Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Switzerland

We conclude our Group A analysis this morning with a look at Switzerland. Vladimir Petkovic’s side kick off their Euro 2016 group campaign with a clash against outsiders Albania on Saturday June 11 at 2pm before squaring up to Romania (June 15 at 5pm) and hosts France, on June 19 at 8pm.

Road to Qualification

The Swiss finished as Group E runners-up behind England, winning five and losing three of their eight fixtures. Although Petkovic’s side scored 24 times, 11 of those were in two clashes against San Marino – indeed, they failed to score in any of the three matches (twice against England, once against Slovenia) that they tasted defeat.

At the back, they managed five clean sheets, though conceded twice in each of that trio of losses, which suggests they may find it a tad more difficult at both ends of the pitch against better quality opponents.

Switzerland have played five friendlies over the last 12 months. They won 3-0 against Liechtenstein in June 2015 but have since lost three of the following four, with a 2-1 triumph over Austria in the middle of losses to Slovakia (2-3), Republic of Ireland (0-1) and Bosnia (0-2).

Most Appearances Xherdan Shaqiri, Josip Drmic (9), Johan Djourou, Gokhan Inler, Stephan Lichsteiner, Ricardo Rodriguez, Yann Sommer, Granit Xhaka, Haris Seferovic, Ahmed Mehmedi (8), Valon Behrami, Blerim Dzemaili (7), Fabian Schar (6)

Most goals Xherdan Shaqiri (4), Josip Drmic, Haris Seferovic (3), Fabian Schar (2)

Most assists Xherdan Shaqiri (5), Breel Embolo (3), Josip Drmic (2)

The Key Targets

Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri made the most convincing case for consideration over the qualifiers. Likely to be stationed on the right of a 4-2-3-1 by Petkovic, the Potters’ playmaker started more matches than any Swiss player and also leads the way for goals and assists, with four and five respectively. Delving into the underlying data, Shaqiri sat first and second in the Swiss squad for key passes and efforts on goal respectively, though is priced at a steep 8.0 in the Uefa game and, somewhat frustratingly, classified as a forward. Shaqiri’s crosses from out wide will heighten his Draft Kings appeal, whilst he also has a share of corner kick and dead-ball duties. Indeed, the Swiss scored more goals (seven) from corners than any side during qualifying.

Granit Xhaka (7.0 in Uefa) is expected to line up in the attacking midfield three positions alongside Shaqiri. The new Arsenal signing offers a threat from long-range but failed to find the net over qualifying – Xhaka may be better suited to Draft Kings, where his tackles and interceptions will pick up the points.

At the back, that 50% clean sheet record in the qualifiers isn’t overly convincing, though Ricardo Rodriguez could more than atone for that lack of resilience. Granted, he’s the priciest defender in the Swiss squad at 6.0 but the left-back boasts a significant goal threat and provides a steady source of crosses from out wide. The Wolfsburg man – who bagged two goals and three assists in the Bundesliga in 2015/16 – also shares dead-ball duties with Shaqiri.

Up top, Haris Seferovic started seven matches over the qualifiers and is favourite to lead the line with Josip Drmic ruled out after undergoing knee surgery. Although he’s failed to impress domestically and scored just three times in last year’s Bundesliga, Seferovic – priced at 6.5 in the Uefa game – produced more attempts than any team-mate in qualifying and found the net on three occasions.

The Long Shots

Johan Djourou may appeal to those on the lookout for a budget defender (5.0) in the Uefa game. The former Arsenal man started eight matches at centre-half and should pick up Draft Kings points for successful tackles and interceptions, though mustered a mere two attempts over the qualifiers.

Elsewhere in defence, Juventus’ Stephan Lichstiener (5.5) offers a similar security of starts as fellow full-back Rodriguez but offers little attacking potential down the right. Fabian Schar isn’t quite so nailed-on at centre-half but, at 5.5, has an excellent scoring record at international level – the Hoffenheim man has netted five times in 19 appearances for the Swiss senior side, including two strikes during the qualifiers.

