Euro 2016

Scout Notes – Euro 2016 Friendlies

Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet both find the net as France leave it late to get the better of Cameroon. Elsewhere, an under strength Sweden stutter to a goalless draw against Slovenia in their penultimate friendly before Euro 2016 gets underway a week on Friday.

France 3 Cameroon 2

The hosts took their record to eight wins in nine friendlies with a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Cameroon in Nantes last night.

Blaise Matuidi opened the scoring with his fourth goal in the last nine for Didier Deschamps’ side and is shaping up to be an overlooked differential. Despite bagging a couple of assists during that run, the 7.0-priced midfielder sits in just 5% of sides in the Uefa game.

Paul Pogba showed just why he’s the most popular player in Uefa (42% ownership) with a stunning assist, whilst Kingsley Coman and Dimitri Payet threw their hats into the ring for starting roles on the wings by bagging an assist and goal respectively. Although Payet’s late free-kick winner hogged the headlines, the West Ham playmaker turned in another creative masterclass and also provided eight key passes, suggesting that he could yet oust Anthony Martial in Deschamps’ starting XI.

Olivier Giroud strengthened his claim for the lone striker role by bagging his sixth goal in the last nine friendlies. Owned by just 5%, the Arsenal frontman – costing 8.5 in Uefa – fired his side’s second on 41 minutes before being replaced by rival Andre-Pierre Gignac on 65 minutes.

At the back, Adil Rami was handed the chance to impress alongside Laurent Koscielny as Deschamps mulls over his options in light of Raphael Varane’s injury absence. Yet to be added to the Uefa game, Rami looks set to battle it out with Eliaquim Mangala (5.0) for a place in the first XI, though France’s recent defensive record is hardly encouraging – they have now conceded twice in each of their last four fixtures.

France XI: Lloris; Sagna, Rami, Koscielny, Evra; Diarra (Kante 46), Matuidi, Pogba (Sissoko 65); Coman (Cabaye 76), Giroud (Gignac 65), Payet.

Sweden 0 Slovenia 0

Sweden were without a number of players including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kim Kallstrom, Marcus Berg and Martin Olsson for last night’s goalless draw against Slovenia.

Both sides managed a mere two shots on target apiece, with John Guidetti looking the man most likely for Erik Hamren’s side – partnered by Isaac Thelin up front, he produced three efforts and a couple of key passes over the 90 minutes.

The result means that Sweden have now conceded just twice in their last four fixtures. Fantasy managers looking for a cut-price defender should keep an eye on Viktor Nilsson Lindelof, who seems to have stepped up his case for consideration after previously failing to play any part in the qualifiers. Priced at just 4.0 in the Uefa game, he has now started each of the last three friendlies and could be worth a gamble as a budget enabler if he gets the nod in the final pre-Euros friendly against Wales on Monday.

Sweden XI: Isaksson; Lustig (Jansson 46), Nilsson Lindelof, Granqvist, Durmaz; Larsson, Hiljemark, Wernbloom (Rohden 71), Forsberg (Zengin 46); Guidetti, Thelin.

I wouldn't read too much into these friendlies. Come game time, the old order will exert itself.

I think people are falling into a Trap due to our last manager's tournament showings.

We're well able to keep out any of those three teams, the only problem is that we might not be able to score against two of them.

        Final standings:

        Belgium 1 win, 2 draws
        Italy 3 draws
        Ireland 3 draws
        Sweden 2 draws, 1 loss

Are three points enough to get best 3rd place finish with a GD of +0? 😉

    1. Best FRA pick (Giroud, Griezmann, Martial & Pogba all gone)?

    2. Best BLG pick (KDB + Haz gone)?

    3. Best ENG pick (Kane gone)

On the right I would say Vieirinha is very likely to start, but he is a terrible pick as he is a midfielder in the UEFA fantasy. In the middle Pepe is super nailed, then Carvalho should join him, but they are both over 5M. So your only chance is the left. It will be either Eliseu or Guerreiro. Eliseu is more likely at this point, but Guerreiro played a good friendly against Norway and scored a superb free kick goal, so things are not so clear now.

Long story short, wait until the friendly with England to make a decision...

I'm portuguese and I follow the national team quite a lot. At the moment, the entire formation apart from Patricio, Ronaldo and Nani is pretty much unknown. Pepe is your best bet for defence. After him, it's a throw-up between Cedric and Eliseu. I still believe Eliseu is more likely, but with Guerreiro having scored an amazing free kick against Norway...

      My opinion on their chances:
      Cedric/Vieirinha (50/50), Pepe (99), Fonte/Carvalho/Alves (35,45,20), Eliseu/Guerreiro(70/20).

As said above... Long story short, Patricio.

In a game where you can shift your captain, the more expensive players are less appealing for me.

I mean If you captain Griezman in the first game, only a brace or more would stop you swapping to Ronaldo right?

I would downgrade one of Ronnie / Griez (giroud maybe) and buff the defence a little

Estimate of $100,000 to $200,000 for a World Cup winners medal seems a little conservative to me, footballers who can only dream of winning one earn that in a week! Sadly, I won't be bidding myself 🙁

it's very sad. The likes of Greaves have done it too. The problem is some of these players really didn't earn a lot (relatively to now) and it's the easiest way of leaving a decent chunk to their families.

