Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Slovakia

Group B’s underdogs are UEFA European Championship new boys Slovakia, who open their campaign against Wales at 5pm on Saturday, June 11, before facing Russia at 2pm four days later and then England at 8pm on Monday, June 20.

The side bears comparison with Russia, with age and a lack of defensive pace, alongside a heavy reliance on counter-attacking football, likely to be a hindrance.

Underestimating Slovakia would be foolish, though – in their international tournament debut, the 2010 World Cup, they knocked out defending champions Italy on their way to the last 16, whilst a 2-1 defeat of Spain in qualifying confirmed a taste for big-name scalps.

THE ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

That home victory over Spain ended an eight-year undefeated period in qualification matches for La Roja, part of a superb early run when Slovakia won their first six group matches on the spin.

Things got a little jittery after that, with a draw, two defeats and no goals in their next three fixtures, before a 4-2 win in Luxembourg secured second spot in the group, five points adrift of Spain.

Coach Jan Kozak consistently sets up his side in a 4-2-3-1 formation designed to sit deep and hit opponents on the counter, and it worked well enough for his defence to keep four clean sheets and concede eight goals in ten qualifiers.

The big question mark remains Slovakia’s ability to adapt their tactics should they fall behind and it will be a surprise if they can muster enough resilience and offensive firepower to find their way out of Group B.

Over the last 12 months, Slovakia have played five friendlies, winning against Switzerland, Iceland and Georgia, and drawing with Latvia and Republic of Ireland. Kozak’s troops have netted at least twice in four of those fixtures, though managed just a single clean sheet.

Most Appearances Matus Kozacik, Marek Hamsik (10), Tomas Hubocan, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Viktor Pecovsky (9), Martin Skrtel, Peter Pekarik, Vladimir Weiss (8), Miroslav Stoch, Adam Nemec (7)

Most Goals Marek Hamsik (5), Adam Nemec (3); Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka (2).

Most Assists Vladimir Weiss (6); Adam Nemec, Miroslav Stoch (2); Marek Hamsik, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Stanislav Sestak, Peter Pekarik (1).

THE KEY TARGETS

Slovakia’s chief attacking threat comes from playmaker Marek Hamsik. The Napoli man is now 28 and close to his peak – he fired more attempts than any team-mate in qualifying, with five qualifying goals making him the squad’s top scorer. Priced at 7.5 in the official Uefa game, Hamsik recorded six strikes and 11 assists in Serie A last season and is almost certain to be the Slovaks’ most popular pick.

Former Manchester City wide man Vladimir Weiss (6.5) also caught the eye in qualifying, with six assists the joint-best return across the competition. Stationed on the left, Weiss created more chances than any team-mate in qualifying and is afforded a fair share of corner kicks. His ability to take on and beat opponents should also draw fouls and earn points in the Draft Kings game.

Lone striker Adam Nemec (6.5) featured in seven of the team’s ten group fixtures, scoring three times and providing one assist. Having also bagged a brace against Georgia on Friday evening, he looks to have strengthened his position as first-choice lone striker under Kozak.

In central midfield, Juraj Kucka (6.0 in Uefa) offers good all-round potential in the mid-price bracket. The AC Milan man was second only to Hamsik for attempts over the qualifiers and found the net twice, whilst he also made more successful tackles than any team-mate, heightening his Draft Kings potential.

THE LONG SHOTS

With Martin Skrtel setting you back 5.5, full-backs Tomas Hubocan and Peter Pekarik (both 5.0) are the cheapest of the nailed-on options in a somewhat unconvincing defence. As the team’s most productive full-back for successful tackles and key passes, the former looks likely to offer some value in the Draft Kings game. Keeper Matus Kozacik comes in are just 4.5 in Uefa, though, and played a part in all ten matches in the qualifiers.

Right winger Robert Mak (6.0) will struggle for our attentions, though he did manage a goal and two assists on the road to France. Mak’s attacking stats – double-figures for both shots and key passes – afford a degree of optimism, whilst the former Man City youth player also shares corner duties with Weiss and is top by some distance for crosses.

Upcoming Friendlies

Germany vs Slovakia (May 29), Slovakia vs Northern Ireland (June 4)

    Any problems?

    Patricio - Sommer
    Dragovic - Juanfran - Hector - Eliseu - Vrsaljko
    Reus - Alli - Peresic - Alaba - J.Mario
    Kane - Giroud - Muller

Eliseu can become that other guy if he wins the place.
    Thoughts?