Admir Mehmedi (6.0, classified as a forward in Uefa) is likely to take up the left flank role in a 4-2-3-1 but could be benched if Petkovic opts for Valon Behrami (6.0 in Uefa) on the flank in a 4-4-2. The latter offers minimal goal threat, though his defensive stats could be handy in Draft Kings – he’s top for successful tackles and joint-second when it comes to interceptions.

Upcoming Friendlies

Switzerland vs Belgium (May 28), Switzerland vs Moldova (June 3)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Pep's Man City Revolution

In all the excitement about Mourinho’s appointment at Manchester United I thought it was time to remember that there’s another revolution going on across the city.

According to press reports Guardiola is set for a mass clear out, with most of the current team either moved on or consigned to squad player status.

    http://www.espnfc.co.uk/blog/transfer-talk/79/post/2880984/pep-guardiola-tells-man-city-he-needs-eight-new-starters-ahead-of-2016-17

With Aguero, KDB and the poor Fantasy choice Fernandinho the only likely starters according to these reports this presents a set of new challenges for Fantasy managers.

Firstly, Aguero and De Bruyne are likely to be among the game’s most expensive players. Owning both from the off is going to be tough. Which would you go for if , as expected Aguero is once again in the £12-13m category and De Bruyne over £10m?

Secondly, what of the new recruits? Of the rumoured new additions - Ilkay Gundogan, Aymeric Laporte, Leroy Sane, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, John Stones, Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Danny Rose – who of this bunch appeals?

Thirdly, with so many changes is 2016/17 set to be a transition season for the new look Man City and one for Fantasy managers to avoid or treat with caution?

Aguero will always be a standout option, just by virtue of the fact that he is the best player in the entire league. Kevin de Bruyne is not far behind.

But I think City's league chances will depend on what kind of a season Silva has - he is an absolutely a class apart, but I think he will have atleast one more standout season.

      ---------------------Fernandinho-----------------Gundogan
      ---Silva-------------------------------de Bruyne-----------------------------Sane
      -------------------------------------------Aguero

According to speculation he's not safe from the axe. Could be time to cash in and move on if Guardiola doesn't rate him, sad as that is.

De Bruyne earned me plenty of valuable points - he was a real asset when I owned him and many baulked at the price.

If he assists most of Aguero's annual 20 plus goals and scores around 5-10 himself, then surely he is. that's actually quite a realistic prospect.

De Bruyne was unlucky with injuries and he rarely got to share the pitch with Silva and Aguero . I do not think we saw the best of City as a result.

and despite this Aguero still topped out forwards for ppg and KdB was 5th for mids. 🙂

My only problem is that inevitably we'll only be able to afford three out of the four guys on here (filtered by All Matches): http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/13752/

In which case I'm likely to give the most expensive one the chop which is likely to be KdB.

What players if any are likely to follow Pep?

Does he have players at Barca/Bayern who are loyal to him or at least have a strong working relationship with him?

It's going to be a tricky time for City this season and I'd say they're not even guaranteed top 4. Saying that, Aguero will probably be the first name on my team sheet depending on the fixtures of course.

      - The one thing that really grinds my gears about FFS players. Aguero and de Bruyne should be treated as independent players, just because you have Aguero this does not mean you should not get de Bruyne and vice versa.

      - It's far too early to say and with new recruit I want to see them settle in before investing. This is a mistake which many have made all too frequently when selecting an initial squad. Go relatively safe, keep that wildcard in the bank, stay in the middle of the pack and gradually increase the team value, then reap the rewards later in the season.

      - Again, this is a wait and see thing. Tried and trusted early, see how things develop. The City defence is somewhere I will especially be avoiding early given the high turnover, attack, not so much.

Agree - I give absolutely zero credence to 'coverage' as a concept. It's nonsense.

'Coverage' is sort of relevant from a defensive standpoint where the whole is (generally) worth greater than the individual in some cases, but outside factors(goals, assists, baps etc) make that less irrelevant.

Well yes, defensive coverage is a real thing but nobody ever talks about it that way, it's always "I've got Alli and Eriksen who can cover your Kane points", etc.

It's really not. Actually what it is, is a higher-risk strategy.

