advanced as a team, which has magnified his role, but his stats are very constant throughout the last 3 years. In fact, according to Squawka, his defensive game was at its best when we were struggling in 12/13.

Leaving it too late again. If they wanted to challenge this season then transfer dealings should be wrapped up now. So many teams dropped a lot of points early on last season, whereas Chelsea dominated from the get go because they did their business early, giving Mourinho time for adequate training with a full squad. The lead that they won by was acquired in the first few months of the season. I really don't understand why they didn't get in advanced talks with players and plan ahead at the end of last season, seems silly.

my concern is the amount of players around the 30 age mark that are getting linked to Utd. It's a short term fix to a long term problem.

Damn my HoF has dropped from low 100's to mid 700's after one poor season.

Need a top season next year to try and pull it back a bit.

Has anyone else had a bad season where they dropped followed by a good season where they rose? was the increase big or is it possible to get back to where you were in one season?

United should sign Jenkinson on loan.

But only after the FPL prices come out.

Reports in Italy suggesting Gervinho's move to Al Jazira fell through when he started to ask for 'a private beach and his own helicopter' 😆

“The deal hit a stumbling block because of the excessive demands on his four-year deal,” a senior Jazira source said.

“He started making obscene demands, so the transfer is off. It is better for us to call this transfer off now, rather than live with a player for a few months who is likely to cause problems because of his wage demands.”
