Scout Report – Jose Angel Crespo

Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo became Aston Villa’s fourth defensive recruit of the summer, after arriving earlier today for a reported fee of just £500,000. The 28-year-old follows Mark Bunn, Micah Richards and Jordan Amavi to the Midlands as Tim Sherwood continues to restructure his first-team squad.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Sherwood revealed he’s a long-term admirer of the new recruit:

“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we’re really pleased to secure his signature. He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can’t wait to play for Aston Villa.”

The History

Born in Andalusia, Crespo worked his way up the youth ranks at Sevilla after joining them as a 15-year-old. After two years of training at their academy, he made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos midway through the 2005/06 La Liga campaign. Crespo managed a further two league starts that term, spending the remainder of his time turning out for their reserve outfit.

Crespo earned just 23 first-team appearances at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán over the next three seasons while tallying three goals in 73 outings for the B team. In pursuit of a regular starting berth, the Spain U21 international then made the switch to Racing Santander for the 2009/10 campaign. Unfavoured during his stint with the Cantabria club, Crespo notched just 13 appearances over the course of the season.

Having been released by Sevilla in the summer of 2010, the Spaniard plotted a route to Serie B side Padova, where he chalked up one goal in 43 appearances. He then transferred to Serie A outfit Bologna the following summer, recording just seven appearances (three starts) during his debut campaign with the Red-Blues.

Crespo dropped down to Serie B for the 2012/13 season, carding 14 appearances in a year-long loan spell at Verona. With a return to Bologna harvesting only 10 appearances throughout the 2013/14 campaign, Crespo went out on loan to Cordoba last summer. Despite failing to register a single goal or assist across 27 appearances, Crespo signed a permanent deal with the Spanish club earlier this month before making his move to Villa.

At international level, he made a total of 15 appearances for the Spanish U19, U20 and U21 sides but has never been selected for senior duties.

The Prospects

The versatile Crespo offers Sherwood an option right across the back-four slots. Last season at Cordoba, he started 26 times – 14 as a centre-half, nine at left-back and three of the right of defence – whilst in his final year with Bologna, he primarily lined up on the right of midfield.

Whether he can do enough to justify a starting berth is another matter entirely. Crespo averaged less than 15 appearances per season over the past four years, with his most recent stint at Cordoba marking just the second time in his career that he’s been afforded a prolonged run of starts. Having accrued just 83 outings in the top tier of Spanish and Italian football, he may well prove no more than back-up in a defence that was hit hard by injuries in 2014/15.

Certainly, new boy Jordan Amavi looks nailed-on at left-back, given the significant outlay, and with Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark currently shaping up to be the Villains’ favoured centre-back partnership, one would imagine that Crespo needs to displace Alan Hutton at right-back to earn a spot in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI. Given that Leandro Bacuna also offers an option for that position, it looks by no mean certain that Crespo will find his way into the starting XI.

In terms of fixtures, Sherwood’s side have a decent start, with showdowns against Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six. The fact that Villa conceded 57 times last term – the third worst defence in the top-flight – suggests investment may be hard to come by for Sherwood’s backline regulars.

Setting you back 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Crespo is identically priced to Richards, though the former City defender looks a far more secure pick if you’re looking at cut-price options.

For those prepared to shell out more, Amavi (5.0) netted four goals last term and crafted more key passes (32) than all but seven Premier League defenders. Bacuna, meanwhile, has been stationed on the right of midfield in pre-season and could offer us an out-of-position option – the Dutchman racked up five assists as a right-back in just 983 minutes at the end of last term and also has a share of set-pieces.

Given that the likes of Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the West Brom defence are also available for 5.0, though, it looks very unlikely that many will be prepared to splash out on a porous backline that has plenty of convincing still to do.

Set Piece Takers Update -Your Eagle Eyes Needed

Just added Ross Barkley to Everton's list of penalty takers after his spot kick last night.

Ahead of the new season we are keen to make sure we are as up to date as possible. Feel free to have a look at our latest run down and let us know here if pre season matches have revealed any key changes we need to make.

I've a niggling doubt, Rooney may be given another 'go' to raise his goal tally.

I think Rooney will be on them, that was just late season sillyness by Van Gaal. New season will likely revert back to Rooney

Agree but if he's the 'main' striker, similar to lukaku @ Everton which on current firm I think is a good call by Martinez.

Benteke needs to move from Villa to Liverpool. Not sure Tadic is first choice for SOT after missing one, did someone not take another one after that - maybe JWP - not sure if Tadic was on at the time though.

Also Kane is ahead of Townsend these days.

        Is Kane definitely ahead?

I know Kane took a couple last season but thought that was when Townsend was off the pitch.

Tadic did indeed miss one, JWP took the next one but Tadic was injured when that happened.

