Scout Scribbles – Sanchez at the Double

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil fire Arsenal to a 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb. Chelsea’s momentum continues in Tel Aviv. Liverpool are hopeful on Philippe Coutinho’s hamstring injury, whilst Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are back in the mix for United tonight.

Sanchez and Ozil Dazzle against Zagreb

Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 home win over Dinamo Zagreb courtesy of an Alexis Sanchez brace and Mesut Ozil header. Sanchez, Nacho Monreal and Joel Campbell all claimed assists in the process. Aaron Ramsey entered the fray at the 67-minute mark, setting him up for a potential return to Premier League action next Gameweek.

Speaking to the club’s official site after the showdown, Arsene Wenger explained that he substituted Olivier Giroud and Hector Bellerin as a precautionary measure in the second half:

“Giroud had a little problem with his ankle over the weekend but I decided to give [him] a breather. Hector Bellerin, I took him off because he had a groin problem just before so I had to take them off meaning I could not take Alexis off. We now have five days to recover.”

Pressed on why he chose to keep Sanchez on for the duration of the match, Wenger said that he moved the Chilean into a central berth to relinquish him of his defensive duties:

“I would have loved to do it tonight (rest Alexis) but I [had] two different options. Once it is 3-0 you are not in a position where you need him to work back and when you put him central up front you can spare a bit of energy. It is not like you have to go up and down. I tried to compromise a little bit and give a break to Giroud and not take a risk with Bellerin.”

The Scout Says: Sanchez’s double and assist serves as a timely reminder of his capacity for explosive returns. The 11.5-priced midfielder has posted four consecutive blanks in the league, prompting a sizeable portion of his 38% ownership to contemplate a straight swap with the red-hot Ozil (nine assists in seven outings) ahead of a trio of favourable match-ups (nor, SUN, avl). Last night’s output also strengthened the case for doubling up on the pair, though, whilst the return of Ramsey – who netted in his last league start before succumbing to injury – will provide an extra layer of nuance to the subject of Arsenal midfield coverage. Despite missing the north Londoners’ previous four league clashes, the Welshman still boasts 11 more attempts and nine more shots on target than Ozil, rendering him one to watch over the Christmas period.

Chelsea Building Momentum

Aided by the hosts’ red card in the 39th minute, Chelsea carded a resounding 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv. Gary Cahill opened the scoring, before Willian doubled the Blues’ advantage with his sixth free-kick goal of the campaign. Oscar and Kurt Zouma added gloss to the scoreline in the final quarter of the match, while the former also joined Baba Rahman in the assist column.

John Terry suffered an ankle injury and had to be replaced by Zouma at the 72-minute mark. Jose Mourinho bemoaned the quality of the pitch in his post-match interview while admitting that Terry is unlikely to feature against Spurs:

“The surface was bad and dangerous. John has an ankle problem that we don’t know yet the dimension of. For John to leave the pitch with the result 1-0 I know already that he is in trouble. My medical department is really good. John is a special guy, with a special desire to recover. But I think to leave the pitch with the result 1-0, I don’t believe too much that he can play (against Spurs).”

Terry wasn’t the only player to fall foul of the supposed substandard playing conditions, as Mourinho revealed that Ramires sustained a muscular injury during Monday’s training session:

“Yesterday we tried to protect (the pitch), we trained just a little bit. But by my surprise Maccabi were training after us, plus the warm-up before the game. The pitch was really bad. Ramires slid and had a muscular injury.”

The Scout Says: Beyond their challenging road derby against Spurs this weekend, Chelsea embark on an alluring quartet of matches (BOU, lei, SUN, WAT). Given that the Blues now have successive wins and clean sheets under their belt, some managers might be enticed by their differential potential over that stretch as the champions’ confidence finally returns after a dire start to the season. Both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard have failed to vindicate their lofty valuations, though Willian, at 6.9, certainly looks a viable candidate for those keen to invest ahead of that fine upcoming stretch. As the cheapest route into the Blues’ backline, the 5.4-priced Zouma – who has started 10 of the last 11 league outings – could enjoy an upsurge of investment in the coming weeks, particularly if Terry is sidelined for any period of time.

