Moving Target

Moving Target – Matt Phillips

Earlier this month, West Brom made QPR winger Matt Phillips their first summer signing, with the Scotland international joining the Baggies for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £6 million. Phillips has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns.

Speaking to the club’s official website about what supporters can expect from him, Phillips is looking to make an immediate impact in the final third:

“My game is about pace and power and strength, looking to take people on, getting shots off and getting crosses in. Assists and goals – that’s what I will be counting on. I want to get my place in the starting XI and build from there. But I’m not the finished article by any means. I’m 25 and I still feel I can bring more to my game.”

The History

Born in Aylesbury, Phillips joined Wycombe Wanderers as an eight-year-old, and progressed all the way through to the first-team, making his professional debut at the age of 17 as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Notts County in April 2008.

In total, Phillips made 84 appearances for the Chairboys, scoring eight goals and registering six assists, before moving to then Premier League outfit Blackpool in August 2010 in a deal rising to £700,000.

He was quick to settle for the Seasiders, scoring on his Premier League debut as a late substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers. The Scotland international went on to make 27 appearances in the top flight in 2010/11, scoring twice and providing three assists.

Blackpool only lasted one year at the top table of English football, though, and while Phillips was linked with moves to other Premier League sides, he spent two more seasons with the club and, aside from a short loan spell at Sheffield United in 2011, produced 28 goals and 12 assists over 87 matches in all competitions.

Phillips finally moved on in the summer of 2013, joining QPR for a reported fee of £5 million. He played 22 matches for the Hoops in 2013/14, bagging three goals and two assists as they gained promotion back to the top flight. The following season was more impressive for Phillips given the step up in class, scoring three goals and laying on eight assists in 25 Premier League matches. QPR again suffered relegation back to the Championship, though, with Phillips showing flashes of his abilities last term, producing eight goals and five assists in 44 league appearances.

Despite representing England at Under 19 and Under 20 levels, Phillips chose to represent Scotland at international level due to his eligibility through his grandparents. He made his debut in a 5-1 defeat to USA in May 2012, but has only made three further appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that the Baggies scored just 34 times last term – a tally better only than relegated Aston Villa (27) – the need for more firepower in the final third is apparent. Indeed, with the Baggies ranked bottom for shots on target and second-bottom for total attempts, Tony Pulis will be hoping the addition of Phillips should help improve Albion’s cutting edge.

The 25-year-old has been utilised on the right wing in both pre-season friendlies so far, although recent comments from the club’s technical director Nick Hammond indicate he could also be utilised up top are worth keeping an eye on, particularly if Saido Berahino is sold before the end of the transfer window.

Phillips should bring a much-needed pace to West Brom’s attack and is likely to be competing against the likes of James Morrison, Jonathan Leko, Craig Gardner and Callum McManaman for a starting berth, with Pulis generally favouring a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 formation last season. James McClean looks the obvious candidate to start on the left wing, although most of Albion’s wide men have the ability to play on either flank.

During the 2014/15 season Phillips spent with QPR in the Premier League, he averaged a shot every 45.8 minutes, which was only bettered by McManaman (40.1) among Baggies midfielders last term. In terms of creativity, Phillips averaged a key pass every 53.6 minutes, which was again second only to McManaman (34.5) last term, though it’s worth noting the latter only made 12 appearances last season, slightly skewing his statistics.

Phillips has been priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this time around, potentially offering us a viable option from the West Brom midfield that was absent for so much of last season.

Looking at Albion’s opening fixtures (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM), there may certainly be a temptation among FPL bosses to consider a Baggies attacker in their initial drafts, with no matches against last season’s top five and three home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks.

Nonetheless, history suggests that owning an attacker from a Pulis side has never proved to be a particularly successful strategy for Fantasy managers, and given the number of options available in the same price bracket in midfield, it’ll take some eye-catching performances from Phillips during pre-season to force a change in outlook.

So... Who's the best attacker to get from Chelsea? 🙂

Costa - expensive, card magnet, few baps.
Bats - new signing, "unproven", expensive enough.
Hazard - very expensive, quality, might play deeper under Conte.
Willian - Could essentially be a wingback.
Cesc - how much licence to roam will he be given? playing double pivot?
    Anyone else?

Traore as a midfielder at 5.5 would be amazing.

Fabregas is great value if deployed as a #10.

Hazard looked amazing at the end of last season and in the euros.

Conte doesn't normally use a number 10 though, so Cesc could play deeper 😐

Hazard is really tempting, he has form, but again, worried about his position for 10m.. You can get Mkhitaryan for 0.5 less and he's guaranteed to be in the attacking 3 behind the striker.

100% agree, hence the if 🙂

I am backing Hazard myself, with Mkhi alongside him. That 10m is fairly easy to find replacements with if Sanchez or KDB get going.

Costa by a big margin for me.

He was priced at 10.5m in his first season at Chelsea. Its mind boggling to see him priced 9.5m when the likes of Vardy and Bats are priced at 10m and 9m respectively.