If you have 7 attackers from 7 different teams then you have the possibility of having the highest points-scorer from each of those teams in any one week or over a period of weeks. But you also have the possibility of having the players that are getting 2 points while their teammates are scoring and assisting. Higher risk, higher possible reward, bigger chance to fail.

If you double up with, say 2 Arsenal and 2 City attackers then your points ceiling is likely to be lower (unless those two teams score a ton of goals while other teams don't). But you improve your chances of getting points out of whatever goals those two teams do score. Your range of likely points outcomes will be somewhat narrower but also somewhat safer.

This UEFA game is a good case in point. It is very short, the equivalent of a FPL season with only 7 gameweeks. If you want to win it you will have to play with risk because over such a short period steady and safe play won't cut it.

            • 12 Years

So if I think de Bruyne will score more points than Sanchez but I have Aguero and no ARS attackers, I should get Sanchez right? That makes no sense to me, regardless of risk just pick the player that you think will score the most points, you're overthinking it.

              • 8 Years
              7 years, 10 months ago

Parm... It does make sense if you want to catch up or if the game is played only over a few weeks. Imagine City and Arsenal winning their games 1-0. In case if you had both Kun and KDB, your potential was lower - as one of Kun/KDB would blank in that case (assuming there were no assists). In this scenario, you have a bigger chance that one of them gets points, but also the other is assured to blank.

If you got Sanchez, even though you wanted KDB, your scoring potential is much higher but you also take a higher risk. In the 1-0 scenario, you'd hope that the goals are scored by Sanchez and Kun. Basically, you have a chance to get around 20pts from Alexis and Aguero. If you got KDB, your maximum number of points is KDB 11+Kun 2 = 13pts.

But obviously, in order to make this risky strategy pay off, a number of things have to work perfectly for you.

And just to put it into the Euro fantasy perspective.... The normal strategy: you get Reus, Oezil and Mueller, so you'll be sure that you get points from at least one of them every week.
In the more risky strategy, you lose Reus and Oezil, and get Hazard and say... Nani. Germany, Portugal and Belgium all win 1-0 and Mueller, Nani and Hazard score - it's unlikely, but when it happens, the fantasy player gains a huge advantage.

I completely get the concept, I just disagree with it. Some fantasy players play this way and that's fine by me, but I think coverage is an overrated aspect and i'll select my players regardless of team.

Agreed. Except possibly for defenders. Simpson gave Leicester "coverage" where the gold standard was Fuchs. If the Foxes kept a clean sheet (and they often did 🙂 ) then at least Simpson got the clean sheet 4 points if not the juicy bonus of Fuchs.

Coverage for midfielders and attackers is almost meaningless.

No, I'm not advocating either option. Just observing that they do different things and have different effects. Whether those effects are desirable is down to an individual manager to decide.

              Personally I sometimes double-up and sometimes I don't. I don't have a dogma about it.

I get the feeling that Aguero is going to be too expensive for me this season.

Basically reckon it will be a choice between getting 2 top strikers and a pack top midfield, or Aguero and nothing else.

      Aguero is a must.

Everything else depends on whether Pep can solve City's fundamental - mental - problem: when its not easy for them, it's almost impossible. Either they're destroying teams with swashbuckling waves of attack, with goals pouring from all areas, or they're blunt, staid, stodgy and seemingly unable to penetrate even the flimsiest back line. There is no middle ground, and once a game starts difficultly, there's no turning it round. Solve that, and we're laughing.

Well there is a lot of factors to why it has happened. My opinion is that generally it came down to the boycotting from players like Costa, Haz, Ivanovic, Fabregas. My personal opinion tho and with all those fitness issues people talk about i really think it was the personal component that got in the way.

Can someone explain to me the love affair with Perisic going on this site?

Mediocre player for Wolfsburg, shipped off to Inter where he couldn't perform well either, not a lot of goals in qualifying either. Aren't Kovacic and Rakitic better options (even though I don't want a CRO player in my team).

If you really believe that next year given our recruitment in Jan and subsequent form under allardyce second half of season, then you really haven't been watching that much football this year.

Regardless of how many games they win, newcastle still have a full season of playing likes of Rotherham and Burton, with a Manager on about £5m a year. Yes I think they'll get promoted, but I don't think it's as much of a given as everyone makes out and they've had a disastrous season, no matter how people try and dress it up.