Of course these things can go either way but in the case of *set piece guy* vs *guy who can score from open play* i would personally prefer the guy who i consider safer and has more avenues to get points ie the set piece guy.

With potentially only a handful of games (if qualified people will be rested for last group game remember too) i just think you are edging your bets by going down this route.

I know Payet's brilliant from set-pieces, but we can't just count on France winning lots of Free-Kicks and Corners for him to get points. I don't think he's scored a goal from open play for us since Everton away in early March, which makes me think he's far to reliant on set-plays. I'd be interested to know the stats on how many of his goals/assists come from set-pieces. I love the guy, but I don't think I'll be bringing him in.

I understand your point but does it matter how the goals come as long as they do?

I would say if he was on the pitch he would have at least 3 possible free kicks during a match which i dont think you could guarantee 3 good chances from open play for most players.

I wont be picking him but just an observation

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Euro defenders

With the possibility of Sweden's Viktor Nilsson Lindelof being nailed on for 4m does this alter the names in your back line?

Who are your current defenders? Are they cheap as chips, premium picks or a nice mixture of both?

5 premium defenders for me Jonty. IMO , there are some bargains in midfield who are nailed but the same cannot be said about the cheap defenders. Also , I feel there are some CS bankers in the group stage fixtures for Spain , Switzerland and France. Their defenders are not cheap. Also Giaccherini from Italy is playing OOP. So , these are my defenders -

      Alba (7.0) / Juanfran (5.5) / Schär (5.5) / Mangala/Rami (5.0) / Giaccherini (5.0)

Mostly cheapies, and some coverage of big teams. I strongly believe they are not the way to go, since usually in Euros there are very few clean sheets in the group stage.

      2012: 9 clean sheets in in 48 possible (24 matches x 2 teams). Only Spain got 2.
2008: 14 clean sheets in 48 possible. Russia, Netherlands, Germany and Croatia got 2 (which also proves not necessarily the bigger teams get the clean sheets).

      Pique - Koscielny - Dier - Vrsaljko - Giaccherini

Pique/Alba and a 6.0 French defender should be reliable. Giaccherini is a risk I'm willing to take, 5.0 and is likely play in central midfield or on the left. He looked lively against Scotland and UEFA were silly to classify him as a defender.

Haha fair enough! You could also downgrade one of the two 8.5 strikers to Milik / Janko / Harnik but I understand if you don't want to do that 🙂

wrt 6.5 mids, I have Weiss and Junuzovic, but seeing as you have Mak... Maybe Dzsudzsak? He has a monopoly on set pieces and absolutely nailed to start.. Shame he plays for Hungary though. Alli is another option.

I just feel that R.Silva is too risky to have as your sub off the bench, you could take out a playing player for a blanker.

Rafa is well rated, but I'm not sure he will play. Considering this match against Norway was to test the "second line" and he was only a sub... I don't think there is a single nailed mid for Portugal at the moment.

I don't think Moutinho is nailed considering his form and his injuries. Mario should be nailed, but he may decide to go with Quaresma on the wing after the display against Norway. I'm not putting my money on any of them 100%.

    Thoughts on this?

    Patricio/Sommer
    Dier/Djorou/Juanfran/Kadlec/Dragovic
    Alaba/Dszudszak/Mak/Perisic/Grosicki
    Giroud/Muller/Ronaldo

Ronaldo is "non-negotiable" since I'll be playing in fantasy leagues with Portuguese people so I don't wanna risk not having Ronaldo and getting behind everyone lol. I would like to improve the defence, maybe by getting a 4.5 in mid, but none convinces me.

Yea, I thought about that, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do it. I think a brace or an hat-trick is likely considering the group. Is form however seems terrible... Don't really know. How would you spend the 4.0?

          Something like:

My only problem now is I'm afraid of Payet and Fabregas not being nailed... Payet can be solved easily, but is Cesc guaranteed starter?

Probably not. He's a fantastic player, but for fantasy football, not necessarily so. He's very central for France though, but on midfield and not in set pieces. he might even pull that magic in every match, but Giroud is not going to convert it every time. 😉

Not convinced he actually even had any attitude problems. That was all United fanzine sheet after the negotiations failed. All he asked was to be given a chance in the first team, and seen how rubbish that midfield was and how good he was, can you blame him?

Alba is more nailed and has much more attacking threat, same for Matuidi, who has 4 goals in 9 for France who play Albania and a Romania side that lost 4-3 to Ukraine yesterday with a full strength team.

May not be bad idea if it's three French in attack. If you watched last night, they could (and should!) have scored 5 or 6. There are goals in that team.

Then again, they also only conceded like 3 or 4 real chances, and that last goal of Cameroon was preceded by a clear foul on Koscielny, so it was not THAT shambolic in defence either. Cameroon is kind of sheet, but I'm not convinced Romania is any better, worse if anything.

Are they? Seems like they're in very good spirit. Only thing fragile about them is that defence, but Deschamps just said he's set his team to score more goals than his opponent even if that means to sacrifice his defence. I think that may just work fine against Romania. Against Germany it means kamikazeing themselves out of the competition.