    Initial thoughts:

Gk- de gea is hard to look past under Jose but coutouis with conte is another great shout
Def- I'm looking to have one United chelsea, West brom, Middlesbrough all in my team as they all prioatise defence with potentially Southampton as from what I've heard puel is a defensive manager. Also potentially looking at byram as he is 4.5 and as he's a great player who could potentially start
Mid- feel Hazard, Townsend due to good ends to the last season, with Coutinhio as Liverpool will score goals then I'm looking at Jay Rodriguez as a bit of a punt as puel will play a 4312 so I'm hoping he gets the nod ahead of Austin as puel likes the more mobile attackers then I'm totally undecided on the final mid but I'm looking to go for another punt as there are many good options(gray, Fer Phillips etc)
Strike- Zlatan had his most prolific season last, and has proved himself in almost every league, hopefully aswell I can fit aguero but if not I'll go for Nolito as a Midfield replacement, then gray as my third striker with potentially benteke at palace

Wouldn't recommend choosing player because they ended last season well. That's last season - often doesn't carry over (although it obviously can)

GK - Yes Biased, but Cech is also the cheapest route into the Arsenal defence. Food for thought.

Strike - Yes Zlatan had a great season, he is one year older though, arguably debuting in a much more demanding league in terms of physicality and toughness (he won't face mediocre French defences every week), and didn't look the part in the Euros. Still an excellent player. I think Aguero is the better bet though, especially as it gives you the flexibility to swap for Ibra when needed. Cover Utd with Mkh/Mart unless you're going for both strikers.

I'm going for both but also with aguero is he 100% to start the season playing 90 mins, and Zlatan has done it against English defences plenty of times and I dont fell he worries about the physicality aspect of the game

He certainly doesn't (man is a martial arts athlete and broke fitness records during his medical). However, it's not hard to argue that doing it week in week out vs English defences is different than 4-5 times a year. He's a wait and see for me, but to each their own.

Very different from the norm, going without Aguero is always ballsy but you've got KDB to soften the blow a little.

Like it, although it could start to feel a lack of some of the most popular big hitters like Aguero, Mahrez, Hazard, Zlatan.

Please rate m first real draft.

    De Gea (Jakupovic)

    Shaw Williams McCauley Kolarov Paredes
    Haz Mahrez Ayew KDB Hölberg
    Aguero Long Grabban

KDB to Nolito/Silva would free up 1.5 to upgrade Grabban, Paredes or Hölberg

What do people think of Kante as a 5th mid? Locked in, scored 1+4 last season with 9 BAPS and will probably hit 15 clean sheets? Could end up with a few more assists or pick up a few crumbs off Hazard's dribbles.

Don't like the ddg shaw double up. Will kola get consistent starts? Nice midfield, though I would downgrade one of kdb/ mahrez/ haz to upgrade the strikers

I can't not risk pick Kolarov, just love him ha ha plus his upside is big - I can switch to Sagna if needed, just thought he may get some rest at start of season after playing every game at EUROS.

De Gea is a must imo, and i'm guessing United will be tight as with Jose at the helm. Shaw could be swapped for a Terry or Coleman if I see consistency of starts/form in the others.

Probably right with MID > FOR.

First stab at a team, some interesting dynamics... feels like 3rd striker has to be at the 6.5 mark.

    Butland - Heaton
    Shaw - Wimmer - Funes-Mori - 4.0 - 4.0
    Hazard - Eriksen - Firminio - Bojan - Gundogan
    Aguero - Giroud - Long

What is causing me headaches atm is the new set ups at Man Utd, Chelsea and City... How will they play? Will the new player settle quickly? Will existing players be compromised by style?

I like rotating keepers, however I would need to have two 4.5s in my team, otherwise I feel I'm spending too much. This would allow you to upgrade a 4.0 defender to a 4.5

I would be careful with Giroud, as he may miss the first match or two due to the Euros.

Bojan is interesting and tempts me too, but I think I need to wait and see how he does for the first few matches.

Both GK's are good and should get many saves.

Wimmer may not play so maybe replace him with someone.

Be careful with Firminio as this Wijnaldium signing means there could be rotation anywhere in the LFC mids.

Hazard is an expensive risk but it could be a very good move if he finds form due to his (probable) low ownership.

Strikers are good but Long's fixtures aren't.

I've been through many permutations and I've got this for now:

    Heaton - Foster
    Shaw - Souare - Fernandez - Walker - Gabriel
    Hazard - Shaqiri - Townsend - Sigurdsson - Fletcher
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Long

The main issues I'm thinking about at the moment:
    - Am I a bit thin in midfield?
    - Shaqiri (6.5) vs Bojan (6.0)??
    - Siggy vs Ayew (both 7.5)

Of course any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Midfield needs extra strength so I'd say downgrade Ibra and improve on Townsend and Fletcher.

      Bojan

        Reply fail

Bojan over Shaqiri because Bojan may play up front.

Ayew over Siggy due to more points potential.

    Adrian Heaton

    Walker Fry Dawson Shaw Mertesacker

    Mkhitaryan Antonio Ayew Willian Gradel

    Giroud Aguero Gray

    1. Will Fry/Shaw/Mertesacker be nailed on?

    2. Should I transfer out Antonio and/or Willian?

    3. Will Giroud play in GW 1 and 2?

    4. Is Gray or Long the best 6.5 option?