You can add penalties to Lewandowski. Milik takes set pieces a bit more frequently than Grosicki, but Grosicki takes corners.

Well, I don't know who prepared that columns and where got the info from, but I'm Polish and I saw every Poland's game and Blaszczykowski scored the last penalty only because Lewandowski let him do this. Kuba was in bad form for a long time and just got this PK as a "gift".
Milik has very good left foot and shoots FK when position is OK.

My source is my eyes and info from last week trainings in Arlamow. When it comes to the penalty Lewandowski is number 1 🙂

Milik scored a free kick against Sui. He also scored few goals for Ajax, against Roda for example. Especially now when Rybus is out, Milik should have more opportunities for left foot set pieces.

All right. I understand. Nonetheless if you have Lewy and Grosicki and you count on their penalties, free kicks and corners, you're safe!

Well ok I'll just make a team for the EC 😀

Already got Koscielny Giroud and Schar from group A

Now I'm looking at group B, Dummett an interesting option at 4.0?

Van der *Wiel is just awful defensively.
Dragović would be quite the coup as there's likely to be plenty of interest in him. Borussia Dortmund are linked as a Mats Hummels replacement.

              Where's Håvard Nordtveit?!

Lewis Baker needs to be in the first team squad next season. Has had a great season and his stats are top notch. (both Goals + Assists as well as underlying stats)

Needs another loan. Atsu was player of the season at Vitesse and others have done well there but that doesn't necessarily equate to being ready for Chelsea. Also, as Chelsea don't have European football for a change there will be less games.

That 21-23 age group is very difficult to bring through at a top club. Look at Bamford, Championship player of the season but unable to get in the first team regularly for either Palace or Norwich.

A PL loan would be great for Baker but the question would be whether he'd regularly start for any PL team, even someone like Burnley.

Atsu was different because he was scoring at an unsustainable rate. Baker on the other hand has created 3.5 chances per 90 minutes this season. That would have been the 4th highest in the PL but Eridivise is an easier league.

Maybe you are right. I want to see Oscar playing under Conte this season so maybe yes a loan is best for him.

I think he has the quality to start in 5-6 PL team but managers do not like starting loanees but they want to start their own players.

I am hoping for the best. He looks like a good player and the fact that he is English will only help him in the PL.

                  I'd rather see Oscar sold.

What most interests me is what formation Conte will use. A back-3 doesn't really suit Chelsea's squad.

This. I don't see a single player who is capable of playing as a wingback for Chelsea - other than Cuadrado, maybe.

We also don't have any CBs who can play in a back 3.

Cuadrado obviously. Baba Rahman. Willian. Kenedy. But you are right, it would be forced.

More importantly, Chelsea's defenders aren't the quickest (Zouma apart) and Azpilicueta wouldn't fit anywhere either, not tall enough to play in a back 3 and not attacking enough to be used as a wingback.

I suspect we'll see some version of 4-4-2. 2 strikers is as much a Conte trademark as 3 at the back is.

Yep. Pedro's performances a lot when starts playing in a front 2. Also , I don't know whether you agree with this but I don't see Hazard playing as a winger in a 4-4-2 well. Fabregas and Hazard are arguably the 2 best best creative forces in our team and none of them fit into a 4-4-2 system imo.

I don't know about Hazard. Conte doesn't play a traditional 4-4-2, it's more like Chelsea's 4-2-3-1 except with the #10 being replaced with a striker. So, 2 strikers, 2 attacking wingers and 2 solid centre midfielders. Hazard does enough defensively to play in that system.

Fabregas can play that CM role against all but the best opposition. It is only when Chelsea are up against a better team that he is likely to get found out defensively. The question is whether we'll see Matic back at his best - or whether he'll even still be at the club.

Azpi could be a WB. He had the odd game on the wing for Mourinho if I remember correctly. Usually when defending a lead of course

I think he will either use a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-4 formation depending on whether he wants to keep Fabregas at the club. Conte when managing at Juventus was very keen at signing Oscar and I love his pressing , so I want him to start next season as first reserve AM for us.

A back 3 is a very bad idea , I agree. We need to buy 2-3 CBs and 2 WBs if we want to play 3 at the back. Unless Chelsea allow Conte to spend 150 million like United have done in the past 2 seasons , I do not see a back 3 as a good option.

I think it would be better if the players who were around the first team scene this season, like Kenedy and Traore, given some sustained chances. Otherwise this merry-go-round of loan players doesn't help anyone.