Survived relegation on last day of season last year. Spent £80m. Got worse and were relegated. Couldn't make it up.

Oh well, you're talking like that is the first time Sunderland did that in years. When your season was saved single-handedly by a 33-year old striker towards the end of his career, says much about the recruitment and future of the club.

Di canio and advocaat had the same/less games and survived. When benetiez was appointed newcastle were a point away from safety with a game in hand. He then couldn't win against any of Norwich, Sunderland & Villa. He failed.

I'm not. I'm still in the gloating stage as a rival fan. They would and have, done exactly same to us. Once next season starts I honestly won't give a monkies about them.

I just find it hilarious that I've actually seen some of their fans post stuff like 'I'd rather be in the championship with Rafa, than premiership with Big Sam' That is the level of their fans.

I generally think Rafa is a bad manager. He stayed in 2004 and hasnt evolved since. He has won trophies granted, but i still think he is a very bad manager.

Yeah I've got to admit it's a coup for them getting him given the clubs he's managed at, however I certainly don't think he's the messiah they hope he is.

Teams are going to treat newcastle like a cup final next year and it's a very tough league to get out of. Be interesting to see fans' comments if they're floating around mid table after 10 games.

This is a load of rubbish. They spent £80m under a woefully inadequate manager who has only really performed twice in his managerial career.

They spent £0m under a world class manager who was dealt a tough hand with the fixtures, meanwhile Sunderland and Norwich played a under-performing Everton and a struggling Watford. I agree with Saniul, in a few years, I expect them to be well above Sunderland. So yes, I would rather be in the Championship for a season or two with Rafa and a decent plan/cash, than Big Sam, who while very capable at keeping teams up, often struggles to push on beyond that.

Tough hand of fixtures?! You're joking right. Five of their last ten games were against norwich, Sunderland, Swansea, palace and villa. That's min 50% of wins they could/should have won.

He had an impact yes, but as pointed out above apparent worse managers succeeded in same time where he failed.

As for the 'in a few years above Sunderland/in Europe' part you are purely speculating and given both clubs current positions, talking absolute nonsense. I mean saying you'd rather be in the championship than the prem (with a proven manager I might add) is pure jibberish.

I'm completely bamboozled by some neutral fans and the media's love in with newcastle. Big club my a*se. Can't wait to see them fall flat on their faces...... as they do time and time again.

Swansea were massively on the up and beat better teams towards the end of the season - West Ham being an obvious example. They beat Palace. Newcastle dominated the game vs Villa but couldn't put it in the net because they didn't spend the money on a proven goalscorer - a recruitment failure prior to Rafa arriving. Defoe can't keep scoring forever.

And my team's been down to League One, threatened with liquidation and seen some absolutely rubbish management, both financially and tactically. A season blip wouldn't bother me if it meant there was a chance of regeneration.

    Euro team ATM. Thoughts?

    Patricio (4.0m)

Dragovic, Ellseu, Alba (Mangala and 4.0m)

    Alaba, KDB, Matuidi, Perisic (Sanchez)

    Kane, Muller, Grizemann

      • 8 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

Oh, Mangala on the bench. Makes sense, as they play the first game of the tournament and you'd be able to play him and sub him in case of no clean sheet, right?
Dragović/Eliseu to the bench, play Mangala.

And what are two defensive midfielders doing in your team? Alaba I understand, as he's on set pieces and scored and assisted a few in the qualifiers, but... Matuidi...? The lad may score from time to time, but his role is to defend and only occasionally move forward, he is rather a Draft King option, but not on fantasy.

Also, I'm not a fan of Alexis, I'm afraid Chile didn't qualify. Would rather have Çalhanoğlu than Perisić.

The matuidi pick was just me messing around but thinking the way France play he is a great box to box mid so think he'll get himself in the box alot and could be amongst the goals/assists but I may opt for someone else. I like Perisic and his record in qualifying was good plus think Croatia will get out that group ahead of Turkey. Alaba is Austrias main man (Set pieces and pens) plus again I think Austria can go far in the tournament, real dark horses. Its Renato Sanchez.