Martinez Continues to Be Cautious with Baines

Roberto Martinez has stressed the importance of easing Leighton Baines back into contention. Although the English left-back has recovered from ankle surgery and was afforded a 45-minute run-out for Everton U21s on Sunday, Martinez is wary of welcoming Baines back into the matchday squad until his fitness improves:

“We need Leighton fully fit because when he’s fit and enjoying his football he’s probably one of the best left-backs in world football. We want a big squad and we want that competition for places. Leighton, from a medical point of view, is clear and it’s now about us making sure that we build the match fitness. That’s going to take a bit of time and we need to give him that time to get the best of Leighton for the rest of the season. The challenge now is to get Leighton back fully fit and we’ll take it from there.”

The Scout Says: Priced at 6.1, Baines would rank as the third most expensive viable defender if he could recapture his attacking flair. Last term he placed second among his counterparts for shots on target (nine) and top for key passes (70) – tallying two goals and nine assists along the way – so there’s definite scope for the Merseyside native to factor into our thinking. Ideally, Baines will be afforded a bench role this weekend at Bournemouth, before being reinstated into the starting line-up for a home tie against Crystal Palace. Beyond the Eagles clash, Everton’s subsequent quartet of match-ups (nor, LEI, new, STO) harbour strong clean-sheet potential, bolstering Baines’ case for investment.

Traore Nets Brace for Villa Reserves

Adama Traore netted twice for Aston Villa’s reserves as they ran out 5-2 victors over Fleetwood Town yesterday afternoon.

The Scout Says: Traore made the switch from Barcelona to Villa in a £7 million summer deal but has struggled to exert his influence in the Premier League, carding just four cameo appearances. Although new manager Remi Garde is yet to call up the Spanish winger, he’s well placed to muscle his way into the matchday squad while rotation is rife – perhaps all the more so given that Garde has banished Jack Grealish to train with the development squad after the youngster was pictured partying on the back of the weekend loss at Everton. Regardless, the West Midlanders are devoid of Fantasy appeal at present, having drawn four blanks and conceded 12 goals in their previous six outings. Nonetheless, their schedule from Gameweek 17 through to 25 serves up a procession of agreeable fixtures, ensuring that we’ll keep an eye on any emerging differentials once Garde settles on his likely regulars.

United Attackers Back for PSV Clash

Louis van Gaal confirmed that Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini are back to full health ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League encounter against PSV Eindhoven, but Phil Jones and Ander Herrera remain sidelined through injury. That being said, the Dutch boss insisted that the former trio will have to prove their fitness in training to be considered for a starting role this evening:

“No. That is not automatic. It is decision of the manager. I compare these players with each other and take into account how fit they are and how fit they showed they are in the training session. Fitness is the most important thing and he has to show his fitness and then he has all the privileges that he has. Fellaini and Rooney and Martial have to show on the training ground – their fitness – and then I have to compare players to see who the best for our game plan. Every match is the same procedure.”

The Scout Says: In spite of the Red Devils’ excellent run of fixtures through to Boxing Day (lei, WHU, bou, NOR, sto), it’s hard to make a cogent case for their forwards: Rooney looks a shadow of his former self and has recently been shifted back into the number-ten berth, while Martial averages a shot every 63 minutes and hasn’t scored since Gameweek 6. Ultimately, Man United would need to make vast improvements in the final third (they rank second bottom for attempts in the last six Gameweeks) to compete with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane in our three-man strike forces.

Reds Optimistic on Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho could yet be fit in time for Liverpool’s home clash against Swansea this weekend after scans revealed the hamstring complaint that forced him off against City last Saturday is a minor one:

The Scout Says: Coutinho has been one of the prime beneficiaries of Jurgen Klopp’s nascent reign on Merseyside, bagging four goals, one assist and nine bonus points in his last three starts. Since Klopp’s first match in charge in Gameweek 9, the twinkle-toed Brazilian charts top among midfielders for attempts (17) and second for shots on target (seven). He’s certainly profited from the Reds’ increased production on the distribution front; over the last four Gameweeks, no side fashioned more key passes (55). Riding high in the wake of a 4-1 win at Manchester City, Coutinho will be relishing the opportunity to take on a Swans rearguard that’s recorded just one clean sheet in its last 11 outings. Looking past that match-up, Liverpool round off the year with a quintet of favourable fixtures (new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun), which bodes well for Coutinho’s attacking prospects, though team-mate Roberto Firmino (8.0) looks the likely target to turn to if his compatriot fails to make it in time for the weekend.

