Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Matchday 3 – Day 2

It was a home nation clean sweep at the summit of Group B.

Wales grabbed top spot with a 3-0 demolition of Russia while England had to settle for second after toiling against a Slovakia side who came for a point and gained it through a mixture of backs to the wall defending and wastefulness on the part of their opponents.

England 0 Slovakia 0

Slovakia parked the bus, England had a tournament-high 30 attempts and the result was a goalless draw.

For a team that came into the Euros with attacking flair and a questionable defence, Roy Hodgson’s men have rarely been troubled at the back but have struggled to break down a trio of stubborn Group B opponents.

Hodgson, as was widely forecast, made six changes to the side that started against Wales and two of them, Jamie Vardy (7.0) and Daniel Sturridge (7.5) missed the best chances, while a third, Nathaniel Clyne (6.0) was almost unplayable in the first half.

The Liverpool full-back created no fewer than seven chances, supplied six crosses and had two attempts on goal. He also reduced dangerous winger Vladimir Weiss (6.5) to an almost exclusively defensive role, yet such is the strength in the England squad, Kyle Walker (5.0) will almost certainly be back for the Round of 16.

What they lack is a killer instinct – an astonishing 10 players had at least two attempts, while no Slovakian had more than one. Even Dele Alli (6.5), given a 35-minute cameo, had four efforts, as did centre-half Gary Cahill (5.5).

Eric Dier (5.0) remains the team’s most attractive option in the official Uefa game courtesy of his classification as a defender. He led the team with five attempts, created two chances and won two tackles and made an interception for decent DraftKings returns as well.

Hodgson is highly likely to return to most of the players who started the Wales match when the knock-out stage starts, though the big question mark hangs over Sturridge. Vardy stretches defences and offers the side a different dimension with his pace, whereas the Liverpool man struggles to impose himself when stationed wide in Hodgson’s preferred 4-3-3.

As for Slovakia, Martin Skrtel (5.5) was immense, with 12 clearances, blocks and interceptions. After bagging a goal and assist apiece last time out, Marek Hamsik and Vladimir Weiss were restricted to a single effort each against the Three Lions – the duo will clearly need to up their output if, as expected, Jan Kozak’s side progress as one of the best third-placed qualifiers.

Wales 3 Russia 0

Wales won Group B in some style, despatching a Russia side with an eye-catching attacking display.

Igor Akinfeev (5.0) made a tournament-high nine saves but over-committed when Aaron Ramsey (7.5) was put through, allowing the Arsenal midfielder to dink the ball over him to open the scoring early on.

Wales never looked back after that, with the 5.0-priced Neil Taylor – bagging his first ever international goal – an unlikely scorer to make it 2-0 and, almost inevitably, Gareth Bale (10.5) adding a third from a Ramsey pass in the second half.

Taylor and his fellow full-back Chris Gunter (5.0) were as industrious as ever, with the former creating two chances and the latter putting in three crosses, but Russian pressure pinned them back more than they would have liked.

Indeed, the shot count – 19-12 in Wales’ favour – suggested a closer encounter than actually transpired. Of those 12 attempts by Russia, only two were on target, compared to 12 from the Welsh.

Bale terrorised Russia’s ageing back line throughout. He had eight attempts, six of which were on target, completed eight of ten dribbles, and created three chances in a superb all-round display that scored particularly highly in DraftKings.

Nonetheless, Ramsey eclipsed his illustrious team-mate, creating six chances, putting in six crosses and firing four attempts to go with his goal and assist.

Joe Allen (6.0) also provided an assist and added a cross, four fouls drawn and four interceptions, but it is Wales’ big two – and that currently includes the tournament’s top scorer in Bale – who offer most of the potential points returns in both the Uefa game and DraftKings.

With a third-placed finisher to come in the Round of 16, Ramsey and Bale look like sound investments in a team that appears to be growing into the tournament.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Matchday 3 changes

Who is in, who is out for you?

Any captaincy success so far? Or are you twisting today? If so who is your new captain?

What are Bale captainers doing? Happy with six points? Or moving on to another?

And can Muller justify being top of the captain poll? Or are there better options?

congratulations. Sturridge let me down - could have had a haul though. Oh, well - onwards to Kroos today.

Could he? Apart from the one ball floated over the top that he couldn't quite reach I don't remember him having a sniff. I also captained him 🙁

If I hadn't spent my transfer on him I'd have captained Kozacik last night, grrr...

He was very close lots of times. Also to getting assists. Worrying that he is being deployed out wide though. Central is by far his best position.

Thought Vardy, Sturridge, Clyne especially and Bertrand were all excellent last night.

Henderson was ok, but Wilshire was terrible. So many attacks broke down because of him. They are no substitutes for Rooney and Alli. If Wayne and Dele had started I have no doubt that England would have won. The chances to Sturridge and Vardy would have been better.

In Peresic out Payet's miserable 1 point.

Third different captain of the week. Tonight I am going for Muller but I stll have Ronaldo up my sleeve as well.

I didn't captain Bale but if I had I think it is better to twist.

I don't think anyone who has done naff all can justify being top of the captain poll. Hopefully he will do well though

Muller is the obvious choice, given that Morata and Perisic have an harder matchup and Ozil doesn't offer as much threat as Muller in the same match. So, if you want to be logical, Muller. Anything else is a punt.

So Lewandowski was the "must have" prior to the tournament starting. He was the highest scorer in qualifiers. Now he is up against a team that has nothing to play for. Poland can still win their group and line up a possible tie with best 3rd place in Grp A/B/F.

Yet people are sticking with 5-6 point captains.

Points are harder to come by in this game with no BPS. 5/6 pts is as good as most strikers have been getting so far these Euros. Especially if leading, 12pt captain is solid.

Yes it is, but no point in rolling the dice with players in the wings like Lewa/Milik/Cr7/Kdb?Lolkaku & co.

Plenty of point. Like I said 12pts is actually a good score in the context of this tournament, especially if you're leading.

If you owned any of those you'd be happy if they scored. That means 6pts which is what you have already anyway.

I am punting and twisting from 5pts [c 10] because I think it's more fun that way but I see plenty of reason why others wouldn't!

        In Auckland, NZ.

He was one of the first names in my team. 🙂

But I will captain Schürrle today if he starts, slightly more upside perhaps.

    What should I do?

    A) Müller(c)
    B) Özil(c)
    C) Keep my 12 points from Smalling(c)

Not too keen on captaining Nolito or Pique as they're not differentials in my league.

Think Bale (C) is a correct twist with Milik and Ronaldo to come. If Milik gets 6 or less i'm inclined to twist again.

    Have Dier captain.

Other options are Muller today or Lukaku tomorrow.

Stick or twist? Leading my ML but still feel with two chances left I should twist?

Thoroughly disappointed with my MD3 display so far. Best player scored 3 points. Considered Bale and Ramsey before settling on my WC team. One of my worst ever performances as a fantasy player this round.

Captaining a defender seems the most risk-free option in this tournament. Germany are 90% certain to keep a clean sheet but it's not as certain Ozil will make an assist or Muller will score. 6 points is a very good score due to lack of BPS.

It is certainly risk free but there's always the potential for more points. I captained Payet 2 weeks in a row and got a nice 10 pointer followed by 8. Though I am tempted to go down the 6 point route with Hector.

Defiantly good to have a day 4 clean sheet banker just incase... Unless you have Ronalol of course

Captaincy is between Milik and Hector for me, now just thinking of playing it safe and going with the easy CS from Hector (also a possible assist) for a nice 12-18 point return. I have KDB on the last day if that matters. Thoughts?
