Spot the Differential – Gameweek 4

Bournemouth and Villa’s wide men are on our radar in this week’s scour for overlooked Fantasy options, whilst Tottenham’s out-of-position defender also plays a part in the Gameweek 4 thinking.

Max Gradel

Having notched 17 times in 31 outings for Ligue 1 outfit Saint Etienne last season, Max Gradel returns to former club Bournemouth in fine scoring form. The 6.0-priced midfielder – who sits at a 0.5% ownership – was a peripheral figure in the Fantasy Premier League until he served up a brace of assists during the Cherries’ 4-3 victory over West Ham last weekend.

Since being handed his first start in Gameweek 2, Gradel places second for shots (three) behind Matt Ritchie (seven) among the south coast club’s midfield contingent, though he’s tallied the most penalty-box touches (six) and key passes (five) across that stretch. Although the latter’s Fantasy allure is intensified by his share of free-kicks, Gradel posted a far superior shot conversion rate (16.6%) than Ritchie (9.9%) last term, which suggests he’s more of a clinical finisher.

Bournemouth will be buoyant in the wake of their maiden top-flight victory, so recruiting from their attacking corps looks like an astute strategy in the coming weeks. Eddie Howe’s troops embark on an excellent quintet of fixtures (LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT), ensuring that this differential pick is afforded ample time to flourish.

Jack Grealish

Having recovered from a hamstring injury picked up during Aston Villa’s pre-season tour, Jack Grealish was handed a start on the left of a front three against Crystal Palace on his return to action. The 19-year-old Academy product then went on to play the full 121 minutes of the Villains’ midweek League Cup win over Notts County, getting him one step closer to peak fitness.

Although Scott Sinclair’s hat-trick hogged the headlines, Grealish also turned in a fine performance against the League Two opposition, serving as Villa’s most creative outlet and bagging two assists in the process. In light of the fact that Tim Sherwood’s men rank second-bottom for chances created (17) over the opening trio of matches, the former Spurs head coach will be desperate to funnel their play through the winger, augmenting his appeal as a Fantasy asset.

Priced at 5.4, Grealish occupies a bracket that’s devoid of any sure-fire bets (Riyad Mahrez has shot up to the 6.0-mark), so there’s value to be had in unearthing a hidden gem. A home tie against Sunderland – who’ve conceded more goals (eight) than any side this term – should certainly afford Grealish plenty of possession to showcase his burgeoning talents.

Edit: Grealish has emerged as a late doubt for Villa’s meeting with Sunderland with reports stating that he has sprained an ankle in training.

Eric Dier

Eric Dier has been deployed in the double pivot alongside Nabil Bentaleb and – more recently – Ryan Mason this term, furnishing Fantasy managers with an out-of-position prospect. Although the former Sporting Lisbon centre-back is yet to launch a marauding run of the ilk that saw him net a late winner in the opening Gameweek of last term, he’s already found the net in his previous home appearance against Stoke and ranks joint-second among defenders for headed attempts (two).

Spurs are yet to register a clean sheet this campaign, but there were signs of improvement during their visit to Leicester. Mauricio Pochettino’s men limited the high-flying Foxes to just seven shots inside the box, one big chance and two attempts on target, implying that Tottenham forced Leicester into unfavourable shooting positions.

The Lilywhites conceded just one goal against Everton in the previous campaign, winning the home leg 2-1 and triumphing 1-0 at Goodison Park in the final Gameweek. Notwithstanding their dominant performance away to Southampton, the Toffees have mustered just 10 attempts on target this term, offering hope for Dier’s shut-out prospects as the hosts look to clinch their first win of the season.

      Surely it's time that the 30% with Augero do some damage to the 70% that don't.

      I'm aware that when there is a clear favourite in the captain poll we often endure a blank and it ends in tears. Nevertheless I'm hopefully about this one and have even been invoking help from above:

      Kun bay ya, my Lord, Kun bay ya;
      Kun bay ya, my Lord, Kun bay ya;
      Kun bay ya, my Lord, Kun bay ya,
      O Lord, Kun bay ya.

          Yeah, I remember that, it was against spurs and he scored 4 and missed a penalty. I didn't have him at all then! If I remember correctly it was his first game back from injury and he wasn't that highly owned at the time so don't think he was a run away favourite in the captain poll

          As a separate point - how did you feel having your FF captain vs the team you support?

      @Jonty here is a rough for you regarding Tadic.
      Replaced Henderson after GW2 due to injury then Walcott to Tadic for a hit.
      GW3 Tadic didn't play due to some blood problem so I switched him out for Silva again for a hit because I had already tranferred out Koscielny and Ivanovic and he had already dropped from 7m to 6.9m.
      Tadic scored a brace last night and on top of that my Aguero captain was a fail after chickening out and not giving the armband to Kolarov.
      Adding up the points for hits and Tadics high score yesterday makes me not even want to check my ML rank 😛

      Probably the correct line up for this week but in general would look to get rid of one of Coutinho / Benteke as LIV have only scored 2 goals in 3 games. Will be interesting to see how they do today against a weak WHU but I think doubling up on LIV attack isn't a great strategy

      No doubt Pedro is a good player and will grace my fPL team before too long but people are forgetting the goal was a deflection and the assist was a shot.

      Shaqiri for next weeks sensation or Mata if he takes the no. 10 role with Januzaj injured

        Think Herrera/Fellaini to come in as a no. 10. There'd be no one to replace Mata on the right if he moves.

    With a guaranteed clean sheet is Kolarov getting a 4 point head start on Aguero today?

      You may as well say with a guaranteed goal is Aguero getting a 4 point head start on Kolarov today?

      It's not guaranteed. This is what people who captained Baines used to say to justify captaining him.

      There's no thing as a guaranteed Clean Sheet.. The market for a CS is rarely more than 55% in the betting world.
      Now please dont bookmark this and say i told you so if they do get a CS cause like i said it is always a 50-50

      Aguero scored more goals than City got clean sheets last season so I don't get the "guaranteed" bit

      There is some real twisted logic going on here but yeah Kolarov is 4 points ahead of Aguero before kick off, 8 if you captain him and he'll get bonus (2 at least) so is actually a minimum 12 point head start.

        this is not a bad point, but just not put over in the best way, there is a strong possibility they could keep a cleanie and Kolarov seems to be a Bap magnet but then Aguero also has potential to wreak havoc

          Just for clarity my post was completely tongue in cheek and intended to show how ludicrous the original post was. All players start on 0 and the concept of some having a 'head start' on others is fundamentally flawed

    Hey Guys! Who to bench: Richards (vs SUN), Gomez (WHU) or Payet (LIV)?

    Pool has 3 clean sheets, but West Ham has been scoring a lot and Richards might be more likely to get bonus points in case of a clean sheet.

    Thanks!

    I am pretty set to do Depay -> Coutinho for a better set of coming fixtures. However, someone made a point that they both had the similar shooting accuracy, but Depay has set-piece duty.

    Should I keep the plan A or better do something else ?

    A) Depay -> Coutinho (free)
    B) Depay + Payet -> Pedro + Westwood
    C) Save FT ... play Depay and bench Payet

        Cos someone else told you it's not? People said it was two knee knee-jerk to jump on Mahrez, and his value has risen 0.6 since I bought him and he's collected me 20 points in two weeks.

        I'm on Pedro this week. Hope all the cautious buyers are wrong again... 🙂

          I did jump on Mahrez train and enjoyed the points & price from Gw2 as well.

          I'm just reluctant to sell Payet for funding Pedro.