Defoe Expected to Be Fit for Weekend

Reports indicate that Jermain Defoe has avoided damage to his ankle after being forced off late during Sunderland’s win over Palace on Monday evening. The striker – who grabbed the only goal of the Selhurst Park encounter – is expected to be available for the weekend visit of Stoke.

The Scout Says: Sam Allardyce’s decision to switch back to 3-5-2 against the Eagles clearly benefitted Defoe. His winner means he has now scored in each of his last two starts for the Wearsiders – both times in a two-man frontline. Whilst his 5.2 price tag is favourable, the same cannot be said for Sunderland’s fixtures – with Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Liverpool in the next six, few will be prepared to invest in Big Sam’s side, despite the fact they now have two wins and as many clean sheets in the last four.

Son isn't nailed on atm. Lamela is back. I've been impressed with him since he signed for spurs. Wasn't too involved on Sunday though he could have scored a couple of goals. Then you have selfish Kane not passing to him when through on goal

Lamela has not been bad so far this season either, so that position is always going to be a bit of a scrap to nail down.

I like Son and he is definitely on my radar, but have a niggle over him being nailed too.

        What about this?

        -------- Kane ------
        Son , Eriksen, Lamela
        ------ Alli, Dier -----

Ah I shouldn't grumble, Mahrez did well for me this week and I'm slowly picking up. It was Sanchez and Aguero who wrecked me in fact, must have gotten about 7 or 8 blanks from them this season when captained.

Yeah, suspect a lot in the same boat with Sanchez and Kun.

These are the 'explosive' players that we are supposed to captain tho right? It's just frustrating that Sanchez hasn't been chipping in with the odd assist and bap say. It really has just been 2s and 3s

Aye, it is quite a pain. I've slowly switched over to more consistent but less explosive players like Mahrez, just because they're reliable. I won't captain Sanchez any time soon. Kun is another story, I'll consider him most weeks, but I think with a bit more caution until I'm certain he's at his best.

Yeah iv captained Mahrez a few times.

Despite him being just about the most consistent player in the game I can't quite see myself captaining Ozil tho? Pretty sure I'll give Sanchez the honours for SUN, but we'll see

I've actually got a fair amount of trust in Ozil. And he has been unlucky with a few attempts on goal, against West Brom he thundered one off the post.

          Latest research from RedLightning.

No one in the Live Hall of Fame top 100 is in the overall top 1,000 in FPL this season.

101st HoF placed Andy (of Mods and Contribs Lg leader fame) is the highest placed top 1,000 manager.

      8. Should we consider Benteke?
        Le Limpar
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 5 months ago

I was impressed with Aguero’s goal last weekend, but not half as impressed as I was with Liverpool. Really tempted to go for Benteke as well as one of Firmino/Coutinho and back them over their excellent Winter schedule.

I am bedded in with Lukaku and Kane, so my Benteke punt would come at the expense of Aguero. I’ve been trying to take a deep(ish) look at how these two scenarios weigh up (The Liverpool double-up vs. Aguero) - using projected points per 90. It's massively flawed of course, but I've tried to make it fair.

First let’s look at fixtures and my likely captains during that period:

        Liverpool scenario:
Benteke - SWA new WBA wat LEI sun
Firminio / Coutinho - SWA new WBA wat LEI sun

        Aguero scenario:
Aguero - SOT sto SWA ars SUN lei
Lingard - lei WHM bou NOR sto CHE (likely benched - either by me or IRL - for most or all of these)

        LIVERPOOL SCENARIO LIKELY CAPTAINS:
        GW14: Lukaku © bou / Sanchez © nor
        GW 15: Sanchez © SUN
        GW 16: Kane © NEW
        GW 17: Lukaku © LEI
        GW 18: Kane © NOR / Benteke © LEI
        GW 19: Sanchez © BOU

        AGUERO SCENARIO LIKELY CAPTAINS:
        GW14: Lukaku © bou / Sanchez © nor
        GW 15: Sanchez © SUN
        GW 16: Aguero © SWA
        GW 17: Lukaku © LEI
        GW 18: Aguero © SUN
        GW 19: Sanchez © BOU

So will my Liverpool mid + striker combo score more or less points, over those six fixtures, than Aguero over his 6 + x2 games of Aguero© in GW16 + GW18.

