The Digest – Gameweek 13

Roberto Firmino announces himself to Fantasy managers as Liverpool sweep aside City at the Etihad. Everton continue to take full advantage of their favourable schedule, whilst Sergio Aguero’s case for inclusion is dampened by a number of in-form frontmen.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Liverpool’s stunning 4-1 triumph at the Etihad has belatedly brought Roberto Firmino onto our radars.

Afforded just three starts in Brendan Rodgers’ eight matches in charge, the Brazilian had failed to justify the hefty £28m transfer fee that the Reds handed to Hoffenheim last summer. Indeed, Firmino’s assist in the Reds’ win at Chelsea – his first start under Jurgen Klopp – was his first attacking points of the season.

Handed a central role in Liverpool’s front three on Saturday evening, we finally saw flashes of the talent that served up 23 goals and 21 assists in his final two seasons in the Bundesliga. Firmino’s understanding and link-up play with Philippe Coutinho cut City apart time and again, and although Klopp was able to name both Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge on the bench at City, Firmino looks undroppable on this sort of form.

Sitting in just 1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams to Coutinho’s 20%, Firmino seems a ready-made differential with the fixtures to flourish as the Merseysiders gain momentum under Klopp. Up next, the Reds go head-to-head with Swansea, Newcastle, West Brom, Watford, Leicester and Sunderland in the next six, affording the Brazilian the chance to show just why Liverpool were prepared to splash the cash.

The Team

An emphatic home win over Aston Villa took Everton’s tally to ten goals in their last two Goodison outings as Roberto Martinez’ side racked up the Fantasy points.

The 4-0 victory highlighted the options from back to front in Roberto Martinez’ side. Seamus Coleman delivered a ten-point return – his second double-figure haul of the season – as the hosts chalked up a first shut-out in seven attempts. Whilst the in-form Gerard Deulofeu had an off-day, Ross Barkley delivered two goals and an assist for his 24% owners – priced at 6.9, he’s now level with Alexis Sanchez on 72 points.

Up top, Romelu Lukaku continues to shrug off the inconsistency that has blighted him in previous years. The big Belgian’s brace means he’s now netted in three successive league outings – indeed, he’s blanked just twice in the last seven in a run that has served up seven strikes, three assists and 11 bonus points from Gameweek 7 onwards.

Despite the return of Sergio Aguero, Lukaku is the number one transfer target in FPL right now, with over 125,00 managers snapping him up since the weekend. It’s no surprise to see that Barkley leads the way for midfielders (108,000+) ahead of the weekend trip to Bournemouth. With Palace, Norwich, Leicester, Norwich and Stoke to follow the Dean Court clash, Martinez’ men certainly have the schedule on side to continue their weekend showing.

The Talking Point

Sergio Aguero’s return from injury was greeted with much fanfare last week but, in spite of netting against Liverpool, the City forward was somewhat overshadowed in the race for our attentions up front.

The aforementioned Lukaku’s brace was equalled by Harry Kane, whose recent renaissance continued at home to West Ham as he took his tally to seven goals in the last four Gameweeks. Similar to Lukaku, Kane also a very kind schedule ahead that heightens his appeal – over the next 12 rounds of fixtures, Tottenham play a top-six side just once.

Then there’s Jamie Vardy to consider. The Leicester striker has now scored in ten successive league appearances and although he’s risen in price to 7.4, he still offers outstanding value. Granted, the Foxes’ schedule is somewhat disconcerting (MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv, MCI) over the next six Gameweeks, though it’s worth noting that Claudio Ranieri’s side have fared well against some of the top sides. Leicester have played four of the current top eight and scored twice against Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton and once against Spurs.

Whilst there’s no denying Aguero’s standing as the most explosive captaincy contender in the top flight, the form and fixtures offered by Lukaku and Kane is making a convincing case for those who are somewhat reluctant rip up their squads to accommodate the Argentine.

Given that City have scored just three times in the last four Gameweeks, their downturn in form, allied with Manuel Pellegrini’s need to manage Aguero’s minutes for fear of another relapse, is starting to convince some Fantasy managers that going without the 13.1-priced striker over a hectic festive period could be a very viable tactic.

Anyone here getting Giroud over Kane or Augero 😀 ?

I'm tempted to triple up Arsenal attacking players.

I wouldn't get him in, if you don't own him already. I do own him and happy to sit through those fixtures until I shift for Kane. The rotation threat is a misnomer as he has performed off the bench and Walcott won't be brought straight in for fear of aggravating his injury.

Don't follow the herd on here

Its not so much the rotation threat, but his tendency to lose form and start to miss chances Sandra Redknapp would score from.

Play your own game though, he's certainly in form at the moment.

came in when behrami was suspended for 3 matches, then when that suspension was over the team started playng well and got a couple of wins so it was hard to justify dropping him (i also viewed it as extra punishment to behrami as he could have come back in against arsenal, but his red card was so unprofessional and almost cost the side 2-3 points). anyway last couple of games watson's sloppy passing has crept back in.
only a matter of time imo

Is Aguero worth 3.6 more than Kane?