Yeah, I was initially planning to skip FPL for a year, then I realised I probably wouldn't manage to do that. Won't be my most active year, though.

Yeah, I have my dissertation to do. Have laid groundwork for it though, part of it was published as a short paper a month back, but still a lot of work. 🙂

Yeah. You need to keep your priorities correct. A dissertation is straightforward enough if you make a good structure and stick with it. It will certainly help if you have a solid foundation to work upon.

You will have a tutor as well and they help a lot as well

            Sommer

            Hector Kosi lichsteiner Janfran Fonte
            Ozil alli KDB Perisic Payet
            Long Giroud Vardy

A: can you change captain on each game day?
B: My forwards are weak but gambling on substitutions. Is it a dangerous call?

            Good afternoon lads.
I'm a bit late of this Euro game, so I have a ton of questions to fill my team, plz give me your opinion

            1) Who are 4.0, 4.5 starter GKs?
            2) Who are 4.5, 5.0 starter defenders?
            3) Who are 4.5, 5.0 starter midfielders?
            4) Mandzkic, Giroud, Alli, Hector, Magala all should start for their teams, yes?

            Cheers.

I don't know ref cheap starters I am a little out of the loop right now. I think you are right with 4 but I doubt we could say Giroud is nailed on with the other options available to France

Since you sure just starting you may find this ticker I made useful.

I have a cherry tree, 2 Blueberry bushes, 2 Blackberry bushes. (they just aren't in the ground yet)

I wasn't going to get apples as my parents had a few and always have lots. But they have moved so maybe I will.

6 is a lot of apples to eat!

Some plums would be nice. You must have some size of garden! Mine is pretty big too I could easily have a few more trees.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Euros – is cutting corners on value worth it?

With the likes of Muller proving popular picks (see Lyonnais look at the FFS community template http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/05/29/euro-2016-team-analysis-slovakia/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_13394437) there is a real need to look for a few value players to free up funds.

But would it be better to spread the value across the team rather than cutting corner?

What do you think of shunning some ‘on paper’ better, but more expensive, options for their cheaper versions?

Hamsik with his five goals in qualifying is a case in point. Can his much cheaper teammate Mak with just two goals compete? Or is the money saved and invested elsewhere worth cutting corners with Slovakia?

A lot of good midfielders have been classified as forwards. Bale, Arnie, Milik, Arnie, Shaqiri.
But I think switching between five 7-7.5m mids we can expect one of them to match the premium midfielder.

Wouldn't call Milik a midfielder. He is a forward for Ajax and plays just behind Lewandowski in the national team.

Mak over Hamsik is one I'm strongly considering..
              Djourou over R.Rodriguez..
              Juanfran over Alba..
              Milik over Lewandowski..
              Ozil over Reus..
              Shane Long over C.Ronaldo.. 😉

I have managed get all my first choices, bar one, into my team with the help of a 4.0 defender and a 4.5 goal keeper, plus Janko, who is kind of my selection anyway ... so not too much compromise at this stage.

I actually prefer Mak to Weiss - especially if it means that I can field Grosicky. 🙂

I think Weiss is better value than either Hamsik or Mak. But I'd take Hamsik if cash wasn't an issue.

Personally I think people are spending unnecessarily much on defenders. 😕

This is perhaps my biggest issue at the moment, where to cut corners to allow for upgrades. Current team and decisions to be made:

              Patricio, Sommer (keeping both)
Alba (>Juanfran?), Rodriguez (>Djourou?), Hector (upgrade or swap for Darmian?), Denayer, Matel (upgrade both?)
Perisic, Matuidi, Alaba (keeping), Alli, R.Silva (upgrade both?)
Lewy, Muller, Giroud (really want to keep all three)

Downgrading Alba and Rodriguez gives me an extra 2.5m to play with, which could upgrade the two defenders and two midfielders I feel are the weak links (Denayer, Matel, Alli, R.Silva). Hector I'm 50/50 on at the moment with Germany's poor recent defensive record.

Why? What could be the downside of this approach?

This could pull players who have already played into your starting xi? Would this be allowed?

It could pull OUT players that you wish to play. Permanently.

Last time round, if you clicked the FORMATION button, it automatically removed the furthermost right of the shrinking row. No matter what you intended.

That would not be good at all. So if you were to do that you could move the player left first and then change the formation to avoid it potentially happening? Thanks for the heads up

Who would you take, Mak or Weiss? Are both sure starters?