Benteke avgs. 5.7 pts per 90 season long and 11.8 pts per 90 under Klopp. Coutinho avgs. 12+ pts per 90 under Klopp
Very simplistic but, Benteke + Coutinho over next x6 90mins – 144 pts

Aguero avgs. 7.2 pts per 90 season long, Lingard 4.8 pts per 90
Same caveats but Aguero + Lingard over next x6 90 mins – 72 pts
Though realistically I will bench most if not all of Lingard’s 29 points – leaving me with 43 Aguero points.

I know that you’re all screaming at me now that Aguero won’t average so low as 7.2p90 forever, and that Benteke and Coutinho won’t average as high as 12pp90 forever – so let’s say Aguero improves to a whopping 10pts per 90 and Benteke + Coutinho both regress by 3pp90 a piece down to 9pp90 (if that looks high to you, I'd take another look at the fixtures).

        So we’re now at 60pts vs 108pts

Let’s say Aguero scores a hatty in GW16 + GW18, which I captain (yay me!)
So I’ll deduct x2 lots of 9ppg from his total and replace with x2 captained hatties at 34pts a pop, so 68pts total for that – and 50 net gain.

It’s getting close now and Aguero takes the lead for the first time!
        110pts vs 108pts

But I should also in that case add a reasonable captains haul for my alternative captain in GW 16 + GW18. Say Kane © NEW (a brace? 13pts) and Kane © NOR (a modest 1-goal 8-pter?)
I still own Kane in my Aguero scenario so I only get the extra captain’s points here. So 21pts.

Now we’re at 110pts to Aguero vs 129pts to Liverpool

Obviously this method of projecting points is worth about as much as so much spit in the wind, but it does highlight something that we all know already, that there’s a bunch of different ways to skin a cat, and no-one is ever ‘essential’.

And it also makes me want to go for my Liverpool double-up.

Would Lingard be your 4th mid? Otherwise as you say he's likely to just be benched the whole time.

Aubameyang is by no means a big front man : he's more of a fast player who happens to be tall. No physical presence whatsoever

I would just say get Aguero - whilst he is fit he is a must.

Just revert to your Liverpool combo when he inevitably gets injured, if that's what you fancy at the time.

Yeah but that's not the same as thinking you may get more FPL pts buy using the extra 3.5 mill elsewhere as well as having Kane instead of Agureo.

This game is about how many pts your team scores not how many pts Aguero scores...it's not the same thing.

Don't get me wrong I get where your coming from, I just couldn't bear to see Aguero get another 20+ score and him not be in my team.

Like Sanchez, he is capable of the amazing.

                    He certainly is.

I like the fact that the form if Lukaku Kane and Vardy offer a distinct alternative to Aguero. The real "balancer" will come when Those with the former insert Silva into their midfield with the money saved. Plus a quality defence.

Agree with the above. The distribution of the Aguero funds to other areas can produce more points if done wisely.

Add to that that people are messing around their teams to get him in. The history suggests his body will fail him again, and then it will be a matter of multiple changes again.

I hope that doesn't happen because I want to watch such a wonderful footballer, but it's likely.

Sadly you are right....oddly Silva is the same.

Not many people appreciate that last season Aguero was top scorer on 6.6 ppg (if memory serves me right) with Silva only about 0.4 ppg behind...(needs checking)...and second best mid in the game behind Hazard (third overall ppg)

Can you guess who is second placed mid for ppg this season ?

Silva is a much better pick than we credit him for.

Yeah Silva had a bit of a breakout season for goals last year. Coutinho may do the same this year.

From memory it was 12g 12a. An unreal contribution.

Oh now you're asking...Ozil perhaps? Seems too obvious tho!

Aguero 6.5ppg, Hazard 6.1ppg, Silva 6.0ppg were the top 3 last season.

Silva should be a good alternative to either De Bruyne or Sanchez when he's fit again - not sure whether I can afford all three.

This. But I do think Ben Trucker will be a regular soon, since he is the most similar to Lewando, who was Klopp's largest success striker at BVB. JK likes his AM players to be versatile and unpredictable and fast runners and hard working. As he gets with Lallala, Coutinho, Firmino, Sturridgo, Origo, Ibo. My guess is that Firmino and Sturridge will get one winger each, Couti in the hole, and Ben Trucker as a power forward. Lally, Ibe, Origi, sorry, you are hereby benched (or rotated).