    Used my transfer. 2.4 itb

    Myhill Mccarthy
    Bellerin Kolarov Rojo Moreno Oxford
    Sanchez KDB Ozil Mane Mahrez
    Vardy Lukaku Ighalo

Sticking with Ighalo for the next three. Or if need be Kane in for a hit next week or Aguero in for 2 hits. The question is, Kane or Aguero in for the xmas period?

    A) Mane and Ighalo to Lanzini and Kane
    B) Mane, KDB and Ighalo to Surman/Lingard, Coutinho/Firmino, Aguero

A leaves me with a stronger bench but obviously no Aguero

Really ridiculous it wasn't given as an assist. Still think he could be a better option than Barkley (but will need to look at the stats further).

He played the same way he has for the last few weeks - incredibly well with very little end product. Two shots on goal in the last seven weeks. Call it three if you want to add the disputed one, that's still not a lot of shooting.

Mesmerising to watch, an absolute superstar in the making and a fantastic piece of business by Everton if they can hold onto him - but I don't think he's much of an FPL option right now.

Fixtures aren't worth much if he doesn't shoot. That game was as good an opportunity as he's going to get; the team dominated and he had his defender easily beaten again and again. And still he took no shots (or one, if you like).

The risk is the opportunity cost of not having a midfielder who will shoot.

All my opinion, of course 🙂 And I'm certainly not saying he's a bad player - far from it. I just think people need to separate the real world from the fantasy on this one.

Though as I say above, if not for a very good save and some dodgy decision making from Opta, he would have wandered away with 2 assists.

That is true. And maybe he's worth it for assists alone. But again, the FPL-relevant stats aren't on par with his obvious talent. In the table of chances created over the last 6 gameweeks, he's 40th among midfielders. I guess some of that is explained away by tough fixtures though.

assists is enough for him imo. the most 'essential' mid in the game right now is living on just assists for almost 3mil extra. ideally goals but exceptions can be made imo if it's a really profilic assister, like siggy or fabregas early last season, or ozil now

Agree in principle. Silva's first season was similar - near enough "essential" through assists alone. But 40th for creating chances seems unlikely to break into that category of player.

serious? wow wouldnt have expected that, looks a huge threat every time i see him, carrying on from where he left off at sevilla last season, albeit i never saw him there. definite assister

To be fair, he's 18th in the last four (i.e. since the better fixtures started) and there isn't a lot in it between him and the top 10 there.

I still think the hype on here is a bit much though, for FPL purposes. No argument on natural, real-world talent.

I would be okay with just assists really. Fair enough, his quantity of chances aren't that high, but I think he creates some real quality ones. At this price it's tough to expect both, while someone like Silva I'd expect a lot of high quality chances.

      • 9 Years

Spicy, I like it. I have the same forward line but took a fairly chunky hit to get it. I think people who don't make the move for an Aguero, Lukaku, Kane frontline now, will find it hard to do so in the future, should they want to, as each of these respective players will likely to rise .3 in he next few weeks. Could be a nice differential having these 3 forwards in a strange sense, as I don't think that many people will go for this front line/be able to, due to the funds required.

I have same midfield but have Barkley instead of Coutinho. How you've managed to get that midfield and forward line, and still managed to get a fairly decent back line I'll never know.

Defence is decent, by no means poor imo, but could be better. I'd be wanting to get a United defender in there as I've never been confident with Everton and Totenham's defence.

Thanks so much for replying mate, sorry i wasn't able to reply sooner. I agree with all what you say, ithink that forward line of kane lukaku and kun is the way to go and best making the move early so well done on getting it as well 🙂

Haha thanks, i think its just because i built up team value a lot and now have had the luxery of splashing the funds.

Yeah i'm not confident with dier anymore as a spurs defender, i should of opted for Toby but ah well.

One of Agueros main draws is the fact you can captain him and thatll be the end of it. but looking at his next 4 games I wouldnt captain him at all -

    SOT sto SWA ars

While SOT and SWA look like great games for Aguero would you captain him over Sanchez (nor) and Kane (NEW) for these games im not sure i would.

Last week I WCd and had my Aguero plan all sorted but the more I think about it im going to go without him until GW18 (SUN).

Is anyone else following the same train of thought?

Arsenal have lost a massively improtant cdm thought & will suffer for it against the big teams

their next 3 are nor/sun/astv though.
I'd take my chances now and worry about the bigger teams when the time comes.

Even if I'm not captaining him I still want him for Swansea. Saying that, I've got a strong attacking 8 at the moment so I'm just wondering if I can stretch that till after Xmas.

Exactly! All you need are players that can match him for points and are better captaincy picks. 🙂

Would anyone think Ake could be a safe bet to play this week/next few? He was giving United fits when he came on, I was quite impressed with him. More tackles than anyone else on the pitch and only played 45 minutes, was bombing forward trying to get crosses into the box.

Also, is it Hennessey's spot to lose now? I just assumed when Speroni was back healthy he'd take over but Speroni hasn't been tagged as injured for probably 3 gameweeks now...

after last night though, Hennessey may well be the one to give way.

      got to be Kolarov.
lei will score, sou are a shadow of themselves right now and Kola is more attacking.