Tadic took and scored one at Stamford Bridge after he missed one though, I'd be fairly confident he is still on them 🙂

-I'm inclined to think Cazorla may be over Arteta if both on pitch now.

It's a long time since Puncheon took one for Palace - Chamakh, Jedinak, Gayle, Murray have all taken penalties since Puncheon took (and missed) one against Spurs in 2013/14.

      I also think:
      Liverpool - Hendo/Bentekke
      Norwich - Hoolahan (pitch time)
      Newc - Cisse (transfer/pitch time)
All need monitoring, all in all a lot of anomalies in there, this is nearly as bad as Costas Hammy!!!

I'll add in Benteke once we get a steer on where he is in the penalty taker line up. He could be first, he could be behind Balotelli...who knows at this stage. Logic says he should be either first or deputy taker to Henderson, but will have to wait for clarity.

Will keep an eye on all of those too.

Cheers keep em coming. Also be aware that we can only put down definites. So for example until Rooney takes a penalty with Mata on the pitch or LVG says Rooney is the main taker Mata is as far as we know the current first choice. Same with Townsend over Kane...until we see otherwise Townsend is ahead of Kane.

For Watford, unfortunately Tozser has said he's leaving the club 🙁
Abdi scored some cracking free kicks in 2012-13 so he might be back on them again
Some of the new signings could end up being on set pieces too but will need to wait and see (and watch pre-season games of course!)

I don't like CHE double D - too expensive and you might lose on some other valuable Defs.
      Mid is great
Strike force is imbalanced. I'd prefer a mid priced striker i.e Giroud, Pelle, Lukaku, Benteke over one of your Sakho or Deeney

That's fair enough. All personal preference really, aye.

I really want to start with Silva, I think he'll have another terrific season and even if he doesn't perform too well in the first three gameweeks his fixtures from GW4 onwards are sublime.

warming to your strategy of Mahrez as a 4th mid enabler....the more i think about it, the more it makes sense with Aguero an inevitability and Rooney quite an important member of our squad cores.

Certainly not, I want Silva from GW4 onwards and that's why he is in the team from the get go 🙂

Well, assuming I keep the 1.5 ITB it's only a 1m downgrade required, but atm I'm looking at Ozil.

Interesting. Silva Aguero affects balance too much imo. almost 25% of budget to 2 players!

You think? They are two of the best players in the league and are well worth the outlay considering their fixtures from that point on IMO.

In terms of balance, since they are so expensive I can easily downgrade if need be, can't go the other way though!

I've seen many teams with 14m spent on 3rd and 4th mid. some opt for 2x7m whilst others for less balnce e.g. Mane+Ritchie or even more at 8.5m+5.5m. Basically the question is that what's the best way of using 14m for 3rd and 4th mids?

OK, first (and hopefully last) RMT of the pre-season.

    Butland | Schmeics

    Richards | Cedric | Ivan | Ward | Mings

    Grealish | Mata | Hazard | Ozil | Ritchie

    Gru | Benteke | Pelle

I've been struggling with the Arsenal mid option (Ozil vs. Ramsey vs. Theo)
Also the Man U. mid (Depay vs. Mata)
Fairly set on the rest of it though until Aguero and Sanchez come back into play

What do you guys think? Anything you would change?

Thanks for that, yeah it's personal preference. Having watched a bit of Championship last season Ritchie looks a real threat, but it may not pan out!

Plan for Aguero or Sanchez will be to downgrade one of the strikers to a 5.5 or similar and upgrade premium mid/striker

    Thoughts on latest draft:

    --------------Ruddy/Schmeichel------------

    -------Ivanovic - Koscielny - Cedric------

    Hazard - Henderson - Sterling - Depay

    --------Benteke - Rooney - Deeney-----

    Subs: Rudd/Hennessey/Schwarzer - Huth - Targett - Wanyama

Plans to bring in an arsenal mid once it is clearer who is on form and nailed. Also potential to downgrade Depay/Sterling and do Rooney ---> Aguero for GW4

I would wait on Depay impact, and pick one of the ARS mids. Caz and Ozil look great whichever you pick. If you have the spare cash, and Wally plays in the Shield I would go for him.

I would look at some better SOT options. They have terrific fixtures. However Wanyama will not bring in the points and due to his high ownership rate he will drop down in price quickly, thus hurting your OTV and the ability to keep up with the rest. I would downgrade Depay to Mane, and switch Wanyama to some other cheapo or even upgrade.

I've gone for Bentaleb for precisely this reason. Spurs have sold a few midfielders (Capoue, Paulinho, Stambouli) so I feel this only solidfies his place in central midfield. He got 2,200 minutes last year and I'm fully expecting that to increase this year