For people looking for £4.5m players who might play, have a look at Alexandru Chipciu - started in the hole in 7 of the games in qualifying, scored a goal, also has a very decent record at Bucharest (30 odd goals in 120 matches).

Our defensive form is usually based on Krychowiak's performances. Without Sevilla's CDM we struggle to get clean sheets. In fact, we struggle to get cleanies at all!

The only route to Polish defence is Piszczek in my opinion - has loads of attacking potential and his game (attacking wise) has really improved since November/December under Tuchel in Borussia.

Note that Krychowiak has a slight knee problem and is a doubt for the first game against Northern Ireland. He only just arrived to our camp. And as I said, he is absolutely crucial for our CS potential. Need to observe Krycha's situation.

Milik - 4m cheaper and allows you to get the likes of Ronaldo, Mueller etc. without too much sacrifice in defence and midfield. He also wants to earn himself a move from Ajax to a bigger club, Sevilla seem to be interested in him. He scored bags of goals this season and don't think he will stop in France!

Interesting. Pompeyfan, an Ajax season ticket holder, really doesn't rate him. Says he only seems to turn up against weaker teams.

I've had a discussion about Milik with Pompeyfan half a year ago on here, in the context of Milik's possible move to Spurs.

And this talk of Milik scoring against weaker opposition only is nonsense! He is the first forward in the Dutch league to score in 6 consecutive games since Suarez. People were accusing Milik of scoring only against weak teams, when he was on an impressive run of 6 goals in 4 games.

So they played PSV the next week (who were eventually crowned champions) and if those accustions were true, he would have blanked. Guess what? He scored and assisted in one of the most important games of the season.

Not to mention his goal against Germany, which helped us get the first victory against the Germans in the history!

There is clearly a Milik-phobia going on in the Netherlands. Even de Boer, their manager, made some weird decisions, and one of them cost them the title - he decided to take off Milik, his best striker) in the last game of the season, in the 66th minute, when they were drawing and needed a win. Of course, they weren't able to score.

I'd love to see Pompeyfan around and have this discussion again, after a good few months. Maybe his opinion has changed.

He is extremely inconsistent and sometimes - extremely frustrating.

He flourished in France this season, especially in the second part. He had an amazing goals/minutes played ratio. Nailed on.

The deal with Grosicki is that Stade Rennais manager often used him as a super-sub, allowing him to destroy opposition defence with his pace in the late stages. He's done well for us in the qualifiers, too, but as many stress, he tends to disappear against tougher opposition.

I am hoping that someone might be able to give me some advice please.

At the start of the season, I entered a number of leagues which were free to enter but which had a prize (cash or free bet) for winning the league. My final overall rank was 1,702 and so luckily, I managed to finish top of quite a few of the leagues.

The organisers of one of the leagues is refusing to give me the free bet prize as they are claiming that I was not registered in the league at the start of the season. This is simply not correct, however I cannot find any way of proving when I joined the league.

Does anybody know if there is a way of finding and proving the date that you joined a particular league please?

    Thanks in advance.

Both have clean sheet potential but I'd bit worried they might both get the clean sheet in the same week as they both play the weakest team first. Depends on the depth of the rest of your defence though

Rodriguez if you don't have a Swiss attacker, otherwise Sommer or Djourou cause they're cheap. Don't like Polish defs though, there are better options for 5m imo, but Piszczek maybe for attacking potential

Eliseu, attacking fullback from Portugal, Dier (if you dont have him), Mangala or Mathieu (friendlies will clear that up), Austrian defs

      • 8 Years

Having Piszczek and Lichtsteiner, as above, is not a bad idea at all. Glik would have been essential a year ago - he had a great 14/15 season, scoring 10 goals in 49 apps. But now he's played 35 games, scoring 0. So Piszczek is probably the way to go.

Rodriguez and Glik for me by a fair stretch. I picked up Rodriguez as my first defender in a draft league with ENR and co, the guy's got some serious attacking threat and so has Glik.

I was going through all the teams in the Euros, so I found a lot of teams whose players I did not know well. So I did a bit of research (thanks Transfermarkt, WhoScored and UEFA site), and now I have a list of all the potential XIs of the sides (with the prices of each player). I thought it could be of help to you.