Sorry Limpar, but you've completely forgotten that you're comparing Betenke and Coutinho with Aguero and Player X

So you should really be calculating 108 (12*9) against 60 + whatever player X scores over those 6 fixtures.

On a more positive note; Coutinho + Firmino?

My Player X is Lingard, who I mention above will be benched for 90% of the games. I should have added his one game or so's points to Aguero's score but then I have to start thinking about who would not be benched in the other scenario and it was already too complicated!

Coutinho and Firmino... certainly would've worked last week! Tempting... but as Ibe Wisdom says above I think Benteke will become a starter and I'm intrigued by a starting striker with proven PL pedigree in a firing Klopp side.

yeah, Randall should start at RB tomorrow. Clyne and Moreno are playing so much atm.

I suspect Williams will drop. If he's in the high -80's. Then he could drop

Hey all, got a bit of time on my lunch break 🙂 One minor question on my WC, would you rather have:

              A) Toby and Surman (5th mid)
              B) Dier and Gosling (5th mid)

Oh, and regarding the "is Aguero essential" discussion above...I don't even need to express my thoughts.

The thing is I would have just recommended Rose and Gosling but during the Xmas period , he will be subject to rotation with Davies. Even Dier might be rotated with Mason/Bentaleb but that is less likely . Toby is the most nailed on and is likely to play all games , so Toby would be first choice among the Spurs defenders.

Also , Toby has good goal threat and leads BPS among Spurs defenders

                  If I have to give an A or B answer , A

                  At the moment:

                  DDG/Hennessey
                  Bellerin/Moreno/Dawson/Nyom

                    Hmmm....I am tempted to say

Dawson > Evans and Toby + Gosling
                    *hides in a corner*

Another option is maybe you could go for a rotation in your GK's and drop DDG for Butland and get Rojo instead if Jones is injured long term

I have Butland at the moment, and he's been great, but their upcoming fixtures are pretty awful. I don't want rotation/injury risks coming up to Christmas, Evans/Rojo is just asking for trouble.

Fair points . Its just that Gosling is many times better than Surman . Try to get 0.1m somewhere 🙂

You could go for Ake instead of Nyom and then get Gosling.

Ake coming on in the second half against Manu confirmed for me that he is first choice

I used maybe 2 hits at the moment but now i think it's safe game is bad for this season, so I:

              Kolarov Ward Janmat
              Sanchez KDB Mahrez Deulofeu
              Kane Aguero Ayoze

Ayoze, KDB, Kolarov ---> Lukaku, Firminho, Moreno for -12? Life is one! This changes wil good for more fixture

No, I dont think so. They can both start, with Firmino playing behind Benteke but at the same time, I dont think Benteke is nailed to start, so either Firmino will play upfront or Sturridge upfront with Firmino behind. The only risk is that atm, Firmino seems unable to start twice a week, so if Klopp wants to prioritise a Europa game over an easier league game, then we may see Firmino benched in the league game. I think that he will start most games though and more than make up for games he is benched, by doing well in the games he starts

                            im guessing its

                            ----------lucas-------

                            hendo-----------Can

                            ---Firmino--Coutinho

                            --------Sturridge/Benteke

or the same line up against City that we will see

Cheers. The 2 Brazilians seem to be Klopp's favourite. You're confident he's nailed on?

I'm not a Liverpool fan, but watching them play together, in their favoured positions, I would struggle to see why Klopp wouldn't persist with them.

I'm still not sure who's first choice between Benteke and Firmino. Benteke came in for Firmino last match.

Firmino was rested for the Palace game. He had just come back from injury and looked absolutely knackered against Kazan towards the end. It seemed logical that he would start palace game on the bench but Liverpool struggled in his absence.

I'm keeping KdB. He looks likely to return points, and offers me the route w/o Aguero (Kane, Luakaku, Vardy). I'm also keeping Sanchez, and I got Coutinho (FT).

So my question is: I can do Mahrez to Ozil and getting 0.0 ITB. This is a transfer that looks really solid in terms of fixtures for both (Mahrez really tough, Ozil really nice).

Worth a -4 you think? Leaves my a rock solid forward seven (Alli is 5th mid) and can use the next GW's to strengthen my defence (Naughton, Janmaat, Kola, Simps, Dann, Bego, Hennes)

I like the move but don't think it's worth a hit, just do it next week instead