Maybe Martial and Griezmann is a little heavy? Otherwise I like it, but then it's very similar to my team so I would.

I'm unsure on Hector because I don't see many clean sheets in the group stage and if you are going with 2 keepers then you could probably save money on De Gea and gamble on someone else.

Does anyone else have a strategy for the Euro game?

I'm thinking I might work my squad so all my defenders play before the last game day (and ideally forwards too). That way I will have 2-3 midfielders (and maybe a keeper) to come in on the final game day for whichever players haven't performed, doesn't matter what position. Then I want to make sure I have a viable captain choice for the first 3 game days.

How does that sound? Or am I overcomplicating things?

I'm just trying to make sure all captaincy candidates are in different groups. 🙂

    Pick 2, please 🙂

Dragovic, Mangala, Dier, Glik, Djourou, Eliseu or any other convincing 5m options.

      I'd go Dragovic and Mangala

    Thoughts on this team?

    Lloris
    Schar Matel Gilk Eliseu
    Alli Martial Perisic
    Griezmann Shaqiri Mueller
    ---------------------------------------------------
    Westwood Alaba Denayer Rafa Silva

3m in the bank(to upgarde Shaqiri if required).

    Thanks.

Westwood won't play. Randolph is number 1, Forde is number 2.

Anyone else really struggling to pick their Euro midfield? Everyone feels like a punt..

Perisic -> good qualifiers, poor season.
    Grosicki -> inconsistent, explosive.
Alaba -> Central to the team, plays DM.
Pogba -> Central to the team, plays DM, expensive.
Ozil -> expensive, doesn't score goals for Germany.
Siggy -> 8m, plays for Iceland, but on all set pieces.
Alli -> Might not play every game, unproven.
Calhanoglu -> Are Turkey any good?
De Bruyne -> Expensive, tough group, good qualifiers.

Who in gods name are we all going for? Are any of you SURE about your mids? Or are they just educated punts?

Hazard -> Worst season in memory, expensive, poor form for Belgium in qualifiers (outshone by KdB)

Reus -> Poor form for Germany (outshone by Muller), expensive, outshone by Mhiktarian+Aubameyang at Dortmund.

Martial -> Great option if he starts, but could be competing with Coman for a spot on the wing.

Cesc -> Is he even a definite starter? Will Spain score many goals against some tough teams?

All fantastic players, but they seem like punts to me.. Definitely not much to go on with the first two for their price.

Actually Hazard's output for Belgium wasn't bad.

Martial also has Payet to contend with.

Cess isn't a definite starter but a probable one.

Siggy for 8m? He's a good option due to set pieces but will Iceland provide him with enough help? Will he even get those set pieces?

I think you've underestimated Alaba a bit. But yes, it's all very punty.

Alaba is the most nailed in my midfield.

What rubbish would that be? 🙂

Perisic had great qualifiers but as the faithful English fans should know, that doesn't automatically translate to the finals..

Slovakia's midfield is very interesting, fancy them to do well?
In the context of Slovakia, Weiss / Mak / Hamsik look good, but in the context of the Euros, do Slovakia look good?

Is Ozil at 8.5 expensive? Germany can beat anyone and Ozil is the best assister in Europe.

Only 4 assists in qualifying though, the same amount as Bendtner, only one more than Oxlade Chamberlain.

Not saying he's not the best assister in Europe, just saying he hasn't been on top form.

8.5m is expensive enough... Not breaking the bank but enough for me to think twice.

The Germans as a whole were struggling in the qualifiers. But when it comes to big tournaments, they *always* hugely improve comparing to the qualifying stage. Oezil and Reus are the first names on my team sheet at the moment.

I have Muller in, I can probably only get one of the two mids though. Would you prioritise Ozil over Reus? I love them both as players, no idea who's more important for the national team when they both play though.. I presume Ozil plays a bit further behind Reus (not that that makes much of a difference with Ozil)

I wouldn't prioritise any of them - that's a difficult task to decide which one to go with. That's why I have both.

Reus more attacking but Ozil more guaranteed of minutes and has set pieces.
